NFL officially expands playoffs to 14 teams after owners approve new format

NFL officially expands playoffs to 14 teams after a vote by league owners

The NFL is all about excitement and expansion, so after a vote by league owners, the playoffs will get two extra teams.

In a move that has been discussed for weeks now, the playoffs will expand to 14 teams in the new format, with two extra teams now and just one team from each conference securing a first-round bye.

The playoffs will continue to feature the four division winners in each conference as well as three wild card teams in each conference. The team with the No. 1 seed will earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and the only bye week.

Wild Card weekend will include six games, with six division winners hosting six wild card teams, in three games played on Saturday and three games played on Sunday.

According to a release from the league, CBS and NBC will now broadcast the additional playoff game that’ll be added to Wild Card Weekend.

6 Best bets for NFL wild-card weekend

Are the Patriots done? Can the Bills win outright? The Saints should defend homefield, but what will happen in Seattle-Philadelphia?

We did it! We ended the regular season over .500 — and I bet you thought I was going to say we made it to wild-card weekend. A 6-3 record — and hitting on two parlays — helped save the season and now it’s time to keep the hot streak going into the playoffs.

Playoffs best bets are a bit different than the normal best bets during the regular season. We will bet on every single game. If there’s a total we like, we will take it, but there will be at least four game bets/picks.

As usual, the home teams are in CAPS, and we are using Bet MGM for our odds. Games will be listed at -110 unless denoted otherwise.

Seahawks opposing QB preview: Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz

The Seattle Seahawks will get another look at Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Carson Wentz when the teams square off in the wild-card round.

For the fourth time this year, the Seahawks will play a rematch game against a quarterback and team they faced earlier in the season. The first three were all divisional games, now they will take on the Philadelphia Eagles and Carson Wentz in the first round of the postseason.

When these two teams played each other back in late November, it was hardly a memorable affair for Wentz and the Eagles. The Seahawks dominated defensively, as Seattle won 17-9 with Philadelphia only scoring one touchdown in the final minute of garbage time.

It was a particularly rough outing for Wentz. The former North Dakota State standout did complete 33 of 45 passes, but for only 256 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and three fumbles – two of which were lost.

Wentz has been playing with a short deck as all his top receiving options are either on the injured reserve or have missed significant time with various injuries as well. However, it somehow has not stopped Wentz from performing as he has seemingly spun straw into gold.

On the year, Wentz has thrown 27 touchdowns to only seven interceptions for 4,039 yards. In fact, Wentz has become the first player in NFL history to have 4,000 plus yards without a single receiver having at least 500 yards.

I’m not even sure how that math adds up.

Since losing to the Seahawks, Wentz has thrown 10 touchdowns against only one interception, while leading the Eagles to a 4-1 record and an NFC East championship.

Although Wentz has had turnover problems in the past, and especially against Seattle, he has been playing clean football for well over a month straight. The Seahawks will have to get back to forcing turnovers like they were for the majority of the season if they want to avoid another one-and-done trip to the playoffs.

Oddsmakers: Bills open as slight underdog vs. Texans

Buffalo Bills are slight underdogs vs. the Houston Texans on Wild Card weekend.

The Bills are onto the playoffs and can keep their 2019 season mantra going into it.

On Saturday at 4:35 p.m. the Bills will visit the Houston Texans, the AFC South champions, for their Wild Card weekend outing. They’ll do so as underdogs.

According to BetMGM, the Texans open at three-point favorites over the Bills.

The spread isn’t exactly the most disrespectful one, though. Oddsmakers typically give the home team a three-point edge in games. So had the game been at New Era Field, the game could be considered a toss-up. Both teams enter the game with a 10-6 overall record.

But the road could be a comfortable spot for the Bills, who had a 6-2 record during their games away from Orchard Park this season.

The moneyline sits at Bills (+145) and Texans (-165). The over/ under is 41, the lowest of any game on Wild Card weekend.
