Vito Calvaruso, who transferred to Wisconsin from Arkansas, is back with Hogs

Arkansas’ old kicker is now Arkansas’ newest kicker after Vito Calvaruso transfers back from Wisconsin.

Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was the SEC. Maybe it was teammates or coaches. The reason why Vito Calvaruso returned to Arkansas may never be known by anyone but him.

But his old coach, who is once again his new coach, grinned widely when asked about the kicker’s transfer back from Wisconsin.

Man, it’s good to have him back,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “He has to sit out a year because of double transfer. But yeah, good to have him back.”

Calvaruso was Arkansas’ kickoff specialist in 2021, botting 63 of his 74 kicks for touchbacks. The former five-star recruit wanted a shot at scoring, though, and Cam Little had that duty wrapped up for the Razorbacks. Calvaruso took off for Wisconsin after the season to try to win the Badgers’ job.

For whatever reason, Wisconsin didn’t even use him on kickoffs, instead getting only 32 touchbacks on 68 kicks between two others. It was enough to make Calvaruso return to Fayetteville, anyway.

Little remains the Razorbacks primary placekicker and will have another year of eligibility in 2024. Calvaruso may have another shot after that and could even get his old gig back as soon as next year, too.

“I think he could have two (years of eligibility remaining),” Pittman said. “He could possibly have, I wonder this year, it makes him lose his COVID year so he should have two.”

Wisconsin kicker enters the transfer portal

Wisconsin kicker enters the transfer portal

A Wisconsin Badger announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon.

Badger kicker Vito Calvaruso is officially entering the transfer portal. The Wisconsin State Journal’s Colten Bartholomew was the first with the story.

Calvaruso started his collegiate career at Arkansas, where he played in 12 games for the Razorbacks.

He transferred to Wisconsin for the 2022 season after playing the 2020 and 2021 seasons at Arkansas. During his time as a Badger, he went 7-for-7 on extra points and 1-for-3 on field goals.

Calvaruso is known for his leg strength, and will look to find his third collegiate home in the portal this offseason.

The Badgers now have a pair of kickers on the current roster in Nate Van Zelst and Nathanial Vakos.

Wisconsin lands a transfer kicker from the SEC

The Badgers land a transfer kicker

Wisconsin special teams were an adventure all year long, and the Badgers are already making a point of building up the unit in the transfer portal.

Earlier today, the Badgers landed Arkansas transfer Vito Calvaruso after he announced his decision to enter the transfer portal just under a month ago. Before spending the past two seasons as a Razorback, Calvaruso was a five-star kicker in the 2020 class known for his leg strength.

Why is Wisconsin landing the former Arkansas kickoff specialist? It all boils down to one simple stat. This past season, Calvaruso attempted 74 kickoffs as the Arkansas specialist. 63 of those kicks ended up as touchbacks. He averaged 64.8 yards per kickoff, and will look to help the Badgers avoid any disasters in coverage.

Top available college football transfer portal specialists

Here are the top five available transfer portal specialists #Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes appear to be set at both kicker and punter with Noah Ruggles having another year of eligibility available and Jesse Mirco having three years left. Ruggles had a phenomenal season, but it is always rare for specialists to declare for the NFL Draft early.

It is still interesting to take a peak at what is available in this day and age of college football free agency. Ruggles was a transfer from North Carolina and shocked a number of people by beating out Jake Seibert. It would be unlikely that Ohio State dives in again this off-season, but we have seen weirder things happen. The following are the top five available specialists in the transfer portal so far for the 2021-2022 offseason.
