UTEP vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP is actually playing well in tight games.

It’s not beating anyone great, but who cares? Southern Miss isn’t all that great.

The Miners are getting timely play from their defense, they’re great overall at holding on to the ball – at least when it comes to controlling the clock – and the offensive line isn’t allowing anything behind the line.

On the flip side, the Southern Miss offense isn’t going anywhere. There’s no running game over the last three weeks and there are way, way too many turnovers. But …

Why Southern Miss Will Win

UTEP’s offense isn’t exactly lighting it up.

The defense has been solid, but there’s no running game over the last three weeks, the team hasn’t hit 350 yards of total offense during the span, and there are way, way too many penalties, special teams issues, and mediocre passing problems for a team that’s 4-1.

Southern Miss is way overdue for a good day.

The passing game worked in the 24-19 loss to Rice, there’s good pressure from the defensive front, and UTEP isn’t going to run the ball.

What’s Going To Happen

Is UTEP really good enough to be 5-1?

Southern Miss has to finally get the O going against an FBS team, but the Miners are playing just well enough defensively to pull this off. However, both teams are overdue to go the other way with their respective momentum.

UTEP’s wins have come at home, with the exception of the layup against New Mexico State. Southern Miss went on the road to deal with Alabama and Rice, and this week the passing game should click just enough to push ahead and finally get something positive going after a rough start.

A lot of former Michigan State Football players have been finding new homes lately via the NCAA transfer portal, but another Spartan has found a new home as well, and he’s not a player. It was announced on Friday that former Spartan offensive coordinator Dave Warner will become the new offensive coordinator at UTEP.

Warner spent was with MSU during the entire Mark Dantonio era, where he served as the quarterbacks coach from 2007-12 and then again in 2019, and also as the co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach from 2013-18.

He will now get another chance to coach offenses, which he has had success with in the past at UTEP.

Throwback Thursday: Longhorns over UTEP 41-7

On this date in 2016, the Texas Longhorns and UTEP Miners met at DKR. In a throwback Thursday we look back at the Texas win.

The Texas Longhorns are preparing to host the UTEP Miners on Saturday in their first game of the year. However, it was four years ago on this date they these two teams last met. The quarterback for the Longhorns was Shane Buechele, starting for then head coach Charlie Strong. It was the second game following ESPN’s Joe Tessitore claiming “Texas is back folks!”

NBA All-Star forward and former Texas Longhorn Kevin Durant was on hand for this game. Durant was on the sideline to take in this game. Unlike the previous game, the Longhorns weren’t expecting much of a fight from UTEP.

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

The Miners started off the game getting the ball first, however after a three and out the Longhorns got the ball. It started out as a promising drive. In fact it started inside UTEP territory after an Armanti Foreman return of nine yards. Texas would fumble the ball away but after another three and out, Texas got the party started.

Following a Jake Oliver catch for 10 yards and a personal foul from the Miners, Texas quarterback Shane Buechele found former quarterback Jerrod Heard for a 29-yard touchdown catch in the front corner of the endzone. That gave Texas the early 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Longhorns would add a field goal. They were set up when Brandon Jones blocked a punt from UTEP deep in Miners territory. The offense would go three and out before Trent Domingue 33-yard field goal.

On a third and one for the Miners, future Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones goes 51 yards for the touchdown. Texas lead cut down to just three. Unfortunately for the Miners, that would be their entire offense on the day. Texas would add another field goal to go up six. Buechele would find Jacorey Warrick for a touchdown just before the half. That made up for his fumble on the opening drive that robbed Texas of a touchdown.

Texas would outscore UTEP 21-0 in the second half. Chris Warren III started it off with a one-yard run midway through the third. Buechele would connect with Dorian Leonard for a 46-yard touchdown, Texas led at that point 34-7 with 6:07 left in the quarter.

Early on the fourth quarter Buechele would find Jerrod Heard again giving him his second touchdown of the game. Not a bad way to spend your birthday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas would win this game 41-7.

Key Stats:

Buechele: 22/27 244 yards 4 TDs

Warren: 20 carries 95 yards 1 TD

Warrick: 7 receptions 73 yards 1 TD

Leonard: 2 receptions 52 yards 1 TD

Heard: 6 receptions 46 yards 2 TDs

Texas expected opener vs UTEP on Sept. 12, Big 12 play begins Sept. 29

Texas’ season will begin on Sept. 12 against UTEP. Before the 9+1 schedule, UTEP was scheduled to travel to Austin on Sept. 19.

According to 247Sports, Texas’ season will begin on Sept. 12 against UTEP. Before the Big 12 announced a 9+1 schedule, the Miners were scheduled to travel to Austin a week later on Sept. 19.

The conference schedule will kick off Sept. 26 after a bye week. If the Big 12 goes off the Longhorns current schedule, Kansas State will be the opening game. However, 247Sports is reporting the schedule may get switched up.

Based on the new start date, here is Texas’ schedule based on the current lineup.

  • Sept. 12 – UTEP
  • Sept. 19 – BYE
  • Sept. 26 – @ Kansas State
  • Oct. 3 – Oklahoma (Dallas)
  • Oct. 10 – West Virginia
  • Oct. 17 – @ Texas Tech
  • Oct. 24 – Baylor
  • Oct. 31 – @ Kansas
  • Nov. 7 – TCU
  • Nov. 14 – Iowa State
  • Nov. 21 – @ Oklahoma State

Most importantly, the Red River Shootout is still planned to be in Dallas. Texas and Oklahoma have played in the historic Cotton Bowl every year since 1929. It is a very real possibility that the Big 12 could look to move back the Texas-Oklahoma game.

Another option would be spacing out some of the games to allow for multiple bye weeks with so much uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season. The conference needs to take in account the possibility for games being postponed due to COVID-19 positive cases. Spacing out some of these games would allow for makeup dates.

A cancellation of games due to a spike in coronavirus cases could impact the Big 12 Championship game set for mid to late December. Keep tuned into Longhorns Wire as we will keep you up to date on the upcoming season. The conference is expected to release the official schedule in the coming weeks.

Report: Big 12 Conference to go with a 10-game schedule

Max Olson of the Athletic is reporting that the Big 12 Conference will go with a 10-game schedule. Who Texas plays is a bit tricky.

Following a meeting with all of the athletic directors from across the Big 12 Conference, there was no decision made on the upcoming schedule late last week. Monday was supposed to be the Big 12’s virtual media day but it was cancelled following the schedule announcement by the SEC. According to Max Olson and Nicole Auerbach of the Athletic, the Big 12 will go with a nine plus one schedule.

This should come as no surprise as it was widely speculated that the Big 12 would go with this model. For the Longhorns they have two teams on their nonconference schedule remaining after the Louisiana State game was cancelled. The Longhorns were scheduled to open the season with South Florida on September 5th and Texas-El Paso on September 19th. So which game will they have?

Conventional wisdom leads you to believe they would host UTEP at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in mid September. That is where it gets a bit tricky. UTEP is also scheduled to play Texas Tech in the nonconference portion of the schedule. Texas Tech lost one of their opponents in Arizona when the Pac-12 Conference cancelled all of their nonconference games. That leaves UTEP and Alabama State for the Red Raiders. Alabama State’s season was postponed on July 20th.

So who would play UTEP as the lone game of the nonconference schedule in the Big 12? Well, Tech is closer geographically to El Paso than the Miners are to Austin. They might lean in their favor. The only question is would Texas keep South Florida on the schedule? Much like the state of Texas, Florida is a hotbed for the coronavirus.

Stay tuned to Longhorns Wire as we keep you up to date.

DE Roy Robertson-Harris signs tender, returns to Bears

The Bears returned an essential part of their DL, announcing that DE Roy Robertson-Harris has signed his 2nd-round tender.

The Chicago Bears took care of some internal business just one week ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, announcing they re-signed restricted free agent defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris to a one-year deal.

The Bears placed a second-round tender on Robertson-Harris prior to free agency, which he signed on Wednesday afternoon. The move keeps him in Chicago through the 2020 season and allows the defense to retain one of its important rotational players.

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2016, Robertson-Harris worked to become an essential piece on the defensive line. He saw the field for the first time in 2017 and has become increasingly involved in the defensive game-plan each year. Last season, the former UTEP standout totaled 30 tackles, two and a half sacks and three pass deflections in 15 games.

Robertson-Harris will become an unrestricted free agent in the spring of 2021.
