5-star RB TreVeyon Henderson included Georgia football in his most recent cut.

Georgia fans received some good news on Tuesday when five-star running back TreVeyon Henderson included the Bulldogs in his most recent cut.

Henderson cut his list of schools to nine: Georgia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Texas, Ohio State, North Carolina, Penn State, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Henderson hails from Hopewell, Virginia. Kirby Smart will have his work cut out for him to persuade the 5-foot, 11-inch, 195-pound Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year to head south to Georgia.

Henderson ranks as the nation’s No. 17 overall prospect, No. 2 running back and No. 3 player in his state.

Ohio State is viewed as his leader, per the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Oklahoma is right there as well.

Henderson took a visit to Georgia in early February and holds over 40 offers.

The Buckeyes possess the nation’s top recruiting class for the 2021 cycle and recently landed a commitment from another elite running back, Georgia target Evan Pryor.

 

College Football News projects Georgia’s win total for 2020 season

College Football News made win total projections for all CFB teams, including Georgia football and the SEC. With a tough 2020 schedule….

Pete Fiutak at College Football News recently released his projected win totals for all 130 FBS programs.Ā 

For Georgia, fans are looking at this season, just like every year, as national title or bust.

But recently the pressure’s been on more than usual, with the Dawgs coming so close to making a return visit to the College Football Playoff in each of the last two seasons.

This season should be no different. The schedule is tough, but Kirby Smart has recruited well enough to position the Bulldogs for another SEC Championship and Playoff run.

In his win total projections, Fiutak has Georgia projected to win 10 games, meaning the Bulldogs would finish the regular season at 10-2.

If Georgia does go 10-2 in the regular season, that would be its worst record since Smart’s first year in Athens when he went 7-5.

Fiutak highlights Florida, Auburn and Alabama as Georgia’s key games in 2020. That’s a tough slate, and it looks like he projects Georgia to come out of that 1-2.

If Georgia finishes with 10 wins, but beats Florida, it’ll likely make the SEC Championship — which would then become a must-win game for UGA if it wants to make the Playoff.

Last preseason, Fiutak projected Georgia’s win total at 10.5, and the Bulldogs proceeded to win 11 games.

As for Florida, Fiutak also predicts the Gators to win 10 games. That would make that Halloween Cocktail Party a massive meeting between the two rivals.

Notable SEC projections from Fiutak:

Alabama’s win total projection is at 11, LSU 10 and Auburn 8.

Outside of the SEC, he has Clemson and Ohio State at 11, Oklahoma 10.5 and Oregon at 10.

The sequel is almost never as good as the original.

For five key teams, trying to recreate what happened in 2019 is going to be next to impossible.

It doesn’t matter how good you are. If you’re coming off a huge season, you probably won’t get the same breaks, the right timing with the schedule, or that magical blend that made the previous campaign so special.

The five teams on this list aren’t going to be bad. On the contrary, most should be massive factors in their respective division and conference races.

However, just one extra loss could be enough for each of these five to take a wee step back.

What Made 2019 Special?Ā 

Bronco Mendenhall did it.

He took an okay program that was happy just to get to a bowl game on a regular basis, and he turned it into the Coastal Division champion that got to take its cut at the ACC Championship.

So what that Virginia got blown out by Clemson? So what that it lost to Florida in the Orange Bowl? It was a blast of a season with a win over Virginia Tech for the first time since 2003, a great finishing kick to take the vision, and again, it all finished up with a trip to the ACC title game and the Orange Bowl.

Why 2020 Will Be A Bit Worse: Returning Talent

Virginia is good enough now where it can rebuild a bit and not worry too much about falling off the map. However, you don’t get better by losing a heart-and-soul quarterback like Bryce Perkins.

Bryce Hall was a special corner, the receiving corps drops some key parts, and Jordan Mack was a killer in the middle of the linebacking corps, but a whole lot of strong players are back.

If all goes to plan, as many as nine starters on the offensive side are back and seven should return on D. Throw in the developed depth, and how is Virginia going to be any worse?

Lose four regular season games after dropping three last year.

Virginia might have been tough and good, and there’s no dogging that win over Virginia Tech, but it also did a little bit of bum-slaying in a miserable year for the ACC.

It didn’t have to play Clemson until the ACC Championship, and while it got past Pitt and North Carolina, it also had wins over William & Mary, Duke, Georgia Tech, Liberty, and a mediocre Florida State team.

The ACC Coastal is notoriously flaky.

This time around, Virginia has to go to Virginia Tech and Clemson. Miami is going to be better – at least, it should be – Louisville, Pitt and North Carolina are going to be dangerous, and in non-conference play, opening up against Georgia isn’t great.

But the schedule isn’t allĀ thatĀ bad. This should be another strong Virginia team that but go 8-4 instead of 9-3, and it’ll be a wee step back.

2020 Georgia football schedule: Game-by-game predictions

A look at the 2020 Georgia football schedule with predictions for each game.

Coming off a 2019 that saw Georgia come so close to reaching the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs open up the 2020 season with a Monday night game vs Virginia in Atlanta.

If Georgia – which should be favored in every game minus an October visit to Alabama – takes care of business, then UGA should close out the season in the same stadium it started in.

The Dawgs return a lot of talent in 2020, mostly on a defense that ranked No. 1 in America last season.

On offense, Georgia lost a ton of production, including its starting quarterback, its top two running backs, 4 starting offensive linemen and a star wide receiver.

By looking at who Georgia lost from last season’s offense it’s hard to picture the Dawgs making another big run, but it’s important to remember that Kirby Smart has secured three consecutive top ranked recruiting classes. In addition to the loads of talent waiting on the depth chart, Georgia was also able to land Heisman hopeful quarterback Jamie Newman from Wake Forest.

If Georgia is going to have another memorable season, it will need these new offensive faces to be capable of moving the ball more than James Coley’s offense was able to in 2019.

The addition of Todd Monken, who I’d say is Georgia’s biggest get this offseason, should make that possible.

With a ferocious defense and revamped offense, here’s how I see this season playing out for Georgia.

Georgia football opens in Atlanta

Georgia football 2020 opens with the Virginia Cavaliers in Atlanta on September 7th, in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game.

ATLANTA, Ga.–Palpable excitement is already building in certain circles in Atlanta for the University of Georgia Bulldogs college football season opener. Considered by many to be the world capital of college football, winning more in the nationally prominent games played in downtown Atlanta is of the utmost importance if Kirby Smart’s program is going to be atop the tip of the upper echelon of the old sport, entering its 151st season.

Under Coach Smart, Georgia has fared extremely well at Grant Field in Midtown Atlanta while playing its in-state rival. But after opening 2-0 in big games played in the domes (Georgia Dome, Mercedes-Benz Stadium), UGA has somewhat alarmingly dropped three straight such contests. Each loss came to a powerful SEC West opponent: a national championship overtime defeat to Bama; a near replay of that game featuring the same two programs in an eerily similar SEC championship game; finally, a disheartening blowout at the hands of the current national champions, LSU.

Opening with the ACC’s Virginia Cavaliers in Atlanta could get the big city mojo flowing in the right direction. Georgia is plainly planning a return trip for a fourth straight SEC championship game and well-positioned amongst the favorites to win the SEC title.

The action commences on September 7th, on the holiday weekend Monday. UGA will be playing football on back-to-back weekdays for the first time, after beating Baylor in a midweek Sugar Bowl, on the first day of the new decade. Winning a New Year’s 6 bowl definitely pushed Georgia in a positive direction.

Hoos ahead for Dawgs: The Bulldogs are 1-1 in Chick-fil-A Kickoff Ā  games, including 1-1 versus the ACC, with a defeat of North Carolina in Kirby Smart’s head coaching debut in 2016. UGA and UVa met twice in Atlanta for Peach Bowls, which I attended. Virginia won 34-27 in 1995 after a gallant comeback effort by polyglot quarterback Hines Ward came up short in the final seconds, in Ray Goff’s final game as a coach. After that defeat, the all-time series stood at even. Then, Georgia was able to win the next two meetings between the programs, a narrow 35-33 escape in Atlanta in 1998 and a 37-14 blowout in Hawaii for the Jeep Oahu Bowl of 2000, in Jim Donnan’s last game coaching.

Virginia, who finished ranked 25th in the final Coaches Poll off a competitive defeat by the Florida Gators in the Orange Bowl, of the New Year’s 6, should be familiar with grad transfer quarterback Jamie Newman, a former Wake Forest Demon Deacon.

Kirby Smart is 4-0 in season openers as a head coach.

For those keeping score, Fighting Irish foes from this season went 3-5 in their respective bowl games.

The 2019 bowl season has come and gone (for the most part, two games actually still remain) and all of Notre Dame’s opponents from the season that just wrapped up have finished their seasons.

How did all do in the post-season?

Virginia clinches ACC Coastal, snaps 15-game losing streak to Virginia Tech

With a 39-30 win on Friday in Charlottesville, Virginia knocked off rival Virginia Tech for the first time since 2003, snapping a streak of 15 consecutive losses to the Hokies in the Commonwealth Cup.

Virginia snaps 15-game losing streak against Virginia Tech with thrilling finish

This incredible sack-fumble-TD sequence helped Virginia get the W.

With one incredible defensive play with about a minute left in the game, Virginia all but ensured it would snap its 15-game losing streak to Virginia Tech on Friday. The Cavaliers did, in fact, win, 39-30, to clinch the ACC Coastal division, and they’ll play Clemson for a conference championship next weekend.

Virginia kicked back-to-back field goals in the fourth quarter against the Hokies, and the second one was a 48-yarder that gave the Cavaliers a 33-30 lead with 1:23 left in the game. All they had to do was hold on, which seemed far easier said than done.

But on Virginia Tech’s next drive, quarterback Hendon Hooker was sacked three times. With 61 seconds left, UVA defensive end Mandy Alonso tackled Hooker in the end zone and forced a fumble, and defensive tackle Eli Hanback recovered it for what was basically the game-ending touchdown.

Here’s another angle:

Alonso entered Friday’s game with just one sack on the season, but he stepped up when it mattered most.

While defense helped the Cavaliers lock up the victory, their offense deserves recognition as well. Quarterback Bryce Perkins accounted for 475 of the team’s 492 total yards, completing 20-of-33 passes for 311 yards with one touchdown and an interception while also rushing for 164 yards and two more touchdowns.

Understandably, Virginia fans went nuts when the game was finally over and stormed the field. To put this win in perspective, the younger members of the school’s student body were toddlers the last time the Cavaliers took down Virginia Tech.

Virginia is the seventh different Coastal division winner in as many years, while Clemson is looking for its fifth consecutive ACC championship.
