College Football 2020: 5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky Big 12 college football predictions for the 2020 season.

5 (Potentially) Stupid Big 12 Predictions

As if everything we’re going through in the college football world – and in real life – isn’t stupid enough, let’s take it all down a few levels.

What if you were told last year at this time that Baylor was going to play for the Big 12 Championship?

What if you were told that Jalen Hurts would be one of the most efficient passers in the history of college football? What if you were told that eight of the ten teams – including Texas – would fail to hit the nine-win mark for the season?

[jwplayer 8TZC4fkD]

What if you were told last year at this time that Matt Rhule would have an NFL job – hardly a shocker – but Lincoln Riley was still going to be in Norman?

They’re the wild and wacky curveballs that make each season fun. Enough safe and sane, it’s time for dumb and dangerous with five (potentially) stupid predictions thrown at the wall to see if they stick.

To keep this fun, this entire Stick To Sports piece is in a safe, COVID-19-free bubble.

5. The Big 12 will lose two non-conference games

It’s going to take some work for the Big 12 to biff two or more of their Plus-1 games.

Each Big 12 team gets one non-conference tune-up game before diving into the nine-game conference run, and let’s just say no one is exactly pushing the envelope.

Let’s just give Texas Tech (Houston Baptist), West Virginia (Eastern Kentucky), TCU (Tennessee Tech), Texas (UTEP), and Oklahoma (Missouri State) the benefit of doubt and chalk up wins for all of them.

And that’s fine. With no preseason, all college teams are insane to not schedule a winnable game to work out all the kinks. Unless something crazier than even 2020 can throw at the Big 12, assume 5-0 out of that group.

And 3-2 from the other five.

2020 Big 12 Preseason Rankings

Tulsa has a potentially amazing offense that might come up with something special on the right day against Oklahoma State, but nah – the Cowboys will win that. However …

Be very, very careful of the opening of the Dave Aranda era at Baylor with a dangerous Louisiana Tech team coming into Waco.

Ha ha ha, Kansas gets Coastal Carolina to start. Yeah, the Chanticleers won 12-7 on its trip last year to Lawrence.

Arkansas State absolutely has the chops to pull off something fantastic in Manhattan against Kansas State, and watch out for a dangerous Louisiana team with the offense, coaching and firepower to upset Iowa State.

5. Big 12 2020 Preview

The Big 12 is used to this.

While the other four Power Five are adjusting to the idea of their expanded conference seasons, this is just another campaign for a Big 12 conference that always plays a nine-game league slate.

That doesn’t mean the conference shouldn’t expand to 12 teams and do this right, but that’s for another day.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

The unique aspect of the schedules will put the spotlight on the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC, but the Big 12 should have the most competitive fight from top-to-almost bottom.

A very good team is likely going to end up with three wins this year.

CFN Preview 2020: All 130 Team Previews

Last year, West Virginia, Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas all had three Big 12 wins or fewer, and all four came up with two non-conference wins each. The other six teams went 16-2 in non-conference play, with the only two misfires the 18-17 Iowa State loss to Iowa, and the Texas defeat to an LSU team that turned out to be okay.

This year, the conference teams won’t have the benefit of two of those non-conference dates, so 5-5 will be a great year for most.

Oklahoma is still the runaway star with the most talent, the most depth, and the right system to keep the run of five straight Big 12 championships going.

But it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

[lawrence-related id=516490]

Texas is more than good enough to pull off a win over the Sooners – either in the regular season or, potentially, in the Big 12 Championship – and Oklahoma State should be able to hang with anyone in America if that offense does what it’s supposed to.

Iowa State is too experienced and too good to be considered just a pesky annoyance, and Kansas State and TCU each have the upside to sneak into that No. 2 spot in the Big 12 Championship game if things get a bit muddled.

Baylor will take a step back, but it’s still a player, and West Virginia and Texas Tech are going to be far stronger – even if the records don’t necessarily show it.

And yeah, Kansas will pull off an upset somewhere. It’s going to take something quirky, but it’ll happen.

Take a potential blast of a conference schedule and throw in the most exciting brand of college football going, and it should be business as usual for the Big 12.

NEXT: Big 12 Teams That Will Surprise, Disappoint

Big 12 To Play 9 Plus 1 Model. The Likely Non-Conference Games Are …

The Big 12 has figured out what it’s going to do with its football season, adopting the 9+1 model. What should be the non-conference games?

The Big 12 has figured out what it’s going to do with its football season, adopting the 9+1 model. What should be the non-conference games?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

The Big 12 actually had to work on this one

The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 have all decided to run with a conference-only model without a non-conference opponent. That made sense considering there are more than enough teams in each of the leagues to easily fill out a ten-game schedule, and there wasn’t any reason to pay a team outside of the conference to play without the normal revenue coming in from fans in the stands.

[jwplayer tNsRFtZa]

Since the Big 12 only has ten teams, it had the choice of either 1) playing a nine-game model, 2) going to ten games with a double-up somewhere within the league, or do what they’re doing with this 9+1 version.

[vertical-gallery id=516460]

Like it was supposed to be when the season was normal, every Big 12 team was going to play every other Big 12 team for the nine-game schedule. Now each one has to fill out that one extra game to round out the slate.

Flexibility – like it is for the other conferences – is key. The Big 12 is planning on starting in mid-September, and will have its conference championship sometime in mid-December.

[lawrence-related id=517039]

So what will those non-conference games be?

With the Power Five leagues taking the conference-only route, we lose Texas vs. LSU, Iowa State vs. Iowa, Oklahoma vs. Tennessee, West Virginia vs. Florida State, and Kansas State vs. Vanderbilt, but here are the games currently on their slates from the Group of Five and FCS to choose from.

One note, these could all be ditched for other options. Each team would keep one of these, but some of the FCS programs have delayed or cancelled their seasons.

Baylor – Incarnate Word, Louisiana Tech
Iowa State – South Dakota, UNLV
Kansas – at Coastal Carolina, (New Hampshire game postponed)
Kansas State – Buffalo, North Dakota
Oklahoma – Missouri State, at Army
Oklahoma State –  Tulsa, Western Illinois
TCU – at SMU, (Prairie View A&M game postponed)
Texas – USF, UTEP
Texas Tech – at UTEP, (Alabama State game postponed)
West Virginia –  Eastern Kentucky, Maryland

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to end up. This is only based on how good we think the Big 12 teams are going into whatever the 2020 season is going to be.

CFN Preview 2020: All 130 Team Previews

10. Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … Les Miles has some skill guys to work around. Pooka Williams is one of the Big 12’s best running backs, the receiving corps should be the best the program has had in a while, and there’s still Les Miles – give him more time.

Be Concerned About … the quarterback who can get everyone the ball. Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick might be fine, but the real concern is on the other side with a defense that was the second-worst in the nation at taking the ball away and 122nd overall.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Jayhawks win four games. It might be a sad goal, but the bar isn’t set all that high for a program that hasn’t won more than three games since 2009.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

9. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Texas Tech CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the passing game that should have Alan Bowman back at quarterback for a longer period of time – at least that’s the hope. Injured too often so far in his short career, he’s back along with a great receiving corps to make the passing game rock.

Be Concerned About … the offensive line that was just okay throughout last year still isn’t going be anything amazing. There’s experience in the secondary, but the pass defense that finished 128th in the nation needs more out of the veteran corners.

The Season Will Be Successful If … it goes bowling. Injuries played a big role in last season’s 4-8 clunker, but the program has missed out on a bowl game in three of the last four years. That’s not okay.

8. West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the defensive line should be a killer. Dante and Darius Stills are killers up front, and there’s enough to like in the secondary – especially at safety – to give the Mountaineers one of the better defenses they’ve had in a long, long time.

Be Concerned About … an offense that didn’t work until it was way too late. The running game was non-existent, there weren’t enough big plays down the field, and the rebuilding year in Neal Brown’s first season turned out to be just that.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the O works. Brown is too good a head coach to have another clunker of a season, but this is West Virginia. It’s not supposed to be scoring just 247 points in a season – the lowest output since 2001. Set the bar at a bowl game and go from there.

[vertical-gallery id=516460]

7. Baylor Bears

Baylor CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … an offense with a whole lot of really, really good parts back. QB Charlie Brewer leads an attack that was third in the Big 12 last season and should be almost as good again. However …

Be Concerned About … a defense that loses almost everyone. That’s not quite fair – there are a whole lot of good parts to start with, and new head coach Dave Aranda is a star defensive mind who comes in from all the fun LSU just had, but there’s a lot of lost personnel.

The Season Will Be Successful If … it looks like the transition from Matt Rhule to Aranda is seamless. Baylor won’t play for the Big 12 title again – the defensive back seven will take a step back – but going to a bowl has to be a given.

6. Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … Kansas State being Kansas State. The defense will once again be good, the special teams are among the best in the nation, and it seems like Chris Klieman is the perfect fit to take over Bill Snyder’s program. Think of 2019 Kansas State, only better.

Be Concerned About … the lines that are fine, but are hardly filled with all-stars. There have to be more plays in the backfield, and a pass rush would be nice here and there. There’s work to do on the offensive front.

The Season Will Be Successful If … there’s a sneaky-close run to get into the Big 12 Championship. There’s too much missing to get there, but three of the five losses last season were by four points or fewer. Klieman doesn’t have the program that far away from big things.

CFN in 60 Video: Clemson Tigers Preview
[jwplayer NJ1kg6i1]

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Trevor Lawrence, Jr. Clemson
He was the No. 1, superstar, can’t-miss, this-is-the-franchise-guy-who-might-possibly-be-better-than-Deshuan-Watson recruit for the program in 2018, and in his time all he’s been able to do is lead the team to two ACC championships, two national title appearances, one national championship, and with a fairly decent 29-1 record in the 30 games he has been a part of.

And now, he’s embracing the role of college football legend, Face of the Franchise, and all-around leader to a grander scale both on and off the field. Thanks to the silly rules that make a player wait for three years after high school to be eligible for the NFL Draft, he’s still around for at least one more year.

Enjoy.

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Gregory Rousseau, Soph. Miami
It’s putting way too much unfair pressure on anyone to potentially be another Chase Young, but when it comes to next level pass rushers and college stars who can get into the backfield – and the ACC has a whole lot of them this year – you’re not crazy putting Rousseau into the conversation for a top three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Banged up as a freshman, he busted out last season with 54 tackles, with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss – by the way, Young finished with 46 sacks with 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss – as one of the nation’s top and steadiest producers. And now he has Temple transfer Quincy Roche on the other side to take the heat off.

2020 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

RB Chuba Hubbard, Jr. Oklahoma State
Texas QB Sam Ehlinger, Iowa State QB Brock Purdy, and maybe there’s a shot for Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler to rise up fast – this is a quarterback league and there are plenty of options to step up and be the star of the season.

But it’s Hubbard who should be the signature star for an Oklahoma State team that should be in for a massive season. The 6-1, 207-pound back has to hold up after handling the ball over 350 times last season, but he’s tough, fast, and he should get a whole lot more national exposure coming off a 2,094-yard, 21 touchdown campaign.

2020 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DT Darius Stills, Sr. West Virginia
Or Dante Stills. Flip a coin between the two Stills, and you might have the strongest defensive player in the Big 12. No matter what, West Virginia has a whale of an interior between these two.

The 6-3, 295-pound Dante came up with seven sacks with 11.5 tackles for loss, and Darius made 47 tackles with seven sacks and a team-high 15 tackles for loss. They’re both active, they’re both going to show off next-level skills and they’re both going to be in for big seasons.
