Notre Dame linebacker announces retirement

A Notre Dame linebacker is hanging up his cleats and pads…

Notre Dame linebacker Will Schweitzer announced his retirement from football on Wednesday. Schweitzer was diagnosed with a heart condition in the fall. Schweitzer announced the news on social media as Notre Dame was getting set to open spring practice.

Schweitzer came to Notre Dame from Los Gatos, California, where he was rated as a three-star recruit by each 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals. Schweitzer played in three games for the Irish during his career, recording a tackle in a 55-0 win over Georgia Tech in November of his freshman year.

All the best to Will in the rest of his time at Notre Dame and beyond.

Notre Dame junior tight end will medically retire due to heart condition

We wish Will the best

With spring practice beginning today for the [autotag]Notre Dame Fighting Irish[/autotag], there is always updates on players and their futures.

For junior [autotag]Will Schweitzer[/autotag], today was always going to be difficult. In a post made to Twitter, the third-year tight end from California has medically retired from football due to a congenital heart condition.

He will continue to be a part of the Irish football family and stay enrolled in school to finish out his degree. It is unfortunate that Schweitzer and his family had to go through this, but on the bright side, he has made a full recovery and his future prognosis looks very promising.

As a prospect, Schweitzer was rated as the 592nd overall prospect and the 64th best linebacker in the country according to the 247Sports composite. We wish Will nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

Notre Dame injury update ahead of Boston College game

An updated look at Notre Dame’s injury report ahead of Boston College game.

When you make it to the last couple of weeks of November no football player is 100%.  That’s certainly the case for Notre Dame as with two games remaining, plenty of players are dealing with their own issues from concussions to bruises to sprains and plenty else.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]’s final media availability before Saturday’s senior day kickoff against Boston College took place on Thursday. During it, he updated the status of more than just a few of the players who are battling through some things.  Here is the latest we have from Freeman on several of the Fighting Irish players working to return to the field.

Notre Dame Football: Meet the 2021 Recruiting Commitments

Find out more about Notre Dame’s stars of tomorrow right here in the 2021 recruiting class commitments!

Notre Dame had big dreams of their 2021 recruiting class and despite not hitting a home run on their most desired playmaker and one of the nation’s top receivers dropping his commitment, the Fighting Irish still stand in pretty good shape.

The Irish have 20 commitments in the 2021 class and are ranked 11th nationally according to 247Sports. Although it’s not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he stated his goal was to land a class in the top five, it’s one with a bunch of high-side potential players who offer a lot of versatility where they can line up.

Here are the commitments in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class. Be sure to check back often and see who has been added or removed themselves from the list.

Midweek Recruiting Update: Johnson offer, latest on Colzie, and more

A look at the latest recruiting news for Notre Dame Football.

It’s safe to say that it’s been fairly quiet on the recruiting trail for the Irish. The coaching staff changed that last night, as they offered Northwestern commit Theran Johnson.

The instate cornerback has been committed to the ‘Cats since May 3 of this year, Johnson is a very solid prospect. He stands six-feet tall and weights 170-pounds. The offer should catch Johnsons attention as aside from Northwestern, every other one of his offers are from non-Power Five schools.

I love this offer, Johnson is a player that might take some time to develop, but getting some of the better talent in Indiana to play for the Irish is a positive development. Almost all of the top 25 players in the state are heading off to a Power Five team, the Irish only have a commit from Blake Fisher. Yes, he’s a big one, literally and figuratively, the top overall player in the state.

Looking ahead at what’s to come for the Irish, the potential for Georgia wide receiver Deion Colzie to rejoin the class is looking better and better as we inch towards his commitment date on the 28th of this month.

Tom Loy, of Irish Illustrated, changed his crystal ball pick to the Irish. That gives me a ton of confidence that as of right now, Colzie is trending to rejoining Lorenzo Styles Jr. as the wide receivers in the 2021 class.

Right now the class consists of nine players on offense: quarterback Tyler Buchner, running back Logan Diggs, Styles Jr., Fisher, offensive tackle Joe Alt, guard Rocco Spindler, center Pat Coogan and tight end’s Mitchell Evans and Cane Berrong.

The defensive commits are a group of nine as well: defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio, defensive ends David Abiara and Jason Onye, linebackers Prince Collie and Will Schweitzer, and defensive backs Philip Riley, Ryan Barnes, Chance Tucker and Justin Walters.

The group of 18 players ranks 12th at ESPN, 13th at 247Sports and 11th at Rivals. Brian Kelly has a solid group of three players committed in the 2022 class: offensive tackle Joey Tanona, tight end Jack Nickel and safety Nolan Ziegler.

It has been a bit slow, but with Colzie’s timeline to recommit set and spatula being brought out to flip Johnson, there could be some positive movement for the Irish. Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire for the latest in Notre Dame Football recruiting.

Scout’s view: Newest Notre Dame commit LB Will Schweitzer

Take a look at what can be expected in the future out of the Irish’s newest commit, linebacker Will Schweitzer.

The Notre Dame Football coaching staff realized there was a need at linebacker and have quickly made up for lost time. First it was Prince Kollie from Tennessee and today they got the spatula out and flipped former Nebraska commit Will Schweitzer.

Let’s take a look at what to expect out of the newest Irish commit Schweitzer.

The first thing that jumps out is Schweitzer’s size, at 6-foot-4-inches and 220-pounds, he looks skinny with room to add good weight on. What I love is his versatility, being able to line up with one hand in the ground or roaming the middle of the field and just reacting to the play. Schweitzer shows a variety of moves from defensive end, often going to his favorite spin move to elude offensive linemen. He plays sideline to sideline and when he matures and just focuses on defense (he plays tight end on offense), Schweitzer has a huge ceiling. He reads plays well and has an endless motor, Schweitzer looks like a perfect hybrid outside linebacker, playing off the line when needed and rushing the passer on obvious situations.

Brian Kelly and defensive line coach Clark Lea got a good one Sunday night, filling a need at linebacker and adding to an impressive 2021 class. Schweitzer is the 18th total commit, putting the Irish class at 12th nationally according to the 247Sports composite.

Notre Dame Football: Irish land commitment from former Nebraska verbal

Brian Kelly has flipped linebacker Will Schweitzer from Nebraska this evening.

Notre Dame had been in pursuit of outside linebacker Will Schweitzer before the Los Gatos, California product gave Nebraska a verbal commitment back on June 11.

Mid-afternoon Sunday saw Schweitzer take that commitment back as he gave Scott Frost and the Cornhuskers the old, “thanks, but no thanks” and decommitted.

After sharing that news, Schweitzer quickly noted that his mind had already been made up and that his next destination would be announced Sunday evening.

That announcement wound up being that he’d be joining Notre Dame, as Schweitzer becomes the 18th commitment in the 2021 recruiting class for Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish.

It’s been quite a turn of events for Notre Dame at linebacker as they’ve gone from not having a commitment at the position since the 2019 class to now gaining a pair of them in the last ten days.

Schweitzer is graded as a three-star prospect on both 247Sports and Rivals. He checks in at 6-4, 220 pounds. He recorded 130 tackles, nine of which were for loss, a pair of sacks and three interceptions as a junior in 2019 at Los Gatos High School in California.

The Schweitzer commitment also helps soften the blow of a potential decommitment David Abiara whose verbal commitment to Notre Dame is viewed more as a toss-up at this point.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire as we’ll keep you updated on everything Notre Dame recruiting all year long!
