Jags Week 13 inactives: Starting CB Sidney Jones to miss his third game

The Jags will be without their best cornerback as they take on the Vikings Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed six players to their inactives list for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The group included three of the five players who were ruled out Friday in cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles), and linebackers Dakota Allen (hamstring) and Kamalei Correa (hamstring).

As for the others, quarterback Jake Luton, tight end Tyler Davis, and defensive end Reggie Gilbert were also listed

Of the names on the list, Jones is the biggest as he’s their best cornerback. Sunday’s game will be the third he’s missed for the Jags and his presence has clearly been missed when looking at the Jags’ struggles to stop their opponents top receivers. It’s also hurt them as far as turnovers goes because he leads the team in picks with two and has also caused a forced fumble.

Taking his place in the lineup will likely be rookie Luq Barcoo, who flashed last week against Cleveland. It was his second game as an active player and he finished it with four tackles, one of which was for a loss.

As for the Vikings, tight end Irv Smith Jr. was amongst their notables to be listed on the inactives list.

Jags final Week 13 injury report: D.J. Chark set to return vs. Vikings

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled five players out and three as questionable on their final injury report for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. Of the players ruled out, two were starters on defense in nose tackle DaVon Hamilton (knee) and cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles).

Hamilton, who injured his knee Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, was expected to be ruled out despite his injury not being as severe as it initially looked. He could be placed on injured reserve soon and it wouldn’t be shocking if it happened Saturday as the team could swap him out for nose tackle Abry Jones who is awaiting activation.

Jones, on the other hand, looked like he had a chance to play Sunday after being limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday. However, he was downgraded Friday and was listed as a non-participant. With him out, the Jags could start Tre Herndon and rookie Luq Barcoo on the perimeter as they did last week.

Linebackers Dakota Allen (hamstring) and Kamalei Correa (hamstring), and tight end Ben Ellefson were the other three players ruled out.

Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) and starting safety Jarrod Wilson (shoulder) were two of the three ruled questionable alongside veteran receiver Chris Conley (hip). All three were limited Friday so a decision will be made on them Saturday when the team travels.

If Taylor can’t play, Will Richardson will get the nod at right tackle, while Andrew Wingard would likely be called on to start for Wilson. The Jags have options they could activate from their practice squad to make up for the loss of Conley like Terry Godwin and Josh Hammond.

The biggest takeaway from the final injury report was that receiver D.J. Chark Jr was left off of it. That means he’s set to return after missing Week 12’s game, which is a huge plus for veteran quarterback Mike Glennon.

Thursday injury report: Jags upgrade 3 to full participation

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t have many upgrades to their injury report Thursday as most of their key players remained limited. However, running back Dare Ogunbowale (hand) and safety Brandon Rusnak (ribs/quad) were the two notables to move from limited participation to full participation.

Everyone else who saw a change in status either had a scheduled day off or returned from one, including tight end Tyler Eifert, who was a full participant.

The notables who were limited on offense included receivers D.J. Chark and Chris Conley and starting right tackle, Jawaan Taylor. The statuses of both Chark and Conley are interesting because both missed Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns as quarterback Mike Glennon got his first start with the Jags. With Glennon remaining the starter for the second straight week, having Chark and Conley could be huge and their two consecutive days of limited practices could mean they will return this Sunday against Minnesota.

On defense, the notable player to surface with an injury-related status was cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles), who was also limited for his second consecutive day. He’s missed the Jags’ last two games with his injury and hadn’t been practicing in the process. However, he returned to the field Wednesday as a limited participant and could finally be left off the final report or at the least surface as questionable.

Another notable defender who was on Thursday’s report was defensive tackle Davon Hamilton (knee), who received good news this week after being carted out of Week 12’s game against the Browns. According to coach Doug Marrone, Hamilton’s injury isn’t long-term, but he could end up going on injured reserve as he recovers.

Jags safety Josh Jones designated to return from injured reserve

The Jags could be getting some help from their battered secondary as safety Josh Jones was designated to return from IR this week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars secondary is a bit banged up at the moment and could use some help. Luckily, that may be on the way as former starting safety Josh Jones (chest) was designated to return off injured reserve Wednesday.

With Jones now being cleared, the Jags have 20 days to activate him to the active roster. When looking at the state of the secondary, that could happen before Sunday’s trip to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Vikings.

Jones was placed on IR last month on Nov. 14 before the Jags’ game against the Green Bay Packers. Prior to going on IR, he had started in eight games for the Jags, accumulating 61 total tackles in the process, 42 of which were solo tackles.

Jones’ opportunity to return to the active roster comes as one of the Jags’ standout rookies Daniel Thomas went on IR on Nov. 25 and Jarrod Wilson surfaced on this week’s injury report (was limited) with a shoulder injury. That said, if Wilson is able to suit up, the Jags could roll with him while the other safety position could come down to Jones and Andrew Wingard.

DT DaVon Hamilton’s knee injury isn’t as severe as initially believed

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton received good news Monday as his knee injury isn’t a long-term one. The news comes after he exited Week 12’s game late and had to be carted off the field as a result.

Hamilton dodging a major injury is fantastic news as he’s been having a great season. He graded as the Jags’ top player Weeks 8-9 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans with an 86.6 and an 87.9 Pro Football Focus grade, respectively, in those weeks. Statistically, he exited Week 12 with 30 total tackles (14 solo tackles) and a sack.

With the Jags out of playoff contention, there is no need for the Jags to rush Hamilton back. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising for the team to place him on injured reserve as they did Allen, and maybe even keep him out for the remainder of the season if needed.

With Hamilton potentially out for multiple weeks, it appears veteran Abry Jones could be activated from injured reserve in the near future as the Jags have a rough patch coming up on their schedule. They will have to deal with the likes of the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Indianapolis Colts to name a few, all of whom have respectable rushing attacks.

Injury news: DT Davon Hamilton carted off late in Jags’ loss to Browns

The Jags had another worrisome injury to happen on defense as Davon Hamilton was carted off with a knee injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into Week 12’s game against the Cleveland Browns with several injuries shaping the roster and it appears they have one more to worry about after Sunday’s loss. Rookie nose tackle DaVon Hamilton had to be carted off late in the game with a knee injury, which ruled out any possible return against the Browns.

Hamilton was having a promising rookie season for the Jags after taking over as their No. 1 nose tackle when Abry Jones went on injured reserve. He graded as the Jags’ top player Weeks 8-9 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans, garnering an 86.6 and an 87.9 Pro Football Focus grade, respectively, in those weeks.

Only time will tell the severity of Hamilton’s situation and we won’t speculate, but Jags coach Doug Marrone stated that his injury didn’t look good from his perspective after the game. If he’s eventually deemed out for the season, it would be terrible news for the rookie who was putting together a great year despite just registering one tackle Sunday.

The Jags already came into Sunday’s game without several key defensive players, however, with them being eliminated from playoff contention there should be no rush to get anyone back. Another positive is the fact that several young players could get some late season opportunities as we saw with corners Josiah Scott and Luq Barcoo, both of whom have been inactive much (or all) of 2020.

The Jacksonville Jaguars activated several players from their practice squad Saturday as they are in the process of preparing for the Cleveland Browns.

With several injuries at receiver and cornerback, in particular, the team elected to promote both receiver Trey Quinn and cornerback Josh Nurse through standard practice squad elevation. They also promoted kicker Aldrick Rosas and running back Craig Reynolds, too.

Quinn’s promotion comes after receivers D.J. Chark (ribs) and Chris Conley (hip) were ruled out on Friday’s final injury report. Chark was a non-participant all week while Conley practiced on Thursday (on a limited basis) only.

With Quinn’s addition and the return of receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring), the Jags will have four receivers active on their roster Sunday when adding in Keelan Cole Sr. and Collin Johnson. Quinn will also be the Jags’ second-most experienced active receiver Sunday and will come into the game with eight career starts of 15 total games played. Those games all came in 2018-19 with the Washington Football Team, where he was able to garner 35 receptions for 273 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

As for Nurse, Sunday’s game will be the second he’s participated in since entering the league this year. He also was active for the Jags’ Week 9 game against the Houston Texans where he took part in 30% of the special teams snaps.

Rosas’ activation is a result of kicker Chase McLaughlin being placed on the Reserve/ COVID-19 list earlier this week. It will mark his second game starting with the Jags and he’ll enter Sunday’s game with an 82.5% career field goal percentage (66-of-80).

Lastly, Reynolds’ addition comes after running back Dare Ogunbowale was ruled questionable Friday with a hand injury. After entering the league in 2019, he participated in three games with the Washington Football Team, but only took the field for 7% of their special teams reps during his stint.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ luck continued to dwindle in terms of health as another starter was placed on injured reserve. This time it was guard Andrew Norwell who had been dealing with a forearm injury that caused him to be ruled out early in the week for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Norwell suffered the injury last Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers and exited the game early. Veteran Tyler Shatley replaced him in the process and could be the one to do so Sunday, too. Rookie Ben Bartch also could get the nod in Norwell’s spot.

Norwell’s addition to IR is just one of many that occurred to a starter or notable player on the Jags’ roster over the past two weeks. Last week, they had to place rookie cornerback C.J. Henderson on IR, and this week, they had to place nickelback D.J. Hayden, defensive end Josh Allen, and safety Daniel Thomas on the list, too.

Norwell’s absence will be a huge one as he’s been the Jags’ second-best offensive lineman alongside Brandon Linder. He had a Pro Football Focus grade of 71.1 heading into Week 11’s game against the Steelers and an 85.6 pass-blocking grade. That especially could prove to be an issue in the passing game as the Jags will have a new quarterback under center in Mike Glennon.

Jags Week 12 injury report: CB Sidney Jones, WR D.J. Chark amongst notables ruled out vs. Browns

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled four players out for Week 12’s game against the Cleveland Browns, many of which were starters. On offense the starting players ruled out were receiver D.J. Chark (ribs) and guard Andrew Norwell (forearm). Receiver Chris Conley (hip) will also be joining them after not practicing Friday.

On defense, starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) was the lone player ruled out, leaving Tre Herndon as the Jags’ lone starter at the position.

Chark, Norwell, and Conley surfaced on the injury report after last Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Norwell was expected to miss Week 12’s game as Doug Marrone informed the media that the veteran’s injury would take some time to recover from earlier in the week. Tyler Shatley or rookie Ben Bartch will replace him in the lineup after both registering starts already this season.

Jones’ injury leaves the Jags in a tough predicament because they just placed cornerbacks C.J. Henderson, D.J. Hayden, and Chris Claybrooks on injured reserve. As a result, they are in a situation where they may have to start rookies Luq Barcoo and Josiah Scott Sunday against the Browns. It would mark the first starts for both players, unless the Jags go with veteran Greg Mabin, who was picked up off waivers this week.

The Jags also had two players surface as questionable on the final injury report in running back Dare Ogunbowale (hand) and quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb). Minshew will likely be inactive Sunday as he continues to recover from his injury.

As for the other changes on the injury report, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) and safety Jarrod Wilson (shoulder) were upgraded to full participation while Aaron Lynch (shoulder) was limited as a late addition.

Shenault’s status in particular is huge news as he’s missed the Jags’ last two games. With Conley and Chark out, he will see ample opportunities on the perimeter and has a chance to turn in a strong game when considering the status of Browns cornerback Denzel Ward (calf strain), who was ruled out this week.

Jags place cornerback Chris Claybrooks on injured reserve

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they would be placing rookie cornerback Chris Claybrooks on injured reserve Thursday, leaving a lot of uncertainty at the cornerback position. He now joins starting cornerback C.J. Henderson and nickleback D.J. Hayden, both of whom were place on IR last week and this week, respectively.

With C.J. Henderson out, Claybrooks started in the Jags’ last game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also sustained a groin injury in the process of the game, but registered 10 total tackles with eight being solo tackles.

All of the Jags’ injuries have left the Jags with just Tre Herndon as their lone corner who has started in a Jags uniform. Also on the roster are rookie corners Josiah Scott and Luq Barcoo, who are likely to see a lot of action Sunday. Scott is a player that many deemed a solid fit as a cornerback in the draft, so he could replace Hayden. That would leave Barcoo to start on the outside.

The Jags also picked up former Tennessee Titans cornerback Greg Mabin off the waiver wire, who has been in the league since 2017. However, he has just one start to his name, which means the Jags might prefer him as a special teams option for the moment.
