What we learned from the Rams’ Week 12 loss to the 49ers

A look back at the Rams’ loss as they come to town in Week 13.

The Los Angeles Rams suffered a surprising and disappointing loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The lost 23-20 on a last-second field goal by Robbie Gould to drop to 7-4.

They come to town to take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. What happened to the Rams in Week 12?

Cardinals-Rams game in Week 13 closed to the public

An increase in cases of the coronavirus in Arizona means only family of the team will be able to attend.

As the 2020 NFL season has progressed, the Arizona Cardinals have been able to increase the number of spectators allowed to attend. For their Week 13 home game at State Farm Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams, that changes.

The team announced Friday that, based on information and guidance from Arizona Department of Health Services, the general public will not be allowed to attend the game. Tickets will not go on sale.

There will be a limited number of spectators in attendance but they will be only family members of Cardinals players and staff.

The team has not made a decision yet on their final two home games of the season in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles and Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Studs and duds in Cardinals’ 31-24 loss to the Rams

Check out who impressed and who didn’t quite go as well as hoped.

The Arizona Cardinals lost to the Los Angeles Rams in their season finale, snapping their modest two-game winning streak. It extended their losing streak to the Rams to six games, although they played much better overall than in the previous five.

Who were the players to stand out and the players to disappoint in the loss?

Stud: TE Dan Arnold

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Arnold had a big game, making fans think that maybe he is a good answer at tight end. He had four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. He looks promising, at least.

Chandler Jones misses out on sack record, 20-sack milestone, sack title

The Rams made sure he didn’t get any sacks by double- and triple-teaming him the entire game in Week 17.

Arizona Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones had a chance to make history on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. He entered the game with the league lead in sacks with 19. He had a chance to get to 20 sacks, something that has only every happened 12 times before, and an outside shot at the all-time season sack record.

The Rams had a different idea.

They consistently double- and tripled-teamed Jones or used running backs and tight ends to chip him, forcing other players to have to make plays.

The result?

Jones was held without a sack. In the last four games, the Rams have held him to only half a sack.

Jones still made an impact with a pair of tipped passes, a QB hit, two tackles and one for loss.

But he missed out on every notable achievement.

He did not get the sack record. He didn’t get to 20 sacks. And because Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaq Barrett had three sacks in Week 17, Jones doesn’t even get the 2019 sack title. Barrett finished with 19.5 sacks, giving him the league lead, with Jones finishing second.

Jones still tied for the league lead with eight forced fumbles and set the team season sack record, breaking the previous record of 17 he set in 2017.

He still had a fantastic season and is deserving of the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honors, but because the Rams paid so much attention to him, he missed out on an even more special season.

What we learned in Cardinals’ 31-24 loss to the Rams

There was a lot of good and plenty of bad, but the Cardinals played much better than in previous games against the Rams.

The Arizona Cardinals played much better than in any of their previous five games against the Los Angeles Rams but the result was the same. They lost 31-24 to the Rams, ending their season 5-10-1.

Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes and Kyler Murray turned the ball over four times.

What did we learn in the game?

Murray was good to go

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

After being questionable with a hamstring injury, Murray was good to go and started. He did not try any scrambles and used a warmer to keep the hamstring from tightening up but he both played well and made mistakes. He had 325 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He came out late in the game for a few plays after he was knocked down by Clay Matthews.

See who will not dress for the Rams in their season finale against the Cardinals.

The Los Angeles Rams released their inactive list for Week 17 and will be shorthanded in the secondary. They will be without their two starting cornerbacks against the Arizona Cardinals. Jalen Ramsey and Troy Hill both will not dress. Ramsey has a knee injury and Hill has a thumb injury that kept him out of last week’s game as well.

Here is the full list of inactives for the Rams.

  • CB Jalen Ramsey
  • CB Troy Hill
  • OL Rob Havenstein
  • TE Kendall Blanton
  • LB Obo Okoronkwo
  • DB Jack Gervase
  • OL Jamil Demby

Havenstein is healthy but has been replaced in the starting lineup by Bobby Evans.

With Ramsey and Hill out, Nickell Robey-Coleman and Darious Williams will likely start.
