Browns inactive player list for Week 7

Austin Hooper and Wyatt Teller are starters ruled out with injuries

The Cleveland Browns revealed the inactive player list for the Week 7 matchup in Cincinnati with the AFC North rival Bengals.

Three players were ruled out via injury. Right guard Wyatt Teller, tight end Austin Hooper and linebacker Jacob Phillips. Teller is missing his second straight game with a calf strain. Hooper had an emergency appendectomy on Friday that will sideline him for at least this week. Phillips continues to battle a knee injury.

Joining those inactive are WR Taywan Taylor and DE Joe Jackson, who recovered a fumble in the first meeting.

Chris Hubbard will start at RG for Teller once again. Ronnie Harrison also will start ahead of Karl Joseph at safety. Joseph was questionable for the game but will play.

Final Browns injury report for Week 7 vs. Bengals

3 Browns are ruled out, including two offensive starters

Three Cleveland Browns players have been ruled out in the final Week 7 injury report. That includes two starters who will miss the rematch with the Bengals.

The most surprising development is the loss of Austin Hooper for the game. Hooper suffered a bout of appendicitis and needed an emergency appendectomy on Friday. He will miss at least this week’s game.

Also ruled out are starting RG Wyatt Teller (calf) and rookie LB Jacob Phillips (knee). Both players missed the Week 6 loss in Pittsburgh as well.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield will play through the pain with his bruised ribs, an injury suffered in Week 5. He did not have an injury designation this week. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry suffered a broken rib in the same game but he will also continue to play.

Safety Karl Joseph is listed as questionable for the game after missing the last two contests due to a bum hamstring. Ronnie Harrison, who started in Joseph’s place in Week 5, is back without any injury designation. Harrison missed the Pittsburgh game with a concussion. Sheldon Richardson will also play after missing Thursday’s practice with a minor Achilles ailment.

Browns inactive player list for Week 6 includes 4 injured players

Sheldrick Redwine gets the start at safety

Head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t have to work too hard to fill out the inactive player list for the Browns in Week 6. With four players ruled out on Friday due to injuries, Stefanski’s choices on who to keep inactive were quite limited.

Already ruled out due to injury:

  • Starting right guard Wyatt Teller (calf)
  • Starting safety Karl Joseph (hamstring)
  • Joseph’s replacement at safety, Ronnie Harrison (concussion)
  • LB Jacob Phillips (knee)

Adding to those inactive, the Browns will not dress two defensive linemen, Vincent Taylor and Joe Jackson.

Sheldrick Redwine will start for the injured safeties, while Chris Hubbard takes over for Teller at right guard.

Final Week 6 Browns injury report: 4 out, 6 questionable vs. Steelers

2 of the top 3 safeties and RG Wyatt Teller are all out

If it was possible for an entire football team to limp into an opposing stadium, the Cleveland Browns would be doing so in Week 6. The Browns head to Pittsburgh to face the unbeaten Steelers with four regulars ruled out and six others questionable with various maladies.

The most prominent name of the foursome ruled out is starting right guard Wyatt Teller. Pronounced week-to-week earlier by head coach Kevin Stefanski, Teller will miss the first game since he suffered a calf strain in Week 5.

Also ruled out

  • Safety Karl Joseph
  • Safety Ronnie Harrison
  • LB Jacob Phillips

Harrison started in place of Joseph in Week 5, but a concussion will keep him on the sidelines. Joseph still hasn’t been a full go at practice and will miss his second consecutive week. Expect a healthy dose of Sheldrick Redwine at safety.

As expected all week, quarterback Baker Mayfield is listed as questionable with his bruised ribs. The QB expects to play.

WR Odell Beckham Jr. is also questionable with his still-undisclosed illness. Beckham tested negative for COVID-19 on Friday after being sent home on Thursday. He is required to remain quarantined until he gets another negative test.

The rest of the questionable list:

  • WR Jarvis Landry
  • Punter Jamie Gillan
  • DT Larry Ogunjobi
  • DE Olivier Vernon

Steelers vs. Browns: 3 key starters ruled out for Sunday’s matchup

An ailing Browns team will be without (at least) two defensive playmakers on Sunday.

On Friday, safeties Karl Joseph (hamstring) and Ronnie Harrison (concussion), two of Cleveland’s key defensive players, were ruled out for Sunday’s Steelers square-off at Heinz Field.

Joseph was placed on injured reserve back in August with a lingering foot injury he sustained in Oakland last season but has played since Week 1.  He contributed an interception for a 49-yard touchdown versus Washington in Week 3. Joseph recently suffered a hamstring injury that also kept him out of last week’s Browns-Colts matchup.

Harrison sustained the concussion when he started in place of Joseph versus the Colts. Prior to exiting the game, he scored on a pick-six to give the Browns a halftime lead.

Third-year guard Wyatt Teller has also been ruled out for Sunday.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield and starting receivers Odell Beckham, Jr. and Jarvis Landry are all, apparently, questionable. They could just be punkin’ the Black and Gold. Me thinks punks be punkin’.

We’ll see on Sunday… Here we go!

Browns RG Wyatt Teller has strained calf and is week-to-week

Chris Hubbard will fill in if Teller can’t go in Week 6

Wyatt Teller has been one of the NFL’s most pleasant surprises in the first few weeks of the 2020 season. Teller has turned in an outstanding first month as the Browns’ starting right guard, earning tremendous praise and respect from teammates, coaches, opponents and analytic judges like Pro Football Focus.

Unfortunately, Teller might miss some time with a calf strain. He was forced out of Sunday’s win over the Indianapolis Colts after just 14 snaps and did not return.

The Browns have deemed Teller’s injury week-to-week.

“We will see, but it is a calf strain,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said on Monday. “I would put it at week-to-week, less so day-to-day.”

Chris Hubbard filled in against the Colts and played well in his first-ever NFL reps at guard.

As he has made his custom, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski opened his postgame press conference with an opening statement that provided some basic updates on the players injured during the game. Sunday’s list from the 32-23 win over the Indianapolis Colts was a lengthier one than hoped for.

Stefanski had to offer updates on starting right guard Wyatt Teller, safety Ronnie Harrison, linebacker Jacob Phillips and starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Teller injured his calf in the first half and did not return. He was initially ruled as questionable to return but was later ruled out at halftime. Teller was replaced by Chris Hubbard.

Harrison suffered a concussion on the Colts’ offensive possession after his pick-six off Philip Rivers boosted the Browns lead to 27-10. He was replaced by Sheldrick Redwine, who notched an interception of his own.

Phillips departed with a knee injury. His role was largely covered by Malcolm Smith.

From Stefanski’s presser,

“I will start with (G) Wyatt Teller has a calf strain. He will have an MRI in the morning. (S) Ronnie Harrison (Jr.) has a concussion. We will know more about that in the next couple days. (LB) Jacob Phillips has a knee injury. He will have an MRI in the morning, and we will know more about that.”

He also addressed Mayfield and his injured ribs.

“Yeah, it was ribs, and we will have an X-ray here later.”

Mayfield also indicated he was getting X-rays on his ribs on Monday in his own postgame press conference.

Wyatt Teller leaves with calf injury, questionable to return

Chris Hubbard took over at right guard

The Cleveland Browns suffered a tough injury in the first half of Sunday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts. Standout right guard Wyatt Teller left the game with a calf injury.

Initially listed as probable to return, the Browns downgraded Teller to questionable after another drive with Teller on the sideline. Chris Hubbard took over as the right guard on the Browns two TD drives in the second quarter.

Teller has been a tremendous success story in the first month of the season. He is the NFL’s highest-graded offensive player at any position by Pro Football Focus through Week 4.

Browns RG Wyatt Teller: ‘I know I can still get better’

Teller has been fantastic and gives credit to Browns OL coach Bill Callahan

Wyatt Teller is one of the breakout stars of the first four games across the NFL. Teller’s play as the Browns right guard has drawn huge praise, making him a leading early candidate for most improved player.

Yet Teller is not satisfied. He knows there is still a higher ceiling for his play.

“I still want to start with it is still early,” Teller told reporters in his Zoom press conference on Wednesday. “I know that I can play at a high level, but I know that I can still get better. That is one thing that a lot of people have been patting me on the back, telling me ‘Oh, you are amazing. You are amazing. Your stuff don’t stink.’ I am like, ‘Hey, let me tell you, there is always something you can improve on. There is always something you can get better at.’ I can see it in almost every play. Even if it is plus-plus and Pro Football Focus puts it as a crazy play, I am still like, ‘Wow, I could have fit my backside hand underneath and gotten more lift and even more push.’ That is always the mindset. You are always trying to get better.”

The Pro Football Focus Teller references is because he was named the right guard on PFF’s all-star team of the first quarter of the season. He is currently the highest-rated offensive player at any position.

Teller, who was the biggest question mark on the entire Browns offense entering the season, gives a lot of credit to offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The veteran OL coach has been instrumental in helping Teller — and the other linemen — continually refine and master their blocking techniques.

Teller was asked about why it works with Callahan.

“His attention to detail,” Teller stated. “Someone would say, ‘Wow, that is the perfect block,’ and he would be like, ‘Ah, but his toe was 45 degrees the wrong way.’ I am telling you, that is the biggest thing. ‘Alright, Coach, I got you. Alright. Yeah.’ There is a little bit of that. I know that Coach, he just wants the best and he wants his guys to succeed.”

The improvement with Teller, a former 5th-round pick by the Buffalo Bills who occasionally flashed but never consistently played well prior to 2020, is a testament to the attitude and talent of both men.

Browns offense gets major love from PFF grades in Week 4

Several Browns scored very high grades in the Week 4 win, and nearly all played offense

No team outscored the Cleveland Browns and their 49-point outburst in the win over Dallas on Sunday in Week 4. Befitting the dominant performance by the offense, several Browns players scored fantastic grades from Pro Football Focus.

None were higher than right guard Wyatt Teller, who continues his superb season in PFF’s eyes. Teller graded out an astonishing 96.7 overall in regularly snowplowing Cowboys defenders out of the way in the run game. Right tackle Jack Conklin also broke into elite territory with his 92.0 game grade.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was next up with an 87.8. His run grade of 91.0 helped boost a grade that also saw him hit 77.8 in the passing game, a very good score for a wideout. Four other Browns offensive players cracked the 80.0 grading mark:

  • D’Ernest Johnson
  • Kareem Hunt
  • Andy Janovich
  • Jarvis Landry

The flip side is the Dallas defense. The top-graded player who saw at least 10 snaps, safety Xavier Woods, earned a paltry 59.4 overall grade. That’s barely above what Browns safety Andrew Sendejo (57.3) earned for the game.

Cleveland’s own defense had some rough scores, though a couple of defenders did stand out. DE Myles Garrett and his two sacks and eight total QB pressures scored a high 84.7 overall mark, while CB Denzel Ward earned a 78.5 weighed down heavily by two missed tackles.
