Who do you most want to see Notre Dame bring in via the portal?

Whether you like it or not, the transfer portal has taken college athletics by storm and changed the landscape of college sports forever. Notre Dame has experienced this in recent years. It has had players exit and players arrive via the portal.

So who is leaving Notre Dame via the portal in 2022-23? We’re keeping you up to date on who enters the portal, where they end up and who Notre Dame lands via the portal this offseason.

Here are all the Notre Dame players to enter the portal since the start of the 2022 season. Those who transfer into Notre Dame will be tracked as well.

Notre Dame tight end announces transfer destination

All the best in this next phase!

After battling through injuries in his two years at Notre Dame, tight end [autotag]Cane Berrong[/autotag] entered the transfer portal this off-season.  After getting offers from all over the country, Berrong has announced that he will continue his college football career at Coastal Carolina University.

Coastal Carolina is coming off a season where they started 9-1 before dropping three-straight to end it, including a 53-29 loss in the Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina.  The Chanticleers are a combined 31-7 over the last three seasons.

Berrrong played in three games in 2021 and one game in 2022 for Notre Dame. He’ll have three years of eligibility remaining as the Hartwell, Georgia native will be a bit closer to home.

Notre Dame football: 5 things to know for December 13, 2022

5 things to know for Tuesday

Here we are 12 days until Christmas and 17 until Notre Dame takes on South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. College football postseasons feel a whole lot different since the start of the College Football Playoff combined with the transfer portal and early signing periods.

As we count down the days until Santa drops off gifts and until we see this 2022 Notre Dame squad take the field for a final time, there are a few things to be aware of this Tuesday. Some have to do with the transfer portal, some have to do with Notre Dame players receiving national honors, and others have to do with that hated word, decommitment.

Here are your five things to know with Notre Dame football for Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Notre Dame loses tight end to transfer portal

Best of luck to him in the future!

Another Notre Dame player has entered the transfer portal: It appears tight end Cane Berrong has played his final down with the Fighting Irish. Berrong was one of two tight ends to enter Notre Dame in the 2021 recruiting class.  An ACL injury suffered during his freshman season stunted his development the past two years.

Berrong played on special teams before the injury as a freshman.  Due to the ACL injury in 2021, Berrong was not cleared to play until late in 2022. He saw action in one contest this fall.

Notre Dame also saw the development of Mitchell Evans and Holden Staes at the position, making it easy to see how Berrong’s journey to the top of Notre Dame’s tight end depth chart was anything but guaranteed.

A few of college football’s biggest names were in pursuit of Berrong before he signed with Notre Dame. The Georgia native had offers from Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and others.

The Irish lose Berrong after already losing Michael Mayer to the NFL draft.  Notre Dame isn’t going to return much production at tight end in 2023, but Evans, Staes, Eli Raridon and Kevin Baumann are set to return. Cooper Flanagan is set to join the Irish in the 2023 recruiting class as well.

Notre Dame injury update ahead of Boston College game

An updated look at Notre Dame’s injury report ahead of Boston College game.

When you make it to the last couple of weeks of November no football player is 100%.  That’s certainly the case for Notre Dame as with two games remaining, plenty of players are dealing with their own issues from concussions to bruises to sprains and plenty else.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]’s final media availability before Saturday’s senior day kickoff against Boston College took place on Thursday. During it, he updated the status of more than just a few of the players who are battling through some things.  Here is the latest we have from Freeman on several of the Fighting Irish players working to return to the field.

Notre Dame loses another tight end for season

The third Notre Dame tight end to tear an ACL at practice in almost exactly a year.

The injuries continue to pile up for Notre Dame. On Thursday it was announced freshman tight end [autotag]Eli Raridon[/autotag] will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL. Raridon underwent ACL surgery less than a year ago (December 2021) but was ready for fall camp and contributed as a true freshman.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] stated Raridon suffered a non-contact injury to the same knee he had surgery on last year. Freeman confirmed the injury occurred during practice this week and will again require surgery.

Raridon was seeing the field a significant amount as a true freshman, playing 30 snaps against North Carolina and 35 against BYU before seeing less against Stanford as sophomore Mitchell Evans returned to play after undergoing foot surgery in fall camp.

With [autotag]Kevin Bauman[/autotag] already out for the year with an ACL injury, Notre Dame is left with junior [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], sophomore [autotag]Davis Sherwood[/autotag] and true freshman [autotag]Holden Staes[/autotag] as the only scholarship tight ends on the roster.  Cane Berrong is expected to be available again soon after suffering a torn ACL as a freshman last fall.

Notre Dame offers 2022 Georgia star safety

The Notre Dame staff stay busy on the recruiting trail, trying to continue the Georgia pipeline to South Bend.

There will be open spots in the Notre Dame secondary following this coming season and the competition with be fierce. New Irish defensive coordinator knows that most likely star safety Kyle Hamilton will leave early to the NFL while Houston Griffith could make his move as well, he’s due to graduate this spring.

With all that in mind, Brian Kelly and Freeman are searching for their next star defensive back and offered Georgia safety Emory Floyd today.

The six-foot-three-inch and 165-pound star has already set a commitment date for May 7th. The Irish join an impressive list of offers that include Georgia, Florida, Auburn, North Carolina and others.

If I was pitching Floyd, I would remind him that the Georgia safety pipeline to South Bend is strong with Hamilton and the recently signed Khari Gee. It’s not just in the secondary that the pipeline is strong either, the Irish just signed wide receivers Deion Colzie and Jayden Thomas and tight end Cane Berrong from the state in the last recruiting cycle. In the 2022 class, tight end Jack Nickel hails from Georgia as well.

Although it does seem like the Irish have some ground to make up in Floyd’s recruitment, instate Georgia is the perceived leader, there is still time to make a big time impression on the Georgian.

Notre Dame Recruiting update: Fisher keeps 5-Star status, focus on ‘22 and more

A look a the latest Notre Dame Football recruiting news with more offers, Blake Fisher staying a 5-Star and much more.

The first signing period for 2021 recruits is fast approaching and Notre Dame  is fighting for a top recruiting class once again. At the current moment, the Irish have 23 commits, with room for a few more. The class ranks among the best in the nation.

It was another week of making some moves with high level prospects, Blake Fisher keeps all the stars next to his name, recruits finish their high school careers and more.

Notre Dame Football: Meet the 2021 Recruiting Commitments

Find out more about Notre Dame’s stars of tomorrow right here in the 2021 recruiting class commitments!

Notre Dame had big dreams of their 2021 recruiting class and despite not hitting a home run on their most desired playmaker and one of the nation’s top receivers dropping his commitment, the Fighting Irish still stand in pretty good shape.

The Irish have 20 commitments in the 2021 class and are ranked 11th nationally according to 247Sports. Although it’s not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he stated his goal was to land a class in the top five, it’s one with a bunch of high-side potential players who offer a lot of versatility where they can line up.

Here are the commitments in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class. Be sure to check back often and see who has been added or removed themselves from the list.

Midweek Recruiting Update: Johnson offer, latest on Colzie, and more

A look at the latest recruiting news for Notre Dame Football.

It’s safe to say that it’s been fairly quiet on the recruiting trail for the Irish. The coaching staff changed that last night, as they offered Northwestern commit Theran Johnson.

The instate cornerback has been committed to the ‘Cats since May 3 of this year, Johnson is a very solid prospect. He stands six-feet tall and weights 170-pounds. The offer should catch Johnsons attention as aside from Northwestern, every other one of his offers are from non-Power Five schools.

I love this offer, Johnson is a player that might take some time to develop, but getting some of the better talent in Indiana to play for the Irish is a positive development. Almost all of the top 25 players in the state are heading off to a Power Five team, the Irish only have a commit from Blake Fisher. Yes, he’s a big one, literally and figuratively, the top overall player in the state.

Looking ahead at what’s to come for the Irish, the potential for Georgia wide receiver Deion Colzie to rejoin the class is looking better and better as we inch towards his commitment date on the 28th of this month.

Tom Loy, of Irish Illustrated, changed his crystal ball pick to the Irish. That gives me a ton of confidence that as of right now, Colzie is trending to rejoining Lorenzo Styles Jr. as the wide receivers in the 2021 class.

Right now the class consists of nine players on offense: quarterback Tyler Buchner, running back Logan Diggs, Styles Jr., Fisher, offensive tackle Joe Alt, guard Rocco Spindler, center Pat Coogan and tight end’s Mitchell Evans and Cane Berrong.

The defensive commits are a group of nine as well: defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio, defensive ends David Abiara and Jason Onye, linebackers Prince Collie and Will Schweitzer, and defensive backs Philip Riley, Ryan Barnes, Chance Tucker and Justin Walters.

The group of 18 players ranks 12th at ESPN, 13th at 247Sports and 11th at Rivals. Brian Kelly has a solid group of three players committed in the 2022 class: offensive tackle Joey Tanona, tight end Jack Nickel and safety Nolan Ziegler.

It has been a bit slow, but with Colzie’s timeline to recommit set and spatula being brought out to flip Johnson, there could be some positive movement for the Irish. Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire for the latest in Notre Dame Football recruiting.
