ACC Tournament Bracket Set

The ACC regular season has come to a close and the transition to college basketball’s postseason now begins. For Notre Dame that means the ACC Tournament which gets started in Greensboro, North Carolina on Tuesday.

In beating Virginia Tech on Saturday, Notre Dame locked up a 10-10 ACC record and seventh place conference finish. They get a first round bye as a result and will play No. 10 Boston College on Wednesday night as tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.

If Notre Dame wins that they will play No. 2 Virginia on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and the winner of that contest will play the winner of the No. 2 Louisville, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 14 North Carolina pod.

No. 1 Florida State and No. 4 Duke sit on the other side of the bracket.

Early impressions from me are that this is as good of a draw as Notre Dame could hope for. A Boston College team they should beat, a seconded-seeded Virginia squad they should have beat on the road earlier this season and then a potential semi-final draw that wouldn’t be against the only team to really run them out of the gym in an ACC contest this year.

March Madness is upon us. Here’s to hoping for a nice run into maybe Friday night for Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish.

Prediction

Duke 66, Virginia 59

Moneyline (ML)

DUKE (-167) heads into this one looking to bounce back after a tough loss at Wake Forest. They’ve had several days to rest after being on the short end of a double-overtime thriller. Virginia (+135) has struggled against the top-flight teams. While they’ve pieced together a nice win streak lately, the Blue Devils are the better bet to bounce back.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Blue Devils returns a $6 profit. A wager of $10 on the Cavaliers returns a profit of $13.50.

Against the Spread (ATS)

DUKE (-3.5, -106) is in good shape for this one if you go by the series trends. The road team is an impressive 21-5-1 ATS across the past 27 meetings in this series. Virginia (+3.5, -115) has that grinding style and suffocating defense, but if the Blue Devils start to run wild, it’s doubtful the Cavs have enough to hang with them. UVA will need to dictate the style early to have a chance.

Over/Under (O/U)

AVOID. Duke is a good Over bet usually, and Virginia has been a consistent Under bet all season. This one is likely to be right on the number, even if UVA gives up a little more than they usually do. The total 124.5 is just too risky for this game.

Angler catches record tuna, as predicted, then gives it away

After a week of predicting he would catch a state-record bluefin tuna, Jake Hiles went out and did it, and then made a surprising gesture.

After predicting he was going to catch a state-record bluefin tuna and asking several others to join him, Jake Hiles finally found someone to accompany him fishing off the Virginia coast, and went out and caught the record, landing a 708-pounder.

Then he gave away his fish of a lifetime.

Hiles, who operates Matador Sport Fishing Charters out of Virginia Beach, took the day off from work last Saturday and went fishing with a friend, Jeff Landis, in a place known as the “tuna hole” some 80 miles offshore.

“I spent about a week contacting people, telling them that we would go catch the record and no one could go,” Hiles told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors.

Until Landis came forward.

Then Hiles made good on his prediction, catching a behemoth bluefin that beat the previous record by more than 100 pounds.

Field and Stream called it the fishing equivalent of Babe Ruth standing at the plate and pointing his bat toward the fence then smacking a home run, adding that Hiles had texted one friend, “I’m gonna go catch the new Virginia state record this weekend.”

Also on FTW Outdoors: Angler catches bizarre sea creature, luckily doesn’t touch it

Hiles bested the record set by his friend Chase Robinson in April 2015. That was a 606-pounder, and Hiles was on the boat that day.

“I always thought since Chase’s passing that it would be fitting if one of Chase’s friends broke his record,” Hiles told The Virginia-Pilot, pointing out that his friend died a short time after the catch.

Hiles told For The Win Outdoors that this was biggest tuna he’s caught recreationally, adding that it was “verified by the state and is pending.”

The tuna, which took an hour to bring in, measured 9 1/2 feet with a girth nearly 6 1/2 feet, according to Field and Stream. There was plenty of precious meat. So Hiles posted an invitation to those who follow him on Facebook to come down to the Virginia Beach Fishing Center to get a hunk of tuna. And they did, lining up with coolers to fill.

“I had 708 pounds of tuna that is best eaten fresh and I can’t eat it all myself,” Hiles told Fish and Stream “It’s nice to be able to share this with the community.”

Hiles told For The Win, “I probably gave fish to 300 people or more.” He said not an ounce of the fish was wasted. He kept less than two pounds for himself.

“No amount of money, or charters, or publicity is worth to me the sentimental value of this record,” Hiles wrote on Facebook. “Chase’s record meant a lot to me. I know records get broken, but I wanted to honor Chase by breaking his record. I did that and no amount of criticism or jealousy can take that away from me…

“Setting this record was a personal goal of mine. I achieved my goal. But I have received some criticism.”

The critics apparently questioned his keeping the fish, alleged it was caught in North Carolina waters, and claimed bluefin tuna are endangered. Hiles refuted it all, saying he had a legal right to keep the fish, that bluefin aren’t endangered and that it was caught according to the rules of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament (the state’s record keeper) in federal waters off the coast of North Carolina.

Hiles also pointed out the financial boom to the local fishing industry, with the record generating publicity for the entire area’s bluefin tuna fishery, and it clearly is doing just that.

As a memory, Hiles kept the tail and will have it mounted.

Notre Dame Basketball: Playing Crummy Carolina

After getting blown out at No. 7 Duke on Saturday, Notre Dame will return home for Presidents’ Day and battle the other blue-colored school from the Old North State: North Carolina. The Irish (15-10, 6-8) already battled the Tar Heels (10-15, 3-11) …

After getting blown out at No. 7 Duke on Saturday, Notre Dame will return home for Presidents’ Day and battle the other blue-colored school from the Old North State: North Carolina. The Irish (15-10, 6-8) already battled the Tar Heels (10-15, 3-11) during the season opener and lost, 76-65. Since then, the normally formidable Carolina program has struggled even more than the Irish, so this could be a much-needed reprieve.

Notre Dame has not defeated North Carolina since 2016. To break the skid, it will have to do so on one day of rest and at the end of a challenging stretch. It not only included the landslide loss to the Blue Devils, but also a close overtime defeat to Virginia that was preceded by a win over Clemson.

Juwan Durham will be the player to watch after scoring a career-high 21 points over Duke. It was the first time he has reached the 20-point mark during his career. He is averaging 11.5 points over his past four games while shooting 74 percent from the field.

Former Giant Clint Sintim named defensive line coach at UVA

Former New York Giants second-round pick Clint Sintim has been named the defensive line coach at the University of Virginia.

The University of Virginia announced on Saturday evening that former Cavalier, Clint Sintim, had been hired as the team’s new defensive line coach, which is a position that was made available when Vic So’oto revealed earlier this month that he’d be joining the staff at USC.

Sintim dominated during his time at UVA, being named Sporting News Freshman All-ACC, Sporting News Freshman All-American and ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2015, First-team All-ACC in 2007 and Second-team All-ACC in 2008.

In 2009, Sintim was a second-round pick of the New York Giants in the NFL Draft, and expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, Sintim would never be able to recreate his college success and after just three seasons in blue, the linebacker’s NFL career would come to an end.

After two ACL tears, Sintim officially retired in 2013 having appeared in just 24 NFL games (one start), recording 33 tackles (two for a loss), three QB hits and one sack.

In retirement, Sintim almost immediately found his way into coaching, joining the staff at West Alabama in 2014 before moving onto Virginia, Richmond and Delaware and then returning to UVA on Saturday.

Notre Dame Basketball: Battling the Blue Devils

If Notre Dame is indeed in the mix for the NCAA tournament according to some experts, it needs to support that opinion with an upset over No. 7 Duke on Saturday. The Irish (15-9, 6-7) will be at the end of a challenging three-game road trip. That it concludes against the Blue Devils (21-3, 11-2) and the Cameron Crazies along with the fact that it will be telecast on ESPN with Dick Vitale at the mic only ups the pressure.

You know what? Let’s dig into the vault just because (Warning: NSFW).

Anyway, the Irish are going to have to find some momentum after an overtime loss to Virginia that shouldn’t have been. All they had to do was make one more basket, and they’d be riding a five-game winning streak. Instead, they’re up against a program they’ve lost five straight against and one that’s having another big season.

If John Mooney is going to have one of his double-doubles mean something, now would be the time to do it.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Can’t Close Out Cavs

Tuesday’s Notre Dame-Virginia game won’t be memorable for offensive enthusiasts. However, the Irish (15-9, 6-7) will remember this as another missed opportunity in a season that’s been full of them. There’s no other to describe this 50-49 overtime loss to the Cavaliers (16-7, 8-5).

The Irish had more than enough chances to close a game they led for the majority of the time. They were outscored, 3-2, in the extra session, which meant there was no room for error as each play could make or break both teams’ fates. It ended when Rex Pflueger missed a corner 3 in the final seconds, and the Irish were unable to get a second chance in what little time would have been left.

In a game as low-scoring as this one, it shouldn’t be surprising that Prentiss Hubb’s 12 points were the most of any Notre Dame player. John Mooney achieved his latest double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Nate Laszewski scored 11 off the bench.

Longhorns offer Virginia Football Player of the Year

Texas has given an offer to TreVeyon Henderson out of Hopewell, Virginia. Henderson is a four-star athlete in the 2021 class but mainly plays running back. If he were to be a running back, Henderson would be the seventh player the Longhorns have offered at the position in 2021.

Listed at 5 feet 10 inches, Henderson has been outstanding for Hopewell High School the past two seasons. In his junior year, he nearly ran for 2,500 yards, recording 2,424 yards and 45 touchdowns on 198 carries. Henderson was also a threat catching the ball, having 283 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 13 receptions.

Playing some snaps on the defensive side of the ball, he recorded 48 tackles, three of them for a loss. Henderson also forced four turnovers, three via interceptions.

His efforts in the 2019 season were good enough to earn him Virginia Player of the Year. Most top schools throughout the country are in on Henderson, with Oklahoma and West Virginia coming from the Big 12. Clemson seems to be the favorite to land his commitment right now, but the door remains open for Texas to ink another star running back.

Notre Dame Basketball: Pflueger & Mooney Money in Win at Clemson

It was Pflueger who was out of sorts in a good way who helped paved the way

In an absolute “got to have it” game for Notre Dame basketball Sunday night, veterans John Mooney and Rex Pflueger and John Mooney were nails in the 61-57 Fighting Irish victory.

Mooney did what Mooney does, scoring 16 and pulling down 11 boards en-route to his 19th double-double on the year.

It was Pflueger who was out of sorts in a good way who helped paved the way. The fifth year guard had a season high 18 points while shooting a perfect five-of-five from beyond the arc.

For comparison, Pflueger entered Sunday shooting all of 30% from three.

Clemson was playing without leading scorer and rebounder Aamir Simms who was dealing with the flu. They wound up being led by guards Tevin Mack and Alex Hemenway who each finished with 16.

The Tigers fell to 11-12 overall on the year and 5-8 in ACC play.

Notre Dame won their fourth straight ACC game to improve to 15-8 overall and get back to .500 and 6-6 in the league.

The difficulty scale now gets turned up for Mike Brey and Notre Dame as the Irish return to action Tuesday night in Virginia before a trip to Cameron Indoor Arena and Duke awaits Saturday.
