UTSA remains undefeated with last-second TD on tipped pass

UTSA is undefeated after a miraculous victory over UAB

The University of Texas-San Antonio cut it close but remains undefeated.

The Roadrunners needed a touchdown in the final seconds on Saturday to down UAB, 34-31.

UTSA is now 11-0 and 7-0 in Conference USA.

UTSA trailed 31-27 and got the ball on its 23 with 1:06 left in the game.

The Roadrunners went 77 yards in 7 plays and Frank Harris found Oscar Cardenas with a 1-yard pass with three seconds left. The throw was deflected before winding up in the arms of Cardenas.

In case you were wondering, Harris throws left-handed so he didn’t attempt the pass with his non-throwing hand.

Per Goutsa.com:

Harris, who threw for 323 yards and three TDs on 25-of-36 passing, scrambled down to the 1-yard line only to be stopped short with nine seconds left on the clock. Following an incompletion on second and goal, Harris scooped up a low snap and found Cardenas, who hauled in the game-winner after a deflection near the back of the end zone.

UTA ran its conference winning streak to 10 and will play host to the Conference USA Championship Game on Dec. 3.

UTSA also won for the program-record ninth straight time at home.

Projecting this week’s College Football Playoff Rankings

Who will see the biggest jump and biggest falls in this week’s CFP rankings?

10 weeks of college football have come and gone in 2021 and although plenty of the preseason favorites have played at or close enough to their preseason expectations to be in the thick of the race (looking at you Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, and Ohio State) for the College Football Playoff, several have not (what’s up Clemson, Florida, Iowa State, and plenty of others?)

What will the second week of the College Football Playoff rankings look like after eight ranked teams fell this past weekend?

Kirk Herbstreit shared his new top-six on Sunday and despite ESPN’s College Gameday being at Cincinnati this past weekend for their homecoming game, Herbstreit dropped them from his top-six after he ranked them fifth a week ago.

That’s only one man’s opinion but it seems like Cincinnati was one of the biggest losers of the weekend despite being victorious.  With all of that in mind here is my best guess at what the next set of rankings will look like when they’re revealed on Tuesday night:

Fox Sports’ RJ Young updates his chaotic CFB rankings

A top-10 without Ohio State, where Alabama is ranked lower than UTSA, and Wake Forest is just outside the top-4.

It’s Georgia, and then it’s everyone else. That’s not to say Georgia is unbeatable against some of the other top teams in the nation, but when it comes to who should be No. 1 in the nation, the answer is undoubtedly the Georgia Bulldogs.

RJ Young of Fox Sports released his college football top-25 on Sunday morning. He had Georgia at No. 1, but you don’t have to scroll far to see the chaos that ensues thereafter.

Here is what into Young’s decisions:

  1. Top-25 wins (ranked at the time of the matchup)
  2. Undefeated gets you some love
  3. Being undefeated supersedes strength of schedule
  4. Results, résumé and winning matter

And here is Young’s top-10, which by the way does not include Ohio State.

Former Texas assistant Jeff Traylor among candidates to replace Matt Wells at Texas Tech

Former Texas assistant Jeff Traylor will be a hot commodity.

The head coach landscape has yet another opening following the firings of Clay Helton at USC and Ed Orgeron at LSU. The Texas Tech Red Raiders announced on Monday that they relieved Matt Wells. Athletic director Kirby Hocutt stated that the next hire would be one that will unify the fanbase.

One of the names that has been passed around is former Texas Longhorns assistant coach Jeff Traylor. Currently, Traylor has his UTSA Roadrunners in the top 25 of the AFCA Coaches Poll with an 8-0 record. During his time as the head coach, Traylor has compiled a record of 15-5 with the Roadrunners in two years.

At a late afternoon news conference, Hocutt called Wells “a very good man” and one “who always operates with integrity and character.”

“Matt Wells did a lot of things right,” Hocutt said. “The performance on the field did not match our expectations.”

Tech (5-3, 2-3 in the Big 12) has finished each of the past five seasons and six of the past seven with losing records. The Red Raiders have not finished above .500 in conference play since 2009, Mike Leach’s last season.

“We’ve got to get this right,” Hocutt said with an emphatic tone. “Bottom line, we have got to get this right for Texas Tech athletics and Texas Tech University.”

Hocutt emphasized that getting a coach with Texas ties will be important for high school connections and recruiting reasons. – Don Williams, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

A head coach candidate with high school connections seems to point straight to Traylor. He spent time as an assistant coach at Big Sandy and Jacksonville in East Texas before becoming the head coach at Gilmer High School. He joined the Longhorns staff in 2015 after 14 years with Gilmer.

Multiple coaching lists all have Traylor among the top names, as well as Sonny Dykes. Dykes is the current head coach at Southern Methodist and the son of Tech coaching legend Spike Dykes.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UTSA vs WKU Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA isn’t perfect, but the record is thanks to a formula that seems to be working just fine.

The defense leads Conference USA allowing fewer than 300 yards per game – and that’s with games against Memphis and Illinois in the mix – the offense keeps things moving on third downs, the special teams are among the best in the league, and there aren’t a slew of big mistakes to worry about.

Basically, the Roadrunners are playing like the veterans they are.

On the flip side, for all the flash, dash, and fun of the WKU offense, it’s not winning. There’s no running game, the defense can’t seem to get off the field, and the team is dead last in the nation in time of possession.

UTSA might have the ball for 40 minutes.

However …

Why WKU Will Win

To be extremely fair, while UTSA is putting back Lamar, Middle Tennessee, and UNLV, WKU was playing Army and Michigan State on the road and Indiana at home.

Can UTSA stop the pass? Short answer – not really.

Memphis and UNLV each rolled for well over 300 yards and Illinois was okay to push back late. The Roadrunners won all three games, but not it has to deal with the Hilltopper offensive machine.

Bailey Zappe continues to bomb away, averaging over 400 yards per game with three or more touchdown passes in every game. The UTSA pass rush shouldn’t matter too much in this with the offense designed to get the ball out of Zappe’s hands in a hurry, and …

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will keep playing with fire in close game after close game, but this should be when WKU finally gets on the right side on one of those tight battles.

Zappe and the passing game will keep pressing after UTSA goes on tough scoring drive after tough scoring drive, and late in the fourth he’ll come up with the late touchdown to push ahead. The Roadrunners will get last shot, but they’ll come up just short.

Notre Dame gives offer to defensive end recruit Nigel Smith

The Irish are after a young recruit to shore up their defensive line.

We’re now at the point where programs start making offers to recruits who have completed their freshman season. Notre Dame now is one of them. The Irish’s latest offer takes them to Melissa, Texas, where they are pursuing strong-side defensive end Nigel Smith:

Over the previous few minutes of making the Notre Dame offer public, Smith also announced he had received offers from North Texas and UTSA. While those programs obviously would keep him closer to home, neither Conference USA school has anything close to the history or reputation of Notre Dame. Of course, it will take more than that to convince Smith to come to South Bend.

Notre Dame already has a pair of strong-side defensive ends coming in for the 2022 season in Tyson Ford and Aiden Gobaira. They’ll also add a weak-side defensive end in Darren Agu. Here’s hoping they will be good mentors for Smith by the time he arrives if that’s indeed what happens.

Oklahoma basketball games against UTSA, UCF this week postponed due to COVID-19 issues

Oklahoma basketball’s season opener has reportedly been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests among the team.

Oklahoma basketball is going to have to wait a little bit longer to get their 2020-21 season started.

The Sooners have had positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing issues amongst the team that will keep them out of action from tonight’s schedule season opener against UTSA as well as their road game at UCF set for Saturday.

This is obviously a tough blow for an Oklahoma team that has done nothing but talk about how excited they were to retake the floor again for weeks.

The season opener, as it stands now, is now set for Wednesday Dec. 2nd at home against Florida. Sooners Wire will update on the status of that game as it approaches and more information becomes available.

Former Oklahoma DL Ron Tatum commits to UTSA

Former Oklahoma defensive lineman Ron Tatum has committed to Texas-San Antonio.

Beep beep.

Former Oklahoma defensive lineman Ron Tatum has committed to Texas-San Antonio.

Tatum, a four-star defensive end out of Oklahoma City (Putnam City High School), signed with the Sooners out of high school. Tatum was the 15th best ranked defensive end in the country and the sixth-best ranked player in the state of Oklahoma in a loaded 2018 class. After redshirting his freshman season in 2018, Tatum left the Sooners for North Eastern Oklahoma Junior College in Miami, Oklahoma.

UTSA has a 41-55 record in their eight seasons in FBS-Division I. Despite four 6+ win seasons, the Roadrunners have only been to one bowl game, losing the New Mexico Bowl following the 2016 season.

Following a 4-8 season in 2019, the Roadrunners enter their ninth FBS season looking to improve and make their second-ever bowl game.

UTSA will have a tough task ahead of them as they open the 2020 season against the same team that Oklahoma ended their 2019 season. The Roadrunners head to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers on September 5.

Tre Flowers gathers athletes in San Antonio to practice against

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tre Flowers got together a group of football players in San Antonio to practice against during quarantine.

Back in his hometown near San Antonio, Texas, waiting for training camp to begin, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tre Flowers decided to ask some local talent to help him hone his game.

He was very surprised by the response.

“I wasn’t expecting this many people, so next time we’re going to have a little organization,” Flowers told Evan Closky of KENS5 News. “Any nuggets I can give them I will give them. I’m not going to hold anything back. The Seahawks taught me ‘each one, teach one.’ So I’m going to bring it back to everybody I can.”

Flowers was joined by a handful of athletes, including a few from nearby UTSA, as well as a few high school football players in the area.

“You start off playing football saying you want to go pro, so when you have the opportunity to go against (professionals) before you get to that level, it’s great to see where you’re at,” UTSA wide receiver Sheldon Jones said.

“You always want to go compete against a man ranked better than you, compete against a man that’s already been at the college level,” Cornerstone Christian quarterback Lucas Coley added. “Just seeing how (professionals) work, you always want to outwork them.”

Flowers thanked everyone for coming out, saying he hoped he was able to help them improve – while also making sure they understood they couldn’t get anything by him.

Flowers is staying prepared for the 2020 season, where he will have to fight against Quinton Dunbar for his old job at right cornerback – unless Dunbar’s current legal issues prevent him from playing next year.

Either way, Flowers will be ready.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns Outlast UTSA to Stay Perfect

The Texas Longhorns stay perfect after riding a five-run fourth inning to help them to a 6-2 victory at the Disch.

The Texas Longhorns returned home for their first baseball game of the 2020 season at DischFalk Field in Austin. The Longhorns fell into an early 2-0 hole against the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Cole Quintanilla was on the mound and gave up just one earned run in four innings with five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the inning, the Longhorn bats came to life. With runners on the corners and one out, Trey Faltine would drive in the Longhorns first run of the game.

Texas would go on to take the lead with catcher Silas Ardoin would get his first hit as a Longhorn and it was a big one, driving in two more runs on a double.

But wait, there’s more. With runners on second and third, the man they called the hammer, Cam Williams came to the plate looking to do more damage. He hit a two-run double to left field to plate two more Longhorns. Williams was thrown out at third going for the triple to end the inning. The damage was already done and Texas led 5-2 after a five-run inning.

Texas didn’t just show off the bats in this game as they were able to show off the leather as well. In the sixth inning, Faltine scooped up the ball from deep in the hole and fired it to first to get the out. Great throw by Trey and even better scoop by Zach Zubia.

Tristan Stevens and Pete Hansen would pitch the remaining five innings of shutout baseball for Texas. They gave up a combined five hits over that span. Stevens would pick up the win and Hansen with the three-inning save. For the play of the game, that came from Austin Todd who gunned down a runner at the plate to end their scoring threat in the seventh inning.
