Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Buffaloes miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would’ve been nice to have Cal on the schedule. That’s one of the few teams in the Pac-12 that Colorado – even an improved one under Deion Sanders – can look to for a likely win, but on the plus side, not having to deal with Washington helps.

There are five Pac-12 road games, with dates at Oregon, UCLA, and Utah the biggest problems. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Colorado Football Schedule What Really Matters

Unlike most Pac-12 teams, Colorado doesn’t have to deal with a run of three road games in four weeks. Throw in the week off coming on October 21st, and there’s a nice midseason stretch when the team only leaves Boulder once from October 7th to November 17th. That’s when the wins have to start piling up, because …

Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a rough slate for Coach Prime’s bunch.

The improvements are coming, but there’s still a whole lot of rebuilding to do. Starting out at TCU and then dealing with Nebraska doesn’t exactly ease into the era. Throw in the always testy showdown against Colorado State, and there’s no true layup on the slate.

There are enough winnable games to make a big jump, though. Get by Nebraska and Colorado State, and the Buffs can looks to home games against Stanford and Arizona to get in the mix for six victories and a bowl. Lose any of those, and it’ll be tough.

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Pac-12 slate?

Washington got to miss USC and Utah last year, and now it’s Washington State’s turn to catch the mammoth break. The Trojans rolled Wazzu 30-14, the Utes won a 21-17 fight, and now they’re been replaced with Colorado and UCLA being left off the Pac-12 schedule. That’s a solid deal.

Not all is perfect with the Cougar slate, though.

Washington State Football Schedule What Really Matters

Washington State gets five Pac-12 road games. One of them is Washington, but that counts. That also means four of the last six games are away from home, and it gets even worse than that.

The Arizona State game is on the road on October 28th. The only thing that matters about that – besides the travel – is Tempe, Arizona is probably going to be nicer weather-wise than Pullman.

Arizona? That’s a home game, but the weather probably won’t be that bad on October 14th. Colorado is used to playing in snow and cold – if that happens – meaning Stanford on November 4th is likely the only team to potentially be affected by the surroundings.

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Cougars were able to win seven games last year even with USC and Utah to deal with. This schedule is just workable enough to hope to at least his the 2022 mark.

Wisconsin is a home game, but this should be a far more dangerous Badger team. Going to Colorado State and dealing with Northern Colorado shouldn’t be a problem.

Stanford, Arizona, Colorado. None of them went bowling, and all three are home dates. Take care of at least two of the non-conference games, handle the winnable home dates, and pull off a win at, say, Cal and/or Arizona State, and all should be okay.

Washington Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Huskies miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Huskies got to enjoy missing USC and Utah – yeah, that helped the 10-2 regular season record – but now they’re back on.

Washington lost to UCLA, but now that’s not a worry. The 54-7 win over Colorado was fun, but that’s not happening this year. The Bruins and Buffaloes are off the slate, but that’s not a bad deal overall – the Huskies still get to face everyone from the former Pac-12 North, including Cal and Stanford. But …

Washington Football Schedule What Really Matters

The USC game is in Los Angeles, and that’s followed up by the date with Utah.

So last year’s two best Pac-12 teams have to be dealt with in back-to-back weeks in the second half of the season. Making this even worse is that they’re part of a run of three road games in four weeks, and going to Oregon State won’t be a picnic.

On the plus side overall, there are just our Pac-12 road games. Going to Arizona and Stanford isn’t that bad, and getting the Utes, Oregon, and Washington State in Seattle is terrific.

Washington Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s no real fluff to use as a true tune-up.

Yeah, Tulsa is close, but that’s an FBS team – there aren’t any Central Creampuff Tech’s to use as a paycheck scrimmage.

Starting with Boise State isn’t easy, and going to Michigan State should be much more difficult than the home test last year. Overall, though, it’s an okay schedule with just enough issues to keep Washington from doing better than last year’s two-loss run.

Even so, this is still a dangerous team that could put up a monster record if it wins two of three against Oregon, USC, and Utah.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Ducks miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would be nice to miss a USC or Utah from what was the Pac-12 South, but not having to deal with UCLA isn’t a bad thing and not playing Arizona this year might be a big positive.

Here’s the biggest bonus – USC, Oregon State, Washington State – those last two will be even nastier this season – are all coming to Autzen. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Oregon Football Schedule What Really Matters

For a program that’s thinking really, really College Football Playoff big, there are just enough nasty road dates to be a problem.

Going to Texas Tech early on will be dangerous. Arizona State is always difficult at home, and going to Utah and Washington will be battles. Again, for what Oregon is dreaming of, there can only be one loss on the way to the Pac-12 Championship. That’s not going to be easy with those landmines.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Start with this – they’re not opening the season with Georgia this time around. Everything else is easy by comparison, but going to Texas Tech is a problem.

If the Ducks really are Pac-12 Championship/CFP good, they should be able to get through this without losing twice. With all due respect to a strong Oregon State team – because it’s an Oregon home game – at Texas Tech, at Washington, at Utah, USC. Win three of those four, and they should be deep in the mix for everything they’re shooting for.

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cardinal miss from the Pac-12 slate?

New head coach Troy Taylor has a whole lot of work to do – there aren’t any layups for the Cardinal in the Pac-12, so it’s a plus no matter who they’re missing. Even so, it would’ve been nice to not have to play USC or UCLA from the old Pac-12 South. Considering Arizona State is rebuilding, missing it on the slate hurts. However, missing Utah makes up for it.

Stanford Football Schedule What Really Matters

There aren’t any massive breaks.

Going to Hawaii shouldn’t be a problem to start the season, but that’s a long trip to kick things off on a Friday before having to go to USC the week after. Of course Sacramento State has to be a win for a Pac-12 team, but that’s a dangerous FCS team that won’t be a total layup.

Winning early is a must – the Cardinal have to take care of as many home games as possible with a run of five in six games from September 9th through November 4th because …

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yikes on the finishing kick.

Stanford won’t be a sure thing against Arizona at home, and it’ll likely be the underdog against Oregon, UCLA, and Washington, but it has to find a way to come up with an upset or three in Palo Alto because of the second half after the break.

Along with the home dates against the Bruins and Huskies, going to Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon State will be a problem, and hosting Notre Dame after dealing with Cal won’t be a breeze.

Beat Arizona, though, and there’s a shot to start 3-1. There’s a good chance to piece together three wins the rest of the way to get bowl eligible – with a little bit of luck.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Bears miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Bears catch an awful break missing both Arizona and Colorado. Both of them are going to be better, but they’re still on the lower end of the Pac-12 scale. Making things worse, they have to go on the road to Utah, Oregon, and UCLA, however …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Cal Football Schedule What Really Matters

The rough stretch on the road comes late, which only matters because one of those games is over at Stanford – it’s a road game, but hardly taxing. The team only leaves California three times until November and just four times overall.

There are back-to-back road games just that one time at the end – Stanford and UCLA. With that the team has to take care of things at home with an upset somewhere. The game changes with a big performance against Auburn or Oregon State or Washington State – the Bears need to take down at least one of those.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not all that bad. As long as Cal beats North Texas on the road to start the season, there’s a good shot to at least bank three wins before October. It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins without a few huge improvements – Cal should be the underdog at least seven times, and likely closer to nine – but it’s at least a manageable slate.

Utah Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Utes miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The two-time defending Pac-12 champs don’t get a whole lot of schedule breaks overall. Last year they didn’t get Cal, but they also caught a massive solid by not getting Washington.

This time around there’s no Washington State – that’s not a bad thing considering what a tough battle that was in a 21-17 Ute win last season – to go along with the horrible break …

No Stanford. This year, that’s the Pac-12 team you want to face. The Utes took it down 42-7 in 2022.

Utah Football Schedule What Really Matters

Cal is a home game, but the date with Huskies is up in Seattle in mid-November. That’s a problem made worse by the road game at USC and the trip to Corvallis to deal with a nasty Oregon State squad.

There might be back-to-back road games against Washington and Arizona in mid-November, but there are just four Pac-12 game away from Salt Lake City. Getting UCLA and Oregon at home helps.

Utah Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Give the Utes credit. They’re not shying away from a non-conference challenge (cough … UCLA … cough).

Now Florida has to deal with Rice-Eccles.

It was one of the better games of last season, and it came in the opener. Utah had the Gators in big, big trouble before Cam Rising’s late interception. That starts the season followed up by a trip to Baylor.

The overall schedule is just hard enough to keep the Utes from getting to the College Football Playoff – there are at least two losses in there somewhere – but it’s not nasty enough to keep them from playing for another Pac-12 championship.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Beavers miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Beavers should keep the party going from last season with a more than manageable schedule. They still have to deal with most of the former Pac-12 South, and it’s not great to miss Arizona State, but there’s no USC. They might have given Caleb Williams and company a problem last year, but no, you don’t want any part of that if you can avoid it.

Making things even better, the Utah, Washington, and UCLA games are all at home. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Oregon State Football Schedule What Really Matters

The battle with Oregon is over in Eugene. That’s the one big negative with the Pac-12 schedule. All things considered, it’s not bad with those tough games at home and manageable road dates against Colorado, Arizona, Cal, and Washington State.

The spacing is also a plus. There isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks like several Pac-12 teams have to deal with, and with the road game against the Ducks, Oregon State doesn’t leave the state after November 4th.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad. There isn’t a non-conference game against a Power Five program – at San Jose State, UC Davis, and San Diego State is as light as can reasonably be asked for.

No, it won’t be an unbeaten run over the first half of the year, but get to the week off in mid-October with a. solid record, and there’s a chance to put up a terrific win count on the board before the finishing kick against Washington and Oregon.

USC Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Trojans miss from the Pac-12 slate?

In one of the more unfortunate scheduling quirks of of 2022, USC was able to miss both Oregon and Washington. That was a huge part of the puzzle to get the Trojans within a hamstring of the College Football Playoff.

The two other big boys are back on the slate now in back-to-back weeks in November. That stinks, but missing both Oregon State – who was a nasty out in 2022 – and Washington State isn’t a bad deal.

USC Football Schedule What Really Matters

Yeah, having Oregon and Washington back on the schedule is a big deal, but … boo hoo. If USC really is improved enough defensively to be back in the Pac-12 Championship and CFP mix, there’s no real problem with the conference slate.

There are only four Pac-12 road games and five away dates overall. Washington has to come to LA, UCLA has to make the trip down the road, and best of all, Utah is a home game. Three of the conference road games against Cal, Arizona State, and Colorado are about as manageable as they get. The date at Oregon isn’t.

USC Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

San Jose State, Nevada, Stanford, a week off, at Arizona State, at Colorado, Arizona. That means USC plays one team that went bowling in 2022 before the middle of October, and San Jose State is hardly anything to get into a twist over.

However, there’s a run of three road games in four weeks, and the end of the fun is Notre Dame. The finishing kick is rough with that date against the Irish, Utah, at Cal, Washington, at Oregon, UCLA, but is USC is that good, getting back to the Pac-12 Championship at 11-1 is possible.

With Washington and Oregon back in the mix, though – along with the road game at Notre Dame – it might not be probable.

UCLA Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Bruins miss from the Pac-12 slate?

Last year USC missed Oregon and Washington. Now it’s UCLA’s turn.

Considering the missed teams in conference play still fall along former divisional lines, not having to deal with the Ducks or Huskies from the former Pac-12 North is about as big a break as it possibly gets.

However …

UCLA Football Schedule What Really Matters

It’s not all happy and fun in Pac-12 play.

Going down the road to USC isn’t exactly a road trip, but having to open up the conference season at Utah is a bear. In all there are five conference road trips. Arizona – a massive loss for UCLA last year – is even better this season and it’s in Tucson.

That’s tough, going to Oregon State is even nastier, and while Stanford shouldn’t be a problem, it’s a part of a rough run of three road games in four weeks.

UCLA Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad.

UCLA didn’t exactly extend itself last year in non-conference play – Bowling Green, Alabama State, South Alabama – and there aren’t any Power Five programs among this year’s crop. Coastal Carolina is interesting and going to San Diego State is dangerous, but if UCLA is any sort of a player this year, those two have to be wins.

Again, no Oregon and no Washington means the world – that’s a beauty of a parting gift before going off to the Big Ten. It’s a slate built to push for ten wins if everything reloads in a hurry, but those three road games against USC, Utah, and Oregon State will mean everything.
