Jared Goff beat the Buccaneers in Week 6, and he can do it again

The Buccaneers threw everything at Jared Goff in Week 6, and Goff had no problems. Might be time for a different plan in the playoffs.

In the locker room after the Detroit Lions’ 24-23 wild-card win over the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Dan Campbell wanted everyone to know that he was more than fine with the 2021 trade with the Rams that flipped Goff for Matthew Stafford.

There was no question in that game who Campbell trusted to make the final play that sealed the game for his team.

The Lions placed their ultimate faith in Jared Goff, and it absolutely paid off

Now, the Lions are hoping to make it to the NFC Championship game, and they’ll have to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to do so. Goff will likely be a major component of that equation. When these two teams faced off in Week 6, the Lions ran the ball 22 times… for 40 yards and no touchdowns. Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs was unavailable for that game, and he’ll be ready to go for this one, but it’s not a guarantee that any team will do well against Tampa Bay’s run defense.

Detroit’s 20-6 win was keyed by a defense that frustrated Baler Mayfield over and over, and Goff’s performance. He completed 30 of 44 passes for 353 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 107.5. Buccaneers head coach and defensive shot-caller Todd Bowles is great at designing different and effective blitzes, and disguised coverages, but Goff had no issue with any of it. Perhaps more than any other game this season, this one showed how far Goff has come as a quarterback from a mental perspective.

In that game, Bowles sent five-man rushes on 17 of Goff’s 44 attempts, and he completed 13 of those passes for 9.2 yards per attempt, and 3.7 average yards of separation for his receivers. This 27-yard pass to receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown at the start of the fourth quarter featured two staples of the Lions’ passing game — under-center play-action, and heavy personnel — in this case, two tight ends. This was a five-man rush as opposed to a blitz, but the Bucs also switched from a single-high look to Cover-6, and Goff had no issue whatsoever with that. St. Brown perfectly exposed the void in that coverage switch.

Goff’s 45-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jameson Williams with 3:27 left in the third quarter was another example of Goff’s acuity against a complex defense.

This was a zone exchange in which edge-rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka dropped into flat coverage, and safety Christian Izien rushed from the second level on the other side. At the same time, the Buccaneers showed a nebulous coverage look that resembled Cover-4 to a point, but flipped to Cover-3 post-snap. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. came down to cover receiver Josh Reynolds, making Ryan Neal the deep-third defender.

The Lions had a great plan for either coverage with a flood concept out of trips right in which Reynolds, Jameson Williams, and Amon-Ra St. Brown worked all three levels of the field with out-breaking routes. Williams had Neal beaten on the deep route, cornerback Carlton Davis was confused as to which receiver to cover, and that’s one way to get yourself a 45-yard score.

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys go deeper on what Goff did to the Bucs in Week 6, and why Todd Bowles might want to investigate different parts of his playbook.

The Ravens know they’re dealing with a different C.J. Stroud this time around

The Ravens were able to contain C.J. Stroud in Week 1 of the regular season, but they know they’re dealing with a different Stroud in the divisional round.

We all know now that Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is one of the most remarkable rookies ever to play his position in professional football. But Stroud’s NFL debut had its rocky moments. Let’s take you back to Week 1 of the 2023 season, when Stroud had to face the Baltimore Ravens’ multi-faceted defense in Baltimore.

The Ravens won, 25-9, and Stroud completed 28 of 44 passes for 242 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 78.0. Stroud took five sacks. He was pressured on 25 of his 54 dropbacks, completing 11 of 17 passes for 78 yards. He attempted two passes of 20 or more air yards, completing neither. And play-action wasn’t a strength at that point, as Stroud completed four of eight play-action passes for… 26 yards.

“Honestly, just really the little things,” Stroud said after that game, when asked what he learned from the experienced. “It was football at the end of the day. Just getting out of the huddle, getting the plays clean, getting guys lined up and getting the play clock, things like that. I think those are the things that kind of hindered us a little bit. And then, just being more efficient in the red zone. So those are things I would definitely get better on.”

Yeah… so far, so good. Since Week 2 of the regular season, and including his demolition of the Cleveland Browns’ top-ranked defense in the wild-card round, Stroud has become the NFL’s most efficient deep passer, with 35 deep completions in 59 attempts for a league-high 1,213 yards, nine touchdowns, no interceptions, and a league-high passer rating of 143.2. With play-action, he’s completed 77 of 117 passes for 1,416 yards, 10 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 128.7 — only Brock Purdy (141.0) of the San Francisco 49ers has a better play-action passer rating than Stroud’s. And when under pressure since Week 2, Stroud has completed 71 of 137 passes for 903 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 80.0.

The Ravens have seen more than enough to know that the C.J. Stroud they handled in Week 1 is no longer that guy.

“Well, we were really impressed the first game, too,” defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald said Wednesday. “We knew going into the game that — if you remember me talking about it back then – we didn’t feel like you were going against a rookie at that point. So, you’re just seeing the natural progression over the course of the season just being more comfortable in the system. You can tell the system’s growing around [C.J. Stroud], and they’ve evolved as we have as well. I think that’s what you’re seeing, but [I] definitely have a lot of respect for what they’re doing and how he operates.”

“You would think, but not really,” edge-rusher Odafe Oweh said this week, regarding whether Week 1 will be a guide for anything. “I feel like [the Texans] are a whole different team, [and] C.J.  is a whole different quarterback. I feel like we woke them up, and we matured them, and he’s been balling ever since. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and everything, but I feel like everyone on that team is a little different. In the playoffs, obviously, people play harder, so we’ve got to come with a different energy as well.”

Linebacker Roquan Smith agreed.

“I think they’re definitely improved, but so are we when you look at it. Yes, they do a lot of good things. [No.] 26 [Devin Singletary] is running the ball well. [No.] 7 [C.J. Stroud] is very accurate, and then [No.] 12 [Nico Collins], the receiver, is definitely coming on. The offense is definitely clicking, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. We’re prepared for it, and we’re ready to go to war regardless of who it’s against, and they’re the team that’s coming in here. Business is business handled.”

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys get into how Stroud is different, and what the Ravens will need to do to at least contain him.

2023 First Mock Draft: Post Wild Card

Well that was fun, but holy (bleep) does this next round of the NFL Playoffs look amazing

Even the blowouts – San Francisco over Seattle and Dallas over Tampa Bay – were entertaining in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs.

It would’ve been interesting to see what the Minnesota offense could’ve done at San Francisco, but getting Giants and Eagles with an NFC Championship appearance on the line is special. Dallas at San Francisco? For people of a certain age, that just sounds massive.

Bengals and Bills? This HAD to happen, and let’s go Jaguars – let’s see that attack against Kansas City (and help me with my belief that Jacksonville might be this year’s Cincinnati).

When our game previews come out – after the news of the week happens and there’s even more of a deep dive – these can and might change, but …

2023 NFL Playoffs Divisional Round: Saturday

Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs

Saturday, January 21
NBC, 4:30 ET
GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

First Thought Instant Analysis: We can’t have another No. 1 AFC seed go out right away, can we?

Kansas City is rested, it’s got the weapons that last year’s No. 1 AFC Tennessee didn’t have, and it should be able to take what Justin Herbert and the Chargers did against Jacksonville to another level.

But the Chief defense doesn’t really take the ball away.

That shouldn’t matter since Trevor Lawrence should be good for at least one big mistake on his own, but it really comes down to this …

How fast can Lawrence settle in?

He’s been so hyped and so amped and so off the last few games that he just needs to get off to a decent start and not try to do a gajillion things at once on each play. That, and he needs to read the Chief defense far, far, far better than he did early against the Chargers.

Lawrence will be good, the Jaguar offense will be great, and … Brandon Staley isn’t coaching the Chiefs.

It’ll be a back-and-forth fight with a ton of scoring and a whole lot of big plays, but this week the Jaguars aren’t going to be able to get over the big run from Patrick Mahomes and company coming in the second quarter.

First Thought No Research Prediction: Kansas City 34, Jacksonville 23
Early Line No-Look Guess: Kansas City -7.5
Actual Line: Kansas City -8.5, o/u: 51.5

The NFL playoffs are finally here and the stage is set for an exciting and thrilling journey to crown a Super Bowl champion.

The NFL playoffs are finally here and the stage is set for an exciting and thrilling journey to crown a Super Bowl champion.  In the AFC, the Bills and the Chiefs have consistently been the best in the conference all season, but the Bengals have come on strong of late and Justin Herbert could be a wild card as he makes his first playoff appearance with the Chargers. It’s tough to pinpoint a clear favorite heading into the playoffs, and that’s what makes the NFL so exciting.

The NFC playoff picture is a little murkier this year, with the Eagles having looked like the NFL’s best team for much of the season, but late-season bumps and injuries have thrown the conference into question. The 49ers, Cowboys, and Vikings are all waiting in the wings, ready to take advantage of any opportunity.

11 former Texas Longhorns to watch in the NFL playoffs

Multiple Longhorns will compete for a Super Bowl this postseason.

The Texas Longhorns are sending several players to the NFL playoffs this postseason. Among them are a couple of players new to postseason play.

Cameron Dicker will see his first postseason game for the Los Angeles Chargers. Presumably, the former Longhorns kicker would choose Philadelphia, the team that cut him, to be his Super Bowl opponent should the Chargers make a run.

After scoring his first NFL touchdown, Joseph Ossai is set to experience his first postseason as a key defensive player for Cincinnati. The Bengals made the Super Bowl last season and have all the tools to make it again.

Devin Duvernay headlines the group of injured Longhorns that may not be able to take the field.

Quandre Diggs, Jordan Hicks, Charles Omenihu and Justin Tucker figure to be the safest bets to perform at the highest level. Here’s a look at a few of the Longhorns that will play this weekend.

NFL Playoff Divisional Round First Thought Predictions
San Francisco at Green Bay
Buffalo at Kansas City
Los Angeles or Arizona at Tampa Bay

Let’s just hope that all of that will bring us something wonderful.

Oh sure, Las Vegas made things interesting against Cincinnati at the end, and the world is still waiting for Dallas to finally wake up and start playing against San Francisco, but Tampa Bay over Philadelphia was a dud.

Kansas City over Pittsburgh turned into breathtaking dud. Buffalo over New England became a shocking dud.

Fortunately, here come the killer matchups that should be a whole lot more fun. So what’s going to happen?

As we do for the college side, we go with the first-guess picks and then work from there. Like they tell you in third grade, always go with your first answer.

I don’t look at the lines, guess at what they are, and then add them at the end.

Last year I totally rocked the Wild Card round – 6-0 straight up and 5-1 against the spread – but this time around?  Uhhhhh, as the man said, it’s on to Cincinnati – or, Cincinnati vs Tennessee – going 3-2 both straight up and against the spread with the Rams-Arizona game pending.

When our game previews come out – after the news of the week happens and there’s even more of a deep dive happening – these can and might change, but …

2022 NFL Playoffs Divisional Round: Saturday

4 Cincinnati at 1 Tennessee

Saturday, January 22
CBS, 4:30 ET
Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: Just how healthy is Derrick Henry?

That’s it. That’s everything.

D’Onta Foreman has done a nice job over the back half of the season for the Titans, and the defense has been terrific, but this comes down to whether or not the offense can control the tempo of the game and take the will away from the Cincinnati defense.

The Bengals were great against Las Vegas. Joe Burrow was sharp, Joe Mixon ran well, and the offense popped for over 300 yards in the 26-19 win.

However, there was a stretch in the second half when the Raider offensive line took over and Josh Jacobs was effective enough to change the overall energy of the game. That’s what Henry has to do, and if he can’t get rolling, then it’ll be Foreman.

Originally, the call was that New England was going to roll on into Nashville and grind its way to a win … oops. Cincinnati will get the offense going, but the rested Titans will come back in the second half with the ground game and  fantastic run defense getting this done.

Knee-Jerk No Research Prediction: Tennessee 26, Cincinnati 20
Early Line No-Look Guess: Tennessee -3.5
Actual Line: Tennessee -3.5, o/u: 47

We’re here after a wild and fun regular season – and an all-timer of a finish – with the most wide open NFL playoffs in a long, long time.

Who’s going to win, how will the bracket go, and who’ll win the Super Bowl?

As we do for the college side, we go with the first-guess picks and then work from there. The idea is to go with the first answer, and then adjust from there once we do the game previews and predictions.

2022 NFL Draft First 16 Picks Mock Draft

2022 NFL Playoffs Wild Card Round: Saturday

AFC: 5 Las Vegas Raiders at 4 Cincinnati Bengals

Saturday, January 15
NBC/Peacock, 4:30 pm
Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: Really? You’re going to go against this Las Vegas team that keeps on fighting through the adversity to play with the ultimate Raider swagger?

Yeah, and not just because Cincinnati rolled 32-13 when the two played in Week 11.

The Bengal star power got a week off to get everyone as right as can be, and Las Vegas had the emotional Sunday night game – that extra time will matter just enough. It won’t be the wipeout of earlier in the season, and the Bengals will press way too much, but Joe Burrow will get his first NFL playoff win.

Knee-Jerk No Research Prediction: Cincinnati 30, Las Vegas 23
Early Line No-Look Guess: Cincinnati -7.5
Actual Line: COMING, o/u: COMING

AFC: 6 New England Patriots at 3 Buffalo Bills

Saturday, January 15
CBS/Paramount+, 8:15 pm
Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park, NY

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: It stinks that these two are playing in the Wild Card round. Either one could go on a run and either one would do some damage if they didn’t have to play each other.

Can New England get everything back up to speed? They’ve now lost three of their last four game after the problems against Miami, and before that was the crazy weather game against Buffalo.

You never want to go against Bill Belichick – especially since this is the third time they’ve played in seven weeks – but at home, in front of that crowd, the Buffalo team that’s past the midseason doldrums will rise up against the run. The Patriot defense, placekicking, and coaching will be better.

Knee-Jerk No Research Prediction: New England 19, Buffalo 17
Early Line No-Look Guess: Buffalo -3.5
Actual Line: COMING, o/u: COMING

NFL Playoff Divisional Round First Thought Predictions
Baltimore at Buffalo
Cleveland at Kansas City
Tampa Bay at New Orleans

Well that was a whole big big of fantastic.

The massive expanded NFL Wild Card weekend was outstanding from beginning to end. Even when there was a bit of a dud – (cough) Chicago New Orleans (cough) – it was still relatively entertaining in the glut of all those games that matter.

And now we get even more fun.

Two games Saturday, two games Sunday, and they’re going to be loaded.

Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen headline Saturday night when Baltimore goes to Buffalo, and we get Round 3 of Brady vs. Brees when Tampa Bay goes to New Orleans to end Sunday night.

Oh yeah, and the Rams going to Green Bay on Saturday and Cleveland taking its show to Kansas City on Sunday isn’t bad either.

So what’s going to happen?

As we do this for the college side, we go with the first-guess picks and then work from there. Like they tell you in third grade, always go with your first answer. I don’t look at the lines, guess at what they are, and then add them at the end.

By the way … went 6-0 straight up and 5-1 against the spread when doing this for the Wild Card round.

However, when our game previews come out – after the news of the week happens and there’s even more of a deep dive happening – these can and might change, but …

2021 NFL Playoffs Divisional Round: Saturday

6 Los Angeles Rams at 1 Green Bay Packers

Saturday, January 16
FOX, 4:35 ET
Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: The Rams were able to pull it off against a Seattle team that – for some bizarre reason – thought the answer to not being able to hit third down plays was to keep chucking it deep. Green Bay will be sharper all the way around.

That LA D – No. 1 in the NFL – is obviously amazing, but Aaron Donald is banged up, and as good as that performance against the Seahawks was, that’s not going to be enough to overcome a still-injured Jared Goff.

Green Bay doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter here, but there’s a bigger problem … Green Bay.

It’s still almost a week away, but it’s expected to be around 20ish degrees at game time.

Knee-Jerk No Research Prediction: Green Bay 26, Los Angeles 16
Early Line No-Look Guess: Green Bay -7.5
Actual BetMGM Line: Green Bay -7, o/u: 46
