Why Oregon Will Win

The Pac-12 Championship is there for the taking.

USC is already in, and Oregon can punch its ticket to Las Vegas with a win. If it loses, the door is open for Washington and Utah.

The Ducks bounced back fast from the tough loss to Washington with a gut-check 20-17 win over Utah. Bo Nix played banged up but he’s supposed to be ready to go after getting knocked around late, but it’s the defense that needs to make the difference.

Coming up with third down stops hasn’t been easy, and the pass defense has been hit too hard at times, but the takeaways have been there with two or more in three of the last four games and 13 in the last six games.

Oregon State is 7-0 when running for more than 175 yards and 1-3 when running for that many or fewer. For all of its faults and flaws, Oregon’s defense has only allowed more than 160 yards once – 186 in the win over UCLA.

However …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Oregon State defense and overall style of play should be a problem.

A monster against the run, the Beavers only allowed more than 100 yards once in the last six games. There isn’t much of a pass rush and there’s not much of disruption happening in the backfield, but that’s by design.

The results are there. The D won’t hold Oregon to under three yards per carry like Utah did last week, but it should be able to keep Nix from taking off.

Offensively, it’s all about the balance and keeping the chains moving. The Beavers are great at controlling the clock, they should own third downs, and they’ll average over four yards per carry.

Oregon is 1-2 when allowing over five yards per pop, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has only been able to average over five yards per carry three times, and Colorado, Arizona State, and Montana State weren’t exactly the most dangerous teams on the slate.

The rivalry aspect of this matters. Oregon State won the last time around in Corvallis and twice in the last three times at home. Underestimate this year’s team at your own peril, but …

It came up short three times – USC, Utah, Washington. Those were the three best teams on the slate, and Oregon is right there, if not better.

The Ducks will come up with two quick scoring drives in the fourth quarter to finally put it away.

Oregon vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon is beaten up.

Even at full strength it wouldn’t have been able to handle what was coming in  Salt Lake City against Utah, but there are a whole lot of things being pieced together.

Oregon State will know what it needs to do going into this – Washington State has to lose to Washington on Friday night – but no matter what, it’s the big rivalry date that could make the season with a second straight win in the series.

It stars with keeping the chains moving.

The Beavers have just enough offensive balance keep things moving however they need to. The offensive line has been fantastic, the running game leads the Pac-12, and there’s more than enough pass protection to get the short-range passes going.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Oregon Will Win

Win, get in.

Yeah, Oregon has a slew of injuries, but so does everyone else. This is still the most talented team in the Pac-12, and it should be able to get its offense going at home with the pop needed on the ground to take control early.

Oregon State might be all about the time of possession and owning the tempo, but Oregon is just as good at converting third downs. The O line should be able to take over against a Beaver defense without too much of a pass rush.

Run well and it’s a win. Cal and Colorado were able to run over the Beavers and pulled off victories, Washington State was able to throw just fine and win, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State is 1-4 on the road with the lone victory coming against USC. It’s not that the location of the field should matter that much, but Oregon will be energized after what happened last week.

The Oregon narrative continues. It loses the a November road game it can’t afford to give away, it gets it back in time to go to the Pac-12 Championship, wins, and then it’s off to win the Rose Bowl.

It starts here with a great win in a tough game. Oregon State isn’t going to make this easy.

Why Oregon State Will Win

Yeah, the Beavers lost to Oregon in the last game of the regular season, but they won 75-64 in Eugene back in late January by nailing 22-of-24 free throws and getting a bad shooting day from the Ducks.

But that’s what Oregon State does. It might not be a high-powered shooting team, but it’s just that good at stopping teams from three and on the other side it’s fantastic at moving the ball around.

It took a massive comeback and overtime to do it, but they beat UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal by hitting from three, stopping the Bruins from the outside, and nailing their free throws.

However …

Why Oregon Will Win

The Oregon State three point defense doesn’t always work. It might be good at keeping everyone to around 30%, but Oregon couldn’t seem to miss in the 80-67 win in Corvallis a few days ago.

The best three-point shooting team in the Pac-12 nailed a season-high 15 against the Beavers, and that was coming off a hot shooting day against UCLA coming off big days against Arizona and Cal.

On Thursday, the Ducks hit 56% from three to win 91-73 in an easy rout. Oregon State might be playing well overall, but if Oregon gets going, that’s it. The Beavers can’t keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

The Beavers won’t keep up.

This is a fun Oregon State team that can all of a sudden start to make a whole lot of noise for the NCAAs if it can pull this off, but it’s just not consistent enough from three to do this.

Yeah, it nailed 40% from three against UCLA, but it’s been painful at times over the last few games including an 0-for-10 performance from the outside against Cal and hitting 4-of-17 against the Ducks.

Oregon won’t hit 65% from three this time around, but it’ll make enough to move on.

Oregon (9-2) vs Oregon State (7-5) Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State has the passing ability to give Oregon problems.

This is a good Duck team with a strong defense, and it generates a whole lot of points by coming up with steals. But the Beavers don’t turn the ball over enough to give Oregon what it needs.

Getting to the line is a big deal for OSU, too. Shooting lots of free throws only takes the team so far, but for the most part, when it’s getting to the line, that means the offense is working. This isn’t particularly a great team from three, but if it’s getting to the rim, and if it’s grabbing the offensive boards like it can, it has a shot.

Why Oregon Will Win

Oregon doesn’t normally allow a slew of offensive rebounds.

Colorado came up with 12 and pulled off the win. That was Oregon’s only loss since the opener against Missouri, but the team is just active enough to attack the glass to go along with all the turnovers the D forces.

As long as the Ducks are moving the ball around well, and as long as their shooting like they normally do, there shouldn’t be a problem against a Beaver team that can’t keep up in a shooting contest.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State will bring the fight in a good rivalry game, but it won’t be able to hit the threes late that the Ducks will. This isn’t an Oregon offense that relies on the three, but it’s been taking more and more lately and it’s working.

Oregon State hasn’t given up double-digit threes this year. It will in this.

Oregon (3-0) vs Oregon State (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Oregon Will Win

The offense has figured it out.

It’s been a rough run for the Pac-12 so far to get the offensive production rolling – no one’s sharp, everything has been rugged, the O lines haven’t been right – but Oregon has managed to do enough to get by.

The team hasn’t been perfect, the defense hasn’t been a rock, but the offense leads the Pac-12 in total yards, the passing game is great with a whole lot of big plays, and Tyler Shough has been solid.

Oregon State struggled against the run over the first few games, and last week it had problems with Chase Garbers and the Cal passing attack. The pass rush hasn’t shown up yet and the third down stops aren’t there – Oregon will keep the chains moving.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Oregon defensive front hasn’t been anything great, either.

There aren’t enough plays in the backfield so far on a consistent basis, it got run over way too easily by UCLA, and the team overall hasn’t been nearly as sharp or as dominant as it should be.

Oregon State is dangerous. RB Jermar Jefferson has been phenomenal so far – 120 yards or more in all three games – QB Tristan Gebbia has been inconsistent, but okay, and the team is bringing just enough pop to keep up the pace with whatever Oregon does.

The overall stats aren’t great, but the Beavers have the linebackers to keep up and contain the Oregon backfield. Come with a few takeaways – there’s been a slight fumbling problem with the Ducks – and this gets interesting.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

The positive for Oregon is that it’s 3-0 and hasn’t played all that well. Eventually, the team is going to put it all tougher, the defense will start to be more productive, and the offense will show the normal knockout punch ability Duck fans are used to.

It won’t be this week, though.

Oregon State won’t win, but it’ll be plucky enough to make things interesting in the second half once Gebbia gets on a little bit of a roll.

Why Oregon State Will Win

Jake Luton, get this passing machine up and running and don’t stop taking chances down the field.

Oregon State’s passing game hasn’t always been perfect, but it’s not screwing up. Luton has not thrown three picks on the year, and the only times he’s been off was in a strange game against Washington, at Hawaii early on, and against Utah. Against everyone else, he’s been able to prove he can bomb away.

He threw for over ten yards per pass in the wins 54-53 loss to Washington State has week, he came close to 13 yards per throw in the win over Arizona, and he was on fire against UCLA.

How did Oregon lose to Arizona State? Jayden Daniels averaged 12.4 yards per pass, came up with a massive late throw, and ended up with three touchdowns and no picks.

As good as the Duck defense has been throughout the year, it’s allowed three touchdowns passes in four of its last five games and gave up eight yards or more per pass in three of them.

Luton has to be fearless. With the way Oregon is about to play, and with Beaver bowl eligibility on the line, this is no time to be timid.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oregon Will Win

Justin Herbert threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns against Arizona State, but now his pro potential is being questioned, there’s some concern about his mettle to handle the big moment, and …

Whatever. He’s might not have been perfect against ASU, but when he was on, he showed off the arm, the power, and the ability that few quarterbacks can bring to the table.

Everyone saw the loss to the Sun Devils, but the brilliant against USC seems to have been blown off, the dominance against Arizona should get more credit, and even though he hasn’t been Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa this season, he’s been a rock with 220 yards or more in every game.

Oregon State just got hit for 606 yards by Washington State’s Anthony Gordon.

The Beaver secondary isn’t just giving up big pass plays; it’s giving up the deep ball. Luton and the offensive side have the potential to do big things against the Ducks, but there isn’t enough there, because …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon will really, really care.

It’s the Civil War against OSU, so of course it’s going to care, but the focus would’ve been a whole lot more on the Pac-12 Championship and the Utah game showdown if the Ducks were 10-1 and coming off a domination against Arizona State.

The Ducks don’t need this game – they’re off to the Rose Bowl if Oregon State wins and Utah rolls on the way to the College Football Playoff – but they’re going to come out hot after last week’s disappointment.

The defense will stuff the Beaver ground game, it’ll hold Luton in check, and Herbert and the Duck attack will get hot early and roll from there.
