Kirk Herbstreit absolutely slammed Tennessee by picking Vanderbilt to beat Vols this weekend

Vols fans won’t be happy about this.

ESPN college football personality Kirk Herbstreit didn’t offer Tennessee Vols fans much confidence in their big bowl chances.

While Tennessee has been knocked out of College Football Playoff contention, it’s still possible the Volunteers can snag a prime bowl game around the New Year’s holiday. Herbstreit didn’t exactly give the Vols a ringing endorsement for how the rest of their season will go, saying that they will lose to Vanderbilt this weekend to close their standout 2022 season.

If you didn’t know, Vanderbilt is Tennessee’s longtime archrival. It would’ve seemed absurd a few months ago to think someone like Herbstreit would pick the Commodores in this one.

Well, times change.

Vols fans aren’t going to be happy about this one. Since Tennessee got blown out by South Carolina and lost quarterback Hendon Hooker to an ACL injury, it’s understandable they won’t be seen as surefire locks against Vandy.

The Commodores have beaten Kentucky and Florida in two-straight contests, giving them some momentum for Saturday’s game in Nashville.

If Vandy beat Tennessee after the year the Vols have had, there would be unreal levels of trash talking in the Volunteer State. Commodore fans would never let Vols fans live it down. We’ll see how it all goes soon enough.

Vanderbilt’s long snapper scored a chaotic touchdown. Yes, you read that right.

I can’t believe I just wrote that.

It’s been a fun couple of college football Saturdays for Vanderbilt football.

Last week, the Commodores beat then-No. 24 Kentucky on the road for their first SEC win since 2019. It was a victory that made head coach Clark Lea emotional.

Saturday, Vanderbilt had a different reason to celebrate. The Commodores took a lead in the second quarter against visiting Florida after their long snapper scored a touchdown.

I can’t believe I just wrote that. But yes, you read that correctly.

One more time: A long snapper scored a touchdown for the Vanderbilt Commodores to give them a lead over the Florida Gators.

A scoring play that was as wild and chaotic as this one deserves a closer look. We have to commend Wesley Schelling for his incredible effort on this one-of-a-kind play.

Believe it or not, this is exactly what a lot of special teams coordinators want out of their long snappers in modern college football. For a lot of punt formations, the long snapper often serves as the third gunner. After the ball is snapped, he’s sprinting down the field to not only help in coverage but also to be one of the first responders around the returner.

Georgia special teams quality control coach Kirk Benedict — then the special teams coordinator at Duke – told me in 2019:

“We call our long snapper the third gunner. So, he’s got to be down there making an effect on the return. If he’s not, our goal is to have a guy who can impact their scheme in some way. He’s either drawing an extra defender, or he’s down there in the returner’s face.”

Of course, the long snapper isn’t going to force or recover a fumble on every punt, but it’s ideal that they’re in a position to make a play if needed. Saturday, Schelling was in the right place at the right time, and it paid off in a big way for Vandy.

UPDATE: Vanderbilt is on a two-game win streak after beating Florida, 31-24.

Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea gave an emotional interview after Commodores’ first SEC win since 2019

“It’s been a long, long run,” Clark Lea said fighting through tears.

Saturday was a monumental day for Vanderbilt football, and their fans everywhere have so many reasons to celebrate.

With the Commodores’ 24-21 win over No. 24 Kentucky on the road in Week 11, they snapped a 26-game SEC losing streak and claimed their first conference victory since October 19, 2019 (when they beat Missouri 21-14).

Trailing by four late in the fourth quarter, Vanderbilt took then lead with about 30 seconds left with quarterback Mike Wright connected with receiver Will Sheppard for an eight-yard touchdown. And with a good extra point, the Commodores had a field-goal lead when the Wildcats got the ball back for a failed last-chance drive.

And just like that, Vanderbilt is a winner in the SEC again. Along with snapping a three-year conference losing streak, it was also the first SEC win for Commodores coach Clark Lea, who was understandably emotional afterward.

“I’m proud of all the guys; they earned that,” Lea told the SEC Network after praising Wright’s play and perseverance. “They earned that. It’s been a long, long run — excuse my emotions — they earned it.”

Tearing up, Lea continued to shower his squad with compliments in his emotional post-game interview. He continued:

“You’ve got a bunch of guys that are fighting. And we’re building a program. Building a program’s hard. And it takes tough people that are aligned, doing the right things the right way. And that’s what these guys are doing. I’m glad they got rewarded today.”

Vanderbilt football hilariously cracks joke about alum Trent Sherfield after ‘Butt Punt’

Even Vanderbilt got in on the fun of making jokes about the “Butt Punt.”

If you’re going to be involved in the “Butt Punt,” you might as well have a sense of humor.

In its weekly shoutout of alums in the NFL, Vanderbilt football had some fun with former Commodore wideout and current Miami Dolphin Trent Sherfield, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Sherfield’s keister has become one of the most talked about in the league after it took a hard punt from veteran Dolphins punter Thomas Morstead during Miami’s 21-19 win over the Buffalo Bills. The end zone punt slammed into Sherfield’s hiney as he was in punt protection mode.

The mishap gave Buffalo a safety and the ball back late in the fourth for a chance to take the lead.

Miami’s defense held on to keep the Dolphins at a surprising 3-0, but the  jokes spread like wildfire about Morstead and Sherfield’s unfortunate “Butt Punt.”

Sherfield’s old team even got in on gently teasing its old wide receiver.

Sherfield’s one catch for five yards during Miami’s win has, of course, paled in comparison to the “Butt Punt,” and it’s nice to see Vanderbilt be able to have a little fun with it.

The ‘Dores got demolished Saturday by Alabama 55-3, so it’s probably nice for Commodore fans to have a bit of a laugh after that pulverizing defeat.

If you feel bad for Sherfield, don’t be too upset. His Dolphins are 3-0, and he seems to be taking the moment in stride. As he…cheekily…points out, a win’s a win.
