Twitter reacts to Penn State’s NCAA Hockey Tournament loss to Michigan

Twitter reacts to Penn State hockey’s incredible run before losing to Michigan in NCAA Tournament.

Penn State has had a rough year against the Michigan Wolverines. Between 2022 and 2023 they have beaten Penn State in football, basketball, wrestling, and now hockey.

No bigger stage than the losses to Michigan in wrestling and hockey but the hockey one stings more because the Nittany Lions were one win away from their first Frozen Four appearance in program history. Despite having the lead late into the third period, it wasn’t meant to be as the Wolverines would tie it up before eventually scoring the winning goal in overtime.

This game had Penn State fans treating it like a football game and Twitter reflected that, here are some of those tweets.

Penn State hockey one win away from Frozen Four. How to watch Penn State-Michigan on Sunday

Penn State hockey looks for a historic victory on Sunday with a spot in the Frozen Four on the line against Michigan.

After a dominant victory in round one of the NCAA Hockey Tournament in Allentown on Friday, Penn State looks to advance to its first Frozen Four on Sunday. To do that, Penn State will have to top the region’s top seed and Big Ten champion Michigan.

Michigan leads the all-time series with Penn State by a 25-15-1 margin. That includes a 3-1 record against the Nittany Lions this season, but the games played this year have generally been close decisions. So Penn State knows it can play with one of the top hockey programs in the country this season, and it hopes to have enough of a home-ice advantage in the PPL Center in Allentown to fuel a major upset for the biggest win in the history of the program.

Both Big Ten programs are coming off blowout victories in the first round. Penn State scored the NCAA’s most lopsided victory in tournament history with an 8-0 victory over Michigan Tech. But that record stood for just a few hours as Michigan followed with an 11-1 victory over Colgate. So it may be safe to say the offenses are clicking and the goalies will be challenged with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line.

Penn State and Michigan are playing for one spot in the Frozen Four, but as many as three Big Ten teams could fill the Frozen Four in Tampa. Ohio State dominated Harvard in their first-round matchup, 8-1, and faces Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Bridgeport, CT. Minnesota, the top seed in the tournament, has already clinched a spot in the Frozen Four with a second-round victory over St. Cloud State. The Gophers are set to face Boston in a Frozen Four matchup on Monday, April 6.

If you want to watch Penn State hockey go for a historic win, here’s how to catch all of the action with a spot in the Frozen Four on the line.

Penn State hockey returns to NCAA tournament, will face Michigan Tech

Penn State’s hockey team will play in this year’s NCAA tournament and will get a nice home-ice advantage

The tournament madness may have come to an end for the men’s basketball team, but Penn State’s March mayhem is just about to begin. Penn State’s ice hockey team was selected to participate in this year’s Division 1 men’s ice hockey championship tournament with hopes of playing in its first Frozen Four after finishing its season with a record of 21-15-1. That postseason run will begin on Friday with a matchup against Michigan Tech (24-10-4) in Allentown.

This is the third NCAA tournament berth for Penn State. It is Penn State’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2018 after making back-to-back appearances in 2017 and 2018. Penn State is serving as the host institution in Allentown, and the Nittany Lions figure to have a bit of a home-ice advantage in the PPL Center this weekend.

The matchup with Michigan Tech marks the first meeting between the two programs. If Penn State can get by Michigan Tech, a possible showdown with Big Ten champion Michigan could come next. Michigan will face Colgate in the other regional semifinal on Friday evening in Allentown. The winners of Friday night’s game will play each other on Sunday with a trip to the Frozen Four in Tampa on the line.

Penn State was 10-0 this season in non-conference play and was 1-3 against Michigan during the regular season. Two of those losses were decided by one goal, including an overtime loss at home earlier in the Big Ten schedule.

Minnesota and Ohio State also made the NCAA tournament, giving the Big Ten four spots in the field. Minnesota is the top seed in the Fargo regional and will face Canisius in the first round, with a possible matchup with Minnesota State or St. Cloud State to follow. Ohio State will take on Harvard in the Bridgeport regional in Connecticut. The Buckeyes hope to face either Quinnipiac or Merrimack in the following round.

Penn State lost its only game played in the 2018 NCAA hockey tournament, losing 5-1 to Denver in Allentown. Denver also eliminated Penn State the previous season in the second round, after Penn State blasted Union 10-3 in the first round in Cincinnati.

Penn State hockey shocks No. 6 North Dakota in major program win

Penn State hockey scored one of its biggest wins in program history over the weekend by topping No. 6 North Dakota.

Saturday night may not have gone all that well for the Penn State football program, but it was quite a different story on the ice for the Penn State men’s hockey program. Penn State shocked No. 6 North Dakota in the 2021 US Hockey Hall of Fame game from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Few things can be considered a program-building block like a head-to-head victory over one of the true bluebloods of the college hockey world.

Clayton Phillip scored two goals to fuel the upset bid by Penn State. The loss is the first suffered by North Dakota this season.

There is no question that this is a huge win for a Penn State program that is looking to continue to develop into one of the nation’s finest in the country. Two years removed from a Big Ten championship-destined season, the Nittany Lions can use this game to establish some momentum heading into the meat of their schedule.

Next up for the Penn State hockey program is a Big Ten matchup with Ohio State. Perhaps the Nittany Lions will do on the ice what they were unable to do on the football field this Friday night in Columbus.

Penn State hockey: Things fall apart in third period in loss to Canisius

Penn State hockey has had better third periods than the one they experienced against Canisius

After a season-opening sweep to begin the season, the Penn State men’s hockey team looks to remain undefeated as they began a weekend series against Canisius Golden Griffins from Pegula Ice Arena.

Both teams had some chances to score but both goalies were up for the test and it would be a scoreless first period.

In the second period, Canisius got the scoring started. Penn State would respond back on Goal from Kevin Wall to tie things up at 1-1.

The third period was when things just went wrong for the Nittany Lions with sloppy play and, at times, getting outplayed in their own end. Canisius would burn the Nittany Lions with three goals for a 4-1 win and give the Nittany Lions their first loss on the season.

“Give Canisius a ton of credit for playing a great game, they beat us, absolutely,” Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky said in his postgame comments. “They beat us physically, I thought they played to their identity much better than we did and I think it was a great lesson for us.”

“I honestly felt like we wanted a cute game and we’ve gone through that attitude in the past and had to change it and hopefully this is a really good lesson because we’re not a cute team, but we played like we wanted to be tonight,” Gadowsky went on to say.

A look inside the opposing locker room told the story. Canisius was the team ready to seize the moment. Penn State was clearly not.

Penn State hockey student section SOLD OUT for 2021-22 season

Penn State students have already sold out their tickets for the upcoming college hockey season.

We are one month away from the return of Penn State men’s hockey and there is a certain feel about this season as the fans are allowed back into the stands this season. And with that, Happy Valley will once again be known as Hockey Valley as fans help create the ultimate home-ice advantage in the Big Ten.

The return of fans has easily generated excitement about this upcoming season. Earlier this week Penn State announced that the student section sold out.

The start of a new season on the ice will begin on October 3. The Nittany Lions open their 2021-22 campaign with a home game against Long Island University at the rocking Pegula Ice Arena.

Penn State hockey names team captains for 2021-22 season

Penn State football is just about to get started but the hockey team just named their captains for the upcoming season too.

Sure, we’re all getting amped for the start of the Penn State football season, which is now just days away. But that won’t stop the Penn State hockey fans from thinking about the start of another season on the ice. On Thursday, Penn State’s hockey program announced who the captains for this year’s squad will be.

Paul DeNaples was voted team captain while Clayton Phillips, Adam Pilewicz, and Connor McMenamin will serve as alternates.

“Being a good teammate and properly representing the University that gave me this amazing opportunity has been a priority of mine since I stepped foot on campus,” DeNaples said in a released statement. “For my teammates and coaches to believe and trust in me to represent them is very humbling. Nothing is more important to me than to keep building this culture and to lead this team to a championship. I’m excited to get the season going and to see what we will achieve as a team.”

The Nittany Lions will get their season started at Pegula Ice Arena on October 3 against Long Island University.

Penn State hockey to face college hockey powerhouse North Dakota

Penn State’s hockey program will get a good opportunity to go up against one of the best programs in the country in non-conference play this season

It’s easy to get caught up in the countdown to kickoff, but we are two months away until the college hockey season returns to State College as well. And there is a certain feel about the Penn State men’s hockey team after a trip to the Big Ten semifinals a year after having a Big Ten championship shot on home ice wiped out due to COVID.

As the season begins to approach, Penn State has confirmed its non-conference schedule, and it includes a very notable opponent. The Nittany Lions will take on a college hockey powerhouse in North Dakota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Nashville, Tennessee. The game is scheduled for Saturday, October 30.

North Dakota is a eight-time national champion, including their most recent title in 2016. The Fighting Hawks are coming off a season in which they went 16-4-2 and a second-striaght first-place finish in the NCHC. North Dakota was eliminated in the NCAA tournament by Minnesota-Duluth in the regional final in an epic five-overtime marathon. For as much as Penn State has quickly grown as a hockey program, getting a chance to go face-to-face with one of the sport’s top-tier programs is a great opportunity.

The home schedule in non-conferenc replay will include games against Canisius, Long Island, Maine, and Niagara. Penn State will play a road game at St. Thomas as well.

Penn State will take on Canisius, Long Island, Maine, and Niagara at Pegula Ice Arena, they will travel to St. Thomas.

The rest of the regular season schedule will be released at a later date once the Big Ten confirms its schedule.

WATCH: Awesome time lapse of ice being made at Penn State’s Pegula Ice Arena

Check out this awesome time-lapse video of the ice being added to the hockey rink on Penn State’s campus.

Like all other sports beginning in the fall, Penn State will welcome fans back to 100% capacity at the PEgula Ice Center next season for Penn State men’s and women’s hockey. And because it is never too early to start getting ready for some pucks to drop, the staff at the Pegula Ice Arena showed off video of the ice being added to the rink.

And honestly, given the heat many of us have had to deal with this week, why not spend a few moments watching some ice and thinking about some hockey?

Penn State’s men’s hockey program is hoping to bounce back with a stronger, and more consistent  2021-22 season after a step back last season. The women’s hockey team is coming off a much more successful season with a 16-3-2 record before being eliminated in the College Hockey America  Tournament in the semifinals by Syracuse in early March.
