10-2: The Rockets get by Tulsa on the road and San Diego State at home the way to a 3-1 start – assume a loss at Michigan State – before diving into the MAC slate. They get by Western Michigan at home, and have few problems with the run of three road games in four weeks, and take out Northern Illinois on the road to take the West title.

6-6: They drop the date against San Diego State, but worse than that, the West goest bye-bye with losses at Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. A stumble somewhere along the way – like against Ohio or Central Michigan – means another 6-6 season and another year without a bowl game.

Central Michigan needed a minor miracle, and they got one when a blast of winter weather hit DeKalb, Illinois, helping out Northern Illinois stun the MAC’s best offensive team in a 17-14 win over Western Michigan.
That WMU loss means that CMU takes the MAC West and will go on to face Miami University for the conference title with a win over Toledo.
The Rockets have lost two straight and desperately need another win to be almost assured of a bowl appearance. They’re eligible, but with so many teams with six or more wins, seven should assure a post-season exhibition game.
They live thanks to the MAC’s best running game with 200 yards or more six times in eight games before being held in check by Buffalo.
The Central Michigan run defense is solid.
Overall, the D is great at coming up with takeaways. It’ll force three takeaways, the defensive front will come up with enough big plays to get stall the Rocket O on several third downs, and it’ll survive a late rally at home to pull off the win and get into the MAC Championship.

Both teams need this, but in different ways.
Toledo has a whole lot of traffic in its way and needs a whole lot of help to win the MAC West, but there’s no shot if it doesn’t get by Buffalo and Central Michigan to close things out.
At least it’s bowl eligible already. Buffalo isn’t.
The Bulls managed to pull off a gag that rivals last year’s colossal disaster in the MAC Championship loss to Northern Illinois. They were cruising along against Kent State, collapsed in the few minutes, and lost 30-27.
Now the MAC East title hopes are done – Miami took the division – and they have to win at least one of their last two games to go bowling. They play Bowling Green next week, but they need to close this off, now.
Considering Toledo failed to show up in last week’s puzzling loss to Northern Illinois, which team will bounce back the fastest?
Buffalo has a pass rush, and Toledo doesn’t.
The UB offense will rip through a Rocket defense that’s giving up 465 yards per game thanks to a secondary that’s getting hammered by anyone who’s trying to throw.
Toledo has to run to win – it leads the MAC in rushing – but it’s going against the league’s best defensive front.
UB will play for a full four quarters this week.

The MAC West is already muddled, and it was made more so with Western Michigan’s thrilling win over Ohio on Tuesday night.
Northern Illinois is out of the MAC title chase with a loss, and it’s ensured of a losing season if it drops this. Win, and it has to get by Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan to hope for a swag bag trip.
Toledo has had a rocky year, but it beat Western Michigan and still has Central Michigan to deal with. It’s the Rockets’ last home game of the season, and it’s going to be a balmy 25 degrees at game time.
Toledo’s running game has to own this game from the start.
The league’s best ground attack already has a 1,052-yard, ten-touchdown year out of Bryant Koback, helping to lead the way for an O that’s rushed for over 500 yards in the last two weeks. He’s banged up, but there are plenty of other options – Toledo is 6-0 when running for 190 yards or more, and 0-3 when rushing for fewer.
The Northern Illinois run defense isn’t all that bad, but the team is 0-4 when it gives up 190 yards or more.
It’s about to give up 190 yards or more.
The Huskie defensive front doesn’t get behind the line and doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush to be disruptive. NIU can move the ball, but it’s not consistent enough to come through late to pull this off on the road.
