With a few new friends joining an already-enigmatic bunch, this is gearing up to be a very Mountain West-like season. Seven of the conference’s 12 teams will be showcasing a first-year head coach, one of which is returning to the Mountain West coach and two of which still have an interim tag attached. Of those two, one is the youngest coach in the FBS and the other took the job so recently that it was his predecessor at Mountain West Media Days. To add to the strangeness and excitement, the 12-team playoff has arrived, providing a clear and defined path to the College Football Playoff. This has given the Mountain West a real opportunity and the stakes have never been higher. If things fall into place just right, the Mountain West championship could mean a chance to play in the College Football Playoff.

The Mountain West is a tough league but until proven otherwise, it will appear to be a race to play, or replace, Boise State in the title match. The Broncos will have to ward off some formidable suitors. Fresno State, UNLV, and Wyoming will be gunning for a top spot. At the bottom, a trio of Nevada, New Mexico, and San Jose State will be looking to find their footing with the rest of the pack fitting somewhere in between.

Before we take a look at the conference, let’s take a look at the friends of the Mountain West. This year the Mountain West will have some visitors from the Pac-12. Oregon State and Washington State have both taken a beating on and off the field. Left behind as the only remaining members of their conference the two teams couldn’t even field a schedule. The two teams entered into a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West, so even though they won’t be eligible for the title game, they will be playing a Mountain West schedule.

Washington State

Jake Dickert’s Washington State didn’t get the kindest draw in the Mountain West slate and doesn’t have the easiest non-conference schedule either.

The Cougars open with Portland State, Texas Tech, Washington, San Jose State, and Boise State before their first bye. Portland and San Jose State represent winnable games, but the other three will be tough and they could pretty easily be 2-3 to open the season.

Coming out of the bye they will be met with a tough game against Fresno State, at which point the season could be at a pretty dangerous juncture. After what could easily be a 2-4 start, the Cougars would have to win at least four of their last six games against Hawaii, San Diego State, Utah State, New Mexico, Oregon State, and Wyoming. It’s possible, but the path to six wins is a rocky one for Washington State this year. Wazzu should end up between 3-9 and 8-4.

Oregon State

Oregon State is in slightly better shape and gets a slightly better draw. Like most of the Mountain West teams, the Beavers will be led by a first-year head coach in Trent Brady, who has been coaching defense within the program in some capacity since 2018. He was previously the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

The schedule for the Beavers is broken up into three four-game pods broken up by bye weeks. Their first set includes Idaho State, San Diego State, Oregon, and Purdue. Oregon State should take care of the Mountain West portion of that schedule but will have a harder time against the Big Ten portion.

After a bye, Oregon State will face Colorado State, Nevada, UNLV, and Cal. The Nevada schools stand out in this section of the schedule. The toughest team in this stretch is UNLV while the Wolf Pack will be in a rebuild.

The final stretch starts with a game against another rebuilding team in San Jose State. Then the Beavers play at Air Force and host Washington State. Then the Beavers close their season on the road against Boise State. The Broncos won’t go down easy, but if the Beavers can survive against Air Force, the Beavers should best the Cougars, and a winning season should be in play even if they drop their season finale. Oregon State could land anywhere from 3-9 (though that seems like it would be a long shot) and 9-3. A record closer to 7-5 seems more reasonable.

Air Force Falcons

Air Force is Air Force, and that’s just about all there is to it. Troy Calhoun, the longest-tenured coach in the Mountain West by a large margin, has amassed a record of 130-82. In his 18 years, his Falcons have only missed a bowl game five times. In the 13 bowl games they have gone to, they are 8-5. That’s probably indicative of what’s to come.

The Falcons have plenty of holes to fill with a slew of departures headlined by quarterback Zac Larrier, but in Colorado Springs, it’s just rinse and repeat. The Falcons are coming off three consecutive bowl games and have won ten, ten, and nine games in the past three seasons. So, even with the substantial losses to the roster, anyone who has been watching Air Force for the past decade knows better than to count them out.

The Falcons open conference play early and will host San Jose State in week two. Their week three matchup on the road against Baylor should be interesting. After that, they get a bye week and proceed with a pretty standard Air Force schedule with games against the rest of the Mountain West, Navy, and Army. They avoid Boise State, but travel to Laramie and host the Bulldogs. Air Force could go 4-8 on the low end or 9-3 on the high end.

Boise State Broncos

As much as the other 11 teams — and their fan bases — hate to admit it, Mountain West football runs through Boise. This year looks like it won’t be different.

Much could be said about the dramatics of last season and the unlikely rise of an untested coach in Spencer Danielson, but none of that would discredit what is happening at Boise State. In fact, much could be said of the entire program, but not much discourse is necessary to sum up what the Broncos have. That’s all because of one Ashton Jeanty.

Jeanty is, without question, one of the most impressive ball carriers in the nation. He’s the best running back in the conference and one of the most dangerous offensive players. In a lackluster program, he can single handedly make up for deficiencies around him, be it insufficient help on offense or poor coaching. In a competent program, he can elevate the team from good to great and from great to titanic. The Broncos could have done anything this offseason and it wouldn’t matter one bit. As long as Jeanty is in a Bronco uniform, Boise State will be a contender. Boise State should expect to go between 9-3 and 11-1.

Colorado State Rams

Colorado State is going into year three of the Jay Norvell experiment and it hasn’t gone as well as the Rams would have hoped when they poached the offensive tactician from Nevada. All the Rams have really managed to do so far is sabotage their conference foe on the way to mediocrity (Nevada has gone 2-20 while Colorado State has gone 8-16 since then). The Rams hope that will change this season.

The Rams haven’t seen a bowl game since 2017, when they capped off a five-year run of bowl appearances, but got just about as close as possible last year. They got within a game of bowl eligibility last season and came up just short of adding that last win multiple times, including a 43-35 overtime loss at Colorado, a 25-23 loss at UNLV, a 24-15 loss at Wyoming, and a 27-24 loss at Hawaii.

As is standard with Norvell’s teams, the story here will be the offense. Norvell likes to throw the ball around and he has a team that should be able to pass to his liking. Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi showed flashes of being a really high-level quarterback last year and Tory Horton is one of the best wide receivers in the conference. Horton was All-Mountain First team last season and Fowler-Nicolosi earned an honorable mention. Horton was also named to the Preseason All-Conference team this year.

Overall, the Rams should be able to take a step forward this year. If everything clicks, Norvell, Fowler-Nicolosi, and Horton could create a solid, if not dangerous, offense. The defense, led by linebacker Chase Wilson, should at least be able to keep up.

An adept defense and a Jay Norvell offense would certainly do the trick in Fort Collins, but only time will tell if the Rams will hit those marks. Colorado State should finish within 4-8 and 8-4.

Mountain West Football’s Updated 2024 Matchups Released

The Mountain West revised its college football schedule to include games against wayward Oregon State and Washington State.

What’s new?

The vagaries of college football realignment didn’t directly impact the Mountain West Conference over the last calendar year, but the shockwaves of moves across the country resulted today in a revised slate of matchups that includes the Oregon State Beavers and Washington State Cougars, the two Pac-12 programs left behind by their conference mates’ exodus.

When it was announced that the conference would do away with the Mountain and West divisions in 2022, the conference announced a rotation that would protect two games for each team and extend through the 2025 season. A multitude of Power 5 programs had other plans, however, and when the Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC raided the Pac-12 for ten of its teams throughout 2023, it left Oregon State and Washington State standing alone.

Here are the home and away games that the Mountain West had previously unveiled for 2024:

Air Force, Nevada, and San Diego State will host the Beavers while Boise State, Fresno State, and New Mexico will do the same for the Cougars. Conversely, Colorado State, San Jose State, and UNLV will travel to Corvallis; Hawaii, Utah State, and Wyoming will head to Pullman. None of the games will count as part of the conference standings, however, meaning that each Mountain West team will have seven conference games rather than the usual eight.

The changes, as you might expect, have differing impacts on every Mountain West team’s pre-existing schedule. Air Force, for instance, will get to face Oregon State at home instead of Hawaii, but Colorado State now travels to Oregon State and Nevada rather than Boise and San Diego. As DNVR Sports’s Justin Michael noted, it will be the first time since 2010 that the Rams and Broncos do not face each other. Similarly, Wyoming will now host San Diego State and Utah State rather than Nevada and UNLV.

One interesting twist is that the two teams who played in the Mountain West championship game this month, Boise State and UNLV, are now set to square off at Allegiant Stadium rather than Albertsons Stadium next year. Exact dates for the Mountain West schedule will be released at a later time, but next year’s title game is slated for Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Oregon State vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State can do this. It just has to keep Arizona from being okay from the field.

Duh, the more a team struggles at shooting the better the chance the other side has at winning, but Oregon State really, really needs Arizona to be off. It really, really needs to force mistakes and crank up its solid defense.

For all of its problems, Oregon State is able to keep teams to around 66 points. It has to slow this to a crawl, and it’ll have a shot if it keeps the Cats to under 42% from the field because …

Why Arizona Will Win

Oregon State has yet to win when allowing the other side to hit 42% or more of its shots. Arizona is almost incapable of shooting that poorly.

With the size inside and the best shooting team from three in the Pac-12, Arizona hovers around 49% from the field and has yet to lose when it made 38% or more of its shots.

In the first meeting – an 86-74 win – it made 53% of its shots from the field. The only thing that didn’t make it worse was a slew of turnovers.

No, the Cats aren’t unbeatable at home – Washington State as able to roll in a shocker a few weeks ago, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Cats are unbeatable at home against a team that can’t manufacture points on the move or with the extra pass.

The Oregon State defense is good enough to keep this from getting too insane, but Arizona will bring at least 80 points with it out of the locker room. Oregon State can’t keep up with that in any way.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Beavers miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Beavers should keep the party going from last season with a more than manageable schedule. They still have to deal with most of the former Pac-12 South, and it’s not great to miss Arizona State, but there’s no USC. They might have given Caleb Williams and company a problem last year, but no, you don’t want any part of that if you can avoid it.

Making things even better, the Utah, Washington, and UCLA games are all at home. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Oregon State Football Schedule What Really Matters

The battle with Oregon is over in Eugene. That’s the one big negative with the Pac-12 schedule. All things considered, it’s not bad with those tough games at home and manageable road dates against Colorado, Arizona, Cal, and Washington State.

The spacing is also a plus. There isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks like several Pac-12 teams have to deal with, and with the road game against the Ducks, Oregon State doesn’t leave the state after November 4th.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad. There isn’t a non-conference game against a Power Five program – at San Jose State, UC Davis, and San Diego State is as light as can reasonably be asked for.

No, it won’t be an unbeaten run over the first half of the year, but get to the week off in mid-October with a. solid record, and there’s a chance to put up a terrific win count on the board before the finishing kick against Washington and Oregon.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl What Happened

Oregon State took over right away, owned all phases, and rolled easily with Ben Gulbranson running for a touchdown and hitting Silas Bolden for a 15-yard score on the way to a 30-0 lead. Florida finally got on the board with a 40-yard field goal in the final minute.

The dangerous Florida running game didn’t go anywhere. It was held to just 39 yards on 33 carries, only broke off a few decent runs, and couldn’t find anything that consistently worked. The Beaver defense lived in the Gator backfield.

Oregon State was up 10-0 early in the second half when its drive stalled. It faked the punt, Jack Colletto rumbled for the first down, and the offense kept the momentum driving for a score – the Bolden touchdown catch.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Player of the Game

Deshaun Fenwick, RB Oregon State
Jack Colletto might have made some of the biggest plays – he blocked a punt to go along with his first down off a fake punt – but Fenwick steadily set the tone with 107 yards on 20 carries.

– Penalties: Florida 11 for 82 yards – Oregon State 7 for 50 yards

– Florida QB Jack Miller completed 13-of-22 passes for 180 yards and ran for 13 yards

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl What It All Means

This is a big deal for Oregon State and head coach Jonathan Smith. He just got a new contract – not that he was under real pressure, but the win makes that look stronger – and now he got the program its first ten-win season since 2006.

Just as big – considering how the Beavers flopped in a loss in last year’s LA Bowl – this it the first bowl win since 2013 and the second since 2008. With this, there’s a shot at finishing in the top 15 in the final polls.

Not to diminish what Oregon State was able to do, but this was a true exhibition game for Florida. It was missing QB Anthony Richardson and a slew of other stars, but this should’ve been a better overall performance.

The defense had its issues all year long, but it wasn’t miserable here. Billy Napier’s offense stalled with the ground game unable to pick up the slack without Richardson. Not having him to run the ball was an issue, but overall this was a flat performance.

Napier will get a bit of a pass for a losing season in his first year, but a loss like this – and Florida’s third straight bowl loss including last year’s rough Gasparilla defeat to UCF – won’t help an impatient fan base.

Florida vs Oregon State SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl 5 Things To Know

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– It’s the first Power Five vs Power Five matchup of the bowl season, and both teams have a whole lot to prove. Florida is trying to avoid a losing season under first year head coach Billy Napier, and the program needs to close strong after dropping two straight to close the regular season.

Oregon State comes in rolling on a three-game winning streak taking down six of its last seven games. That’s all great, but it’s the nine-win team against the .500 club. It’s the College Football Playoff’s No. 14 team vs one that lost to Vanderbilt. The expectations are on to beat the SEC team. Jonathan Smith was just given a nice new contract worth over $30 million, and now …

Oregon State has to win one of these bowl things after clunking in last year’s LA Bowl. It was stopped by Utah State 24-13 in the program’s first bowl appearance since the 2013 Hawaii. How special is this? The Beavers are 1-3 in bowl games since beating Pitt 3-0 in the 2008 Sun Bowl, and a win would give them their first ten-win season since 2006.

Let’s just say the last two bowl games didn’t go well for Florida. The team was missing most of its parts in the rough blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to close out the 2020 season, and last year it suffered the indignity of losing to UCF 29-17 in the Gasparilla Bowl.

The Las Vegas Bowl could use some fun. Last year’s 20-13 Wisconsin win over Las Vegas was technically close, but it was hardly gripping, the 2020 game was canceled, and before that five of the six games and ten of the previous 12 were decided by double-digits.

Not only is this the first meeting between the two programs, but this is the first time Oregon State faced an SEC team since losing to LSU 22-21 to open the 2004 season – Missouri was in the Big 12 when the two played in 2006.

Including the Fiesta Bowls in Tempe, this is the furthest west the Florida program has been since losing to Troy Aikman and UCLA in the 1987 Aloha Bowl in Hawaii. It beat the eventual Pac-12 champion Utah in the opener. That was the first game against a current Pac-12 team since losing to Washington 34-7 in the 1989 Freedom Bowl.

Why Florida Will Win The SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl

The running game should still be okay.

The Gators will be missing star QB Anthony Richardson – he caught NFLitis and opted out – but most of the other key parts are around for the offense. The offensive line won’t have guard O’Cyrus Torrence – also preparing for the next level – but overall it’s good enough to pound away for the combination of Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne.

Oregon State’s run defense has been terrific all season long, but it shouldn’t take much to get control in this. The Beavers lost in two of the three games when they allowed 160 yards or more, and Florida has only been held under that four times.

Can Jack Miller get the job done? The former Ohio State Buckeye has talent, he’s more of a pro-style passer than Richardson, and the Gators are getting help from the time off with the receiving corps getting bay more options.

The Florida offense should work, but …

Why Oregon State Will Win The SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl

Yeah, you don’t get better by losing Anthony Richardson.

He’s a special talent with the upside to potentially be a top ten overall pick as the wild card in the 2023 NFL Draft – think a potentially faster Josh Allen with a little bit of time. He’s not alone. Five Gators so far have opted out, and all hands need to be on deck to deal with this Beaver team.

It’s not flashy, but it’s rock-solid with a balanced offense, a great O line, and a defensive front that might not generate much of a pass rush, but holds up well against the run – OSU finished second in the Pac-12 against the run.

Steady matters in this. Florida’s defense is miserable at coming up with third down stops, the run D sometimes doesn’t show up, and Oregon State should be able to pound away.

The Beavers are 8-0 when running for over 175 yards. Florida allows 176 rushing yards per game and is 2-5 when allowing 175 or more.

Why Oregon Will Win

The Pac-12 Championship is there for the taking.

USC is already in, and Oregon can punch its ticket to Las Vegas with a win. If it loses, the door is open for Washington and Utah.

The Ducks bounced back fast from the tough loss to Washington with a gut-check 20-17 win over Utah. Bo Nix played banged up but he’s supposed to be ready to go after getting knocked around late, but it’s the defense that needs to make the difference.

Coming up with third down stops hasn’t been easy, and the pass defense has been hit too hard at times, but the takeaways have been there with two or more in three of the last four games and 13 in the last six games.

Oregon State is 7-0 when running for more than 175 yards and 1-3 when running for that many or fewer. For all of its faults and flaws, Oregon’s defense has only allowed more than 160 yards once – 186 in the win over UCLA.

However …

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Oregon State defense and overall style of play should be a problem.

A monster against the run, the Beavers only allowed more than 100 yards once in the last six games. There isn’t much of a pass rush and there’s not much of disruption happening in the backfield, but that’s by design.

The results are there. The D won’t hold Oregon to under three yards per carry like Utah did last week, but it should be able to keep Nix from taking off.

Offensively, it’s all about the balance and keeping the chains moving. The Beavers are great at controlling the clock, they should own third downs, and they’ll average over four yards per carry.

Oregon is 1-2 when allowing over five yards per pop, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has only been able to average over five yards per carry three times, and Colorado, Arizona State, and Montana State weren’t exactly the most dangerous teams on the slate.

The rivalry aspect of this matters. Oregon State won the last time around in Corvallis and twice in the last three times at home. Underestimate this year’s team at your own peril, but …

It came up short three times – USC, Utah, Washington. Those were the three best teams on the slate, and Oregon is right there, if not better.

The Ducks will come up with two quick scoring drives in the fourth quarter to finally put it away.
