Wisconsin approves six contract extensions for Badger head coaches

Six Badger head coaches earn contract extensions

Late last week, the UW Athletic Board approved contract extensions for six Wisconsin head coaches.

The board met on Friday, and gave extensions to six coaches across four different Wisconsin sports.

Well a number of coaches on the list led their respective Wisconsin programs to new heights last season, others earned a vote of confidence from AD Chris McIntosh despite up and down 2021-22 campaigns.

All six coaches on the list earned five-year extensions that will take them through the 2027 school year.

Here is a look at the six coaches and their respective extensions as decided by the UW Athletic Board:

Yea, there’s another Caufield brother.

After Cole Caufield left to the NHL after last season and went on to dominate in the Montreal Canadiens’ trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, his younger brother Brock now continues the namesake at Wisconsin for another season.

Brock has played in eight games for the 4-5 Badgers this season, recording 2 goals, 1 assist and 29 shots.

Wisconsin hockey’s Cole Caufield named Big Ten freshman of the year

The future Montreal Canadian earned high honors in the Big Ten this season

Despite a rocky year for Wisconsin hockey, their star freshman is getting the conference love that he deserves. Earlier today, Cole Caufield was named Big Ten freshman of the year and named to the All-Big Ten first team.

Caufield took the nation by storm early and often this season. The star forward was a first round draft pick of the Montreal Canadians in last years NHL entry draft.

USATSI_12937517.jpgHe went on to score two goals in his first three career games at Wisconsin. Overall, Caufield finished with 19 goals and 36 points, both team highs. Wisconsin ended up going just 14-20-2 despite a plethora of NHL talent on the roster.

Wisconsin defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk also was named to the Big Ten first team.

Ohio State men’s hockey drops second game of weekend to Wisconsin

The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost the second game of a two-game weekend series to split with Wisconsin.

The Ohio State men’s hockey team has been on a roll as of late, going 8-1-1 in its last ten games coming into Sunday night against Wisconsin. It also took the first contest against the Badgers on Friday night and were hoping for the weekend sweep Saturday.

It was not meant to be.

It started off good enough. The Badgers scored first just after a power play at 13:28 of the first before Ohio State answered back. Ronnie Hein scored a power-play goal with 2:22 left in the period to knot it up at one apiece headed to the first break.

But Wisconsin turned up the heat in the second period, scoring four goals to just one by the Buckeyes to lead 5-2 after two periods of play. The badgers got four-straight goals at 17:01, 15:37, 5:19, and 3:30 of the period — the last of which on the power-play. Sam McCormick scored his first goal of the year to provide Ohio State with its only goal of the period, but the damage was done.

The third period got a little chippy and both teams had some scoring chances, but the score held with no goals and the Buckeyes fell by way of the same 5-2 score.

With the loss, Ohio State drops to 14-6-2 overall, and 7-4-1-0 in the Big Ten. The Bucks are next in action with a two-game set against Notre Dame at home next weekend.
