Why Oklahoma Will Win

It seems like it’s starting to kick in for Spencer Rattler.

It’s going to take a little while for the star prospect from last year to get every aspect of the Lincoln Riley offense down, but it’s almost like finding a way to get through the finish of Texas win might have been the spark.

He misfired on a few throws against TCU, but the explosion was there in the 33-14 win, averaging over 15 yards per pass with no picks and two touchdown passes.

Texas Tech’s pass defense is the worst in Big 12 so far. It has been hit for over 300 yards in each of the last two games and three times in the five games, and Rattler is about to make it three games in a row.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Is this a new Texas Tech?

Seriously, it beat West Virginia with just 169 passing yards?

A scoop-and-score from the defense helped, but the Red Raider offense was outgained by 90 yards overall and still mangled to pull it off.

New QB Henry Colombi has been a good mid-range passer – he hit 22-of-28 passes against WVU, but there weren’t many big plays – and connecting on 76% of throws is enough to help the team be the best in the Big 12 on third downs. This might not be the typical Texas Tech team, but if this all starts to work, it’s going to do a better job of controlling games.

What’s Going To Happen

Usually, Texas Tech would bring the firepower and the passing game to keep up with an improving but shaky Sooner team. The OU passing game is still efficient, and the defense has built on what it did last year and hasn’t the upside to be a whole lot better as the season goes on.

Oklahoma has won eight in a row in the series and will keep it all rolling as Rattler is going to look terrific against a defense that won’t get to him often enough.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Can you imagine what would’ve happened if Oklahoma had lost to Texas?

It seemed like it was ten years ago, but the win on October 10th was a game-changer for the Sooners. Had it gacked it away, this would’ve been a rough few weeks after the 1-3 start. Instead, it held on, got the win, and that might be the moment when this uber-talented team finally kicks it in.

For all of the problems the team has had, it’s still the Big 12 leader in passing, in passing efficiency, and best of all for this game, in time of possession.

TCU has done a great job of controlling the tempo and owning the clock. Neither one of those things will likely happen without the pass rush needed to get to Spencer Rattler on a consistent basis.

But …

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why TCU Will Win

TCU does control the clock.

The Oklahoma defense had problems over the first three games against anyone who can throw reasonably well, and now it has to deal with Max Duggan, who’s hitting 69% of his passes with 132 rushing yards in his three games.

TCU is just good enough on third downs to come through in big moments, and it’s decent and not giving the ball away. On the flip side, Rattler and the OU offense have had big problems in the clutch – they have a really, really hard time closing.

Oklahoma has turnover problems, and TCU doesn’t. If the Horned Frogs win the mistake battle and keep Rattler and the OU O on the sidelines, they might just have this.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which teams will show up? Will the TCU that was so good late in the win against Texas run on the field, or will it be the one that could never get control of the game in the loss to Kansas State?

Will the Oklahoma that was so confident and good for around 50 minutes in each of the three Big 12 games come to Fort Worth, or will it be the one that has a terrible case of the yips late in the games?

With two weeks off, give TCU head coach Gary Patterson a bit of a nod to have time to prepare, but expect the OU offense to come out hot and hold on.

Oklahoma (1-1) vs Iowa State (1-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma really was good against Kansas State. Now it has to clean things up.

Spencer Rattler and the passing game were terrific, the run defense held the Wildcats to just 66 yards, and the team gained 117 more yards, but being -4 in turnover margin was a killer along with the ten penalties. Tighten things up, and everything changes.

OU collapsed. It was up 35-14 before it all fell apart, but that’s part of the deal in this weird year. It was a straight up gack by the Sooners – it’s good enough to get it all back in a hurry and get even sharper as Rattler gets more time in the system.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Iowa State Will Win

Oklahoma doesn’t have a running game yet.

Rattler can run, but he’s not Jalen Hurts or Kyler Murray when he gets on the move – he finished with -5 yards – and the absence of the key backs from last year is a problem. Seth McGowan ran for 73 yards, but the offensive line that’s supposed to be terrific hasn’t been good enough.

Iowa State didn’t exactly get its groove back after the Louisiana loss, but the offense was balanced and effective enough to survive the 37-34 win over TCU.

Breece Hall ran for 155 yards and three scores, Brock Purdy was back on track with a solid day, and the passing game should work just fine against an OU secondary that was torched by Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson when the team was in comeback mode.

It’s been a shaky start, but there’s more than enough experience in place to pull this off.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been three years since the Cyclones pulled off the shocker against the Sooners, and they’re going to press hard at home.

Rattler might be brilliant, and he might have the upside to be the next great Oklahoma quarterback, but he’s got to prove he can shake off a bad fourth quarter against Kansas State, and he has to process things faster – that’s just a function of inexperience.

Iowa State got hit for 400 passing yards by TCU and survived. It’ll get hit by a huge day from Rattler and won’t be able to come through in the fourth quarter like Kansas State did.

Oklahoma (1-0) vs Kansas State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas State Will Win

A whole lot of parts to the Kansas State puzzle and style worked just fine against Arkansas State in the 35-31 loss, and it all needs to be perfect again.

The Wildcats committed too many penalties – sinning eight times – but it dominated the time of possession battle by almost nine minutes, was +2 in turnover margin, and it just needed one last stop.

The offense wasn’t sharp enough – and give credit to Arkansas State – but the team had several chances to put the game away, and couldn’t quite do it.

This is still a fantastic Wildcat team with the offense that could flip the switch and be a whole lot more efficient and effective after the rough opener. Defensively, it should be able to hold down an Oklahoma ground game that couldn’t get much moving against Missouri State, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Kansas State made the Arkansas State wide receivers look like future NFL stars, and now the secondary has to deal with the Oklahoma corps.

The Wildcats generated decent pressure, but they were still hammered for 330 passing yards and five touchdowns on big play after big play.

Enter Spencer Rattler and the Oklahoma passing game that got in its work against Missouri State with 31 first quarter points, four long touchdown passes and a ton of deep plays.

Oklahoma has the defensive front to keep Kansas State from establishing a steady running game and make Skylar Thompson become even more of a passer. He was fine against ASU, but the team isn’t built for a shootout. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Thompson was brilliant in last year’s 48-41 win over the Sooners, throwing for 213 yards and running for four scores in the upset.

Assume Oklahoma will be ready this time around.

Kansas State is a lot stronger than it looked against Arkansas State, but it’s going to struggle to keep up the pace when Rattler gets into a second half groove. The Wildcat pass rush will be good enough to give the new guy some problems, but the OU offense will be too strong as the game goes on.

Why Missouri State Will Win

Bobby Petrino – yeah, that Bobby Petrino – takes over a Missouri State team that could use a little tweaking after a 1-10 season. So what do the Bears have for Oklahoma to worry about?

The offensive line is experienced and has enough size to at least bring a little bit of a push, and the receiving tandem of Damoriea Vick and Lorenzo Thomas isn’t bad.

Oklahoma is breaking in a new starting quarterback, the running back situation is a massive question mark with a rotation of backs looking to get going after losing top backs Trey Sermon (Ohio State) and Kennedy Brooks (opting out). But …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This is about as much of a scrimmage as it gets as the Sooners give Spencer Rattler his shot to give the offense a run. There might be several question marks across OU, but the receiving corps is going to be a killer right away.

Yeah, not having the main running backs around will be a problem at some point, and the lines aren’t going to be smooth early on, but this is the tune-up. Missouri State is breaking in several key parts, too, and even with Petrino taking over there won’t be a whole lot of offensive efficiency.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma will be able to call its shot. Rattler will put up almost flawless numbers, all the running backs will take turns ripping off big runs, and this will be over within the first few minutes.
