Why Texas is still in great shape after missing on Brockermeyer twins

While losing out on the Brockermeyer twins to Alabama will sting, there’s no need to panic.

Unfortunately, the highly-touted Brockermeyer brothers announced their commitment to Alabama on Friday.

At one point, it was almost a clear bet that the twins could be continuing their playing career at the University of Texas. You would have assumed that a long storied family tradition at Texas would have been the cherry on top, but Alabama head coach Nick Saban worked his magic to sway them away from Austin within the past few months.

It’s certainly a tough pill to swallow. Tommy was the No. 1 overall rated offensive tackle out of the 2021 recruiting class, his twin brother James was the top rated center. According to 247Sports Composite, Tommy is the No. 82 recruit of all-time.

The twins represent the most high-profile legacy recruits in the history of Texas football. As left tackle Sam Cosmi and center Derek Kerkstetter are likely to head to the NFL after this season, the Brockermeyer brothers could have found playing time nearly immediately.

Player development has oftentimes been an issue at Texas, but so has the instability in the coaching staff. If you’re forced to hire a new coach every three years, the roster turnover will be evident. As a recruit, you don’t look at a school like Alabama as if Nick Saban had any chance of leaving the program. With Texas, Tom Herman has his back against a wall after having to reshape his coaching staff this offseason.

Enough of the disheartening news. Let’s take a look at how Texas is still in great shape after missing out on the Brockermeyer brothers.
