College football: Former Notre Dame starter transfers to Ohio State

He’ll be reuniting with his brother there, too.

When Notre Dame hosts Ohio State in late September the connections between the two programs will run deep. [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] obviously wore scarlet and gray in college and now heads the Fighting Irish football program.  Meanwhile [autotag]James Laurinaitis[/autotag] recently went from being a graduate assistant at Notre Dame to the same post under Ryan Day at Ohio State.

Add another to the mix as former Notre Dame wide receiver [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], Jr. has announced his next home – none other than Ohio State.  Styles entered the transfer portal the day before Notre Dame’s spring game and announced his decision this weekend.  At Ohio State he’ll be teammates with his younger brother [autotag]Sonny Styles[/autotag] who plays in the Buckeyes secondary.

Styles, Lorenzo that is, is one of 14 players from Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class that is no longer with the program.  He has stated he wants to make the transition to defensive back which will probably be a good idea if he wants to see much of the field as nobody has recruited and developed the receiver position better than Ohio State in recent years.

Notre Dame is set to host Ohio State on Sept. 23.

See some of the best photos of Styles during his time at Notre Dame below.

College football transfer portal: Reaction to Lorenzo Styles leaving Notre Dame

Where will Styles end up? And what does this say about Notre Dame’s young receivers?

A somewhat surprising move happened Friday as Notre Dame rising junior [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag] entered the transfer portal.  Styles played two seasons with the Irish, catching 54 passes for over 700-yards and two touchdowns in blue and gold.

Styles recently moved to corner back and earlier this week stated that he planned to play both offense and defense in the annual Blue-Gold game.  Instead, Styles will no longer be part of the Notre Dame football program.

Although there is always a bit of an surprise feeling when a one-time starter enters the portal, this move is hardly still hardly comes as a shock.  Here is how some of the college football and Notre Dame worlds reacted to the Styles news on Friday.

Notre Dame football: Former starting receiver enters transfer portal

Just a day before the annual spring game, Notre Dame wide receiver Lorenzo Styles is entering the transfer portal.

One of Notre Dame’s more prized wide receiver recruits in recent years is entering the transfer portal.  Rising junior [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], who was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, threw his name in the transfer ring one day before the annual Blue-Gold spring game for Notre Dame.

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag for Styles.  Towards the end of his freshman season it appeared he was going to be a major part of the future for Notre Dame at wide receiver.  His sophomore campaign this past season didn’t see the progress most had hoped for.  Styles caught 30 passes for 340 yards and one touchdown in 2022.  His freshman year saw him haul in 24 receptions for more yards (344) and a score as well.

Last week Styles tried his hand at corner back, something Marcus Freeman discussed.  With the young wide receivers like [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag], [autotag]Rico Flores[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaden Greathouse[/autotag] garnering so much attention this spring, it’s easy to assume that he was being surpassed on the depth chart.

Styles chose Notre Dame over offers from nearly 20 schools including Auburn, Florida, Michigan, and Ohio State (where his younger brother now plays).

Assuming Styles doesn’t exit the portal and return to Notre Dame, his career with the Irish will conclude with him having 58 career touches for 770-yards, and two touchdowns in 22 games.

Notre Dame keeps active in the portal, offers MAC wide receiver

The Irish have their eyes set on a very impressive receiver

One of the best wide receivers that has entered the transfer portal is [autotag]Dante Cephas[/autotag], who played for [autotag]Kent State[/autotag]. The six-foot-one-inch and 186-pound fourth-year junior didn’t quite live up to the impressive 2021 stats he put up but still was a very good target for the Golden Flashes.

During his massive sophomore year, Cephas caught 82 balls for 1,240 yards with 9 touchdowns. Those numbers dropped this year to 48 catches for 744 yards and 3 scores over the course of nine games.

The Irish could have used that kind of production out of any receiver, [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag] led the team with 30 receptions for 340 yards and a score. With that in mind, the Irish pulled the trigger today and offered Cephas a scholarship.

The Irish aren’t the only school that is interested, as just today Cephas was also offered by [autotag]Pittsburgh[/autotag], [autotag]West Virginia[/autotag], [autotag]Penn State[/autotag] and [autotag]Kansas[/autotag]. It’s a bit too early to know what Cephas intends to do, but the Irish have now put their hat into the ring.

Should Chicago’s college football team try poaching another from Chicago’s Big Ten team?

Should Chicago’s college football team try to poach another from Chicago’s Big Ten team?

Notre Dame doesn’t use the transfer portal like Lincoln Riley and USC, as the Trojans have become college football’s version of shopping on Black Friday.  The end result may be great but the process in getting there makes you want to vomit.

Notre Dame has been known to pick their spots in the portal, however.  We’ve been tracking all the quarterbacks who enter the portal for obvious reasons, but a compelling non-quarterback entered Tuesday.  It’s especially compelling for Notre Dame because it’s a program just down the road that the Irish have poached a couple of talents from in recent years.

Malik Washington was Northwestern’s leading receiver this past season and entered the portal Tuesday.  He’s listed at 5-9, 180 pounds and although nobody would describe him as a burner, he consistently makes plays on the ball.  It should also be noted that perhaps no Power Five team has had less production from their quarterbacks in the past two seasons.

Washington hauled in 65 receptions for 694 yards (10.7 avg) this year, the sixth-highest total in the entire Big Ten.  He did find the end zone just once but then again, Northwestern threw for just 10 touchdowns all year.

Notre Dame had massive receiver issues this season as a sophomore [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag] was the only one to amass 300 yards.  If it wasn’t [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] chances are it wasn’t getting done in the passing game and the group of receivers would certainly use some help and experience.

Wide receivers coach [autotag]Chansi Stuckey[/autotag] has the cavalry coming but counting on several underclassmen is a risk I certainly wouldn’t prefer taking.  Growth and development will help Styles, [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag], [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag], and the incoming freshman group, but it would certainly be nice to have some proven veteran experience as well and Washington would accomplish that.

And heck, [autotag]Ara Parseghian[/autotag], [autotag]Ben Skowronek[/autotag], and [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag] all worked out alright so why not do it again?

Let’s get wild, week 9: Statistical predictions for Notre Dame vs Syracuse

Which stats do you think help the Irish get a win today?

Although Syracuse isn’t a traditional power, they still boast a very quality team this fall. Their lone loss was last week to an undefeated Clemson squad, which didn’t really give a blueprint for how to beat the Orange. The Irish will have to do it their way and here are some stats that could help Notre Dame get another road upset victory against a ranked opponent.

Five stars: The best and worst performances in Notre Dame’s loss to Stanford

That was pretty disappointing

More head hanging for the Irish players and fans this year, it’s been a rough one. For the third time this year, the Irish dropped a game, after six they’re even at 3-3. It been one to forget, that’s for sure.

There was not much good tonight, but surprisingly there is a five star, but not due to any individual on this team. There were plenty of terrible play tonight, and find out what the five star, best, was and one star, worst, performances for Notre Dame tonight.

Bye week wishes: What Notre Dame hopefully was working on

What do you think the Irish should have been working on these past two weeks?

Bye weeks are the worst, any momentum gained over the past few weeks seems like it can be lost. For Notre Dame, they finally started to get back to their winning ways, consecutive victories against California and North Carolina. The good part about bye weeks is that teams can now self-scout. Yes, the wins weren’t perfect so there was plenty for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his first Notre Dame team to work on. Here are a few things that I hope they tried to correct since last hitting the playing field.

The five plays that loomed large in Notre Dame’s win over UNC

Which plays stood out to you in the Irish’s win?

The Irish went into Chapel Hill, North Carolina and stopped another high-powered offense. This time the Notre Dame offense kept their end of the bargain and out-scored a statistically very good North Carolina offense. Not all the scoring plays were big and here are the five plays that ultimately helped Notre Dame defeat North Carolina.

Twitter reacts to Audric Estime’s go-ahead touchdown before halftime

Notre Dame has found itself trading touchdowns with North Carolina. It’s a little surprising given how little success the Irish have had on offense for the first month of the season, but we’ll take it. The question is whether they can survive a blow-for-blow game for 60 minutes. The answer to that will come soon enough.

After a game-tying score by [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], the Irish took the lead on a 30-yard play-action touchdown pass from [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag]. The Tar Heels responded quickly when Drake Maye hit J.J. Jones for a 43-yard reception to the Notre Dame 3-yard line, then found Josh Downs for his second touchdown of the game three players later. The game wouldn’t stay tied for long as a series of big runs and a couple of nice passes got the Irish to the 1. It was from there that [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] ran into the end zone to put the Irish back in front.

The Irish made the lead 24-14 on a 40-yard field goal from [autotag]Blake Grupe[/autotag], but here’s how Twitter reacted to the go-ahead score:
