The New Orleans Saints brought up three players from their practice squad before their prime-time game with the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving, while also bringing back a player they previously released. But one name you won’t see on the field is wide receiver Malcolm Perry, the former Naval Academy quarterback-turned-Dolphins and Patriots receiver who signed with their practice squad this week. He needs more time to get game-ready.

Here’s what you need to know:

The New Orleans Saints completed a series of last-minute roster moves before kickoff with the Titans, signing practice squad wide receiver Kevin White to the 53-man list while losing starting defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to injured reserve. A handful of other players have been activated for Week 10’s road game in Tennessee. Here’s everything you need to know:

The pectoral muscle injury that knocked Andrus Peat out of Monday night’s win over the Seattle Seahawks resulted in what’s very likely to be season-ending surgery for the three-time Pro Bowler, who was placed on injured reserve Saturday. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reported that Peat underwent surgery on Friday. We don’t know the severity of his injury but anything requiring surgery typically needs a six-month recovery, if not longer. At any rate Peat has a months-long recovery ahead of him, so let’s wish good health for him after a disappointing end to his season.

Look for second-year pro Calvin Throckmorton to continue to fill in at that spot, moving from right guard (where he started most of five games when Cesar Ruiz replaced Erik McCoy at center) to the other side of the starting lineup. He played 57 snaps at left guard against Seattle after Peat’s injury. Behind him are practice squad guards Forrest Lamp and Will Clapp, as well as veterans Caleb Benenoch and Jordan Mills (who can play both guard and tackle).

Let’s hope Peat enjoys a full recovery. Injuries have been a problem for him throughout his career, ranging from concussions to broken bones and sprained joints. His body has taken a lot of punishment. He’ll turn 28 on Nov. 4 and is under contract through 2024. With that injury history and a 2022 salary cap hit of $15.45 million in 2022, fifth-highest on the team, something has to change next summer.

Will Clapp returns to Saints practice squad among latest roster moves

Will Clapp returns to Saints practice squad among latest roster moves

Thursday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire listed several roster moves for the New Orleans Saints, most of which have to deal with their practice squad. A couple of players who were waived before New Orleans’ Week 7 game with the Seattle Seahawks are back in the fold ahead of Week 8’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here is what you need to know:

The New Orleans Saints added a couple of players to the mix for this week’s game roster, bringing up two veterans from the practice squad while activating another from injured reserve, per the daily NFL transactions wire.

That puts them at 52 of 53 spots filled (practice squad elevations don’t count towards it), suggesting more players are working towards returning from injured reserve in the days ahead.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants added to their too-thin receiving corps by calling up John Ross from injured reserve. New York is down two of its top three receivers (Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton) so he could lend a hand.

Here’s the latest Saints roster moves:

Saints designate OL Will Clapp to return from injured reserve

Will Clapp is the first Saints player designated to return from injured reserve, while others including Tre’Quan Smith and Wil Lutz remain out of action:

The New Orleans Saints reported just one roster move on the daily NFL transactions wire: offensive lineman Will Clapp has been designated to return from injured reserve. He has 21 days to practice and be activated to the 53-man roster before he reverts back to the reserve list.

His return could come at a critical time for the Saints offense. They’re still down starting center Erik McCoy (calf) and will be without left tackle Terron Armstead (elbow) for some time, though Clapp’s own injury remains undisclosed.

There are other players who are also eligible to be designated for return, but so far they are still listed on injured reserve: wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, cornerback Ken Crawley, tight end Nick Vannett, and kicker Wil Lutz. Keep an eye out for status changes for each of them.

In the meantime, the Saints have a group of guards that include Andrus Peat and Calvin Throckmorton on the active roster, with starting right guard Cesar Ruiz pulling double-duty at center. The practice squad can call up Austin Reiter, Caleb Benenoch, Derrick Kelly, and Jordan Mills if needed. Reiter has already seen two game-day elevations this season, so the Saints must sign him to the 53-man roster if they want him to dress out for another game.

Clapp, a 25-year-old LSU Tigers product and 2018 NFL draft pick, has appeared in 25 games with New Orleans (four starts). He was re-signed to a one-year deal earlier this summer after testing the waters in free agency.

Things are picking up with the Saints, who have re-signed offensive lineman Will Clapp ESPN’s Field Yates first reported the news which was confirmed on the daily NFL transactions wire. A seventh round pick out of LSU in 2018, Clapp has appeared in 26 games with the Saints (including one playoffs matchup) with four career starts; he’s totaled 479 snaps on offense and 177 reps on special teams during that span.

Expect him to compete with recently-added Tulane center Christian Montano for the No. 2 center job, with either Erik McCoy (the incumbent) or Cesar Ruiz (the Saints’ 2020 first round pick) battling for the starting gig. Other candidates for the reserve role include Derrick Kelly and Calvin Throckmorton.

Clapp got on fans’ radar by being waived and re-signed on almost a weekly basis early last season, frequently bouncing to and from the practice squad while the Saints filed various roster moves. But his five transactions are nowhere close to the high score practice squad wideout Andy Tanner set back in the day (29), though backup quarterback J.T. Barrett nearly met it (28) before he caught on with the Seahawks.

Backup lineman Will Clapp tests positive for COVID-19 before Saints vs. Bucs

New Orleans Saints center Will Clapp tested positive for COVID-19 before kickoff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”Av2B04WyNZ-1111261-7498″]

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Friday evening that New Orleans Saints backup center Will Clapp tested positive for COVID-19, ruling him out for Sunday’s Divisional Round matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Saints immediately went through contact tracing protocol and found no high-risk close contacts near Clapp; Pelissero added Saturday morning that no playoff teams received additional positive test results, meaning New Orleans appears to have avoided an outbreak.

That’s a different scenario from where they were just two weeks ago, when star running back Alvin Kamara tested positive for the coronavirus and sidelined the entire running backs corps as high-risk close contacts. Fortunately, they were able to slide Ty Montgomery into the role (he spent most of the week in wide receivers meetings, avoiding close contact with Kamara and the others) and he ran for 100-plus rushing yards for the second time in his career.

But we aren’t out of the woods just yet. There’s another round of testing to be completed before Sunday’s kickoff, and it’s possible a last-minute positive result takes someone out of action against Tampa Bay. So we’ll be remaining cautiously optimistic right up until the opening whistle. That’s just part of playing football in a pandemic.

Saints call up two practice squad receivers as COVID-19 replacements

The New Orleans Saints promoted 3 players from their practice squad for Week 7 against the Panthers, including Juwan Johnson and Will Clapp.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”dNPaG9spT7-1012639-7498″]

Both wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and cornerback Ken Crawley were placed on the COVID-19 reserve list this week, prompting the New Orleans Saints to promote a pair of wide receivers from the practice squad: veteran Austin Carr and rookie Juwan Johnson. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported the roster moves.

Per an NFL rules tweak, these will not count against each other player for future promotions (the new CBA allows for two practice squad call-ups per player each season). Because they are filling in for teammates on COVID-19 reserve, both players are granted a temporary exemption. Carr has already had one game-week promotion so he is still allowed one more, while Johnson retains both of his future opportunities.

Johnson was signed by the Saints as an undrafted rookie out of Oregon, where the 6-foot-4, 231 pounder struggled to stay healthy after transferring from Penn State. He impressed with his blocking in training camp and was quickly signed to the practice squad after roster cuts.

Additionally, the Saints signed backup guard Will Clapp to the 53-man roster after losing wide receiver Bennie Fowler to injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Clapp has been signed, released, and re-signed six times this year as he bounces between the practice squad and active roster.

And the Saints may not be finished yet. They can call up two more practice squad players as typical game-day roster additions, but they could wait until pregame warmups on Sunday to decide whether more help is needed. So stay tuned for updates.

Saints waive Will Clapp again days after signing him to the active roster

The New Orleans Saints have signed, waived, and re-signed offensive lineman Will Clapp 4 times in two weeks as they shuffle the roster.

[jwplayer oeFtsHs2-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints reported just two moves on the daily NFL transactions wire Thursday: the signing of wide receiver Tommylee Lewis to their practice squad and the waiving of offensive lineman Will Clapp from the 53-man roster.

This comes just days after Clapp was signed to the roster from the practice squad, which was preceded by him first being waived on Sept. 26. That’s kind of tough to follow, so here’s the timeline laid out a little more clearly:

So he’s been moved on and off of the team four times in the last two weeks (give or take a day). The Saints practice squad is back to its 16-man capacity (cornerback Ken Crawley and tight end Garrett Griffin reverted to it after being called up for Week 4’s game with the Detroit Lions), so it’s not immediately certain that Clapp will return. But this does suggest there’s a pattern to his transactions as the Saints work within the limits of NFL roster rules.

It’s familiar territory for them. The Saints signed, waived, and re-signed practice squad quarterback J.T. Barrett 28 times from May 2018 to October 2019, which came up just short of former wideout Andy Tanner’s record (having been involved with 29 Saints roster moves from 2011 to 2015). Clapp is someone they’re comfortable dressing for games in a pinch, but also a player the Saints trust can pass through waivers uncontested. We’ll see if the gamble pays off or if his time is already up in New Orleans.

Depending on how the Thursday injury report shakes out, Clapp’s services may no longer be needed. Left guard Andrus Peat is working to return from injury and veteran backup James Hurst just came off the NFL suspended list. They have other reserves like Cameron Tom and Calvin Throckmorton waiting on the practice squad, and a group of four free agent linemen went through a tryout earlier this week. So it’s possible that this is it for Clapp, but we won’t be shocked if he returns soon enough.
