Turns out, this Ohio State team might be better than we gave it credit for. After watching the Nittany Lions dismantle pretty much everyone they played, including a curb-stomp of Iowa, many thought this could be the year Penn State slays the Buckeyes at home.

It wasn’t meant to be and it had a lot to do with the OSU defense outshining a Nittany Lion defense many thought was the best unit in this game.

It was a close contest again, but the Buckeye defense dictated things more often than not and allowed the offense to do just enough behind the chemistry of Kyle McCord and Marvin Harrison Jr. in what ended up being a 20-12 victory for the good guys.

After every game, we like to share some of the best high-resolution pictures our USA TODAY SMG team snapped on site, and those colors going against each other on the banks of the Olentangy made for some pretty good eye candy.

Defense, Marvin Harrison Jr. lead Ohio State to 20-12 victory over Penn State

Ohio State came away with a massive 20-12 victory over Penn State in one of the biggest games of the season to date. Here’s a recap.

In one of the biggest games of the season to date Ohio State came away with a 20-12 win over Penn State for its seventh straight victory over the Nittany Lions, and move to 7-0 on the season.

The Ohio State defense has been one of the best in the country this season and it certainly lived up to that billing with a dominant performance on Saturday.

Penn State came into the matchup averaging 40.6 points per game and were shut down. The Nittany Lions didn’t find the end zone until late in the fourth quarter and went 1-of-16 on third downs for the game.

Offensively, the Buckeyes rode arguably college football’s best player with Marvin Harrison Jr. delivering time and time again in critical situations — finishing the game with 11 catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

 

Buckeye nation should be thrilled about this victory as with a seventh straight win over Penn State to the Buckeyes, add a second top 10 victory to their resume in the season so far.

Next week the undefeated Buckeyes will go on the road to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in a Saturday night game on NBC. The march continues.

Well that was a donnybrook if I’ve ever seen one.

Both defenses made life extremely difficult for the opposing offense, and it was a razor thin margin (despite the junk time score) that was the difference in Ohio State outlasting the Nittany Lions, 20-12, Saturday afternoon in the ‘Shoe.

At the end of the day, it’s another close loss to the Buckeyes by a James Franklin led team, and another massive win in this matchup from the Scarlet and Gray sideline. It was a pretty ugly game, but all you want in these types of games is to get out of it with a win, and that’s where we are … thankfully.

After every OSU game we try to take stock in what we saw and pull out some observations. Here are five things we think we learned after Ohio State’s big win against Penn State as the Buckeyes stay on the path to what they hope is a fantastic journey in 2023.

Welcome to halftime of the most important game of the year. We are very lucky that the Ohio State Buckeyes are beating the Penn State Nittany Lions to the tune of 10-6, because things could be much much worse.

Penn State is an elite team and I know fans are probably wanting this game to be a blowout, but that’s just not going to happen. Coming away with a win should be the one and only goal, no matter how ugly it may be.

We have noticed five specific things from the first half that are interesting to monitor. The game is so close, some of the items on this list are just due to pure luck or more deal with the Nittany Lions’ situation.

Ohio State is in the midst of a battle with Penn State and took a 10-3 lead in the first half on a Miyan Williams touchdown run. As many expected, it has been a defensive slugfest in the first half with two of the nation’s best defenses living up to that billing so far.

The Buckeyes offense has struggled to find a groove early but leaned on the run game, and a third down and 10 completion to Marvin Harrison Jr. to move the ball on this drive which ended in Miyan Williams punching it in on a two yard touchdown run.

Ok. Here we go.

A game everyone pointed to at the beginning of the year is finally here and the entire college football world will be tuned in. Ohio State hosts Penn State in a top-10 matchup Saturday inside Ohio Stadium, and there’s a great deal on the line.

Both teams are unbeaten. Both have a wealth of talent. Both have designs on a Big Ten title and a berth in the College Football Playoff.

But first things first, the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will have to win what looks like a war of attrition on Saturday, come out the other end and move on toward other matchups — notably against Michigan — in an effort to keep those goals on the table.
