Packers host workout for 2016 second-round pick Kamalei Correa

The Packers worked out linebacker Kamalei Correa, a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers worked out a second-round pick from the 2016 NFL draft. The team reported a workout for linebacker Kamalei Correa on Tuesday, per the league’s transaction wire.

The Baltimore Ravens took Correa with the 42nd overall pick in 2016. He’s played 63 NFL games, tallying 84 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 11 tackles for losses and 13 quarterback hits. Over the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Correa delivered all 8.5 of his sacks, including a career-high 5.0 in 2019.

The 6-3, 241-pound linebacker has been traded twice since entering the NFL.  He played 25 games with Baltimore over two seasons but was traded to the Titans for a sixth-round pick in August of 2018. Last October, he was dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a seventh-round pick.

This past summer, he spent around a month with the Kansas City Chiefs but was cut.

The workout might be nothing more than the Packers updating information on a player that is familiar to both the front office and coaching staff. Not only was he drafted by the Ravens, who employed director of football operations Milt Hendrickson for 14 years (2005-18), but he played in Tennessee while the Titans had Matt LaFleur as offensive coordinator.

Correa played in only nine games during the 2020 season. He missed time on the COVID-19 reserve list while in Tennessee, and he left the team and was put on the exempt list after being traded to the Jaguars.

Correa’s best season at Pro Football Focus was in 2019. He delivered 14 pressures, 15 stops and received elite grades in coverage.

Kamalei Correa could be first Chiefs player to make use of new jersey rules

It looks like Kamalei Correa will take advantage of the new jersey rules with the Chiefs.

One of the newest players for the Kansas City Chiefs could be the first to take advantage of the NFL’s new rules on jersey numbers.

The Chiefs made their signing of free-agent LB Kamalei Correa official on Thursday, welcoming the five-year NFL veteran to the team. The team did list him as a linebacker in the announcement of the signing and that distinction is important for a few reasons.

First, of course, is the role that he’ll be playing in Kansas City. The Chiefs clearly view him as a SAM linebacker prospect rather than a defensive end. The second is because of the jersey numbers that linebackers are now permitted to wear.

Correa is represented by DEC Management’s David Canter, who tweeted out this photo once he signed with the team:

Now, this could just be a simple jersey swap graphic and Correa could be wearing a different number in Kansas City. It could just as easily actually be the jersey number that he intends to wear with the Chiefs.

Under the NFL’s new rules, linebackers can now wear single-digit numbers. No player in Kansas City is currently wearing the No. 8 jersey. It was most recently worn by QB Matt Moore, who currently remains a free agent. It doesn’t look like he’ll be back with the team either, with the five quarterbacks currently on the roster.

Correa has a history with the No. 8 jersey number as he wore it back in college with the Boise State Broncos. If that doesn’t happen to be the number that he wears in Kansas City, it’s worth noting that Correa also wore the No. 92 jersey back in high school. He wore the No. 40 and No. 44 with the Titans. He also wore the No. 55 with the Jaguars in 2020.

Report: Chiefs to sign former Jaguars DE/LB Kamalei Correa

A new report says the Chiefs have added the five-year veteran.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another free agent, this time an intriguing veteran option along the defensive front seven.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have signed former Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Kamalei Correa.

The 27-year-old was a second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2016 NFL draft via Boise State. He didn’t see much action with the Ravens and was traded to the Tennessee Titans back in 2018. There he played 3-4 OLB and recorded 77 tackles and 8.5 sacks, which was the most productive period of his NFL career.

Correa fell out of favor with the team during the 2020 season and was traded to the Jaguars. Jacksonville ultimately released Correa after he left the team during the season for personal reasons.

This is an interesting signing for the Chiefs because he’s a bit of a tweener in terms of his size. He’s listed at 6-3 and 241 pounds, which is a little bit light for your traditional defensive end in the Steve Spagnuolo scheme. Correa is also a little bit too big to play off-ball linebacker in the scheme. He’ll most likely play defensive end, but he could be in line for some play as a rush linebacker. The team did this with former Chargers OLB Jeremiah Attaochu in 2019.

The Chiefs had already hit the 90-man roster limit, so in order to accommodate Correa, they’ll need to release a player to make room.

Should Titans reunite with Kamalei Correa after release from Jaguars?

Correa played in six games for the Jags in 2020.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released former Tennessee Titans outside linebacker, Kamalei Correa, per the league’s transactions wire on Thursday.

Along with a seventh-round pick, Correa was traded from the Titans to the Jags last season for a sixth-round pick after the veteran requested to be dealt because of his limited role in Tennessee’s defense.

Little did Correa know that had he just stuck it out with the Titans, he would have had played significant snaps thanks to the team’s issues at the position stemming from injury and ineffectiveness.

In his six games with Jacksonville, Correa didn’t do much, which basically made the trade a steal for the Titans. He totaled seven combined tackles, one pass defensed and zero sacks while playing just 14 percent of snaps.

So, with the Titans in the market for at least one outside linebacker this offseason, could we see a reunion with Correa in Nashville?

It’s certainly possible, however Correa is likely seeking a situation in which he can play significant snaps, and the Titans may not have anything more than a depth role for him once again in 2021 if they land the impact pass rusher at outside linebacker that the team desperately needs.

While Correa has flashed as a starter with the Titans before after totaling six sacks in his last eight games of the 2019 campaign (including playoffs) and has proven to be an asset against the run, he wouldn’t be the kind of impact addition the Titans desperately need at the position.

If Correa is willing to sign on as a depth piece once again, Tennessee should absolutely bring him back. Depending on him to be anything more than that would be a huge mistake on general manager Jon Robinson’s part.

Jags rule Brandon Linder out vs. Titans, 4 others ruled questionable

The Jags will have to take on the Titans without one of their team captains Sunday, as he was the only player ruled out so far.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without at least one starter this Sunday as center Brandon Linder was ruled out on Week 14’s final injury report. The decision came after the veteran sustained an ankle injury against the Minnesota Vikings that sidelined him during practice this week.

With Linder out, Tyler Shatley will get to start in the veteran’s place. With him being inserted into the lineup once again, Sunday’s game will mark Shatley’s seventh start of 2020.

The Jags also ruled four players questionable for Sunday’s meeting against the Tennessee Titans. Those players were tight end Tyler Eifert (shoulder), linebacker Kamalei Correa (hamstring), and cornerbacks Greg Mabin (hamstring) and Sidney Jones IV (Achilles).

Of the four, the most significant absences could be those of Jones and Correa as they are starters. Jones has missed the Jags’ last three games with his injury, which has been a huge blow to the Jags’ already wounded secondary. As their best cornerback, his addition would be huge for the Jags as they take on the receiver tandem of A.J. Brown and Corey Davis Sunday.

If Jones can’t go, they could stick with the pairing of Tre Herndon and Luq Barcoo on the outside.

Correa’s return would be huge, too, as he’s a former Titan who knows their personnel well. Since making a trade for him in October, Correa has started in six games for the Jags, dating back to Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

Jaguars Wednesday injury report: Center Brandon Linder sits out of practice

OL Brandon Linder missed Wednesday’s practice for the Jags as he continues to recover from the ankle injury he sustained against Minnesota.

The Jacksonville Jaguars only had two players to sit out of Wednesday’s practice, both of which were on offense in tight end Tyler Eifert (shoulder/ day off) and center Brandon Linder (ankle). The other seven players who were listed all practiced on a limited basis.

Linder was expected to miss Wednesday’s practice as coach Doug Marrone revealed the news earlier in the day. His absence comes after he exited Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings early with the ankle injury he’s listed for.

When looking at those who were limited, there were several notable names in the group. On offense, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (thumb) and running back James Robinson (knee) were the biggest names. Like Linder, Shenault exited Sunday’s with his injury but Doug Marrone revealed that his X-Ray came back negative on Monday.

On defense, cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) continued to be limited. He had the same status for most of last week’s practices aside from Friday (didn’t participate) and was ruled out for Week 13’s game against the Vikings. Hopefully, this week will lead to his return as the Jags could use some experience in their secondary.

Lastly, linebackers Dakota Allen (hamstring) and Kamalei Correa (hamstring) made progress from last week as neither participated leading up to Week 13’s game. With both starting the week limited, there is a chance they both could be back Sunday, giving the linebacking corps back one of its starters and reserves.

Jags Week 13 inactives: Starting CB Sidney Jones to miss his third game

The Jags will be without their best cornerback as they take on the Vikings Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed six players to their inactives list for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The group included three of the five players who were ruled out Friday in cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles), and linebackers Dakota Allen (hamstring) and Kamalei Correa (hamstring).

As for the others, quarterback Jake Luton, tight end Tyler Davis, and defensive end Reggie Gilbert were also listed

Of the names on the list, Jones is the biggest as he’s their best cornerback. Sunday’s game will be the third he’s missed for the Jags and his presence has clearly been missed when looking at the Jags’ struggles to stop their opponents top receivers. It’s also hurt them as far as turnovers goes because he leads the team in picks with two and has also caused a forced fumble.

Taking his place in the lineup will likely be rookie Luq Barcoo, who flashed last week against Cleveland. It was his second game as an active player and he finished it with four tackles, one of which was for a loss.

As for the Vikings, tight end Irv Smith Jr. was amongst their notables to be listed on the inactives list.

Jaguars release LB Cassius Marsh

The Jaguars got their roster back to 53 players after releasing Cassius Marsh for their new addition of Kamalei Correa (via trade).

With the addition of linebacker Kamalei Correa via trade, the Jacksonville Jaguars had to free up a roster spot. They did so Thursday by releasing veteran linebacker Cassius Marsh, who signed with the team this spring via free-agency.

Marsh, 28, appeared in four games for the Jags and started in one with SAM linebacker Leon Jacobs going on injured reserve for a torn ACL. During his tenure with the Jags, he was able to garner nine combined tackles and a quarterback hit. However, he wasn’t really able to make a big impact as the Jags were hoping for and will leave the team with a Pro Football Focus grade of 42.2 on the year.

Marsh’s release is a sign the Jags are likely to utilize Correa at SAM linebacker, but time will tell if that’s the case. They acquired Correa in a rare in-division transaction after he asked the staff to be traded/ released because of his lack of snaps. To make the transaction happen, the Jags and his former team in the Tennessee Titans swapped late round selections in 2021, with the Jags sending a six-round selection to them for their seventh-rounder.

Correa Will enter his tenure with the Jags with 57 career appearances and 13 starts. Throughout those games, he’s been able to garner 77 tackles (11 of which were for loss), 8.5 sacks, a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Titans trade OLB Kamalei Correa to Jaguars

Correa will remain in the AFC South.

Outside linebacker Kamalei Correa has apparently gotten his wish after requesting a trade from the Tennessee Titans, as he has been dealt to the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to multiple reports.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the Titans and Jags will also swap late-round picks, although it isn’t clear exactly which picks those will be yet.

Correa was arguably the team’s best pass-rusher in the latter half of the 2019 campaign, as he posted six sacks in the Titans’ last eight games (including playoffs).

However, Correa has seen the field sparingly in 2020, even with the Titans short-handed at outside linebacker. The 26-year-old veteran has played just 39 snaps in the three games that he’s suited up, and he was inactive for the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills.

Tennessee originally acquired Correa from the Baltimore Ravens back in 2018 for a sixth-round pick. He signed a one-year, $2.25 million deal with the Titans during the offseason.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel confirms Kamalei Correa’s request for trade

Kamalei Correa’s days in Nashville are numbered.

On Wednesday morning, reports surfaced that Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Kamalei Correa had requested a trade — and now that has been confirmed by head coach Mike Vrabel.

Correa was arguably the Titans’ best pass-rusher late in 2019, as he compiled six sacks in the team’s final eight games (including playoffs).

However, he has played sparingly so far this season even with the Titans being short-handed at the position, with just 39 snaps played in the three games he has suited up.

Correa was inactive for the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills just hours after he was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

When speaking to the media on Wednesday afternoon, Vrabel admitted that the two sides were going to move on, and that Correa would be released if the Titans couldn’t find a suitor.

Correa signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Titans during the offseason. He was originally acquired by Tennessee from the Baltimore Ravens back in 2018 for a sixth-round pick.

With Correa all but certain to be out of the mix, fellow outside linebacker Derick Roberson will have a to be active on a weekly basis — that is, if the Titans aren’t content with carrying three outside linebackers into every game.
