Why South Carolina State Will Win

South Carolina State is among the best coached teams the Gamecocks will face. Oliver Pough is a legend with the program, his teams don’t make a slew of big mistakes, and this year’s version isn’t going to give away the ball enough to matter.

The offense has been stalling a bit too much, but the pass rush is fine, the defense keeps the pressure on, and there’s a good group of decent backs to work around starting with Kendrell Flowers.

South Carolina is struggling on both sides of the ball on third downs, the run defense hasn’t bean great, and the offensive line has to be better. However …

The South Carolina State passing game doesn’t work.

This isn’t the normal Bulldog offense. Flowers and the running game are fine, but there are way too many plays allowed in the backfield – SCSU nets just 2.9 yards per carry – and QB Corey Fields is having problems keeping things moving.

As long as the South Carolina running game can establish itself early on like it did against Charlotte last week in the 56-20 win, all should be fine.

The bad weather won’t hit quite yet – the game was moved from Saturday to Thursday. However, it’s going to be really, really windy.

Why Charlotte Will Win

Well there we go, was that so hard?

Charlotte was awful over the first three weeks of the season – getting blown out by Florida Atlantic, William & Mary, and Maryland – and just when all hope was lost, the team pitched a strong game in a stunning 42-41 road win over Georgia State.

It took over 500 yards of total offense and a massive day from QB Chris Reynolds – 401 yards and five scores – to get there, but now the O is going again. Reynolds had been out for a few weeks, the attack couldn’t keep up the pace, but now the 49ers have a passing game.

South Carolina can’t convert on third downs, can’t stop them, can’t stop the run, can’t stop turning the ball over, can’t stop anyone’s offense with the worst currently among all SEC teams, and …

Why South Carolina Will Win

Yeah, playing Georgia and Arkansas will skew up the stats a bit.

The Gamecocks played Georgia State, too, and won 35-14.

The defense might be having a hard time against the run – allowing 200 yards or more in each of the first three games – but now it’s time for the offense to eat.

Again, it’s not like Charlotte played a slew of killers, and yet it’s dead last in college football in total defense.

This is the game to get everything going. Spencer Rattler should be able to relax and spread the ball around a bit, the running game will do what it wants, and after a few tough losses, a 600-yard day of total O would be nice.

What’s Going To Happen

Can South Carolina gear it up after the two rough SEC losses. There’s work to do this week and to tune up more with South Carolina State to follow, and then comes Kentucky and Texas A&M.

Rattler is very, very talented. Now the interceptions have to stop, he needs to be more consistent, and the team needs to blow up against someone, just because.

That’s happening against the 49ers.

Seriously, what quarterback is playing better right now than Stetson Bennett?

USC’s Caleb Williams, but that’s about it.

Bennett was fantastic against Oregon, he kept it all going in the scrimmage against Samford, and the offense hasn’t had a blip so far.

South Carolina hasn’t been bad so far against the pass because it’s getting hammered on the ground. Georgia State was able to average five yards per carry, and Arkansas powered for close to 300 yards and five scores in last week’s 44-30 win.

Georgia hasn’t cranked up the ground game quite yet, but it might not need to. Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson hit 18-of-21 throws on the Gamecocks, and Bennett might do the same.

South Carolina is going to fire away.

Spencer Rattler has hardly been perfect with three interceptions to go along with his two touchdown passes, but he’s got the arm, the talent, and the upside to get hot for a stretch and push the Georgia secondary deep.

To get very, very nitpicky, as great as Georgia has been over the first two games, there’s only been one sack and not a whole lot happening behind the line. It hasn’t had to turn everyone loose, but Rattler might be deadly if he gets time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

There might not be anything splashy or sensational coming from Georgia, but it’ll get the job done with a balanced attack and a few good scoring drives to overcome a few big energy moments from the home team.

There will be stretches when Rattler is fantastic, the USC D holds up, and it seems like there might be something big happening. And then Georgia will methodically end that narrative.

South Carolina is having a huge problem on third downs on both sides of the ball. That, and not being able to win the turnover margin, will keep it from having a real shot at pulling this off.

Don’t blow off the 35-14 win over Georgia State – that’s a good Sun Belt team with enough dangerous playmakers to have made that far tougher.

Okay, so Spencer Rattler wasn’t sensational – he didn’t push the ball down the field enough and there were too many misses – but he was okay, the offense perked up a big after a sluggish start, and the defense took care of the rest.

And yeah, okay, so the special teams were everything with blocked kicks for scores, but the pass defense got the job done and the team got the opener out of the way.

The lines are fine. There’s no need to panic, the team overall is far better than it looked and played against the Panthers, and …

Why Arkansas Will Win

Really, is South Carolina better than it looked and played against the Panthers?

The offensive line couldn’t do much to keep Georgia State out of the backfield, the running game sputtered, and the defensive line was hit for a few big dashes. Meanwhile, Arkansas got punched and it survived.

Cincinnati isn’t as good as it was last year, but it came back solid, made a push in the second half, and the Hogs still won 31-24.

The lines were great when they had to be, KJ Jefferson was KJ Jefferson and should be this week, too – he was sharp through the air and ran for 62 yards and a score – and it’ll be all about whether or not Rattler can get the Gamecock O going.

If South Carolina plays like it did last week, it will be in for a long day. But …

Cincinnati QB Ben Bryant hit the Arkansas secondary hard, and Rattler will come up with a decent performance, too.

You see that?

It’s one of the hardest things in sports to spot, but it you look off in the distance, way out there, you might be able to catch a quick glimpse.

It’s an SEC football fan base that actually appears to be sort of … happy? Without winning a national championship?

After going a combined 6-16 in two years before the breakthrough 2021, you can understand why the Gamecock base is excited. That’s what happens when you get a good season that no one saw coming.

These things are gone in a snap, and certainly South Carolina football fans are going to want a whole lot more out of head coach Shane Beamer – losing 30-0 to Clemson is never going to sit well – but there’s real, reasonable anticipation now for a program and team that should be dangerous.

There’s a theory that there’s no better time to be a sports fan of a team than when it’s just on the verge of being really good.

South Carolina is still building, and it’s not going to be easy with a nasty schedule that would bury most teams, but there’s a ton of experience, it has a good young head coach, and with the addition of Spencer Rattler, an argument could be made that no one outside of the Denver Broncos did more to upgrade a quarterback situation.

Is South Carolina going to beat Georgia? Almost certainly not, and it probably won’t beat Texas A&M or Clemson, either, but at least the team is good enough that an upset in any of those three games wouldn’t be insanely crazy – that’s a far cry from where the program was at last year at this time.

And that’s the next step. In 2021 it was the blowout win over Florida that came out of nowhere – along with the rocking of North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl – and this year there needs to be another surprise or two considering how good this starting 22 should be.

SEC fan happy time goes away when the expectations start to become outsized, and that’s coming for South Carolina soon enough.

But for right now, the fan base has a team to get jacked about for the next several months.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.
