5 Wildcats Alabama fans should get to know ahead of Sugar Bowl matchup

5 Kansas State Wildcats that Alabama fans should know about.

It was announced on Sunday that the Alabama Crimson Tide would be facing the Big 12 champs, the Kansas State Wildcats in the 89th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31.

While the disappointment may still be fresh on the mind of Alabama football fans about missing out on the College Football Playoffs, making it to a New Year’s six bowl game is nothing to hang your head about.

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Crimson Tide now have just one more opportunity to show what this version of Alabama can do on the gridiron.

Since the Wildcats are not a traditional powerhouse and it’s likely that not many Alabama fans are familiar with their roster, I thought it was a good time for Tide fans to get to know some of Kansas State’s best players.

Let’s roll!

TCU stays undefeated with win over Texas: Big 12 Power Rankings after week 11

How do this week’s Big 12 power rankings look after week 11 action?

The Big 12’s College Football Playoff hopes stayed alive with TCU’s impressive road win over the Texas Longhorns.

It wasn’t an impressive margin of victory, but its ability to slow Bijan Robinson was impressive. The offense is what helped the Horned Frogs get to 9-0, but it was the defense that gave them their 10th win.

They held Texas to 199 total yards and 28 net rushing yards in the game. If they can get consistent defensive efforts from that side of the ball, they’ll be hard to beat in Big 12 play and should cement themselves as a College Football Playoff team in a month.

They stayed at No. 1 in this week’s power rankings, but what about the rest of the Big 12?

Big 12 power rankings: TCU rolls in Morgantown, Cowboys trounced by Kansas State

TCU continues to roll and Oklahoma State fell flat in week nine against Kansas State. How did this week’s Big 12 power rankings turn out? from @john9williams

After nine weeks of play, there’s a clear frontrunner for the Big 12 title after the TCU Horned Frogs stayed undefeated in their win over the West Virginia Mountaineers. Though it was just West Virginia, this is the same team that put 43 points up on the Baylor Bears two weeks ago before falling flat against Texas Tech last week.

While TCU stayed the course, Oklahoma State was crushed by Kansas State, who rebounded nicely after their first Big 12 loss a week ago to TCU. Will Howard was in complete control and the Wildcats defense played their best game of the season, shutting down Spencer Sanders and an explosive Oklahoma State offense.

The Big 12 has been an entertaining league through the first nine weeks of the season and the final stretch will provide a lot of drama for the conference on the way to Arlington. Let’s take a look at this week’s Big 12 power rankings.

Predicting which Big 12 quarterbacks may transfer if they lose the starting job

These Big 12 quarterbacks could be on the move if they lose their position battle this offseason.

There are three things certain in life: death, taxes, and college quarterbacks transferring after losing out on the starting job.

This offseason was a prime example of the newfound era of quarterback movement, whether it be to follow a coach, or to go to a school where they wouldn’t be buried on the depth chart. While it may have been a tad more extreme this offseason, with some of the best quarterbacks in the nation transferring due to the insane amount of movement on the coaching carousel, it will still be a common sight to see quarterbacks move on.

Unlike almost every other position on the field, there is only one quarterback on the field, and most teams hate to rotate quarterbacks. This leads to quarterbacks, especially the ones who have been waiting their turn, to look elsewhere for a chance to win the starting job somewhere else.

This is something that we very well could see a lot of around the Big 12 in the coming months after or even during spring ball, when the depth chart starts to shape up. There are multiple schools that will have a quarterback battle on their hands, and many experienced quarterbacks will likely go elsewhere should they lose out.

Here are some of the players who I believe will be transfer portal candidates if they lose the starting job this offseason.

12 Kansas State players to know ahead of matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners

Get ready for Oklahoma’s matchup with Kansas State by getting to know these 12 Wildcats ahead of Saturday’s game.

When the Oklahoma Sooners kickoff Saturday’s game with the Kansas State Wildcats, they’ll be looking to avenge losses from each of the last two seasons. In 2019, it was their only blemish heading into the College Football Playoff. In 2020, the loss attempted to derail their Big 12 title defense.

The Sooners recovered and won the Big 12, but their back-to-back losses to Kansas State continue to hang over their head. Is this the year Lincoln Riley overcomes Chris Klieman in an intriguing Big 12 matchup?

Kansas State is once again a solid team. There are still some questions as to who will play quarterback. After sources indicated Skylar Thompson might play earlier in the week, Chris Klieman stated it was unlikely he would play. Tim Fitzgerald of GoPowercats on 247Sports still leaves some possibility that Thompson could play, but also leaves quite a bit of doubt in his update yesterday.

If Thompson is unable to play Kansas State will likely go with Will Howard as well as Jaren Lewis.

The biggest threat is running back Deuce Vaughn who our own Bryant Crews discussed in this profile ahead of Saturday’s matchup. If the Sooners can slow him down, then they’ll have a great chance at slowing down the Kansas State offense.

Let’s dig deeper than Deuce and get you ready for this pivotal Big 12 matchup by taking a look at six Kansas State players on offense and six on defense you should know.

2 Sooners to watch on defense in Week 5

2 Sooners who will be critical to the defensive effort in week 5

Whether or not Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson plays tomorrow, Oklahoma can still expect a big game from its pash rush. The Wildcats’ offensive line has surrendered 13 sacks against Thompson and backup quarterbacks Will Howard and Jaren Lewis through four games.

Oklahoma State shut down K-State’s passing attack in week four, limiting Lewis and Howard to just 198 total yards with a touchdown and an interception. The OSU defense recorded one interception, two sacks, and nine quarterback hurries against the reserve signal-callers.

If OSU could generate that much pressure against K-State, there is no reason to believe Oklahoma and its no. 1 ranked pass rush isn’t capable of doing the same thing. That’s why Perrion Winfrey is critical to a win in Manhatten.

The Wildcats succumbed to multiple interior pass rushes last week. That should serve as a green light for Winfrey to force his way through the center of the offensive line and dirty up the jersey of whoever the Wildcats roll out at quarterback. He was the only Sooner to register a sack against a stout West Virginia offense last weekend, and he should find his job much easier tomorrow.

But in order for Perrion Winfrey, Nik Bonitto, and the rest of the OU pass rush to key in on the quarterback, Kansas State must first become one-dimensional.

Brian Asamoah made a big impact in the ground game last week. He neutralized Leddie Brown, never allowing the running back more than three yards from scrimmage, and finished with a team-high nine tackles. Another big game is needed from the junior linebacker tomorrow when he faces the dangerous Deuce Vaughn.

A sophomore running back from Texas, Vaughn is the only certified game-changer on the Wildcats’ roster. He’s shifty, explosive, and is a master at breaking tackles by dropping his pad level.

But if Asamoah can help bottle up Vaughn, who accounts for 7 of K-State’s 13 touchdowns by himself, then OU’s defense is primed for another dominant outing.

LSU Tigers among top 12 vying for 2023 No. 1 OT Kadyn Proctor

LSU Tigers among top 12 for 2023 No. 1 offensive tackle.

Based on how the offensive line has performed over the last season and into this year, it is clear the team needs help in the trenches. Current right tackle Austin Deculus is in his final season with the Tigers, what is the future plan? The team does have five-star offensive tackle Will Campbell pledged to join in 2022.

Looking towards 2023, LSU was mentioned among the top schools for the No. 1 offensive tackle in the country, Kadyn Proctor of Des Moines. He will be in attendance for the Iowa-Iowa State game this coming weekend. Those two schools are in the running for his commitment. They are likely in the driver’s seat given they are in-state.

Other schools in the running with LSU are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas A&M from the SEC. Future SEC schools Oklahoma and Texas are on his top list. Clemson, Notre Dame, and Ohio State round out the list. Proctor hasn’t scheduled a visit to Baton Rouge at this point in the process.

No timetable has been set to narrow down his list further.
