No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Oklahoma Sooners Offense 3 Things To Know

Can this really keep going at this ridiculous level? Last year’s offense wasn’t quite as productive as the 2018 version, which wasn’t quite as productive as the 2017 version, but it still finished third in the nation in total offense and sixth in scoring O, averaging 548 yards and 42 points per game.

Head coach Lincoln Riley and co-offensive coordinators Bill Bedenbaugh and Cale Gundy have the formula down – smart, quick-decision making quarterbacks who can hit the dangerous receivers in open spaces in stride so they can run very, very far.

But unlike the last three seasons, Oklahoma will likely start the season with a home-recruited talent for the first time since Trevor Knight got the call in 2014.

Be stunned if Spencer Rattler isn’t the next really, really big college football quarterback.

The superstar recruit last year got in a little bit of work – completing 7-of-11 passes with a touchdown – but he preserved a year of eligibility while Jalen Hurts got a break from being fantastic. 6-0 and 198 pounds, Rattler isn’t all that big, but he’s a high-powered passer who can run. If all goes according to plan, this is his offense to run for the next three years, maybe four.

Sophomore Tanner Mordecai was a great recruit in 2018, and while he’ll get plenty of chances to take the job, this is almost certainly going to be Rattler’s gig. If Mordecai transfers, things get really, really sketchy with true freshman Chandler Morris or JUCO transfer Colt Atkinson the likely No. 3.

[jwplayer tNsRFtZa]

The Sooner offense is so much fun when the passing game is winging it around the yard that it’s easy to push aside how great the ground attack is. Jalen Hurts ran for close to 1,300 yards and 20 scores, and Kennedy Brooks took off for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns. Brooks should be a lock for 1,000 yards for the third year in a row, and it’ll be a revolving door behind him.

With Trey Sermon transferring to Ohio State, 6-0, 229-pound senior Rhamondre Stevenson will eventually get the No. 2 job after finishing third on the team with 515 yards and six touchdowns – he’s currently suspended for the first five games of the season after being suspended by the NCAA for a positive drug test – but freshman Seth McGowan is a talented option who’ll get an early look.

No matter who’s running the ball, it’ll all work behind a phenomenal line that should be among the nation’s best. It’s loaded with all-star talent with all five starters expected back, starting with junior Creed Humphrey at center and junior Adrian Ealy at one of the tackle spots.

CeeDee Lamb is gone to the Dallas Cowboys, but great recruiting classes are about to payoff at receiver. Charleston Rambo was second on the team with 43 catches and five scores – averaging over 17 yards per catch – and 2019 star recruit Jadon Haselwood will play a huge role if and when he’s all back full after suffering an offseason leg injury.

Trejan Bridges is a special talent, but he’s expected to miss the first five games of the season after being suspended by the NCAA. UCLA transfer Theo Howard will eventually be a factor after suffering a torn Achilles tendon. There are more than enough talents – Theo Wease was every bit the recruit last year that Haselwood was – to keep the passing game explosive.

NFL Draft 2020: Big 12

Outside of Oklahoma taking over the No. 1 overall pick lately, it’s been a lonely time for the Big 12 in the first round of the NFL Draft.

After Kyler Murray went to Arizona to kick things off last year, the next Big 12 pick was fellow Sooner Marquise Brown to Baltimore at the 25. TCU LJ Collier went to Seattle at the 29.

The year before, Baker Mayfield was selected first by Cleveland, and then … nothing. The Big 12 was shutout in the rest of the round. In 2017, that Patrick Mahomes guy turned out to be okay for Kansas City at the 10, but that was it.

This year the line is 3.5. It’s going to take some effort to get there.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Part of the problem is that it’s going to take a little while to get this thing going.

Jalen Hurts won’t go first overall like the last two Oklahoma quarterbacks, and he’s not likely to be picked at all in the first round. However, his top target last year will go in the top 15.

WR CeeDee Lamb is a possible top ten overall pick, but he’ll likely go in the 12-to-15 range. But that just one Big 12 player and half the draft will probably be over before there’s another one taken.

Sooner LB Kenneth Murray will go somewhere in the top 25, and then it starts to get interesting.

TCU DT Ross Blacklock should go somewhere in the final 5-to-7 picks, but that’s getting a bit risky. It’s a deep class with at least 40 players who could end up finding their way into the top 32.

And you still need one more for the over.

Texas Tech LB Jordan Brooks is a possibility, but that’s a flier. Oklahoma DT Neville Gallimore will be on the radar, as will Baylor WR Denzel Mims and TCU CB Jeff Gladney.

That’s why …

[lawrence-related id=510897]

How Many Big 12 Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Go with the over on the 3.5.

Lamb, Murray and Blacklock will go in the top 32, and there are more than enough options who’ll at least be on the radar late.

All it takes is one team to like Mims’ combination of speed and size, Gladney’s ball skills, or Gallimore’s athleticism for the position. Brooks is a little more of a long shot, but he’s at least in the mix.

Best of all, there isn’t much value in the under, and the over is the better call.

NFL Draft 2020: Oklahoma

Has it really been more than ten years since Oklahoma owned the first round of the NFL Draft?

In 2010, QB Sam Bradford went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams. DT Gerald McCoy went No. 3 to Tampa Bay, OT Trent Williams went fourth to Washington, and TE Jermaine Gresham was taken 21st by Cincinnati.

After that, though, OT Lane Johnson to Philadelphia in 2013 was the only Sooner to be selected in the first from 2011 to 2017.

And then Oklahoma gave the NFL Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

For such a powerhouse of a program, 2019 – WR Marquise Brown went to Baltimore with the 25th pick – was the last time since that 2010 run when OU   had two players selected in the first round.

The line is set at 2.5.

In the long and glorious history of Oklahoma football, it’s had two players taken in the first round several times, but 2010 was the only time it had more.

To win on the over, you’re asking for the second-best Oklahoma first round ever.

It’ll be a mild upset if any OU player is selected in the top ten, but WR CeeDee Lamb should be close. He’s one guaranteed first rounder, and LB Kenneth Murray should be a lock somewhere around the 20s.

And then there’s …. uhhhhhhh ….

Can Jalen Hurts possibly be a late first round flier? That’s a major stretch – he’ll be a third rounder.

Your only realistic hope for the over is for DT Neville Gallimore to find his way into the low 30s – and it’s possible. He’s a rising prospect in the process who should be taken early on Day Two, but it’s not all that far from around the 38 to 31st or 32nd.

[lawrence-related id=510995]

How Many Oklahoma Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Part of the problem is that Oklahoma just doesn’t have a whole lot of draftable options. Lamb, Murray, Gallimore and Hurts are the only Sooners likely to be selected.

That means to get the over, you 1) need three of the four viable prospects to be picked in the top 32, and 2) you’re asking the gods for history to be made.

That +310 on the over is just so enticing – really, Hurts or Gallimore can’t get in there? – but don’t do it.

It’s no fun, but expect only two Sooners to go on Day One.

Greatest NFL Draft Picks of All-Time From Every Big 12 School

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from each of the Big 12 programs. Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from each of the Big 12 programs. Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

The current Big 12 programs have more than their share of good all-time NFL players and draft picks, but the superstars aren’t there compared to the other top leagues. Even so, who are the Big 12’s best NFL draft selections of all-time?

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the Big 12 schools – these are the best draft picks.

That means that guys who had great careers for someone other than the teams that drafted them get knocked down a peg, or aren’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness. You’ll get the idea.

CFN 2020 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings
from the college perspective …
QB | RB | WR | TE | OT | OG & C
DE | DT | LB | CB | Safeties

Baylor Greatest NFL Draft Picks

LB Mike Singletary
1981, 2nd round, 38th pick overall, Chicago

Silver: DT Tom Sestak, 1962, 17th round, 132nd pick overall, Buffalo
Bronze: OT/DE Jimmy Ray Smith, 1954, 6th round, 64th pick overall, Cleveland

The Chicago Bears got their leader and quarterback for some of the greatest defenses in NFL history. Singletary was a seven-time All-Pro who went to the Pro Bowl in each of the last ten seasons of his 12-year Hall of Fame career. He was named the 1985 and 1988 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Tom Sestak was a three-time All-Pro for Buffalo in the early 1960s. He only played seven years, but he was the anchor of the line.

Jimmy Ray Smith played seven years for Cleveland as a mainstay of the O line at left guard. He was a three-time All-Pro and went to five Pro Bowls.

Iowa State Greatest NFL Draft Picks

LB Matt Blair
1974, 2nd round, 51st pick overall, Minnesota

Silver: OG Keith Sims, 1990, 2nd round, 39th pick overall, Miami
Bronze: S Marcus Robertson, 1991, 4th round, 102nd pick overall, Houston

One of the leaders and stars of the amazing Purple People Eater defenses of the 1970s and 1980s, Blair played 12 years for the Vikings and was named to the 1980 All-Pro team with six Pro Bowl appearances.

Keith Sims got to three straight Pro Bowls as a starting left guard for Miami for eight years, while Marcus Robertson was named an All-Pro for the Houston Oilers, finishing with 22 interceptions in a ten-year run with the franchise.

Kansas Greatest NFL Draft Picks

RB Gale Sayers
1965, 1st round, 4th pick overall, Chicago

Silver: FS Nolan Cromwell, 1977, 2nd round, 21st pick overall, Los Angeles Rams
Bronze: QB John Hadl, 1962, 3rd round, 24th pick overall, San Diego

It might have been a way-too-short run, but Gale Sayers managed to earn All-Pro recognition five times in his five years as a starting running back.

John Riggins is a Hall of Famer, but that’s mostly for what he did for Washington, not the New York Jets. The same goes for tackle Mike McCormack, a Hall of Famer for Cleveland after spending one year with the New York Yanks.

Nolan Cromwell was an all-star quarterback for the Jayhawks, but he turned into a three-time All-Pro safety for the Rams over his 11-year career. John Hadl spent 11 years with San Diego throwing for close to 27,000 yards with 201 touchdowns going to five Pro Bowls.

[lawrence-related id=484481]

Kansas State Greatest NFL Draft Picks

RB Larry Brown
1969, 8th round, 191st pick overall, Washington

Silver: QB Steve Grogan, 1975, 5th round, 116th pick overall, New England
Bronze: CB Terence Newman, 2003, 1st round, 5th pick overall, San Diego

Larry Brown only lasted eight years with Washington, but he was a two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler running for 5,875 yards and 35 scores. In 1972, he earned the NFL MVP honor running for 1,125 yards and five scores and catching 37 passes.

Steve Grogan was with New England for 16 years, and while he was never an elite quarterback, he finished with close to 27,000 yards with 182 touchdown passes. He also ran for 35 scores.

Terence Newman was a slight disappointment for Dallas considering he was the fifth pick overall, but he went to two Pro Bowls and lasted nine years with the team making 32 interceptions before moving on to keep the career rolling.

Oklahoma Greatest NFL Draft Picks

RB Adrian Peterson, Minnesota
2007, 1st round, 7th pick overall

Silver: DE/DT Lee Roy Selmon, 1976, 1st round, 1st pick overall, Tampa Bay
Bronze: CB Bobby Boyd, 1960, 10th round, 119th pick overall, Baltimore

Outside of a massive scandal, Adrian Peterson worked out just fine for the Vikings in his sure-thing Hall of Fame career, running for close to 12,000 yards in his first nine seasons in Minnesota. He ran for ten touchdowns or more in every year but the suspended 2014 and injured 2016 campaigns.

Lee Roy Selmon was the first ever draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going on to have a nine-year Hall of Fame career with six straight Pro Bowl appearances. He was named the 1979 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Bobby Boyd doesn’t have a highway named after him like Selmon, but the three-time All-Pro was among the best defensive backs of the 1960s, coming up with 57 career interceptions.

Trey Sermon Transfers To Ohio State

Former Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon has made his decision. He’s transferring to Ohio State.

[jwplayer XGQ95RxB]

Former Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon has made his decision. He’s transferring to Ohio State.

Ohio State just got a terrific talent to throw into the backfield mix.

Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon entered the transfer portal, leaving a loaded Sooner backfield for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have talent at running back, but they could use a star.

QB Justin Fields is still the star of the offense, but the loss of JK Dobbins took away a 2,003-yard, 21-touchdown, 23-catch back who – if it’s possible for a player of his production – was nationally underappreciated.

Sermon isn’t Dobbins, but he’s a proven producer who came up with 2,076 career rushing yards with 22 touchdowns, and caught 36 passes for 391 yards and three scores.

The 6-0, 216-pounder is quick and tears off yards in chunks, but he’s not the home-run hitter Dobbins was. The starter in the rotation early on last season, he suffered a knee injury and lost his workload, carrying the ball just nine times in the final nine games.

In 2018, though, he ran for 947 yards and 13 scores, hitting the 100-yard mark four times as the occasional feature-back. He won’t be asked to turn into a workhorse for the Buckeyes, but handling the ball 15 times or more will never be an issue.

Ohio State gets back Master Teague – the second-leading rusher with 789 yards and four touchdowns last year – but he’s coming off a torn Achilles’ heel. There are a whole slew of promising young backs, but expect Sermon to be the main man early on, at least until Teague is ready.

As a freshman, Sermon ran 17 times for 62 yards in the 2017 31-16 win over the Buckeyes.

Big 12 Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which Big 12 schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which Big 12 schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which Big 12 schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

Why Baylor Will Win

This is a dangerous Oklahoma team that shoots just well enough and it just careful enough with the ball to be pesky. However, it doesn’t do anything to take the ball away, and it’s light on the offensive rebounds.

Against a Baylor team that stops just about everyone in key moments – it’s 12th in the nation in defensive field goal percentage – there can’t be any empty trips for the Sooners, and there will be.

OU can’t count on a slew of easy points. It doesn’t force turnovers, and Baylor doesn’t give them up. It’s going to take a nearly perfect shooting day for the home team to pull this off.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners almost pulled off the road upset over the Bears a few weeks ago in a 61-57 loss that came down to a late missed shot. How did they make it a battle? They hit from three an Baylor didn’t, and they matched up well shot for shot in the second half.

They have to keep the game at their own pace. They can’t let Baylor go off and they can’t lose big on the boards. They don’t turn the ball over and make a ton of mistakes, and they have to make this a game about free throws.

They don’t commit a ton of fouls, and they’re great on the line. Baylor is just okay in both areas.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma has won its last five home games since losing to Kansas. It’ll keep the game relatively low scoring in the first half before the pace picks up in the second.

Baylor will get a scare, but it’ll come up with the rebounds that OU won’t to get a second heartbreaking win in the series.

Kansas (21-3) vs. Oklahoma (16-8) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners have all of a sudden found a bit of a groove with three wins in the last four games.

This might be a spotty team offensively, but it’s fantastic on the defensive boards, and it doesn’t turn the ball over. Against a Kansas team that usually dominates the glass, is great near the rim, and can take games over with big runs, the Sooners have a nice style mix.

Throw in their ability to hold off on fouls and not give away a slew of free points, this could get interesting if they start hitting early from three.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas caught Oklahoma by 14 the first time around by owning the boards.

It was close early, but the Jayhawks were able to do everything right over the last 15 minutes as they clamped down and turned the game into blowout. The +14 rebounding margin helped that.

There hasn’t been much of a need for a slew of offensive rebounds lately – they’re hitting everything they need to from the field. This might not be a high-octane offensive powerhouse, but they dominate defensively on the inside, keep games at their own pace, and they’re averaging 49% from the field.

Oklahoma doesn’t shoot consistently well enough.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas will take a few big shots early before ramping up the defense in the second half – just like the first time around between the two.

Oklahoma won’t give the Jayhawks a whole slew of free and easy points, but it won’t be able to consistently keep up offensively for a full 40 minutes.
