South Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panther offensive line is strong enough to be good from the start.

South Carolina’s defensive front might be good, but the Georgia State running game is going to be dangerous, the rotation of backs will be solid, and the receiving corps is among the best in the Sun Belt.

The Gamecocks need their pass rush to step up. They were great in the bowl game, but they struggled to get behind the line over the second half of the season. If they can’t get to Georgia State QB Darren Grainger, look out.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why South Carolina Will Win

Can the Georgia State defense get off the field?

It was okay last season, but there isn’t a ton of bulk up front. The D is once again going to rely on big plays and takeaways to get the job done. Now the Panthers have to deal with an upgraded Gamecock passing game with a fantastic receiving corps for new QB Spencer Rattler to throw to.

South Carolina fans will be looking for explosion out of the upgraded attack, but as long as Rattler is his accurate self, and if the offense is moving on third downs, everything else should work. The Georgia State secondary isn’t good enough to take over if Rattler gets into a groove.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Ask Auburn fans how dangerous Georgia State can be.

The Tigers ended up winning 34-24, but it was a lot closer than that with the Panthers coming way too close to being able pull off the giant road shocker early last year.

Don’t be freaked out if this isn’t a South Carolina annihilation. Georgia State is very good, it’s not going to be fazed by the SEC setting, and the Gamecock offense might not be razor-sharp out of the box. However, the USC lines will take over, the defense will settle in, and Rattler will be great in the second half.

It’ll take a bit, but South Carolina will eventually pull away.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022

Georgia State lost the first two games to North Carolina and Army by a combined score of 102-27, and dropped the date to Appalachian State a few weeks later 45-16 for a 1-4 start.

Even with the schedule lightening up … a 7-1 run with a win at Coastal Carolina, a victory over Georgia Southern, and a 51-20 blowout bowl win over Ball State?

That’s how you turn a season and a program around.

Three straight winning seasons, three straight bowl games, four bowl appearances in five years – it’s been a good run for Georgia State as it grows into more and more of a factor in the Sun Belt.

Even with all of the changes and the new programs coming in, the potential is there for this to be the best season yet since becoming a full-on FCS team back in 2013.

Head coach Shawn Elliott has settled in, the team is loaded with good veterans and playmakers, and with the momentum of the second half of last season, this is when it’s fun to be a Georgia State fan.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t always perfect, and it loaded up on a whole slew of mediocre teams, but it got the job done. The running game was fantastic, the passing attack was more effective than the stats, and the parts are there to be far more consistent and far better because …

This might not be the best offensive line in the Sun Belt, but it’s going to be very, very good. Malik Sumter was a Second Team All-Sun Belt center, Pat Bartlett was a Third Team All-Sun Belt guard, and almost everyone else is back with only former star guard Shamarious Gilmore done.

The veteran backs will thrive. Tucker Gregg is a reliable 220-pound occasional workhorse who averaged close to five yards per carry on his 953 yards, fellow senior Jamyest Williams is a quick back who transferred over from South Carolina and ran for 6.7 yards per carry with nine scores, and the rushing production will come from …

Darren Grainger. The 6-4, 202-pound senior wasn’t always accurate, but he threw just four picks with 19 touchdown passes.

Slippery-fast, he took off for 646 yards and three scores – he gave Auburn a hard time and was almost perfect in the bowl win over Ball State. Now he has to be more consistent as a passer. UConn transfer Steven Krajewski is a nice backup option.

The receiving corps is loaded. San Pinckney transferred to Coastal Carolina, but Jamari Thrash led the team with 32 grabs averaging over 14 yards per catch.

TE Aubrey Payne led the team with seven touchdown catches, Ja’Cyais Credle is a 6-4 deep threat, and there are a slew of young options in the mix.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense has to be better on third downs, the secondary has to be stronger, and it has to rise up against the good offenses on the slate, but the pass rush should once again be terrific, there’s a slew of potential all-star talent, and as long as the takeaways are coming, all should be okay.

The pass rush and big plays come from the linebackers. Jamil Muhammad wasn’t always a starter, but he led the team with six sacks from his set on the outside. The inside combination of Blake Carroll and Jordan Veneziale are tough – they combined for 186 tackles as the team’s top two hitters.

The line isn’t massive, but there’s a good rotation. Again, most of the pass rush comes from the linebackers, but as long as the three in the 3-4 can hold up, and if Thomas Gore can keep getting behind the line from his spot on the nose, this group will do its job.

Safety Antavious Lane has been one of the best defensive backs in the Sun Belt over the last few years, and the corners can tackle.

Sun Belt spring football rankings and predictions with best and worst case scenarios for every team

Sun Belt college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

22 College Football Thoughts For 2022
22. College football is changing, and it’s okay
21, Texas & Oklahoma, you really want the SEC?
20. SEC is really, really good if you like it or not
19. James Madison, welcome to the show

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

Georgia State vs Louisiana Game Preview, Sun Belt Conference Championship

Why Georgia State Will Win

Georgia State won the first two meetings over the Ragin’ Cajuns even though the defense struggled a wee bit.

On a run of eight straight wins, they’ve found a groove even though the shooting hasn’t been great, the three pointers aren’t there, and there’s no consistency.

So what’s going so right? Offensive rebounds. The Panthers might not be able to shoot, but they make up for it by coming up with a bazillion second chance points.

They don’t turn the ball over, they attack the rim, and the defense keeps scores low. However …

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana is red hot.

It lost 65-58 at Georgia State a few weeks ago, but that’s the only blip in a 6-1 run, including a nice win over Troy to get here.

It’s one of the few teams in the Sun Belt that can hang with Georgia State on the glass. It won the rebounding margin in both games with a slew of offensive rebounds of its own.

The defense is terrific – it’s more than happy to play a low scoring battle – and the offense is great on the free throw line when it needs to be, but …

Georgia State vs Louisiana: What’s Going To Happen

The Ragin’ Cajuns turn it over way too much.

In a game that’s likely going to be plays in the 60s – at most – the little mistakes will matter. Louisiana turned it over 33 times in the two losses to Georgia State, and once again, that’s going to be just enough to be the difference.

Georgia State vs Ball State TaxAct Camellia Bowl Preview

There are few more even-looking bowl games of the season – it should make for an entertaining, competitive battle if everything goes according to form.

Ball State struggled late in the season with three losses in the last five games, but it’s got a good offensive line, the defense takes the ball away, and it doesn’t beat itself with a whole lot of big mistakes.

Georgia State ripped through the second half of the year with six wins in the last seven games, and like Ball State it’s got a great offensive line, is great at forcing turnovers, and it doesn’t beat itself with a whole lot of big mistakes.

The Panthers don’t control the clock for all that long, but it’s able to make the most of its possessions with their quick style – and its defense’s inability to come up with enough third down stops. It’s the exact same thing for the Cardinals.

The main difference is with the rushing offense. Georgia State’s attack averaged 225 yards per game with consistent production after the first two games of the season. On the other side, Ball State needs to generate its own breaks and has to win the turnover margin to win.

Georgia State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

Troy will be playing to extend its season.

Georgia State already has bowl eligibility wrapped up. Troy lost its last two games – it happened to play the two best teams in the Sun Belt, Louisiana and Appalachian State – and it lost three of its last four games.

The Troy pass rush continues to be great, the defense has the ability to take the ball away in bunches – five takeaways in the last two games – and the offensive side has the ability to crank up the passing game.

Georgia State’s secondary gives up over 200 yards for breakfast – it allowed 230 passing yards or more in each of the last eight games.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Georgia State Will Win

Troy is going through a wee bit of a transition.

The team is still in the hunt for a bowl game, it happened to lose to the two stars of the Sun Belt – and to Coastal Carolina within the last month – and head coach Chip Lindsey was sacked.

Georgia State is playing well. It pushed Louisiana in a tough 21-17 loss, and that’s the only loss in the last six games with a strong win at Coastal Carolina right after.

The running game has been fantastic – averaging 222 yards per game – and it should do something new and control the game. The Panthers are normally awful in the time of possession battle, but that’s not a problem against a Troy team that keeps the ball for just over 27 minutes a game.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State is playing too well.

Troy might be more emotional and more desperate, but it’s not going to matter with the Georgia State offense getting its running game going and the defensive front allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards.

It’ll be a good battle, but Georgia State will be come up with two late scoring drives to get by in the home finale.
