Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers keep on rolling along.

They’re already bowl eligible, and the game that really matters is next week against Oregon, but they’re in the hunt for a ten-win season if they win the next two games and the bowl.

The offense hasn’t been anything special, but it’s functional. It doesn’t make a ton of mistakes – the turnover problem over the first half of the season cleared up nicely – and the running game is averaging close to five yards per carry.

There doesn’t have to be anything fancy here.

Keep the chains moving against the second-worst defense in America on third downs, assume everyone will get time to work against a solid offensive line that should handle the non-existent ASU pass rush, and continue to bend-without-a-lot-of-breaking on defense.

Bowl Projections

Why Arizona State Will Win

It’s been a disastrous season, but it can end strong with a win in the final home game before going to Arizona for the rivalry showdown.

The team is still pushing. The offense wasn’t awful in the loss to Washington State, the passing attack rocked in the win over Colorado and was strong in the loss to UCLA, and the yards will be there against the Oregon State D.

Can the offense be ultra-efficient through the air? It’s asking for way too much out of quarterbacks Emory Jones and Trenton Bourguet, but the team is 3-1 when connecting on 72% of its passes and 0-6 when it doesn’t

Oregon State’s pass defense can be thrown on, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Utah is the only team to get to 70% through the air on the Beavers.

Oregon State will be methodical. The run defense will be a rock, the offense won’t make enough mistakes to matter – the Sun Devil D doesn’t force takeaways – and it’ll get past a few big scoring drives from the home side to get out with a good win.

Cal vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

The Bears are in desperate need of a win.

On a five-game losing streak, the defense has crashed, but it’s more about the team not being able to break through with a lick of luck in several close games.

The offense and passing game keep on working with three touchdown passes in each of the last three games – Jack Plummer went off for over 400 yards against USC – and it all has to crank up against a leaky Oregon State defense.

Cal can’t stop anyone from throwing, so as long as Plummer is on – he’ll get time against an Oregon State defense that doesn’t have a pass rush – this will be a fight.

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Oregon State Will Win

Yeah, the Cal defense. It’s not slowing anyone down.

To be fair, it had to go against USC, Oregon, and Washington over the last three weeks, but everyone is throwing at will against a secondary allowing 300 yards per game.

Oregon State’s offense is coming off a rough day with just 262 yards in the 24-21 loss to Washington last week. It might not bomb away on the Bears, but the ground game will hit 200 yards and there should be a good balance to keep everything going.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State gets to have fun now.

It’s bowl eligible, it has a trip to Arizona State next week before dealing with Oregon, and it can play a little looser. However, it had all that last week and it didn’t work in the bad weather against Washington. Now the team is back home.

This week it’ll deal with a desperate Cal team that will get the O going, but won’t be able to get enough out of the defensive line to be disruptive.

Oregon State vs Washington Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Very, very quietly the Beavers have worked their way back up the Pac-12 standings, became bowl eligible, and they even made the first round of the College Football Playoff top 25 – even if they were disrespected a bit being put at 23.

They’re on a three-game winning streak with the defense dominating against the run – they haven’t allowed 100 yards in any of the last three games – and with a decent enough pass defense to get by.

It’s the other side that might get this done.

The ground attack has been fantastic over the last three games, the downfield passing game should bother the Dawgs for a few big moments.

Oregon State is 6-0 when running for 175 yards or more, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Washington Will Win

No one’s pounding away on the Huskies.

There are issues are against the decent passing teams – allowing 240 yards or more in each of the last six games –  and Oregon State can throw when it has to. Again, though, this Beaver offense has to run and keep running to control the game, and it’s going against a Washington defense that allowed over 150 yards twice.

Granted, those two times came in the two losses to UCLA and Arizona State, but those were on the road. The team is far, far better at home, especially through the air.

The No. 1 passing attack in the country might not bomb away – Oregon State has been decent at keeping most offenses from going off – but the big plays should be there.

Michael Penix Jr. throws for 300 yards, the defensive front holds up and gets behind the line on a regular basis, and all will be fine.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State really is better than it’s being given credit for. It’s solid enough to keep this from getting out of hand, and it’ll be able to match Washington’s offense for a while with a good day from the passing attack.

However, the Huskies will get into the backfield and be disruptive enough to come through in the fourth quarter. Penix Jr. will struggle at times, but a burst of points in the second half will finally make the home crowd breathe a little easier.

Washington State vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

This hasn’t been the Washington State offense it was supposed to be – it’s been good, but it’s not its normal dominant passing self. That’s fine because the defense is getting it done.

So the Cougars couldn’t slow down Oregon or keep USC off the board – almost no one can. The D has been solid against the run – no one has hit 200 yards yet – and the secondary is holding up well enough in a bend-but-don’t-break sort of way.

And yes, the offense is fine. It’s scoring when it gets the chance, Cameron Ward is working around the interceptions, and everything should click a little better against an Oregon State defense that doesn’t bring the pass rush.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Oregon State Will Win

Sorry to get mystical, but there’s something about this Oregon State team.

It got rocked by Utah in Salt Lake City, but it gave USC all it could handle and it found a way to get it done late against Fresno State and Stanford – pulling off a miracle against the Cardinal.

The defense isn’t doing anything too special, but it’s holding up okay against the run – even if it’s giving up 4.6 yards per carry – and the secondary is doing just enough late in games to stay alive.

Washington State doesn’t have a running game to worry about, the O doesn’t stay on the field long enough – Oregon State should have the ball for 35 minutes – and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State should be able to hold up late.

The Oregon State quarterback situation is still a question mark with starter Chance Nolan questionable at best. He was out against Stanford, but Ben Gulbranson got the job done in the thriller.

The difference this week will be the pressure no matter who’s at quarterback – Washington State can get to the quarterback a whole lot better than the Cardinal can.

Oregon State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

You try to play USC and go to Utah and come away with something positive.

The Beavers came painfully close to getting by the Trojans in the 17-16 loss, and they got rocked by the Utes. They were able to move the ball relatively well in both games, and the defense wasn’t that bad in either defeat – neither team hit 200 yards rushing or receiving. So what was the problem?

Turnovers. The Beavers threw four picks in each loss. So how is that any sort of a positive?

Stanford is dead last in the nation in turnover margin. It has yet to recover a defensive fumble and it only has two interceptions to show for all the work.

As long as Oregon State doesn’t make a slew of mistakes it should be okay. That starts with an offensive line that’s among the best in the nation in pass protection, and Stanford isn’t great at getting into the backfield.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Stanford Will Win

You try to play USC, Washington, and Oregon – the last two on the road – and come away with something positive.

The Cardinal might be 1-3, and they have yet to beat an FBS team, but they’re not playing all that poorly considering they dealt with three of the top 15, maybe ten, teams in college football.

The pass defense has been a tad rocky and there wasn’t any stopping the Oregon ground game with QB Bo Nix tearing off a huge dash, but the passing game has been okay, the penalties are non-existent, and life will be a whole lot better if the team can start to even out the turnover margin on a regular basis.

Oregon State doesn’t generate a pass rush and, again, it has its own turnover issues.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a late night game for most of the country, and it might not be between two of the big names going right now in the Pac-12.

Even with Oregon State starting QB Chance Nolan out, it’ll be worth staying up for.

Again, both teams had to deal with the stars on the slate and both won the games they were supposed to. Both can come into this expecting to get a strong win.

The Stanford defense is having problems – the takeaway issue really is a big deal – and the running game stalled over the last few weeks, but it should all pick up a bit this week.

The Oregon State offense is having problems, but as long as the interceptions chill out, it should be able to keep things moving.

Stanford has the better special teams, it’s playing at home, and it’s due for a solid win in a close, entertaining battle.
