Crunch, Wham, thank you ma’am, this Bills run game is a damn good plan

The Dallas Cowboys defense has had is struggles against the run in 2019, and coming off of a tough loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, the Cowboys won’t have much time to lick their wounds before suiting up for what is sure to be a challenge in their annual Thanksgiving day contest.

That challenge, comes by the name of the Buffalo Bills, and along with a strong set of ball carriers, including running backs Frank Gore and Devin Singletary,  and quarterback Josh Allen, the scheme designed by offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is top notch. It is multiple in terms of concepts and can be explosive, making it a dangerous attack to defend. It’s a large part of the reason the Bills find themselves at 8-3.

The fact Allen is such a capable runner from the quarterback position helps make the Bills offense one of the best in the league, as they currently rank 8th in the NFL in rushing offense DVOA, but beyond that Daboll does a brilliant job mixing his run schemes to attack opposing defenses.

One such scheme that I’m sure will show up on Thursday afternoon, has popped up a few times on tape this year, and is one that is run across college and the NFL by certain teams, but is not nearly as prevalent as the typical zone runs, or Power G schemes. That is the Influence Wham concept, known in some play books as Crunch.

A typical wham scheme involves the offense picking one player on the defensive front who the offensive line will leave unblocked, essentially baiting them up the field while the offensive linemen climb to the second level.

That defensive lineman, usually a tackle, gets the free access to the backfield and might believe he is going to have a chance to make a big play.

But just as they clear into the backfield, WHAM, an offensive player coming across the formation. Often a tight end or a guard from the opposite side will deliver a shot to the defender, knocking him out of the hole and clearing a path for the running back to get to the second level. Here, there’s a lineman up blocking a linebacker, and the ball carrier can quickly accelerate and make a big play.

What makes Crunch different from the typical wham play is that it features, not one or two, but three wham blocks, meaning almost the entire defensive line gets trapped and whammed, while the offensive linemen have free access to the linebackers and defensive backs down the field.

On this play from the Bills’ Week 10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, Daboll dials up Crunch with some pre-snap window dressing.

The compressed formation forces the outside linebacker to that side to play a step wider than he usually would, and the jet motion generates a reaction from the linebackers.

At the snap both offensive tackles block down hard and the center immediately fires to the second level. The gap-exchange run blitz by No. 51 Mack Wilson actually causes a mix up in the execution for the Bills, and the right tackle blocks the defensive tackle to his side expecting the guard from the opposite side to hit the first color that flashes in front of him. But the guard is running his track to the defensive tackle and reacts too late, allowing Wilson into the back field.

Because Singletary is so talented with the ball in his hands, and because the Bills block up the front side of this play so well, he is able to turn it into a decent gain and help the Bills stay in front of the chains and on schedule for their offense.

Against a team like Dallas, with their fast and athletic defenders who are famous for flying up the field in a hurry,Crunch is almost certain to make an appearance on Coach Daboll’s call sheet, and if the Cowboys defensive linemen don’t stay gap sound, and if their linebackers can’t get off of the blocks to make the tackles, Singletary and Gore will put up big numbers against this Cowboys defense.

The races for all of the divisions outside of the NFC South are heating up. The Cowboys and Eagles both have shots at winning the East. The Packers and Vikings have the same record and a game against each other. The Seahawks won’t go away even as the Niners continue to dominate every opponent — outside of Seattle. Of course, the wild card race is kind of finished since the Seahawks and Vikings are probably locked in.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys 6-5

Dallas is suffering from their coaching and not their talent. Now they enter a pretty tough stretch of their schedule starting with a Thanksgiving matchup against the Bills on short rest. The Week 16 game against the Eagles could end up deciding which team takes the east.

Remaining Games: Bills, @Bears, Rams, @Eagles, Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles 5-6

Philadelphia has been disappointing up until this point of the season. Now they get a stretch where they face some of the worst teams in the league. The Eagles may be thin at wide receiver and offensive line but they should still win games against the Dolphins, Giants and Redskins.

Remaining Games:  @Dolphins, Giants, @Redskins, Cowboys, @Giants

Falcons WR Russell Gage named fantasy sleeper for Week 13

Russell Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie but topped both totals in Sunday’s game, finishing with eight catches for 76 yards.

After trading Mohamed Sanu to the Patriots, the Falcons needed to find someone on offense to fill his role as the team’s slot receiver.

Tight end Austin Hooper, who’s having a breakout season, injured his knee a few weeks ago. This has opened the door for second-year WR Russell Gage, Atlanta’s sixth-round pick from the 2018 draft. Gage recorded just six catches for 63 yards as a rookie. In Sunday’s loss to the Bucs, he finished with a career-high eight catches for 76 yards.

Gage has 21 catches over the past four games. With the Falcons extremely dinged up at tight end, defenses aren’t going to take their eyes off of Calvin Ridley or Julio Jones.

That means Gage will have a chance to develop a role in this offense over the final five weeks of the season. The fantasy football world has noticed, too. In Pat Yasinskas of TD Wire’s 9 fantasy sleepers for Week 13 feature, Gage was the first player mentioned:

Gage could be a good player to start in the Thanksgiving night game with the Saints. He gradually has taken on a bigger role in the offense because so much defensive attention goes to Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Gage had eight catches for 76 yards in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay. He should play a bigger role going forward.

Fantasy players are weary of getting burned by this Atlanta offense. Brian Hill failed to live up to his sleeper status two weeks ago, then Matt Ryan struggled against the Buccaneers’ 32nd-ranked scoring defense in Week 12.

Gage’s production was anticipated after the team traded Sanu, though, and we know Ryan likes to spread the ball around.

There’s no reason he shouldn’t continue to get around five catches per game and improve on his yardage totals. Don’t surprised if Gage has another career game on Thanksgiving night against the Saints.

Broncos are 1.5-point underdogs vs. Chargers in Week 13

The Broncos are considered slight underdogs against the Chargers in Week 13 of the NFL season.

The Denver Broncos (3-8) are considered 1.5-point home underdogs against the Los Angeles Chargers (4-7) in Week 13 of the NFL season, according to BetMGM. The over/under total for combined points scored between the two teams has been set at 38.5.

Last week, Denver scored just one field goal in a 20-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills (8-3). Los Angeles scored two touchdowns and a field goal in a 24-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs (7-4). Combined, the Broncos and Chargers scored 20 points last week, 18.5 points below of this week’s over/under line.

Denver has an advantage in the all-time series against L.A., leading the series with a 66-52-1 win-loss-tie record. The Broncos’ record against the Chargers is even better at home: 40-18-1.

Last month, Denver defeated L.A. 20-13 on the road in Week 5. The Chargers will be looking to return the favor on Sunday.

Broncos vs. Chargers: Quick preview for Week 13

View a preview of the Broncos’ game against the Chargers in Week 13.

The Denver Broncos(3-7) will host the Los Angeles Chargers (4-7) on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 4:25 p.m. ET at Empower Field at Mile High. The game will air regionally on CBS. Check out our quick preview of the contest below.

Broncos’ keys to victory: Denver’s defense needs to force Chargers QB Phillip Rivers into making mistakes. The Broncos’ defense has been a thorn in Rivers’ side his entire career. In 28 career games against Denver, Rivers has thrown 29 interceptions. The veteran QB has a losing record (13-15) against the Broncos and threw no touchdown passes and two interceptions when these two teams met on Oct. 6. Denver has rattled Rivers in the past by generating a pass rush and getting in the QB’s face. That should be the goal again on Sunday. On offense, the Broncos should keep things simple for young QB Brandon Allen, who has played well as a fill-in starter for the injured Joe Flacco. If Allen wants to fend off Drew Lock and keep his starting job, he’ll need to have a turnover-free game against Los Angeles.

Chargers’ keys to victory: Broncos WR Courtland Sutton has emerged as Allen’s favorite target, so L.A.’s secondary should focus on shutting him down. The Vikings had success two weeks ago when they double-teamed Sutton in the second half of a 27-23 win over Denver. The Chargers could follow Minnesota’s lead by having CB Casey Hayward and a safety follow Suton wherever he goes on the field. On offense, Los Angeles needs to feed RB Melvin Gordon and not abandon the run game. When the Broncos beat the Chargers 20-13 in Week 5, Gordon was given just 12 carries. L.A. needs to get the ground game going by continuing to give Gordon touches, taking some pressure off of Rivers.

Matchup to watch: Chargers TE Hunter Henry vs. Broncos defense. Henry was still sidelined with a knee injury when L.A. faced Denver last month and it showed. The Broncos’ defense held Rivers to a passer rating of 58.6 and Virgil Green led Chargers TEs with one catch for five yards. Henry is a much bigger threat to create plays than Green and Denver’s defense will need to be aware of him at all times.

Who wins? Both of these teams are longshots to make the playoffs so they might be playing for pride more than anything else on Sunday. Los Angeles will have something to prove after losing at home in October and the Broncos always put up a good fight in Denver. Broncos, 24-17.

  • The 49ers are 1-2-1 against the spread in their last four games but 5-1 ATS in their last six games against the AFC.
  • The Ravens are 4-0 ATS against teams with a winning record this season.
  • The 49ers are 5-0 on the road.

Prediction

Ravens 28, 49ers 21

Moneyline (?)

The Ravens have blown out each of their last five opponents and look absolutely unstoppable on offense. Despite having a worse record than the 49ers, they’re the hotter team and most likely the better one.

Take the RAVENS (-278) to win this one outright, defending their home turf behind yet another great performance by Lamar Jackson. The 49ers had trouble against Kyler Murray, and the Ravens are significantly better than Arizona.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Ravens to win outright would return a profit of $3.60.

Against the Spread (?)

The Ravens are 6.5-point favorites over the 49ers at home. They’ve won their last five games by an average of 28 points per game, so they haven’t had any trouble covering the spread lately. It doesn’t help the 49ers that this is a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on the East Coast, either.

The Ravens continue their remarkable streak against a tough 49ers defense, covering the 6.5-point margin. Bet the RAVENS (-106) to beat San Francisco by at least seven points.

Over/Under (?)

The over/under is set at 46.5 points, which is a half-point less than the Ravens scored against the Rams on Monday night. That being said, San Francisco’s defense is outstanding.

Still, bet the OVER (-110). The Ravens haven’t scored fewer than 23 points all season and the fewest points they’ve scored in the last five weeks is 30.

AFC Playoff Picture heading into Week 13

The AFC playoff picture is clear at the top with the Patriots and Ravens but murky at the bottom with the Bills, Steelers, and Browns.

There are three teams that can truly make a run at the Super Bowl — and maybe really two — and they are the Patriots, Ravens, and Chiefs. Every other squad looks to be fighting for a nice playoff game and an exit. Every division is decided except for the AFC South even though the Texans have to be the heavy favorite. As for the wild cards, those are wide open. The Bills look to have the inside track, but they could slip up. Let’s check out the race by division.

Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

AFC East

New England Patriots 10-1

New England had to go 2-2 in their stretch of games that started with the Eagles and ended with the Chiefs. They are already 2-0. They still can’t slip up since the Ravens have the tiebreaker due to Baltimore’s head to head win against the Pats. The good news is that New England has owned Houston in recent years. The bad news is that the Patriots offense hasn’t looked very good recently and they could struggle to keep up with the Texans and Chiefs. After their next two games, the Patriots final three matchups are all winnable.

Remaining Schedule: @Texans, Chiefs, @Bengals, Bills, Dolphins

Buffalo Bills 8-3

Buffalo gets Dallas on Thanksgiving and then 10 days to prepare for the unstoppable force that is the Ravens. They play at Pittsburgh which will be a rock fight and then at New England. The Bills may need to win their final game of the season against the suddenly surging Jets to make the playoffs.

Remaining Schedule: @Cowboys, Ravens, @Steelers, @Patriots, Jets

Lions Week 13 injury report: Frank Ragnow, Trey Flowers progressing through concussion protocol

Detroit Lions Week 13 injury report sees linemen Frank Ragnow and Trey Flowers progressing through concussion protocols.

The Detroit Lions (3-7-1) are hosting the Chicago Bears (5-6) for a Week 13 Thanksgiving day matchup at Ford Field.

The Lions did not hold a practice on Monday, so yesterday’s injury report was a estimations only. Today, the Lions only slightly increased their practice level, holding a walkthrough.

With the Lions eliminating the physical aspect of the first two practices of the week, they are allowing their players to rest up and heal, but at the same time, it limits the full understanding of player’s abilities to overcome their injuries.

Keeping in mind that things could change between now and tomorrow’s report, let’s take a look at where things stand on Tuesday.

Missed practice

QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip)
WR Marvin Hall (foot)
CB Rashaan Melvin (ribs)
RET. Jamal Agnew (ankle)

Maniacal efforts or not, Stafford doesn’t look like he is going to play this week.

Melvin, Agnew, and Hall being ruled out for a practice that was only a walkthrough is not a good sign for their status on Thursday.

If Melvin is unable to play it could mean more time for Amani Oruwariye at corner, while Agnew missing time means more Ty Johnson on kick returns. Hall would normally take over on punt return duties, but if he is also out, it likely means Danny Amendola will be back on punt return duties. Additionally, Hall’s absence may mean the Lions could be looking for a fourth wide receiver and that may mean the promotion of a practice squad player like Chris Lacy or Travis Fulgham.

Limited

QB Jeff Driskel (hamstring)
EDGE Trey Flowers (concussion) — upgraded
TE T.J. Hockenson (shoulder)
DT Damon Harrison (groin)
DL Da’Shawn Hand (ankle)
S Tracy Walker (knee)
P Sam Martin (abdomen)

Driskel is still very sore but improving according to Patricia. Most expect him to play on Thursday, including Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano:

Flowers was upgraded on the injury report but is confirmed to still be in the NFL’s concussion protocol by coach Matt Patricia at his afternoon press conference. It’s unclear which stage he is currently at, but based on this designation he may be in the final stages. His status for Thursday is still very much an unknown but a full padded practice tomorrow would go a long way.

Hand and Walker have now had two practices where they were expected to be active (but limited) participants. This is a positive step in the right direction.

Hockenson is still dealing with a shoulder injury that popped up Saturday night but he managed to play last Sunday and expectations are he will see the field again on Thursday.

Harrison and Martin have been talking rest days for some time now, this isn’t overly concerning at this time.

Practiced in full

C Frank Ragnow (concussion) — upgraded
OL Kenny Wiggins (knee)

Ragnow is also still in concussion protocol, and with no contact during today’s practice, he likely was unable to pass the last few requirements. He will have a chance to do that tomorrow, which should help him continue moving through the process.

Wiggins was an expected full participant again, meaning the Lions are optimistic he will be available to play.

Falcons Week 13 injury report: Devonta Freeman returns, Julio Jones out

The Atlanta Falcons (3-8) will host the New Orleans Saints (9-2) this Thursday in the NFL’s Thanksgiving night matchup.

The Atlanta Falcons (3-8) will host the New Orleans Saints (9-2) this Thursday in the NFL’s Thanksgiving night game. Practice is altered to help players adjust to the short week, so it’s tough to know who is out for rest and who is actually hurt until Wednesday’s designations are released.

Wide receiver Julio Jones missed practice on Monday and Tuesday while dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered during the team’s Week 12 loss to the Buccaneers. Running back Devonta Freeman returned today, though, and could see his first game action in three weeks.

Pete Carroll updates Seahawks’ injuries heading into Week 13

The Seahawks were able to escape the Eagles with a win and relatively no new injuries – here’s a look at the health status entering Week 13.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to escape the Philadelphia Eagles with a win and relatively no new injuries. Coach Pete Carroll updated the health of the team during his press conference on Monday.

Defensive tackle Jarran Reed (ankle): “He’s got a sprained ankle,” Carroll said. “We have to wait and see how it’s going to hold him back or if he’s going to make it through. We don’t that yet. It’s the same ankle that was sprained before. He just re-did it. Give us a couple days and then we’ll check him out probably about Friday to see how he’s doing.”

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (hernia): “It’s related to that, the sports hernia stuff,” Carroll explained of Clowney’s recent procedure. “That’s what he was treated for. We’ll see how the treatment took hold. He feels pretty good today. I haven’t talked to him directly, but he’s passed along that he’s looking forward to playing this week.”

Tight end Jacob Hollister (foot): “He’s a little sore, his foot’s sore after the hit,” Carroll confirmed. “That was a nasty play for him right there. Jake has been a stud. He’s taken a lot of hits; he delivered a lot them. Man, he’s playing good ball. He’s just doing such a good job, I’m so excited for Jake. Want to talk about a great pick up, he was a great pick up for us. He’s come through I such a big way, he still contributing in a big way for us on special teams too. I’m really excited about that.”

Tight end Luke Willson (hamstring): “Luke’s not counting himself out of this one,” Carroll stated. “He thinks he’s got a whole other week and he’s going to make it. We won’t challenge him until late in the week to see where it is. In pregame yesterday he looked pretty quick, he was running around and showing off, talking about that he wanted to play yesterday. He’s a rare guy, over the years he’s overcome stuff he never should have played with. That’s why the wolverine nickname floats around.”

Wide receiver Tyler Lockett (lower leg): “Yeah, Lockett’s better today,” Carroll said. “He feels better today. I didn’t see him at top speed, as much as we would have liked to think he was but, I didn’t see him able to get there. He didn’t have a very productive week. He had to really wait out the week, and it was a pretty screwed up weekend and all that. The long week this time, he’s going to be flying.”

The Seahawks have an off day Tuesday but resume practice Wednesday to gear up to face the Vikings Monday night.
