Pro Day roundup: Jaguars well-represented at South Carolina workout

The Jaguars are making the pro day rounds, which has included stops at South Carolina, Texas, and Clemson.

Teams across the NFL are dishing out big money to acquire free agents, but the Jacksonville Jaguars have been watching from the sideline.

After weeks of reports that the Jaguars are focusing on building through the 2023 NFL Draft following their 2022 spending spree, those prognostications have come to fruition. Through the first 24 hours of the legal tampering period, Jacksonville reached no agreements with any pending free agents and watched as right tackle Jawaan Taylor and tight end Chris Manhertz found deals elsewhere.

Much of the Jaguars’ attention was instead in Columbia, S.C. where the South Carolina Gamecocks held their pro day. Reportedly in attendance for the workout were the team’s defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend and defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

South Carolina has one of the top cornerback prospects in Cam Smith as well as cornerback Darius Rush, who may be a Day 2 selection. The Gamecocks also have defensive tackle Zacch Pickens, who was put through his Monday workout by Buckner.

Pickens measured in at 6’4, 291 pounds at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. He was one of six defensive tackles at the event to finish his 40-yard dash in under 4.9 seconds and one of four to eclipse 30 inches in the vertical jump.

Other pro days:

  • The Jaguars were one of two teams (along with the Buccaneers) present at the Southeastern University Pro Day, according to running back Bryan Bell. The back was a four-time All-Conference selection in the NAIA’s Sun Conference.
  • The Jaguars were one of six teams spotted at the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks Pro Day. The top prospect to watch was Mac Hippenhammer, a former Penn State receiver who twice earned All-MAC honors after transferring in 2020.
  • All 32 teams were reportedly in attendance at the Texas Pro Day. The headliner, running back Bijan Robinson, didn’t participate but Texas also has defensive lineman Moro Ojomo and running back Roschon Johnson among the other notables.
  • The Jaguars were among 13 teams at the UNLV Pro Day last week where all eyes were on linebackers Adam Plant Jr. and Austin Ajake.
  • All 32 teams were in attendance at the Clemson Pro Day on Tuesday where pass rusher Myles Murphy, defensive lineman Bryan Bresee, and linebacker Trenton Simpson are all hoping to be first-round selections.

Chiefs scouts attend Texas, Purdue, UNLV and Columbia pro days

#Chiefs scouts have been in attendance for Texas, Purdue, UNLV and Columbia pro days thus far.

It’s officially pro day season for the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the NFL.

Scouts hit the road to get a final look at all the draft-eligible players ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. They’ll hone in on those players who weren’t participants in All-Star games or at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, gathering information to help them make the best decisions possible in April’s draft and in undrafted free agency. They’ll also look to fill in the blanks on those players who didn’t work out in full at the combine.

With several key pro days kicking off earlier this week, here’s a look at those that we’ve confirmed the Chiefs were in attendance for:

Jaguars reportedly hire UNLV OC Nick Holz as pass game coordinator

The Jaguars found their replacement for Jim Bob Cooter in the college ranks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t take long to fill the vacancy left by Jim Bob Cooter’s departure. After the team’s former pass game coordinator left to become the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, the Jaguars landed on UNLV offensive coordinator Nick Holz to take over the role, according to Mia O’Brien of 1010XL.

Holz, 38, spent a decade in the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders organization, joining the team as an offensive assistant in 2012 and working his way up to assistant wide receivers coach. He left the Raiders to take over as the UNLV offensive coordinator in 2022.

In his only season at UNLV, the team averaged 26.3 points per game, up from 20.8 points in the year prior to his arrival.

The Jaguars don’t need to reinvent the wheel in 2023 after finding breakout success on offense in their first season with Doug Pederson. The pass game led the way with Trevor Lawrence emerging as a star in his second season with 25 passing touchdown, eight interceptions, and five rushing touchdowns.

In addition to Holz and Pederson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy will play a significant role in Lawrence’s continued development.

Raiders adding UNLV alum, former Commanders OC Scott Turner to staff

Former Commanders OC Scott Turner, UNLV alum, son of Norv Turner joining Raiders to staff

Even without Josh McDaniels letting go of any coaches on his staff from last season, he has added a new assistant. He is former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Scott Turner.

Turner was the OC in Washington under Ron Rivera the past three seasons. He’s also the son of former longtime NFL offensive guru and Raiders head coach Norv Turner.

Prior to his three seasons in Washington, Scott was a QB coach with the Panthers for two season and with the Vikings for three season before that.

Cam Newton had his second best season in terms of passing touchdowns (24) and passer rating (94) in 2018 under Turner. And Teddy Bridgewater went to his only Pro Bowl under Turner in 2015.

Oregon women’s basketball a 4-seed in early NCAA tourney projections

As things stand, the Oregon women’s basketball team is set to be a 4-seed and have Eugene be a site for the NCAA tournament.

It’s been a successful season thus far for the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team and the first projections for the NCAA tournament reflect it.

ESPN’s Charlie Creme’s bracketology is out and right now, the Ducks are a 4-seed and will open the tourney with 13-seed UNLV in Eugene. 5-seed Oklahoma and 12-seed South Dakota State are also projected to play inside Matthew Knight Arena.

Oregon, as are 31 other teams, will be in the Seattle Regional. This is a major change in the structure of the tournament. There are just two regional sites with Greensboro, SC being the other site that would host a whole Sweet 16. This is how ESPN explains it:

The women’s NCAA tournament will undergo significant change for the second consecutive season. The field expanded to 68 teams last year. This season, the customary four regional sites have been reduced to two: Seattle and Greenville, South Carolina. The top 16 teams will continue to host the first and second rounds, and the First Four games will again be played at the site of the first-round games to which they feed.

The Final Four is in Dallas.

The other Pac-12 teams included are Stanford (1-seed) 2 Utah (2-seed), UCLA (3-seed), Arizona (5-seed), and Colorado (10-seed).

Oregon State and USC are officially on the bubble.

Of course, there are still two months left in the regular season and a lot can change over that time, for better or worse.

At 11-3 overall, the Ducks have plenty of time to increase that seed and they will continue Pac-12 play this weekend by going down to the desert to take on Arizona State and Arizona.

Nevada vs UNLV What’s Going To Happen

The battle for the Fremont Cannon will have to be it.

UNLV should’ve at least come into this with bowl eligibility on the line, but instead it couldn’t get by a bad Hawaii team as part of a brutal six-game losing streak to ensure a losing season.

It could be worse – Nevada is on a nine-game losing streak after starting 2-0.

The Wolf Pack offense never got going and now it just stopped. The passing game that was supposed to work is struggling just to complete passes, the ground game isn’t making up for it, and the defense is coming off two ugly poundings from Boise State and Fresno State.

UNLV’s passing game will be decent, the defense will hold down the Nevada running game, and after two losses in the series it’s about to take the rivalry back.

Why UNLV Will Win

Hawaii keeps on struggling defensively with no pass rush and not enough big stops. It’s plucky, but the wins aren’t coming even with the improved offensive production.

UNLV is struggling with a five game losing streak, but the defense hasn’t been bad against the run over the last few weeks and the offense has the upside to finally break out a bit.

Yeah, it’s a long losing streak, but all five were against teams that will go bowling. Now the Rebels get to play someone their own size, but …

Why Hawaii Will Win

Again, Hawaii is fighting at home.

It fought back in a 27-20 loss to Wyoming, and it put up 541 yards in last week’s loss to Utah State.

This isn’t the high-octane passing team it’s going to be once head coach Timmy Chang gets all his guys in place. The UNLV pass defense hasn’t been anything special and should give up well over 200 yards, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The UNLV passing attack will take over.

This isn’t Tennessee winging it all around the yard, but the offense should have few problems coming up with more than 200 yards – the Rebels are 4-0 when coming up with 210 yards or more.

Hawaii has allowed over 210 passing yards five times against FBS teams and lost all five of them. It’ll make it close, but there won’t be enough in the fourth quarter.

Fresno State vs UNLV Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

QB Jake Haener is back, and Fresno State is rolling again with four straight wins on the way to likely taking the Mountain West’s West title – it needs to win two of its last three games.

The passing game has gone off – even if it needed the final few seconds to work against San Diego State – and the defense has been solid enough against the run to overcome a shaky secondary.

The offense is good on third downs and has a way of bombing its way out of trouble. On the flip side, UNLV has one of the worst offenses in the nation on third downs and is on a four-game losing streak with the passing game sputtering.

However …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why UNLV Will Win

The Rebels are back home.

They’ve dealt with road games in three of their last four games, are 1-4 away from Allegiant, and 3-1 at home. The competition has a whole lot to do with it, but the Rebel passing game is far, far sharper in its own house.

Fresno State might be playing well, but it’s giving up 200 yards or more passing yards on a regular basis, the offense is good for around two turnovers a game, and now it has to face an ultra-motivated team that needs this win to stay in the bowl hunt.

UNLV is creative enough to pull out all the stops and keep things moving, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Rebel secondary will struggle late.

Fresno State will have a hard time pulling away – the first half will be entertaining – but Haener and the passing game will come through when absolutely needed in the last ten minutes.

UNLV will have its chances and will keep coming up just short.
