Jets release OL Caleb Benenoch

Benenoch only lasts a few weeks with the Jets.

The Jets released offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch among their cuts to trim their roster to 80.

Benenoch only lasted a few weeks with the Jets. He came on board shortly after Mekhi Becton suffered a season-ending knee injury along with the injury to Conor McDermott.

With the releases of Benenoch and Isaiah Williams, the Jets have 13 offensive linemen remaining on the roster. Likely at least three or four more will be cut among the final cuts next week, as teams set their 53-man rosters.

The Jets got a good look at their reserve offensive line Monday night against the Falcons, so it was simply a numbers game with Benenoch, especially after the Jets signed Duane Brown.

Jets add veteran OL Caleb Benenoch

The New York Jets have added some depth on the offensive line, adding a veteran that has played multiple positions on the line.

The New York Jets have added a veteran offensive lineman in light of the recent injuries to tackles Mekhi Becton and Conor McDermott. But it’s not who you think it is, or who Jets fans wish it should have been.

The Jets signed offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch to a one-year deal Monday, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Benenoch is entering his seventh NFL season and joining his eighth NFL team. After being drafted by the Buccaneers in 2016, Benenoch has also spent time with the Patriots, Panthers, Cowboys, Lions, Bills and Saints.

Benenoch has appeared in 36 games in his career with 23 starts, including starting all 16 games for the Buccaneers in 2018 and one game with the Saints in 2021.

As The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt points out, Benenoch has played left guard, right guard and right tackle, but most of his time has been at guard.

The Jets saw Becton go down with a knee injury during practice Monday, but the injury doesn’t appear to be serious. McDermott is out for 1-2 weeks with a low ankle sprain.

The New Orleans Saints brought up three players from their practice squad before their prime-time game with the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving, while also bringing back a player they previously released. But one name you won’t see on the field is wide receiver Malcolm Perry, the former Naval Academy quarterback-turned-Dolphins and Patriots receiver who signed with their practice squad this week. He needs more time to get game-ready.

Here’s what you need to know:

Buffalo Bills sign OL Caleb Benenoch

#Bills sign OL Caleb Benenoch:

The Buffalo Bills have signed some depth to their O-line. Offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch has signed on the dotted line with the team on Wednesday.

Benenoch had a workout with the Bills on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old was a fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2016 and played four years with the team. Benenoch has also spent time with the Patriots, Panthers, Cowboys and Lions mostly via practice squads and training camp appearances.

Between his college and pro career, Benenoch has a Bills trigger word attached to his name: Versatile. He has experience playing both at guard and tackle.

After starting 16 games in 2018 where he graded a 44.8 mark via Pro Football Focus with the Bucs, Benenoch has since only appeared in one NFL game.

In 2019, Benenoch did previously have a workout with the Bills, but the team did not sign him at that time.

The Bills had a workout with Benenoch on the same day where the team announced that offensive lineman Jon Feliciano did not practice due to a sore shoulder.

Along with Feliciano, offensive lineman Forrest Lamp and Marquel Harrell also missed that sixth practice of training camp. Dion Dawkins and Ike Boettger did as well as their spell on the Reserve/COVID-19 list continues, however, they are expected back at practice this week.

The Bills had an open roster spot so signing Benenoch did not require a corresponding move.

Steelers tryouts: Former Bucs guard gets a look in Pittsburgh

The Steelers continued their quest for a guard in Tuesday tryouts.

The Steelers continued their quest for a guard on Tuesday. After bringing a slew of players in for tryouts on Monday — including guard Andrew Dickinson — the Steelers kicked the tires on offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch.

A fifth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, Benenoch started all 16 games at right guard in 2018. After his release in 2019, he bounced around the league with the Patriots, Panthers, Cowboys and Lions. Detroit released him on Aug. 23.

The UCLA product played primarily at tackle for UCLA

The knee injury rookie guard Kevin Dotson suffered last week could possibly be more significant than head coach Mike Tomlin has led on. Though Dotson has been observing practices from the sidelines, he has yet to participate since Aug. 18.

Lions sign DE Will Clarke and release OG Caleb Benenoch

Clarke was a 3rd round pick by the Bengals in 2014

The Detroit Lions announced a personnel change at the bottom of the roster just prior to Sunday’s practice session in Allen Park. The team signed free agent defensive end Will Clarke.

Clarke worked out for the team earlier this week and passed through the COVID-19 protocols to get cleared to sign. The 29-year-old veteran last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2018 season. He has notched seven sacks and 37 tackles in 53 career games with the Buccaneers and Bengals, who drafted him in the third round back in 2014 out of West Virginia.

To make room for Clarke, the Lions waived veteran offensive guard Caleb Benenoch.

Connor Williams to IR, Cowboys sign journeyman OL to round out roster

The Dallas Cowboys will have to make the miracle  run owner Jerry Jones desperately wants to believe is possible without their starting offensive line intact. Left guard Connor Williams, who missed the team’s Week 11 win over the Detroit Lions after arthroscopic knee surgery but returned after just one missed week is done for the year.

Williams tore his ACL in the Thanksgiving loss to the Buffalo Bills and on Sunday, Dallas placed the second-year player on injured reserve, ending his season. The designation opened up a spot on the team’s 53-man roster and the club signed versatile offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch to fill the void.

Williams will have surgery something in the month of December and as of now his readiness for the team’s offseason work is unknown.

Benenoch has spent time on three different NFL rosters prior to this, having been drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 selection process by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He actually worked out for the Cowboys during that process.

The Nigeria native started all three seasons at UCLA playing both right tackle and the guard positions. At 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, he’s an exceptionally quick athlete.

The Cowboys had hoped to be better prepared for such an injury, when they drafted Penn State guard Connor McGovern in the third round of this year’s draft, but after missing training camp the Cowboys placed him on IR after he made the team’s initial 53-man roster.

That move would have allowed him to recover from his pectoral injury and be activated at some point after eight weeks, but with him missing such a large part of the offense’s installation, it does not appear the team has any thoughts toward activating him down the stretch of the season.

Xavier Su’a-Filo, a six-year veteran, will start in Williams’ place.
