UTSA vs Texas Southern Game Preview

Why Texas Southern Will Win

The Tigers have a good enough rushing offense to matter.

The’ve come up with with six interceptions so far in the three games, and the secondary hasn’t allowed too much through the air, but it’s the ground attack that needs to take over with a few good options to choose from.

For all of the good things UTSA is doing, it’s having a hard time coming up with third down stops, it’s allowing 39 points per game, and  the run D is allowing 206 yards per game. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why UTSA Will Win

Texas Southern isn’t Army running the ball.

It’s not Texas or Houston, either.

Texas Southern is a well-earned break for a UTSA that fought the good fight over the first three games and should be 2-1 right now.

Frank Harris continues to be among the best relatively unknown quarterbacks in the country, The UTSA ground attack that hasn’t been able to break free so far shouldn’t have much of a problem, and turnovers haven’t been an issue.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Southern will bring the effort and have enough pop to put some points on the board, but the UTSA offense will go off in the first half and cruise in the second.

Again, after the first three games, the Roadrunners deserve this.

Texas vs UTSA Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

How does Texas pick it back up after that?

Sure, there’s a moral victory of pushing the then-No. 1 team in the nation to the brink, but to get so close and come up with that good of a performance only to lose in such painful fashion …

Again, how do you gear up for a team you’re supposed to beat, but has the potential to make a bad situation a whole lot worse?

UTSA has been solid. It came very, very close to getting past Houston, and it got the job done against a good Army team that wasn’t able to get its ground game going.

The Roadrunner offense – directed by nationally underappreciated QB Frank Harris – is owning third downs, the run defense is holding up just fine overall, and there’s no fear factor here. This team is going to bring the big-time effort on both sides of the ball.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Texas Will Win

It’s not all perfect for UTSA, though.

The offensive line is struggling to keep defenses away from Harris, the D isn’t getting off the field, and penalties were a wee bit of an issue.

And then there’s the secondary. Houston didn’t bomb away for big yards, but Clayton Tune was able to dinking and dunk without a problem. Army – yeah, that Army – was hitting the deep shots to try keeping up the pace.

Alabama needed to grab, grab, and grab some more to keep Xavier Worthy and the Texas receivers from getting loose. As long as the Longhorn O line can keep the Roadrunner pass rush from going off, the downfield plays will be there.

Now …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s going to be the Texas quarterback?

Steve Sarkisian is being very, very coy on the status of Quinn Ewers after getting full body mashed by Bama. His injured left shoulder is supposedly okay – to a point – and backup Hudson Card isn’t considered out despite his ankle injury. However, they’re both far from 100%, and there’s no sure-thing time they’re expected to be back. That, and superstar RB Bijan Robinson is hurting, too.

Oh, and UTSA is good enough to win this.

This is one of those moments for Texas football.

It’s coming off the soul-crushing loss, it’s stars are hurting, it has a true to Texas Tech up next week to start Big 12 play, and UTSA has the makeup to roll into town and pull a Week 3 version of Appalachian State or Marshall.

Texas will get out of this. The defense will play well again, there will be just enough big plays through the air, and it’ll be a survive-and-advance game after a whole lot of sweating.

Texas vs UTSA: Quarterback Tale of the Tape

Which quarterback has the edge on Saturday?

After coming close to pulling off the upset, the Texas Longhorns are once again set for battle at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. However, for the first time in 2022, they will have a quarterback other than Quinn Ewers leading the charge this season.

Ewers suffered a shoulder injury early on against the Alabama Crimson Tide that will sideline him for up to six weeks per some reports. This puts [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] back into the starting lineup as the starting quarterback.

On Saturday it will be Card and the Longhorns taking on instate foe, Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners are coached by former assistant Jeff Traylor. Their quarterback is senior Frank Harris. Harris led UTSA to a 12-2 record and the Conference USA championship. This is his fourth year in the program.

This game between Texas and UTSA will be the first-ever meeting, the Roadrunners began playing football in 2011. Their next meeting will happen in the 2024 season.

Longhorns Wire takes a look at how they compared situationally in 2021:

Nearly beating No. 1 Alabama means its the perfect time to fade Texas in Week 3

History says the Longhorns are headed for a major letdown as double-digit favorites against UTSA

How about those Texas Longhorns?

Facing the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (-20.5)—and essentially every public bettor in existence—head coach Steve Sarkisian nearly became the third-ever former Nick Saban assistant to defeat his old boss. And that was despite losing elite quarterback Quinn Ewers to a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

No big deal for the Longhorns. They simply inserted backup Hudson Card and relied on a defense that kept the Tide at bay for nearly four quarters. Alabama wound up winning 20-19 but that’s just because Texas ran out of time, per Sarkisian. Voters for the AP Top 25 seemed to agree. Even with the loss at home, Texas went from unranked to No. 21 in the latest poll.

And with unranked UTSA up next in Week 3 that means there’s only one thing to do….Fade Texas.

Fade the Longhorns hard. Don’t even look in their direction. Grab the Roadrunners while they’re still double-digit underdogs and shout “meep meep” all the way to the bank.

[betwidget_betmgm]

If you were one of the lucky ones who grabbed UTSA +12.5 when the line opened up, congratulations, because it sure didn’t last long. Within hours the points started shifting away from Texas and it’s not hard to see why. This isn’t just about a potential letdown game—though that potential certainly exists. This is about a UTSA team that’s 2-0 against the spread and took No. 24 Houston to overtime in a 37-35 loss before beating Army, 41-38, in Week 2. The Roadrunners rank 11th in FBS passing yards (348 per game) are allowing just 190 yards rushing per game and have yet to turn the ball over.

But let’s go back to that idea of a letdown game for a moment. Looking at the last few times Texas thought it was “back” over the previous years is all the evidence you need to convince yourself the Longhorns, in fact, are not.

  • In 2021, after beating No. 23 Louisiana in Week 1, Texas was a -5.5 favorite at Arkansas in week 2. The Longhorns lost, 40-21.
  • In 2020, Texas lost to Oklahoma, 53-45 in four overtimes, then pushed as an 11-point favorite against Baylor the following week.
  • In 2019, Texas covered +11.5 against Oklahoma only to squeak out a two-point victory against Kansas the following week as 20-point favorites—kicking off a stretch where Texas went 1-4 against the spread.
  • In 2018, Texas beat OU as a seven-point favorite, then failed to cover the spread each of the next three games against Baylor, Oklahoma State and West Virginia (a push).

Now remember that Ewers will be out for 4-6 weeks and Card will make just his third career start against a team that has a full week to prepare for him.

Action Network is already tracking a much bigger handle on UTSA than the Longhorns. While Texas has received 60 percent of all bets on the spread, 88 percent of the early money is on UTSA to cover.

This is very likely to become a shootout in Austin. If that’s the case, any line that has UTSA as double-digit underdogs is worth grabbing immediately. It may not stay like that for long.

Army vs UTSA Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA did everything against Houston but actually win the game.

The offense didn’t control the clock, and the third down stops weren’t there, but QB Frank Harris was great, the defense was fantastic until the final few minutes, and overall the team showed just how good it still is after the breakthrough 2021.

The linebackers and defensive front kept the Cougar running backs under wraps. There weren’t any big bursts from the UH ground game – QB Clayton Tune ended up being the top runner with 51 yards – as the Roadrunners swarmed all game long.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Army Will Win

Army actually showed a little … balance?

It was a tough 38-28 loss to UTSA with the defense struggling late and the offense not being able to do what it normally does – control the clock. That’s not going to be a problem against a UTSA team that had the ball for just over 24 minutes against the Cougars.

The Army offense kept up the pace, it came up with 118 yards through the air on its four completions – that counts as balance in this attack – and it should be able to control the game throughout as long as the run defense can hold up.

Houston struggle to get the win because it couldn’t convert decent drives into points and it kept shooting itself in the foot with penalties and mistakes. Neither area should be an issue for the Black Knights.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This week, UTSA’s inability to come up with third down stops is going to be deadly.

Coastal Carolina was the right team with the right makeup to handle what Army needed to do. UTSA has the talent and ability to pull off the road win, but Army’s ground game will be far more effective this week.

At home, with the O having the ball for well over 35 minutes, the D will be rested late.

Houston vs UTSA Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

This is when the Houston passing game should take off.

The ground game will be great with a deep rotation at running back to work with, and there are a slew of good offensive linemen to play around with, but it’ll be QB Clayton Tune and his great receiving corps that should be able to take over the game at times.

UTSA is rock-solid on both sides of the ball, but the secondary – as talent as it is – has to be better after allowing 258 yards per game last season, there has to be more of a pass rush, and the offense could stand to come up with a few more big plays deep.

The D that led the AAC last season should be every bit as strong, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA has the toughness, the makeup, and the experience to pull this off. It all starts on the lines.

The Roadrunners have a good base with four starters returning on the offensive front, and the defensive line should be active against the run, even if it doesn’t get into the backfield enough.

Frank Harris is a fantastic all-around veteran quarterback who won’t be fazed in any way by the big better, the receiving corps is loaded with options, and overall, the team won’t make a ton of big mistakes.

The defense is once again going to be great at taking the ball away, the kicking game will be strong again, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Houston’s got the defensive front and secondary to hold up.

The corners might be a question mark, but the safety play will be great, the pass rush will bother Harris enough to matter, and the group will come up with enough third down stops to survive.

The offense might not be quite as consistent enough to make this easy, but it’ll come up with the scoring drives in the second quarter to make UTSA press. Harris will get the team close late, but will come up just short.

It’s going to be one of the most fun games on Saturday.

2023 NFL Draft: 15 players to watch during the Houston vs. UTSA matchup

Fifteen 2023 NFL Draft prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch during the Houston vs. UTSA matchup

The 2022-23 college football season is upon, and with the NFL season a little under a week away, the intertwining of draft talk and prospect watching will now commence.

Philadelphia has a ton of NFL draft assets for 2023 and 2024.

With Howie Roseman looking to inject even more youth into a talented roster, this college football season will provide the best overall group of talent to enter the league in years.

There are plenty of opening weekend matchups to watch, and one intriguing showcase will pit the Houston Cougars against the UTSA Roadrunners at the Alamodome.

Houston is looking towards a potential berth in the College Football Playoffs, and they’ll look to avoid a potential stumbling block in this road date against the reigning Conference USA champion Roadrunners.

Head coach Jeff Traylor has a winning formula with UTSA, and the contest could be a shootout, with two talented quarterbacks under center for both teams.

The Cougars went 12-2 last year and are ranked inside the Top 25 to open the season for the first time since 2016.

UTSA is also coming off a successful season, going undefeated in its first 11 games and finishing with a 12-2 overall record.

With the kickoff scheduled for Saturday afternoon, here are 15 prospects to watch on both teams.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.
