Panthers sign S Sheldrick Redwine to practice squad

The Panthers signed S Sheldrick Redwine on Thursday, adding another DB and one of the fanciest names in the league to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers apparently prefer red to white. (Wait, are there even any players with the surname “Whitewine” for us to make that assumption?)

Anyway, Darin Gantt of Panthers.com reported on early Thursday evening that the team signed safety Sheldrick Redwine to their practice squad. This comes just hours after Carolina elevated fellow safety Kenny Robinson up to the active roster amidst their punter shuffle.

Redwine cracked into the NFL as a fourth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns back in 2019. The University of Miami (Fla.) product spent a pair of seasons there, totaling eight starts over 27 games. He recorded 75 tackles, an interception and three pass deflections.

Cleveland waived Redwine on Aug. 31, giving way to a path for a new home with the New York Jets just a week later. He had played in a pair of New York’s outings in 2021, including the season opener in Carolina.

In the corresponding move to accommodate Redwine, the team released safety Doug Middleton, who was brought in on Wednesday.

Panthers sign safety to replace J.T. Ibe, release FB Mason Stokke

Today, Carolina has brought in another safety to fill Ibe’s former spot.

The Panthers lost a few players at yesterday’s practice. Running back Darius Clark left on a cart, wide receiver Keith Kirkwood got a concussion and safety J.T. Ibe was waived for giving it to him.

Today, Carolina has brought in another safety to fill Ibe’s former spot: Doug Middleton has signed with the team. Middleton played his college ball at Appalachian State, then went undrafted and signed with the Jets. He spent three years there plus some time with the Titans, Jaguars and Dolphins.

The Panthers also announced that they have waived rookie fullback Mason Stokke. His reps will likely got to Mikey Daniel, who has previously played fullback for the Falcons.

LB Joe Giles-Harris among 4 released by Jags

The Jags had to get their roster back to the offseason minimum after the draft and decided to release four players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started Tuesday off with some post-draft transactions, releasing linebackers Joe Giles-Harris and Nate Evans, and defensive backs Nate Meadors and Doug Middleton. The moves come as the Jags added nine draft selections and some undrafted free agents, but needed to get their roster back to the minimum number of players allowed on an offseason roster (90).

Of the group, Middleton was the most experienced and 2020 marked his fifth season. He initially joined the Jags (for a second stint after being with them in 2019) through their practice squad in September. He ultimately played in 10 games for the team and was able to garner nine total tackles.

Giles-Harris was probably the most significant contributor as he made strides in 2020. He started in three games for the Jags in 2020 and was able to accumulate 20 total tackles. Giles-Harris also was able to register a Pro Football Focus grade of 75.6, which was the highest on the team though he only took 205 defensive snaps. That said, his release could be a simple case of the Jags moving to a new defensive system.

Meadors, who was a second-year player and Evans, who was an undrafted rookie last season, didn’t get to take any snaps with the team. They both were on the Jags’ practice squad last season though Meadors was activated against the Minnesota Vikings.

Jags Week 12 injury report: CB Sidney Jones, WR D.J. Chark amongst notables ruled out vs. Browns

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled four players out for Week 12’s game against the Cleveland Browns, many of which were starters. On offense the starting players ruled out were receiver D.J. Chark (ribs) and guard Andrew Norwell (forearm). Receiver …

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled four players out for Week 12’s game against the Cleveland Browns, many of which were starters. On offense the starting players ruled out were receiver D.J. Chark (ribs) and guard Andrew Norwell (forearm). Receiver Chris Conley (hip) will also be joining them after not practicing Friday.

On defense, starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) was the lone player ruled out, leaving Tre Herndon as the Jags’ lone starter at the position.

Chark, Norwell, and Conley surfaced on the injury report after last Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Norwell was expected to miss Week 12’s game as Doug Marrone informed the media that the veteran’s injury would take some time to recover from earlier in the week. Tyler Shatley or rookie Ben Bartch will replace him in the lineup after both registering starts already this season.

Jones’ injury leaves the Jags in a tough predicament because they just placed cornerbacks C.J. Henderson, D.J. Hayden, and Chris Claybrooks on injured reserve. As a result, they are in a situation where they may have to start rookies Luq Barcoo and Josiah Scott Sunday against the Browns. It would mark the first starts for both players, unless the Jags go with veteran Greg Mabin, who was picked up off waivers this week.

The Jags also had two players surface as questionable on the final injury report in running back Dare Ogunbowale (hand) and quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb). Minshew will likely be inactive Sunday as he continues to recover from his injury.

As for the other changes on the injury report, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) and safety Jarrod Wilson (shoulder) were upgraded to full participation while Aaron Lynch (shoulder) was limited as a late addition.

Shenault’s status in particular is huge news as he’s missed the Jags’ last two games. With Conley and Chark out, he will see ample opportunities on the perimeter and has a chance to turn in a strong game when considering the status of Browns cornerback Denzel Ward (calf strain), who was ruled out this week.

Jags make several roster transactions before Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jags made several elevations from their practice squad in preparation for the Green Bay Packers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a wide variety of roster transactions Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. That included the elevation of four players from their practice squad.

With linebacker Dakota Allen and receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. being ruled out on the final injury report, the Jags utilized their two standard elevation spots on Joe Giles-Harris and Terry Godwin.

Giles-Harris has spent most of his Jags tenure on their practice squad after joining them last season as an undrafted free agent. In 2019, he was activated for five games, registering a bulk of his snaps on special teams. He also was active for the Jags’ last game against the Houston Texans where he registered more snaps on special teams.

As for Godwin, this will be his first activation from the practice squad since joining the Jags last season.

The Jaguars also decided to activate offensive lineman KC McDermott and safety Doug Middleton from their practice squad.

Sunday’s game will mark McDermott’s third time on the active roster as he participated in the Jags’ games against the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals. He registered a few special teams snaps in the process but didn’t see the field for any offensive plays.

Middleton, on the other hand, will be participating in his fourth game of the season after playing in the Jags’ games against the Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans (Week 9).

Lastly, the Jags activated safety Andrew Wingard from injured reserve and kicker Chase McLaughlin from the commissioner’s permission list.

Wingard’s addition isn’t a surprise after he was designated to return from IR earlier in the week. He started in three games this season for the Jags before going on IR before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions and will return with 25 tackles and a pick to his name.

As for McLaughlin, he was signed to the roster earlier in the week to replace Josh Lambo, who is out for the season with a gluteus medius injury. McLaughlin, a second-year player, will come into his tenure with the Jags with a 78.3% field goal conversion rate (18-of-23) and a 100% extra point attempt rate (26-of-26). He previously spent time on the active rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers.

Jags make roster transactions on defense in preparation for Texans

the Jags elevated a few practice squad players from defense before their Week 9 game against the Houston Texans.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made several roster transactions on defense by elevating multiple players from their practice squad for Week 9’s game against the Houston Texans. They utilized their two standard elevation spots to bring up linebacker Joe Giles-Harris and cornerback Josh Nurse.

The Jags also promoted safety Doug Middleton to the active roster and placed rookie linebacker Shaquille Quarterman (knee) on injured reserve.

Giles-Harris joined the Jags last season as an undrafted free agent out of Duke. He participated in five games in 2019 as a rookie and was able to garner three tackles on the season. Giles-Harris’ promotion not only comes after Quarterman was sent to injured reserve, but also after linebacker Dakota Allen (ankle) was ruled out Friday on the final injury report.

Nurse’s elevation could be due to Sidney Jones’ situation. While he wasn’t on the final injury report, he was limited all week with a rib injury. If the injury hinders him, it appears Nurse will be on standby to provide depth at cornerback.

Middleton’s elevation comes after the Jags had two safeties surface o the injury report in starter Jarrod Wilson and Brandon Watson. Wilson was limited all week with a hamstring injury although he wasn’t listed on the final report while Watson was limited on Thursday and full on Friday with the same type of injury.

Lastly, Quarterman was healthy all week but surfaced on the final injury report. He didn’t participate in Friday’s practice as a result and it appears the staff believes he’ll need some time to recover.

Jaguars elevate 2 from practice squad, activate RB Devine Ozigbo

Jags RB Devine Ozigbo has finally been activated and will get to take the field Week 7 against the Chargers.

As they typically have this season, the Jacksonville Jaguars made a few Saturday roster transactions to add some final touches to their team for Week 7’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

They announced that they used two standard elevation spots from their practice squad to temporarily promote safety Doug Middleton and tight end Eric Saubert to the active roster. The transactions come after the Jags ruled veteran safety Jarrod Wilson (hamstring) and tight end Tyler Eifert (neck) out on Friday’s injury report.

Sunday’s game won’t be the first time Middleton has been activated for the Jags this season. They also had to activate him for Week 4’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team released him after the game and picked him back up on practice squad the following Monday.

Middleton has also spent time with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans and will enter Week 7 with four starts and 35 tackles.

Saubert joined the Jags’ practice squad in September. He was a fifth-round pick for the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 and also spent time with the New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. He’ll enter Sunday’s game with seven receptions for 69 receiving yards.

The Jags also activated running back Devine Ozigbo after he was designated to return from injured reserve a week ago. He was placed on the Jags injured reserve list before Week 1’s game with a hamstring injury. Ozigbo was expected to share the workload with James Robinson this season after a solid training camp performance and will now get a chance to be worked into the offensive mix.

To make room for Ozigbo’s transaction, the Jags placed veteran running back Chris Thompson on their Reserve/ COVID-19 list. He was mostly used for third-down situations and left the active roster with 16 receptions for 111 receiving yards and a touchdown. As a rusher, he was also able to garner five carries for 17 yards, but has yet to get his first rushing touchdown with the team.

Jags re-sign safety Doug Middleton to practice squad

The Jags are bringing back Doug Middleton to their practice squad after activating him for Week 4’s game against the Bengals.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made one transaction Monday, signing safety Doug Middleton to their practice squad. The move came after the Jags temporarily promoted Middleton to their active roster on Saturday for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, according to the league’s transaction log, the Jags released him, which allowed them to pick him back up for their practice quad.

Middleton, 27, entered the league as an undrafted player for the New York Jets in 2016. He was there until 2019 and was picked up by the Miami Dolphins temporarily. The Jags signed him afterward in November of 2019 and activated him to their active roster in mid-December. They later released him in August of this year and he spent a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans  before returning to the Jags in September.

Middleton has participated in a total of 15 career games while starting in four (all of which were with the Jets). He’s also managed to garner 35 career tackles and four career pass breakups and will be one of the more experienced players on the Jags’ practice squad.

Titans agree to terms with Doug Middleton, waive Avery Gennesy

The Titans have added a DB to their roster.

The Tennessee Titans announced a pair of roster moves on Wednesday afternoon.

Tennessee has added defensive back Doug Middleton, while also waiving guard Avery Gennesy.

Middleton was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State by the New York Jets in 2016 and spent his first three seasons in the NFL with them.

The 26-year-old played for both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins in 2019.

Middleton won’t have much time to get acclimated with final cuts set to take place on Saturday, but it is worth noting that multiple members of Tennessee’s secondary have missed consecutive practices of late.

The Titans signed Gennesy, who played in the XFL last season, as potential offensive line depth earlier in the offseason.

Clearly it didn’t work out, which gives the rest of the offensive linemen on the roster vying for one of the final spots on the 53-man roster a boosted chance to make the cut.
