Bombshell: Nick Saban retiring from coaching

Holy smokes!

Perhaps the greatest coach in the history of college football is retiring.

Nick Saban, who led Alabama to national championships in six different seasons and LSU to another is stepping down.

He does so after leading Alabama to another College Football Playoff appearance this season, something the Crimson Tide did in eight of the 10 years of the playoff’s existence under Saban.

Saban is a football legend who saw as much success as anyone who has ever coached the game.

Who ends up being the next Alabama head coach is anyone’s guess but the rumors will be plentiful.

Just to throw my two sense out there – my money would be on Lane Kiffin to jump from Ole Miss.

Be sure to check into Roll Tide Wire for all the happenings as Alabama now looks to replace a true legend.

Report: Colts not expected to conduct more HC interviews

The Colts reportedly aren’t expected to conduct more head coach interviews, barring a change.

The Indianapolis Colts have conducted a thorough search for their new head coach and while there’s a chance they extend the process into a third round of interviews, it seems that is unlikely.

As Colts fans know from the Josh McDaniels and Jeff Saturday situations, anything can happen at any time in the NFL.

However, ESPN’s Stephen Holder suggests the Colts are done conducting interviews, barring a change.

Holder also reported that the length of the search was not due to indecision but that this process was deliberate in gaining as much information as possible.

This has been an exhaustive and comprehensive search done by the Colts. It’s clear they want to make the right decision on their next head coach, especially from the perspective of Chris Ballard, whose job is likely tied to the success (or lack thereof) of the new head coach.

Considering the main event of Super Bowl LVII is this week, there’s a good chance we don’t hear much news about a decision until afterward. Not that it would truly impact anything, but the league frowns upon major announcements being made during the biggest week of the year.

The Colts have seven finalists for the job, but it’s difficult to truly narrow down who the actual contenders are.

At this point, we simply have to wait and see if any more news pops up until a decision is made over the next two weeks.

Updated list of Colts’ head coach finalists

Here’s an updated look at the remaining finalists for the Colts head coach vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts continue their search for a new head coach and as they consider a third round of interviews, one candidate was taken off the board Sunday.

Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who was let out of his contract with the team over the weekend, agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers to be their new defensive coordinator. He is expected to join the staff under former Colts head coach Frank Reich.

You can follow along for the latest updates with the head coach search via our tracker. All seven finalists remaining have interviewed twice with the team.

With the news that Evero is now out of the running, here’s a quick look at the seven finalists who remain in the mix for the Colts head coach vacancy:

Colts considering ‘rare Round 3’ of head coach interviews

The Colts are reportedly considering a ‘rare Round 3’ of head coach interviews.

The Indianapolis Colts are making sure they know exactly who they want as the next head coach, which reportedly may lead to a rare third round of interviews.

While the organization has nearly concluded what is supposed to be the “finalist” round of interviews this week, of which a whopping eight candidates took part in, there’s a chance a third round of meetings will take place.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the third round of interviews would include a smaller group of candidates.

It has been an exhausting process thus far, and general manager Chris Ballard is putting a new definition to “leaving no stone unturned.” We can hardly blame him, though, considering he’s fired if this next head coach doesn’t pan out.

The other candidates who have received a second interview include:

Dan Quinn pulls name from Colts’ head coach search

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn pulled his name from Colts’ head coach search.

The Indianapolis Colts had plans to interview Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn for their head coach vacancy, but he informed the team he is pulling his name from the search.

Quinn was scheduled to have his second interview with the Colts on Saturday after being viewed as a finalist and a reported “top candidate” for the head coach vacancy.

Instead, he decided to withdraw his name from the candidacy and opted to remain with the Cowboys.

The Colts have gotten into the second round of interviews this week—a process that’s expected to go into next week.

They’ve already interviewed interim head coach Jeff Saturday and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero a second time. They have plans to interview Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris a second time Friday.

The Colts also may have their eyes on some of the coordinators playing in the conference championship games, including Shane Steichen, Eric Bieniemy and Brian Callahan.

However, the Colts cannot interview them a second time until after the Sunday games have concluded, regardless of their outcomes.

Colts plan to interview seven finalists for head coach vacancy

The Colts reportedly plan to interview seven finalists for their head coach vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts are conducting their second round of interviews as they narrow down the list of finalists, and it appears they have a plan to bring the number of candidates down to seven.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts are planning to interview seven finalists for the head coach vacancy. That number is subject to change considering the fluidity of the situation, but it helps narrow down who the candidates might be.

As of Thursday, the Colts have interviewed two finalists for the job. Interim head coach Jeff Saturday got his second interview Wednesday while Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero conducted his interview Thursday.

The Colts also have plans to interview Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris on Friday and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn on Saturday.

That’s four candidates already being interviewed as finalists with room for three more if the team is set on having seven candidates. A number of candidates that have already been interviewed are coaching in the conference championship round of the playoffs, including Shane Steichen, Eric Bieniemy and Brian Callahan.

All three of those candidates can be interviewed a second time after the conference championship games conclude, regardless of the outcome.

The Colts had plans to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, but he canceled last weekend to focus on their divisional-round playoff game against the Cowboys.

However, because the Colts didn’t interview Ryans before the divisional round, they cannot interview him until after the Super Bowl is concluded, per NFL rules.

This process is expected to extend into next week, but we’re getting closer to a conclusion.

Report: Dan Quinn ‘a top candidate’ for the Colts

The Colts want a second interview with Dan Quinn, who reportedly is ‘a top candidate’ for Indy.

The Indianapolis Colts are moving forward into the second phase of their head coaching search, and it appears one of the finalists is Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

While the Colts will continue to narrow down their list of finalists for the head coach vacancy, Quinn is reportedly “a top candidate” for the Colts, along with the Denver Broncos, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

You can follow along for the latest updates with the head coach search via our tracker. We also ranked the head coach candidates following the first round of interviews.

The Colts interviewed 13 candidates virtually during the first two weeks of the offseason since their regular season ended. Quinn was one of the latest interviews, but it seems he impressed enough to warrant a second in-person interview.

The Cowboys lost against the San Francisco 49ers during the divisional playoff round Sunday so the Colts don’t have to wait to interview Quinn.

Quinn is one of the more seasoned veteran coaches in the running for the Colts head coach vacancy, and he seems to be in the archetype the team wants as its new head coach.

Reuniting Quinn with quarterback Matt Ryan would make for an interesting decision, especially considering the cash-strapped Colts could use the $17.2 million they would save by releasing the veteran signal-caller.

There are likely to be more names popping up for second interviews and while this one isn’t set yet, we should expect it to come at some point this week.

In total, the Colts have interviewed 13 candidates since the end of the regular season, two of which were in-house interviews (Bubba Ventrone, Jeff Saturday). It isn’t clear if the interview will take place.
