Twitter reacts to Notre Dame touchdown off blocked punt

Can’t end your first defensive possession better than this.

If you thought [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag]’s two blocked punts in the first quarter against UNLV were impressive, how about something to top it? Specifically, how about Notre Dame’s punt return team doing it to put points on the board against Clemson? To conclude the Irish’s first defensive possession, [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] blocked Adam Swanson’s would-be punt, and [autotag]Prince Kollie[/autotag] scooped up the loose ball for a 17-yard touchdown to put the Irish up, 7-0:

If you’re going to play spoiler against a College Football Playoff contender, this is one heck of a way to start it off. Notre Dame Stadium was up for grabs after this and so probably were Irish watch parties all over. We have no idea if the Irish will be able to repeat what they did against the Tigers on this exact field two years ago, but they’re showing they won’t just lay down in this game either.

Here are some of the best Twitter reactions to the big play from Irish fans:

UNLV vs San Diego State Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

Give San Diego State long enough and it’ll figure out how to screw it up.

Who gives up two touchdowns in 13 seconds – helped by not getting to a perfect onside kick – to give away a brutal 32-28 loss to Fresno State?

The team loves to get hit with flags – ten or more in three of the last five games and eight killers last week against the Bulldogs, along with five turnovers – and it’s wildly inconsistent on both sides of the ball.

UNLV doesn’t throw a ton of interceptions, it should be able to run reasonably well at times considering its style, and it’s facing one of the few teams in America that’s worse on third downs.

However …

Why San Diego State Will Win

Penalties and last week’s turnover issues aside, the team is close to finding a nice mix again.

It has its quarterback in Jalen Mayden – he all but saved the season when he moved over from defensive back and started slinging it around – and the defense seems to be starting to get its toughness mojo back from last year.

UNLV might be rested after a week off, but it’s going to have to rev up the scoring punch in a hurry after having a hard time getting going since late September.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

San Diego State will pick itself up off the mat in a hurry. It’s going to start with the ground game.

Air Force runs against everyone, but San Jose State and Notre Dame were able to plow away with ease, too, over the last few weeks.

Mayden will be solid, but it’ll be a rotation of backs and a nice day from the Aztec defensive front that will get everyone over the debacle in Fresno.

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame at Syracuse

Can the Irish survive the Dome?

Finally, there is enough interest in Notre Dame that people are predicting one of its games again. Still, it’s worth wondering if it would be happening this week were Syracuse not ranked. You have to hate that we’re having this discussion, but alas.

Let’s look at what some college football experts, including fellow College Wire sites, are predicting for this game:

Notre Dame defensive end earns national recognition for performance against UNLV

After that performance, who didn’t noticed the Irish’s star

This past weekend might as well be remembered as the [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] game. The junior defense end finally came around with a performance many expected this fall, racking up three sacks against a over-manned UNLV team.

Not only did Foskey take down the quarterback three times, he blocked two punts as well, marking a stellar performance from the potential early enrollee to the NFL Draft. The game will be on multiple highlight reels as teams decide if they will take Foskey but before they’re able to do that, the Paul Hornung Award recognized Foskey for his performance last weekend, putting him on their honor roll this week.

The Hornung Award is given out to the most versatile player in college football and what Foskey accomplished last weekend caught the eye of their selection committee. Hopefully this is the beginning of a frantic finish for Foskey, as the Irish have three remaining opponents that are ranked left on the 2022 schedule, starting this weekend against Syracuse.

Notre Dame gets much needed home win vs. UNLV: Best photos

Some parts were better than others but all the pictures are nice

I don’t think it’ll win an Academy Award for best picture but Notre Dame got what they needed more than anything Saturday and that’s simply getting a home victory over UNLV.

Although the stats were fairly dominant and the issue was never really in doubt, there were plenty of things that again showed they need improvement – mainly involving the red zone offense and defense.

Regardless, now Notre Dame gets ready to hit the road next week as they’ll take on a Syracuse team who is fresh off a road loss against Clemson.

As we start to move on to that game, here is a look back at Notre Dame’s win with the best photos from Saturday.

Notre Dame-UNLV: 6 Numbers that told the story

Numbers from Notre Dame’s win over UNLV that tell the story of the game as well as Notre Dame’s 2022 season.

Notre Dame improved to 4-3 with a 44-21 win over UNLV on Saturday afternoon.  The final score indicates a blowout and it was, but it was also a game that left a lot to be desired by the Irish as a whole.

Missed tackles remain an incredible issue for this squad as do red zone issues as the offense continues to leave handfuls upon handfuls of points on the field each week.

Notre Dame is 4-3 and two wins away from bowl eligibility but remains in need of significant upgrades before a return to anything of real significance can arrive.

Here is a look behind a handful of numbers from Notre Dame’s victory that speaks to both some of the good and some of the glaring issues.

How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-UNLV: Rebels side

Rebels fans don’t seem too disappointed.

UNLV fans couldn’t have entered their team’s game with Notre Dame feeling good about their chances. They once again were missing quarterback Doug Brumfield, and this game also lacked top Rebels running back Aidan Robbins. Maybe the contest indeed would have been closer with those two in the game. That’s all we’re left to do as the Rebels lost, 44-21, to make it three consecutive defeats after three straight wins.

The good news for the Rebels is that pretty much every remaining opponent is below them in the Mountain West West Division, so they aren’t out of the running for the conference title yet. Still, it’s going to be a difficult road ahead if they don’t get the aforementioned offensive skills players back soon. Although Rebels fans will have plenty of time to wonder about that, the upsetting thing now is that their team lost. Here’s what some of them said on Twitter after the loss to the Irish:

How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-UNLV: Irish side

What are your thoughts on this game?

Notre Dame needed to get back over .500 in the worst way, and it did that with a 44-21 win over UNLV. No, a 4-3 record isn’t going to bring back a lot of the national attention that has been lost recently, but it’s a good step back towards respectability. And besides, the Irish needed to take some good vibes into a difficult two-game stretch against Syracuse and Clemson. With their bowl fate potentially on the line, a loss to the Rebels would not have motivated them at all.

Irish fans should be happy just to get back in the win column. Many took to Twitter after the game to express that happiness, but others weren’t so happy. Of course, they also probably are nervous deep down because the aforementioned tough stretch to come. However, the real nerves can come when they need to come, so how about some (mostly) good thoughts in the meantime?

Notre Dame earns fourth win: 5 instant takeaways

Perhaps the only redeeming event of the afternoon…was that this game was on Peacock and the masses didn’t experience it.

Walk with me here for a second as we discuss the college football game that was played on the campus of the University of Notre Dame on Saturday.

Notre Dame improved to 4-3 on the year with a 44-21 victory that I can only describe by the following.
Imagine that instead of being a football game, this game was instead a brain.
Now take that brain and insert it in a parakeet.
Suddenly that parakeet would only fly backward.
Notre Dame moved to 4-3 in a game that was made for Peacock.  Perhaps the only redeeming event of the afternoon, besides the Irish not getting upset as a massive favorite for a third time this year, was that this game was on Peacock and the masses didn’t experience it.
With all of that in mind, here are five instant takeaways from Notre Dame’s win over UNLV.

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s Chris Tyree’s fourth-quarter touchdown

Nice score.

Notre Dame probably needed one more score to make it incredibly difficult for UNLV to come back. The Irish had given up a touchdown, making the score 30-14. Then, they had a run-heavy drive that began in the third quarter and ended in the fourth. [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] did most of the carrying, but it was [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag] who ran for an 8-yard touchdown to put the Irish up, 37-14:

It’s nice to see Tyree make a difference on the scoreboard during a season when he is becoming more and more forgotten with the emergence of [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag]. Even if this touchdown served as little more than insurance for the Irish, the fact that he’s made a difference in the score at all has to be fulfilling for him. Maybe this is the motivation he needs to have an amazing rest of the year. For now, he surely will be happy to read tweets like these:
