Miami vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Can Texas A&M score?

It was one of the glossed over aspects to the early high ranking for an Aggie team that everyone expects to be fantastic – does it have the skill guys?

Haynes King is a promising young quarterback, but it’s probably going to be Max Johnson getting the start – it’s not a plus to have a shakeup like this now. There’s talent on offense, and Devon Achane will be in someone’s NFL backfield soon enough, but is the firepower there? More to the point, can A&M’s deliberate style show off whether or not the playmakers really are there?

They sure as shoot weren’t in the 17-14 loss to Appalachian State with just eight first downs from the offense and 180 yards in all.

Miami’s defense isn’t quite there yet, but it showed off the offensive talent in layups against Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss with 100 points and well over 1,000 yards in the two games.

The O will slow down against the terrific Aggie defense, but if QB Tyler Van Dyke and the passing game can get up early, can A&M crank up any sort of a comeback?

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Texas A&M Will Win

It’s not that bad quite yet, everyone.

Appalachian State has guys. It doesn’t have a slew of NFL stars, but that’s a veteran team with good lines, great running backs, and the experience across the board to have handled a situation like last Saturday.

No, the A&M offense didn’t come tough, but the other side was more than fine. Remember, that’s an App State team that rolled up and down the field in the wild game against North Carolina, and it managed just 315 yards and was more opportunistic than sensational.

For all of the team’s problems, the offensive line has been good in pass protection so far, the secondary hasn’t allowed much of anything, and there’s too much talent overall to be this mediocre.

Miami has looked strong so far, but even with the easy win over Southern Miss, it hasn’t faced anyone like the Aggies just dealt with.

It’s going to come down to …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Mistakes. Texas A&M’s four turnovers so far are too many, and Miami has first three takeaways in each of the first two games.

A&M can’t press, and it can’t try to erase the problems of the weird loss right away. It’s going to have to stay patient, it can’t let Van Dyke get into a groove, and it will have to rely on a run defense that won’t allow much of anything.

Don’t lose the turnover battle, own field position, and pound, pound, pound. The O line might be okay so far at keeping Johnson from getting popped – assuming he really is starting – but the running game has yet to do anything interesting.

That has to change here – it will do just enough to get out with a tough win. The defense will hang on for dear life on the final drive to survive.

Texas A&M vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Did Appalachian State just score again?

The Mountaineers gave North Carolina a fun time scoring 40 points in the fourth quarter … and losing. It was one of the wildest games in a long, long time in the 63-61 loss, but the offense cranked up 659 yards, everything clicked – especially late – and it wasn’t that crazy for an attack with these running backs.

They have the depth in the backfield, Chase Brice – who threw for 361 yards and six scores – is a veteran passer, and Texas A&M’s defense is about to get tested hard.

The passes will be spread around, the ground attack will work inside and out behind a dangerous line, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The A&M lines are a wee bit different than what Appalachian State saw against North Carolina.

The Aggies came up with an efficient 31-0 win over Sam Houston to start the campaign, starting with a defense that held the high-octane attack to fewer than 200 yards and coming up big on third down after third down.

The defensive front was great at getting into the backfield and stuffing everything before it could get going. The Aggies have the tacklers that North Carolina doesn’t, and they’re going to make Brice try to win this.

Appalachian State needs to run well to set up everything, or else …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M will never give up the ball.

Appalachian State isn’t going to hit the explosive plays it came up with against North Carolina as it tries grinding it out a bit more than it might like. It’s able to control the clock at times, but it’s going to press a bit with A&M having the offensive on the field for long stretches of time.

The deliberate style of A&M will take over the game in the third quarter as QB Haynes King has a sharp performance on third downs and the defense takes care of the rest.

Texas A&M vs Sam Houston Game Preview

Why Sam Houston Will Win

This is a high-powered Sam Houston team that went 11-1 last year with a great offense that averaged 41 points per game, one of the FCS’s best defense – especially against the run – and with enough good players returning to fit the systems.

Texas A&M has the talent, but can it all come together right away? It needs to hold up against the great Bearkat receivers – Ife Adeyi and Cody Chrest are dangerous –  and a passing attack that’s going to keep on pressing.

The Sam Houston offense can beat Texas A&M at its own game and control the tempo and the clock, it can also be explosive, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The Texas A&M secondary might be one of the early strengths, at least when it comes to experience combined with an infusion of talent.

The Aggie defense doesn’t have a slew of national-known stars yet – that’s coming with this latest recruiting class – but it should be able to generate enough third down stops to keep the Sam Houston State offense from getting into a groove.

Yes, there are enough Bearkats back to make a push, but they have to replace QB Eric Schmid and RB Ramon Jefferson – two of the key stars from last year.

This isn’t the defense you want to go against when you’re breaking in new skill parts.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies can’t get just off the bus and think it can run a light scrimmage against this Sam Houston team.

It’ll be a wee bit of a fight for a while. The Bearkats will get the offense going well enough – and the defensive front will hold up fine against the Aggie running game – to keep this interesting.

However, new starting QB Haynes King and the A&M passing game will keep the chains moving in the second half as the team finally starts to pull away.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.

Nick Saban might be the greatest college football coach of all-time – or close to it – but do his teams cover the spread?

How do all the SEC head coaches do against the spread, and on the road ATS, and going over on the point total?

If you like to invest, here’s everything you need to know about all 14 current SEC head coaches and how they do against the lines.

One important note, all of these stats only reflect how all the coaches have done on their current SEC teams. Two exceptions for the new guys – Billy Napier’s time at Louisiana and Brian Kelly’s era at Notre Dame are counted.

Texas A&M Aggies Preview 2022

You want the most crazy-patient-frustrated fans in college football? Try Texas A&M’s base.

They’ve been taunted by big, shiny, awesome-looking presents under the tree for decades, and they haven’t been allowed to unwrap them.

Everyone likes to throw out Texas as the program that has done the least with the most over the last several years, but it has a national championship and another title game appearance in the BCS/CFP era. It’s more like Texas has had everything at its disposal – including being in the Big 12, not the SEC -and yet somehow screwed it all up.

Texas A&M is actually the program that has accomplished the least with the most, and it’s not because it did anything wrong.

On the contrary, with the possible argument that moving to the SEC from the Big 12 might have kept it from a CFP appearance or two, it has done absolutely everything right.

It got the national championship-caliber head coach and provided him with the resources, financial stability, and the ten-year plan to play the long game so A&M could build everything up for long-term success.

And Jimbo Fisher has been fine. It’s hard to argue too much with a 34-14 record with three big bowl wins in four seasons, but he only has one year so far with fewer than four losses. That’s hardly anything new, though.

With last year’s 8-4 campaign, A&M has endured 23 out of the last 26 seasons with four or more losses. You lose four games at LSU or Georgia or Florida or Auburn, and Hugh Freeze pops up in some sort of a coaching search article.

A&M is getting the players. Fisher and company just came up with one of the greatest recruiting classes in the history of the sport – at least by the projections – but Georgia, Alabama, and LSU always bring in the big-time talents, too, and those three own the last three national championships.

To make things worse, six SEC programs have a national championship in the BCS/CFP era – so does Texas, so does Oklahoma – and Texas A&M is still hanging around with Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Kentucky in the No SEC Championship Appearance lounge sipping on rail drinks and enduring the DJ whose idea of a banger is Adele.

The coach is there, the talent is there, the money is there, the smarts to navigate the new era of college football is there, the will is there, the commitment is there, the fan base is more than there, the win over Alabama was there, and living rent free in Nick Saban’s head this offseason is there.

It’s ALL there.

All of the things the program has done to get this point is to position itself as the SEC’s next top dog once Alabama finally takes a step back. But for now, just getting to an SEC Championship and being a part of the College Football Playoff chase would do.

That might not happen in 2022 – all that young talent coming in might take a year or so to kick in – but there’s hope. There are reasonable expectations for national championship greatness coming around the corner.

It’s going to happen. There will be a payoff.

(Don’t mention the word payoff with Texas A&M around Saban, though.)

SEC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

SEC preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

The SEC doesn’t have Texas and Oklahoma quite yet, but as is, it’s still the nastiest football conference in college football with the SEC West an almost unfairly fantastic division.

Can Georgia replace enough parts and get back into the championship mix? With a schedule that misses Alabama and Texas A&M, maybe.

Can Alabama sidestep all of the landmines on a schedule that would be a total nightmare for just about anyone else?

How about all the 50/50 games with an improved Mississippi State, a stronger Tennessee, and resurgent Florida and LSU teams all likely to bring even more. South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Auburn should all be dangerous enough to beat just about anyone on any given day, and …

Welcome to life in the SEC. There will be twist, turns, and a few crazy upsets.

After a wee bit of a down year overall – forgetting who played in the College Football Playoff National Championship – this level of play should be much higher across the board, making the 2022 SEC predictions for every game that much harder.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

QB CJ Stroud, Soph. Ohio State

Try not to compare the 2022 Stroud to the 2021 version that put up astronomical numbers and would’ve won the Heisman in a walk if Ohio State got past Michigan and if Auburn’s Tank Bigsby had stayed in bounds late against Alabama.

Stroud rolled up over 4,400 yards with 44 touchdowns and six picks last year, hitting 72% of his passes along the way. He’s probably not going to do that again for one simple reason – he won’t have to. He had to keep bombing away at times with the Buckeye defense struggling to be its normal self.

As long as he keeps the completion percentage to around 70%, keeps the interceptions at a bare minimum, and hits his third down throws, he’ll be fine.

Of course, he’ll be better than fine, though.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jack Campbell, Sr. Iowa

The Iowa linebackers know how to tackle and tackle and tackle some more. Campbell and running mate Seth Benson should combine for over 250 tackles if everything goes right in what should be another big year for the Hawkeye D.

Campbell won’t be as disruptive as Wisconsin’s Nate Herbig, and he might not bring the value like several of the top linemen, but he’ll eat up everything again after leading the nation with 143 tackles with a fumble return for a score, two interceptions – taking one for a touchdown – and with 3.5 tackles for loss.
