Former Jaguars DT Abry Jones retires

Jones retires after playing every snap of his NFL career with the Jags.

It appears longtime Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Abry Jones won’t be suiting up for the rival Tennessee Titans, after all. He was placed on the reserve/retired list on Saturday, seemingly indicating that his professional career has come to an end.

The 29-year-old played every snap of his career as a member of the Jaguars since the team signed him as an undrafted free agent back in 2013. The former Georgia Bulldog appeared in 105 games for the Jags, starting 52 of them.

He finishes his NFL career with 196 total tackles (18 for loss), 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He also hit the opposing quarterback 15 times and had 12 passes defensed.

Jones was placed on the injured reserve after five games last season, and though he was designated to return and began practicing with the team, he was never activated. He didn’t re-sign with the Jags after the season, instead opting to sign a deal with the Titans.

He was expected to be a significant role-player (and even potential starter) for Tennessee this year, so with his decision to hang up the cleats, the team will have to look elsewhere for defensive line help.

Tennessee Titans DT Abry Jones placed on reserve/retired list

Jones was placed on the reserve/retired list on Saturday.

Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Abry Jones was placed on the reserve/retired list on Saturday, which comes not long after the team signed him in early June.

Jones was not re-signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, which led to him making the trip to Tennessee. He spent eight seasons in Jacksonville, making him the longest-tenured player as he left the team in 2020.

Jones isn’t the only player to recently retire in Tennessee. Cornerback Kevin Johnson retired just a day after Jones signed with the Titans.

Jones played in 105 games for the Jags, starting 52 of them. He recorded 196 combined tackles (129 solo), with 18 tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hits, 12 passes defended, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

He only saw action in five games last season after suffering an ankle injury that saw him placed on Injured Reserve.

Jones was expected to make a push for a starting gig within the Titans defensive line, and it will be interesting to see how things shake out with the unit moving forward this year.

Jags Week 12 injury report: CB Sidney Jones, WR D.J. Chark amongst notables ruled out vs. Browns

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled four players out for Week 12’s game against the Cleveland Browns, many of which were starters. On offense the starting players ruled out were receiver D.J. Chark (ribs) and guard Andrew Norwell (forearm). Receiver Chris Conley (hip) will also be joining them after not practicing Friday.

On defense, starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) was the lone player ruled out, leaving Tre Herndon as the Jags’ lone starter at the position.

Chark, Norwell, and Conley surfaced on the injury report after last Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Norwell was expected to miss Week 12’s game as Doug Marrone informed the media that the veteran’s injury would take some time to recover from earlier in the week. Tyler Shatley or rookie Ben Bartch will replace him in the lineup after both registering starts already this season.

Jones’ injury leaves the Jags in a tough predicament because they just placed cornerbacks C.J. Henderson, D.J. Hayden, and Chris Claybrooks on injured reserve. As a result, they are in a situation where they may have to start rookies Luq Barcoo and Josiah Scott Sunday against the Browns. It would mark the first starts for both players, unless the Jags go with veteran Greg Mabin, who was picked up off waivers this week.

The Jags also had two players surface as questionable on the final injury report in running back Dare Ogunbowale (hand) and quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb). Minshew will likely be inactive Sunday as he continues to recover from his injury.

As for the other changes on the injury report, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) and safety Jarrod Wilson (shoulder) were upgraded to full participation while Aaron Lynch (shoulder) was limited as a late addition.

Shenault’s status in particular is huge news as he’s missed the Jags’ last two games. With Conley and Chark out, he will see ample opportunities on the perimeter and has a chance to turn in a strong game when considering the status of Browns cornerback Denzel Ward (calf strain), who was ruled out this week.

Jags designate LB Shaq Quarterman, DT Abry Jones to return from injured reserve

The Jags could have their most experienced defensive lineman back from injury soon in DT Abry Jones.

While they are dealing with several defensive injuries that occurred against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jacksonville Jaguars could be on their way to getting back two players who could make an impact. On Wednesday, the team announced that defensive tackle Abry Jones (ankle) and linebacker Shaq Quarterman (knee) were designated to return from injured reserve.

With the Jags limping into Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns and being without a few defensive coaches, any help is welcomed at this point. The Jags now have 21 days to activate both or either player to the active roster.

Jones, who is the Jaguars’ most experienced lineman, went on IR on Oct. 22 before the Jags’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He had started in the five games prior and accumulated eight total tackles, four of which were solo.

Quarterman went on IR on Nov. 7 before the Jags’ second game against the Houston Texans. He didn’t see the field for any snaps on defense but participated in 45% of the Jags’ special teams snaps up until Week 5.

First-round rookie Davon Hamilton took over as starter for Jones and the Jags might elect to keep it that way so the veteran can ease his way back into things. As for Quarterman, his return will more so help the special teams unit, though he could see snaps on defense if the Jags keep enduring injuries.

Jags final injury report for Week 7: LB Myles Jack, safety Jarrod Wilson among players ruled out

The Jags will be without several starters, including LB Myles Jack.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled three players out for their Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Two of those players were starters in linebacker Myles Jack (ankle) and safety Jarrod Wilson (hamstring).

The other player who was ruled out was tight end Tyler Eifert (neck).

Both Jack and Wilson sustained their respective injuries last Sunday against the Detroit Lions, causing them to exit the game early. Replacing Jack was linebacker Dakota Allen while Brandon Watson was the player who replaced Wilson. Allen and Watson could also start against the Chargers, too, who could be a handful for the defense due to Justin Herbert having a hot hand.

The only other player to surface on the injury report was starting right guard A.J. Cann, who also exited Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. He was replaced by rookie Ben Bartch, who also was on the injury report earlier in the week with a knee and foot injury. With Bartch cleared to go, he’ll be the player to start in Cann’s place if the veteran is unable to play.

Jags activate PK Josh Lambo alongside other roster transactions

Jags kicker Josh Lambo is officially back from injured reserve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury report was one with many names on it, but one player who seemingly has been cleared to return is placekicker Josh Lambo. After being designated to return from injured reserve (with a left hip injury) earlier in the week, the team officially activated him Thursday.

Lambo’s return is a huge one for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled since his absence which dates back to after Week 2’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Jags went through four kickers while Lambo recovered due to injuries or struggles on the field in Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas, Stephen Hauschka, and Jon Brown.

Of course, with Brown being the Jags’ active kicker Week 6, he was released upon Lambo’s return. Defensive end Josh Mauro was released, too, after spending time on the commissioner’s exempt list. The veteran was placed on the list after serving a five-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs and also had to be placed on the Jags’ Reserve/ COVID-19 list this past weekend.

Mauro’s release made room for the Jags to promote undrafted rookie tight end, Ben Ellefson, from their practice squad to their main roster. Ellefson’s promotion is likely a result of the Jags’ injury situation at tight end as veteran Tyler Eifert didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday with a neck injury.

Ellefson was able to gain some experience earlier this season, participating in the Jags’ Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts and Week 2’s game against the Titans. While he didn’t register any catches in those games, Week 2’s game marked a start for him and he was able to register 30 snaps when combining his snaps from both games.

Lastly, the Jags placed veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The decision came after he didn’t participate in practice Thursday with the injury. As a result of Thursday’s transaction, Jones won’t be eligible to return until three more games, which means he’ll have to sit out of their games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers.

Jaguars injury report for Thursday: Tyler Eifert, A.J. Cann downgraded from limited to DNP

Two key members for the Jags’ offense were downgraded on Thursday’s injury report, leaving their status for the final report in the dark.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t have many big changes on their injury report Thursday for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. However, the two most noteworthy ones were mostly on offense.

Starting guard A.J. Cann (shoulder) and No. 2 tight end Tyler Eifert (neck), were both downgraded from limited on Wednesday to non-participation on Thursday. It appears the Jags specifically could be gearing to go into Sunday’s game without Eifert after promoting rookie tight end Ben Ellefson from their practice squad. If Eifert can’t go, that would mean the Jags would have three tight ends available in Ellefson, Tyler Davis and veteran James O’Shaughnessy.

As for Cann, it looks like Friday will be an important day for him as well as the No. 2 guard behind him, Ben Bartch (foot, knee), who was on the report as a limited participant for the second-consecutive day.

There were several other key names to remain limited with Bartch who will be worth watching for on the final injury report. Those players were receivers DJ Chark Jr. (ankle) and Laviska Shenault (hamstring), defensive end Josh Allen (knee), linebacker Dakota Allen (foot), and guard Andrew Norwell (ankle).

Kicker Josh Lambo was also amongst the notables who were limited, but he’s set to make a return after being moved to the active roster Thursday. The team also released kicker Jon Brown, which pretty much solidified the veteran’s return.

Veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones (ankle) was placed on IR after being downgraded to non-participation Thursday. Fellow starter Myles Jack (ankle) also didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice, too, marking his second day of missing practice. In all probability that means he’s trending towards sitting Sunday’s game out, which means Dakota Allen would get the nod to start for him again if he’s not in the status column of the final report.

As for Jones, rookie DaVon Hamilton could get to start in his place for the second straight week.

Josh Allen, D.J. Chark among 5 players ruled questionable vs. Lions

The Jags could be without their WR1 this Sunday against the Lions, which would help Detroit’s No. 11 ranked passing defense in a big way.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled five players as questionable for their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions and starting receiver D.J. Chark, defensive end Josh Allen and defensive tackle Abry Jones were among them.

The team also listed tight end Tyler Eifert, and linebacker Dakota Allen as questionable, too.

Chark, who didn’t participate in practice on Wednesday and Thursday with an ankle injury was limited Friday, which made the Jags’ staff confident enough to deem him as a game-time decision. His injury is one that occurred last Sunday in the Jags’ game against the Houston Texans as he was seen limping to the sideline late in the fourth quarter. He didn’t return for the remainder of the game which the Jags lost by a score of 30-14.

If Chark can’t go, Keelan Cole could be listed as the Jags’ starter alongside veteran Chris Conley. Rookies Laviska Shenault Jr. and Collin Johnson would also see an increase in snaps, too.

The absences of Josh Allen and Jones would be a huge blow to the Jags’ defense similar to Chark because it would put the Jags in a scenario where they would be without half of their starting defensive line. If Allen can’t suit up, it would also mark the second consecutive game that he’s missed and rookie K’Lavon Chaisson would earn his second career start. Fellow rookie, Davon Hamilton, could also get his first career start in Jones’ place.

On the positive side, starting linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback CJ Henderson didn’t surface in the status column, so the Jags will at least have them returning to the lineup after missing Week 5.

Veteran DT Abry Jones discusses being the leader of Jaguars’ DL group

Abry Jones will not only be the longest-tenured Jaguar in 2020, but he will also be viewed as the leader of the team’s young DL group.

There may not be a group on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster that looks as drastically different as the defensive line, which parted ways with some key veterans like Calais Campbell and Marcell Dareus before the draft. The coronavirus pandemic also put them in a bit of a pickle as Lerentee McCray and Al Woods decided to opt-out with concerns for their health.

However, one player who has survived the Jags’ purging of veterans is Abry Jones, who is the team’s longest-tenured veteran. Jones will be entering his eighth season with the Jags after the team brought him in as an undrafted free-agent in 2013.

In a session with the media Thursday, Jones discussed what it was like to have such an important title for the organization, adding that he was excited to work with the Jags’ young players:

“I see it as, I came in the league with dreams and goals and I feel like I’ve been accomplishing a lot of those and trying to be a true professional to keep continuing my job,” Jones said. “A lot of young guys come in and I like to talk to the undrafted free agents to let them know that there’s a place for you in this league if you just keep working. I’m just excited to keep this thing going on and keep having that title about myself.”

Jones, who has a total of 47 career starts with the Jags, could very well be starting again as the team’s oldest defensive lineman. Additionally, he’ll be tasked with helping Taven Bryan and Dawuane Smoot take another step, helping/ competing with rookie DaVon Hamilton in his rookie transition, and all the other roles that Campbell and Dareus took on as leaders.

As is the case for all teams, the Jags’ defensive line will be crucial to the team’s success and Jones is going to have to be a key part of the equation. In the early stages of camp, it appears he’s ready for the task in what will be a huge year for him and the Jags.
