Georgia State Panthers: Key To The 2022 Offense

Just a little more consistency to the passing game would be nice.

Georgia State is going to run the ball. The line is too good, the backfield too strong, and the offense should work too well to not average well over 200 yards per game on the ground. The passing attack has to at least hold serve.

The O improved once QB Darren Grainger settled in, but the offense still failed to go over 60% passing in nine of the 13 games and the downfield plays were sporadic. Go from 58% to 65ish%, and look out.

Georgia State Panthers: Key To The 2022 Defense

A few more third down stops would be nice.

It didn’t really make a whole lot of sense. The pass rush was good, the linebackers were all over the place, and the takeaways were there from the secondary. However, the Georgia State defense gave up too many first downs and had way too many problems on third downs.

For the third time in four years, Georgia State allowed teams to convert 44% or more of their third down chances. The Panthers were 6-0 last year – and have won their last 11 games – when offenses were under 45%.

Georgia State Panthers: Key Player To The 2022 Season

DT Thomas Gore, Jr.
He was a good part of the rotation in 2020, and he showed off his quickness and ability in the backfield in an Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt 2021 with six sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Versatile, the 6-0, 270-pounder was able to move around a bit on the three man line.

This year, though, he might have to be a bigger factor as an anchor. No one wants to stop him from getting behind the line, but the more he can hold up on the nose – or the more 290-pound Akeem Smith can do – the more the rest of the line should shine.

Georgia State Panthers: Key Transfer

QB Steven Krajewski, Jr.
This is almost by default – at least for the moment. Georgia State didn’t do a whole lot in the transfer portal because it didn’t need to. However, the quarterback situation has been strengthened – Darren Grainger is the No. 1 – with Krajewski, a 6-4 veteran who threw for 1,520 yards and ten touchdowns with 12 picks for UConn. He can run a little bit, too.

Georgia State Key Game To The 2022 Season

Coastal Carolina, Sept. 22
Coastal Carolina was on a run of 20 wins in 21 regular season games and was deep in the hunt for a second straight Sun Belt title when Georgia State came to town in mid-November. In a 42-40 thriller, the Panthers pulled off one of its biggest wins ever.

That was great, now do it again.

It’s the Sun Belt opener for Georgia State, and with a few rough road games in conference play to deal with – Appalachian State, Marshall, Southern Miss – taking care of home is a must. Win, and the tone will be set.
