Georgia at Vanderbilt basketball: TV, preview and prediction

Georgia basketball looks to snap a six game losing streak at Vanderbilt on Wednesday night

The Georgia Bulldogs (14-11, 4-8) basketball team is on a six game losing skid. The Bulldogs are desperate as they hit the road to face the Vanderbilt Commodores (7-18, 2-10) in an SEC clash on Wed., Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Georgia-Vanderbilt game will be televised on the SEC Network.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs have seen their NCAA Tournament hopes decline significantly over the past six games. Georgia needs to go 6-0 or 5-1 over its final six games of the regular season in order to be back in the NCAA Tournament conversation.

Georgia is 2-8 in its last 10 games after going on a 10-game winning streak earlier in the season. The Bulldogs have lost several games with halftime leads and have lost by more than 10 points just twice this season.

Vanderbilt has won just four of its last 21 games. The Commodores would have to win the SEC tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia’s leading scorer is Jabri Abdur-Rahim at 12.7 points per game.  Vanderbilt guard Ezra Manjon is the Commodores’ leading scorer at 14.1 points per game. ESPN gives Georgia a 73.5% chance to defeat Vanderbilt.

Prediction: Georgia 73, Vanderbilt 68

Georgia finally gets back in the winning column with a road win at Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs do finally win a close game game and snap their losing streak.

Top-10 national recruit and 5-star guard Mikayla Blakes, makes an SEC commitment

Mikayla Blakes is heading to the SEC.

Mikayla Blakes made her college decision on Monday as the five-star guard committed to Vanderbilt.

She picked the Commodores from a final seven that also included Indiana, Rutgers, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA and Wisconsin.

One of the top guards in the nation, Blakes is a 2024 recruit who is having a tremendous final season at Rutgers Prep (Somerset, New Jersey). She entered the weekend with a scoring average of 20.8 points per game.

A five-star according to ESPN, Blakes checks in as the tenth-best recruit in the nation in the 2024 class.

She made her commitment on Monday afternoon following school.

On the season, Vanderbilt is currently 17-3. They lost this weekend at Tennessee.

Blakes is a versatile and athletic guard. Besides being a strong scorer who can drive to the basket or shoot from distance, she is a tough defender who is aggressive off the ball.

She is the only Vanderbilt commit to make the ESPNW 100.

Jerry Stackhouse, Vanderbilt make jump in bracketology

Will Vanderbilt find itself in the NCAA Tournament? Jerry Stackhouse’s team is making a big move.

Former UNC basketball standout and current Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse is making some noise here in early March.

Vanderbilt finds themselves in the SEC Tournament semifinals after beating LSU on Thursday and then pulling off another upset by taking down Kentucky on Friday night. And with that latest win, Stackhouse has his team potentially on the verge of an NCAA Tournament bid.

That was something that wasn’t in the cards a month ago.

After losing to Alabama 101-41 on January 31st, Vanderbilt has gone 10-1 including two upset wins over Kentucky. Now, going into Saturday’s game against Texas A&M, the Commodores have moved up in Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology.

Vanderbilt is among the first four out now, leapfrogging UNC, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Michigan since the start of the SEC Tournament. They do find themselves as team No. 72 on the projection, behind Oklahoma State, Nevada, and Clemson.

A win on Saturday could vault them right to team No. 69 before they have the chance to clinch an automatic bid.

Former UNC star and current Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse wins co-SEC Coach of the Year

Former UNC basketball star and current Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse was named co-SEC Coach of the Year.

Former UNC basketball star and current Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse received a big honor on Monday.

Stackhouse was named the co-SEC Coach of the Year, receiving the award alongside Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams.

Vanderbilt had one of the hottest ends of the season across the SEC and the country. The Commodores won eight of their last nine games, including wins over No. 6 Tennessee and No. 23 Kentucky.

With its late-season run, Vanderbilt finished 18-13 overall and 11-7 in SEC play, ending the season tied for fourth in the conference.

The Commodores are the No. 6 seed in the SEC Tournament and will play the No. 11 Georgia/No. 14 LSU winner in the second round. After that, a potential matchup with No. 3 Kentucky looms.

This was a significant moment in Stackhouse’s coaching career. After two straight losing seasons in which his team went 20-37, he has gone 19-17 and 18-13 in back-to-back seasons.

This season was also the first time Vanderbilt had more than 10 wins in conference play since 2015-16.

Despite the lack of success in the previous few seasons, Stackhouse signed a contract extension heading into this year.

“The positive trajectory of our men’s basketball program under coach Stackhouse is clear,” Vanderbilt athletic director Candice Lee said in October. “Committing to and investing in him as the leader is an important part of building the championship caliber program that we all want and expect here at Vanderbilt. I value the contributions Jerry and his program have made to our community and campus, and I am excited about our future.”

Alabama vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama is going to keep on shooting threes. That’s what it does.

It threw a whopping 40 up against Kentucky in the loss a few days ago – making 14 – and it’s going to stay on brand against a Vanderbilt defense that isn’t going to bomb away if it needs to keep up.

The Commodores have had their moments from the outside, but can they find enough other ways to score if they’re not making 12 threes – the eight they average per game?

They’re not good enough from the free throw line – even though they get there a lot – they don’t come up with enough offensive rebounds, and they’re not going to keep up if the Crimson Tide stay on brand.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Vanderbilt can guard the three.

It got rocked by Auburn last week, but for the most part it’s great at keeping teams to around 35% or under from three. It has to do that at home – and being in the Gymnasium matters.

It’s 0-5 on the road in its last five games and won its last four at home.

The offense doesn’t turn the ball over that much, and Alabama will put the Commodores on the line a bazillion times. Yeah, the threes will come raining down, but the Tide all about quantity over quality – they miss a ton from the outside, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama is lousy on the road.

They’ve won a few road games back in early January, but they’ve dropped six straight on the road mostly because they keep on missing their threes.

Vanderbilt will pull off a desperately needed victory that needs to be a spark.

Auburn vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

No, the Commodores aren’t going to crank up the offense and they won’t keep up if Auburn goes off, but they have the ability to hit from three and the defense is terrific at guarding the outside.

It’s possible to make Auburn one dimensional. As good as it is, it’s been lousy from three – it hasn’t hit 30% from beyond the arc in any of its last six games – and there’s a problem when the free throws aren’t dropping.

Vanderbilt can pull this off if it can force a slew of turnovers and eventually make this a free throw shooting contest, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn should be deadly on the move.

Vanderbilt doesn’t move the ball around well enough to overcome the concerns on the inside against everything the Tigers can do. Auburn comes up with a whole lot of blocks and it’s killing everyone on the boards.

Vanderbilt is hardly awful on the boards, but it’s not going to be able to keep the Tigers off the offensive glass. They’re owning the inside and getting tons and tons of second chance points with ten or more offensive rebounds in the last six games with a whopping 21 in the loss to Arkansas and 23 in the win over Missouri.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

All of those offensive boards aren’t necessarily a good thing – Auburn is missing a whole lot shots lately and the threes just aren’t falling on a consistent basis. The defense will help pick up the slack.

Vanderbilt hasn’t been all that bad on the road overall, but it’s not going to be able to move the ball around well enough and it won’t be able to handle the Tigers inside on either end of the floor.
