Fox ‘Big Noon Kickoff’ crew picks winners of Ohio State vs. Michigan in ‘The Game’

Here’s who the Fox Big Noon Kickoff crew picked to win between Ohio State and Michigan. #GoBucks #The Game

It’s big game day Ohio State fans, and it’s one of the biggest in the history of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, not only because of where each team is in the standings and rankings, but because of all of the off-the-field stuff swirling around the Wolverines.

You know it’s a big one when both the ESPN “College GameDay” crew and Fox “Big Noon Kickoff” show is on site in Ann Arbor to take it all in.

Buckeye Nation has one of its own on the set of the Fox crew in former head coach Urban Meyer, and we always like to keep track of the picks he and his colleagues make in the biggest of games.

Here’s how all of the members of the Fox crew picked to win in the 118th edition of “The Game” on Saturday.

Urban Meyer and Fox Big Noon Kickoff crew picks winner of Ohio State vs. Penn State

Who did each member of the Fox Big Noon Kickoff crew pick to win between Ohio State and Penn State? #GoBucks

It’s game day for the Ohio State football team, but not just any game day. Ohio State is hosting a top ten Penn State squad that could be its biggest challenge of the season to date (no offense Notre Dame).

You know it’s a big one when the two major pregame shows originate from the banks of the Olentangy, and that’s exactly what we have Saturday with Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff and ESPN’s College GameDay in the shadow of Ohio Stadium

The ESPN crew already made their picks, and shortly thereafter, Urban Meyer and and the rest of the crew including Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, and Mark Ingram all made their predictions and had differing opinions.

Here’s what they all said.

No. 14 Sooners vs Cincinnati Bearcats: How to Watch, key players, weather forecast for gameday

The Sooners are going to be in for a battle this weekend, let’s take a look at how you can watch, the impact players, injury report and what’s the weather going to be like.

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to take on the [autotag]Cincinnati Bearcats[/autotag] on Saturday. This is the first conference game for both teams.

The Sooners are coming off a 3-0 nonconference slate whereas the Bearcats are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to in-state foe Miami (Oh.). But don’t let that game fool you. The Bearcats had seven trips to the red zone and only scored on four of them, two of which were field goals.

That’s how you beat yourself in a game you should win. This game is going to be a lot more interesting than people think. This is the best defensive line the Sooners have faced to date and could be the best they face all season.

But that doesn’t mean the offense isn’t any good. They rank No. 12 in the nation in total yards and No. 8 in the nation in rushing. The Sooners’ 15th-ranked rushing defense is going to be tested once again and the Bearcats have a very good dual-threat quarterback at the helm.

Not to mention this is going to be Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff game, the only time Oklahoma is making the trip as conference foes, and is expected to be a blackout for Cincinnati.

But without giving too much away, let’s dive into how you can watch the Sooners on the road.

Fox ‘Big Noon Kickoff’ slated for Oklahoma at Cincinnati in Week 4

When the Oklahoma Sooners travel to Cincinnati, they’ll face the Bearcats as part of Fox Big Noon Kickoff.

The Oklahoma Sooners are heading to Cincinnati to open Big 12 play against the Bearcats, who are in their first year in the Big 12.

When the Bearcats host the Sooners for their first Big 12 conference game, they’ll be on the national stage. Fox “Big Noon Kickoff” will make the trip to Cincinnati for the big-time matchup.

The Sooners are up big early in their matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, and Cincinnati will host Miami (Ohio) for an evening affair.

The last time the Oklahoma Sooners were on “Big Noon Kickoff” was their trip to Lincoln to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers last year.

The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Fox. The Sooners hold a 2-0 edge in the history of the matchup, picking up the wins in 2008 and 2010.

Caitlin Clark to square off against FOX ‘Big Noon Kickoff’ co-host Matt Leinart in 3-point contest

Fans are invited to see Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark take on Matt Leinart in a 3-point shooting contest Friday in downtown Iowa City.

Iowa City is the place to be this weekend, but no longer for the reason you’re thinking.

While, yes, the Hawkeyes’ afternoon clash with the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines is one of the most anticipated Big Ten matchups of the year, the real highlight comes on Friday.

Drawn in by the allure of the massive contest happening at Kinnick Stadium this weekend, FOX will be in town where Iowa City will play host to their “Big Noon Kickoff.”

Matt Leinart, former national champion and NFL quarterback, used his status on the show to issue a challenge to Iowa women’s basketball superstar Caitlin Clark for a 3-point competition. The All-American guard and recent Big Ten Player of the Year quickly accepted the invitation.

I’m in. See you tomorrow… 🙂 and see all you hawk fans there too!!!!” Clark tweeted.

Both Iowa basketball teams will host “Hawkeye Hoops from Downtown” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday afternoon on Iowa Ave. in downtown Iowa City.

Leinart might be best remembered for his accomplishments on the football field, winning a national championship with USC and bringing home the Heisman Trophy in 2004. He was the 10th overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, but was unfortunately caught behind a resurgent Kurt Warner.

Leinart does have a background in hoops as well, though. He lettered in basketball in high school at Mater Dei, and made headlines back in 2014 when he dropped 15 points and five assists in a Drew League game.

That said, he certainly isn’t Caitlin Clark. We’re talking about the Big Ten Player of the Year here. She averaged 27 points per game last year. She can shoot from anywhere in the gym!

It’s going to be a rough one on Friday for Matt Leinart.

Nebraska fans not happy with the Oklahoma game kickoff time

Husker fans were not afraid to take to social media to express their displeasure at the game time against Oklahoma!!

Nebraska Football learned the kickoff times for seven of its 12 regular-season games earlier in the week. One game-time Husker fans were interested to see was the September 17 match-up in Lincoln against the Oklahoma Sooners. Unfortunately, the match-up will occur at 11:00 am on FOX, and to say Nebraska fans were less than pleased would be an understatement. Many of the Husker faithful took to social media in the days following their announcement to announce their disappointment. The general sentiment expressed is that in a match-up between two rivals with the history of these two schools, the game should be in prime time. Look below, and we have a sample of some of the tweets showing Nebraska fans expressing their frustration.

Urban Meyer hints at a return to television

Would you support this and be excited about it?

To say that it’s been a rough year for former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer would be an understatement. There was the bar scandal, the train wreck that was his head coaching stint in Jacksonville, not to mention all the mud that was slung at him in the media before, during, and after his firing.

So, who could blame Meyer if he wanted to go away and never be in the limelight again?

But that may not be the case. In fact, according to some comments Meyer made on the “Tim May Podcast” earlier this week, he may be making a return to the television booth. He hinted at a return to a familiar role when asked if he’d ever consider working in a similar capacity as the one he had with Fox.

“That’s all still in conversation,” Meyer told May. “I love Fox, I love their team and their guys. There’s nothing that’s been finalized yet, but I plan on going back and doing it. I really enjoyed that. I enjoyed celebrating those who play, celebrating those who coach it. It’s a great game. Not being the kind of ripping people to shreds but just celebrating this incredible game and most importantly, the players that do this game. I plan on being back in the fall doing something like that.”

Well OK, then. If you know anything about the Fox Big Noon Kickoff show, Meyer was great. However, taking a head coaching position puts a damper on being available to continue that type of gig. With the void left when Meyer took the Jags job, the network filled it with former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops.

With Stoops now looking to get back into coaching with the XFL, there will again be an opening on the FOX pregame show. Will it be Meyer who might return to reprise his role? It looks like there’s at least a good possibility of that happening. We’ll just have to keep our ears open and eyes peeled to see if it actually comes to fruition.

‘Something we can get fixed’: Oklahoma seeking improved run game against Iowa State

Iowa State boasts the nation’s No. 18 rushing defense. Oklahoma remains confident it can get its rushing game on track versus the Cyclones.

Oklahoma has been held under 100 rushing yards in each of its past two games. Baylor kept redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks to just 55 rushing yards on 14 carries and the Sooners to 82 rushing yards as a team.

Against Texas Tech, Oklahoma rushed for only 72 yards. Part of that was true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams passing for over 400 yards and six touchdowns.

Still, it’s an alarming trend that Oklahoma needs fixed asap. On the season, Brooks only has a pair of 100-plus rushing yards games. He racked up 217 rushing yards with a pair of touchdowns against Texas on 25 carries and then followed that performance up the next week against TCU with 153 yards on 20 handoffs.

Since then, it’s been difficult for Oklahoma to find much in the way of running lanes.

Brooks remained upbeat earlier this week about the Sooners’ ability to establish the running game moving forward.

“Man, I’ve got more than just faith. They’ve done it before. They can do it again. I mean, we’re all not playing our best football, but that doesn’t mean that we’re going to just keep playing bad. We’re grinding. We’re going to keep working things out and we’re going to be good. I have faith in this whole team. I got faith in everybody. I’m still confident this team can do what we can and will do what we want to do at the end of the day. I’m very confident,” Brooks said.

Iowa State brings the nation’s No. 18 rushing defense to town on Saturday, so it doesn’t figure to get any easier at least on paper. Brooks and the Sooners know what type of battle they’re in for.

“They’re a strong defense. They’re a great team. They’ve always got great run fits. It’s going to be a battle up front, man. Whoever runs the ball this game is going to win the game. That’s what it always comes down to at the end of it every time I’ve played them. It’s going to be a very physical game, but we can do it. It’s something that we’ve done before and we can do it again,” Brooks said.

Oklahoma’s starting left guard Marquis Hayes understands that it starts with his group performing better.

“It’s definitely something we can get fixed. I feel like Baylor had a good scheme versus us, but it’s about us being more physical in the run. We’ve got to establish the run up front. Obviously, for the running backs to hit the gaps that they need to, we have to be more physical to open up the gap. Basically, we established this game to come in and be more physical and set the tone,” Hayes said.

Hayes and the rest of Oklahoma’s offensive line have reemphasized the need to win that battle of physicality up front this week versus the Cyclones. That starts with how they’ve approached practice.

“It manifests by saying…basically, practice. If you come in and attack practice with being physical. Coach B definitely said for us to be better as an offensive line we have to establish the run game and that’s being physical. It’s definitely a mentality. We attacked it this week. We’re establishing the run and being more physical and dominant, so it’s going to show Saturday,” Hayes said.

Oklahoma currently ranks No. 60 in rushing offense, averaging 171.8 rushing yards per game. The Cyclones have been especially stingy against the run, though Iowa State did surrender 207 rushing yards to Texas Tech last week.

Brooks and Oklahoma are remaining optimistic that the Sooners can find their physicality and establish the run game like they’re accustomed to in their final few games.

“Great teams have done it. Other teams that won championships, Super Bowls. There’s always something to work for. It’s not going to be perfect all the time. We’ve just got to keep working toward it,” Brooks said.

Oklahoma kicks off against Iowa State at 11 a.m. on FOX in the Sooners’ second consecutive Big Noon Kickoff.

Sooners LB Caleb Kelly to make an appearance on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff

With his OU playing career coming to a close, Sooners’ Linebacker Caleb Kelly looks to be making his broadcasting debut this week.

It was a disappointing way to end his time with the Oklahoma Sooners, but veteran linebacker Caleb Kelly isn’t letting it slow him down. The veteran linebacker has still been out at practice according to Head Coach Lincoln Riley and continues to make his presence felt as a leader of the squad.

Riley when speaking to the media on Tuesday said, “Yeah, it’s horrible man. But, honestly, it’s probably been made easier by his willingness to just accept it and just bounce right along. He’s been out at practice with a smile on his face. Been around the guys. Same energy.”

Riley added, “Hasn’t really changed him. I think for him, it’s just a recognition that it’s kind of time for the next chapter in his life. He’s not sitting there dwelling on it or poor me. Great example to a lot of people because a lot of people wouldn’t handle it that well. He’s been great and that’s why whatever he chooses to do next, he’s going to be pretty darn good at it.”

Could that next thing that Riley’s talking about be in the broadcast booth? Caleb Kelly’s about to get an opportunity.

After he made it known that his playing days in Norman were over, Kelly reached out to his first coach at the University of Oklahoma, Bob Stoops, about making an appearance on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff.  With Big Noon Kickoff set to take place in Norman, it looks like the fan favorite will be getting his wish as former head coach and Fox studio analyst Bob Stoops is making it happen for this Saturday.

It’s certainly not the way anyone would have written the story of Caleb Kelly’s career at Oklahoma. Especially the ending. But Kelly continues to prove time and time again what a difference maker he is. This time, it’s the attitude he’s taken from this latest injury. Kelly’s not letting it be a setback, instead using it to turn the page into the next chapter of his life.
