Cardinals have changed QB meeting room to better follow COVID protocols

They don’t want to find themselves in a situation like the Denver Broncos last week.

After the Denver Broncos had to play a game over the weekend without a true quarterback because all of theirs had to go on the COVID-19 reserve, it is a question being asked of other coaches and teams. What are they doing now to avoid having what happened to Denver happen to their team?

The Arizona Cardinals have made one small change.

They are not isolating them from each other, but they have separated them a little more.

“We moved meeting rooms to where we have a much bigger space, and so we have all three guys, but it’s basically the team room where we watch the quarterback film now,” he explained to media members when he spoke to them Wednesday afternoon.

But they are not doing anything drastic. They are simply following league protocols.

“We do everything we can to follow the protocols as closely as possible, and our quarterbacks are very aware, particularly with the recent events, that we’ve got to do things right and abide by everything that is laid out for us,” he said. “And they do a great job of that, so we like the plan we have in place. They’ve handled it very well, and we’ll keep moving forward with it.”

It is important to remember that what happened to the Broncos was completely avoidable. The other quarterbacks in the room were not following protocol and were not wearing masks and were in close proximity.

The Broncos turned to Kendall Hinton, a practice squad receiver who played quarterback in college.

Who is the Cardinals’ emergency quarterback, should Kyler Murray, Chris Streveler and Brett Hundley all become unavailable?

Kingsbury would not say, though they do have plans.

“There are a number of contingency plans as far as the emergency goes. I’m not going to get into specifics on that, but we would cross that bridge when we got there and have a good answer, as good of an answer as you can have,” he said.

If they follow protocols, the Cardinals will never have to cross that bridge. But it is good to know they have taken extra measures to protect the most important position in football.

Only 4 Rams players listed on 1st injury report of the week

The Los Angeles Rams began their week of practice on Wednesday preparing for their Week 13 game on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. They released their first injury report of the week and it was short.

Only four players were listed and one player — defensive tackle Aaron Donald — wasn’t injured. He simply had the day off.

That is it for the Rams.

Did not participate:

  • DT Aaron Donald (rest)
  • LB Terrell Lewis (knee)

Limited participation:

  • OL Brian Allen (knee)
  • DL Sebastian Joseph-Day (hip)

Kyler Murray, Dan Arnold limited for Cardinals in 1st practice of the week

Four players sat out and six were limited for Arizona on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals began their week of practice to prepare for their divisional battle against the Los Angeles Rams and released their first injury report of the week. Four players were non-participants and another six were limited, including quarterback Kyler Murray.

Murray continues to deal with the shoulder injury he suffered two games ago against the Seattle Seahawks.

Among those who did not practice were three players who were hurt. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins had the day off, while safety Jalen Thompson (ankle), guard Justin Pugh (ankle) and safety Charles Washington (groin) sat out with injuries.

Washington has dealt with the groin injury for a couple of weeks but was able to play on Sunday. Thompson missed Sunday’s game and Pugh missed a few snaps early in the game on Sunday but finished the game.

Murray’s shoulder did not keep him out of Sunday’s game and won’t likely keep him from playing this week. Limited reps early in the week is simply precautionary. He will likely be a full participant by the end of the week.

Defensive lineman Zach Allen (ankle), defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence (calf) (reactivated from injured reserve on Wednesday), tight end Dan Arnold (knee), cornerback Johnathan Joseph (knee, ankle) and linebacker Tanner Vallejo (concussion) rounded out those who got limited reps.

Offensive lineman Justin Murray, who was inactive on Sunday with a hand injury, was a full participant and might fill in for Pugh at left guard.

Did not participate:

  • WR DeAndre Hopkins (rest)
  • G Justin Pugh (ankle)
  • S Jalen Thompson (ankle)
  • S Charles Washington (groin)

Limited participation:

  • QB Kyler Murray (shoulder)
  • DL Zach Allen (ankle)
  • TE Dan Arnold (knee)
  • DL Rashard Lawrence (calf)
  • CB Johnathan Joseph (knee, ankle)
  • LB Tanner Vallejo (concussion)

Full participation:

  • OL Justin Murray (hand)

Cardinals activate Trent Sherfield from COVID list, make other roster moves

Evan Baylis returns to the practice squad and two players on IR can return to practice.

The Arizona Cardinals, who had their first practice of the week to prepare for the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, announced a number of roster moves Wednesday.

They get back one player from the COVID list, a couple of players getting close to returning from injured reserve and a practice squad signing.

TE Seth DeValve, WR A.J. Richardson among 4 protected practice squad players in Week 13

They appear on the protected list for the first time this season.

The Arizona Cardinals are preparing to play the Los Angeles Rams this weekend at State Farm Stadium and have made their practice squad protections. They have protected four players from being poached by another team, and two are new to the list.

According to the NFL transaction report on Tuesday, the Cardinals protected the following players:

  • TE Seth DeValve
  • DL Michael Dogbe
  • RB D.J. Foster
  • WR A.J. Richardson

It is the first time either DeValve or Richardson have been on the protected list this season for the Cardinals.

DeValve is a new addition to the team, signing with the practice squad last week. The last two games, Evan Baylis has been signed to the roster from the practice squad. He was cut on Monday. If he is re-signed, it still looks like DeValve will be the player to get elevated and be their third tight end this weekend.

Richardson has been with the team on the practice squad since last season. With Larry Fitzgerald and Trent Sherfield both currently on the COVID list, protecting him gives them another option to elevate if neither player returns to the roster this week.

Dogbe and Foster have been elevated and protected multiple times.

Cardinals still holding on to final wild-card berth in NFC playoff race

They didn’t lose ground in Week 12 but have a very important game this weekend against the L.A. Rams.

The Arizona Cardinals have lost two games in a row and three of four but still remain in the playoff race at 6-5. After 11 games, they are in the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoffs.

Here is what the standings look like after 12 weeks.

  1. New Orleans Saints, 9-2
  2. Seattle Seahawks, 8-3
  3. Green Bay Packers, 8-3
  4. New York Giants, 4-7
  5. Los Angeles Rams, 7-4
  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7-5
  7. Arizona Cardinals, 6-5

Three teams behind the Cardinals are 5-6 — the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.

Luckily for the Cardinals, they did not lose ground in the wild card race. While they lost to the Patriots, the Rams, Bucs and Bears all lost, too.

What is coming in Week 13 for these teams?

The Bears and Vikings both have a good chance to winning and evening their record at 6-6. The Bears host the 4-7 Detroit Lions who just fired MattPatricia as head coach. The Vikings play the 1-10 Jacksonville Jaguars at home.

The Saints travel to play the Atlanta Falcons. Without Drew Brees at quarterback, Atlanta might win that game.

The Seahawks are at home against the Giants. The Packers play the Philadelphia Eagles at home, while the Cardinals and Rams face each other at State Farm Stadium.

The 49ers will play the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills. It is technically a home game, but it is being played at the Cardinals’ stadium because they are unable to play in their own because of restrictions put in place in Santa Clara.

Rookie DL Rashard Lawrence activated from injured reserve

He had been on IR since October 17. In five games this season, he has three total tackles and two hurries as a rookie.

The Arizona Cardinals announced an addition to the active roster on Tuesday. Defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence, who had previously been designated to return from injured reserve, was reinstated to the 53-man roster.

Lawrence was originally placed on IR on October 17 after suffering a calf injury. He was designated for return on November 11.

It was a move the team had to make or he would revert to IR for the rest of the season.

He apparently had a setback in practice after getting designated for return. He was seen during the open part of practice for a couple of days and then not after that.

His return is needed, as the Cardinals had five defensive linemen on injured reserve. So far this season, in five games of limited action, he had three tackles and two quarterback hurries.

Assuming he is healthy, he should be able to contribute this weekend for the team’s home game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Cardinals hopeful Larry Fitzgerald, others will come off COVID list this week

Fitzgerald, Trent Sherfield and Deionte Thompson all are on the COVID-19 reserve currently.

The Arizona Cardinals were missing three players on Sunday when they played and lost to the New England Patriots because they are currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Receiver Larry Fitzgerald tested positive for the virus, while receivers and special teams ace Trent Sherfield and safety Deionte Thompson also were placed on the list last week.

That might be the only game they miss.

“Talking with (Head Athletic Trainer) Tom Reed, we’re hopeful that all three guys will be available for Sunday, but that remains to be seen,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told media members Monday afternoon. “(Fitzgerald) is doing well, I know that. So, we’re going to go through those protocols, and hopefully, we have those guys for the game this weekend.”

Arizona missed Sherfield’s presence on special teams. A big punt return and a big kick return led directly to 10 of New England’s 20 points and were a major reason why the Pats were able to win despite the fact that Arizona outdid them in almost every important statistic.

Fitzgerald’s absence was noted, too. Getting everyone back on the active roster should give the Cardinals a better shot of beating the Los Angeles Rams this weekend.

Cardinals are home underdogs vs. Rams in Week 13

The Rams are favored by three points on the road against the Cardinals in Week 13.

The Arizona Cardinals have lost two straight games and three out of four, but they return to State Farm Stadium to host the Los Angeles Rams in Week 13. It will be the first of two meetings for the two teams in the final five weeks of the season.

The Cardinals have not beaten the Rams since the season finale of 2016.

As the week begins, they are betting underdogs against the Rams.

According to BetMGM, the Rams are favored by three points over the Cardinals.

For a straight-up win, the Rams are favored at -139, meaning it would take a $139 wager to win $100. Their implied odds of winning are 58.19%.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, are priced at +120, where a $100 wager would win $120. Their implied odds of winning are 45.45%.

The over/under for total points is set at 48.5, -110 on either side of the total.

The Cardinals are 5-6 against the spread this season. The Rams are 6-5 against the spread. When favored, Los Angeles is 4-4 ATS. As underdogs, the Cardinals are 3-1 overall and 3-1 against the spread.

In Arizona’s games, the total has gone Over only three of 11 games. The same is the case for the Rams.
