Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s Mitchell Evans’ direct-snap touchdown

Remember this kid?

With all the hoopla surrounding [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] this season, it can be easy for Notre Dame fans to forget about [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag]. You might have forgotten about him anyway because he only made his season debut against Stanford. Finally, he had a chance to show his value late in the second quarter against UNLV. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] set him up with a 21-yard run to the Rebels’ 1-yard line, and then, with Pyne having gone to the sidelines with a potential injury, Evans took a direct snap and found the end zone with ease:

Maybe Evans hasn’t been able to do anything as far as what’s expected of a tight end these days, but you never know when your number is going to get called in any given situation. Evans took this particular situation and shined in the best way possible. It gave the Irish a 30-7 lead, and fans were grateful for it. Here are some of the things Irish fans said on Twitter after the touchdown:

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s Isaiah Foskey blocking two punts

How did he do this?!

[autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] entered Notre Dame’s game against UNLV as his team’s leader in sacks and co-leader in tackles for loss. Everyone already knew how important he was to the defense. Now, you can start talking about him as equally menacing on special teams. The Rebels were forced to punt on back-to-back first-quarter possessions, and Foskey gave punter Marshall Nichols a couple of images he undoubtedly will be thinking about for weeks.

First, this:

And then, this:

Both possessions set the Irish’s offense up nicely, and the Irish were able to double their scoring output for the game. First, [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] hit [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] for a 20-yard touchdown. Mayer appeared to catch another touchdown pass after the next blocked punt, but replay review ruled that he didn’t hold on. [autotag]Blake Grupe[/autotag] salvaged the drive with a 27-yard field goal.

Irish fans took to Twitter to talk about Foskey’s role in the team blowing the game open:

Surprised?

We can’t blame you if you’ve given up all hope for Notre Dame’s offense. After all, this unit couldn’t get anything going against Stanford for quite some time. However, the offense decided not to wait against UNLV and scored on the game’s first possession. After [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] threw a 37-yard completion to [autotag]Jayden Thomas[/autotag], [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] ran for a 12-yard touchdown, giving the Irish their first opening-drive touchdown this season:

We’ll give you a moment to get over the shock of the end result for this six-play, 75-yard drive.

OK, now that you’ve collected yourself, how are you feeling about this? Pretty darn good, we hope. Fortunately, if you still can’t find the proper words to express how you’re feeling right now, we found Irish fans on Twitter who were able to show everyone how they feel quickly. Here is only a small sample of Irish fans reacting to what has become seemingly an impossible task becoming a reality:

Notre Dame-UNLV: Injury update ahead of kickoff

This should bode well for the Notre Dame defense overall.

The final injury reports are in for Notre Dame and UNLV’s tilt this afternoon as we approach kickoff in South Bend.

An absolute chamber of commerce day in Michiana will serve as the backdrop as Notre Dame tries to get back in the win column after a disastrous showing against Stanford a week ago.

A few injury updates to be aware of on both sides ahead of kick-off:

For Notre Dame, freshman cornerback Jaden Mickey has officially been ruled out for the contest.

For UNLV, two of their best offensive weapons won’t play as quarterback Doug Brumfield and running back Aidan Robbins have both been ruled out.

Brumfield was knocked out of UNLV’s loss against San Jose State early and didn’t play their last time out against Air Force.  In that time the Runnin’ Rebels have scored just 14 points to the 82 they’ve given up.

Robbins leads UNLV with 591 rushing yards and eight rushing scores on the year.

Kickoff is set for 1:40 p.m. ET at Notre Dame Stadium.

Notre Dame vs UNLV Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

The Notre Dame offense is sputtering.

The passing game that was so sharp at times once Drew Pyne took over died against Stanford and the running game didn’t pick up the slack. UNLV doesn’t have the defense to hold up and keep the Irish to under 400 yards, so it has to do whatever it takes to come up with turnovers.

Notre Dame lost to Marshall after turning it over three times and dropped the date to Stanford after giving it away twice.

UNLV has yet to beat an FBS team without forcing multiple takeaways, but it came up with six against Utah State, two against North Texas and Utah State, and kept it close against Cal with a pick.

Win the turnover margin, crank up the good pass rush, and keep the score low by continuing to be strong on third downs. Do that, and this could be interesting. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish can keep this relatively conservative and be okay. Just DON’T TURN THE BALL OVER.

There’s talent in place, the offensive line is good, and everyone is avoiding big mistakes. For all the knocks against Marcus Freeman and the start of his era so far, it’s a sign of potential that his Irish aren’t getting hit with a slew of penalties.

The running game that took control against North Carolina and BYU has to get going early. Air Force is Air Force – that’s an outlier running team, but it blew out the Rebels after running for 406 yards. San Jose State dominated in a 40-7 win by tearing off over 200 yards.

Notre Dame can do that.

What’s Going To Happen

There will be moments when Irish fans freak out over the lack of consistent production, but the defense will take care of the UNLV offense by not allowing a thing on the ground.

The Notre Dame offense will take over in the second quarter with two good scoring drives to set the bar too high at halftime.

It won’t be perfect, but Freeman will take it.

Let’s get wild week 8, statistical projects for Notre Dame vs UNLV

Who has a big game?

This game should see the Irish pad their stats and get an easy win. It might not work out that way, but I think it should. There are plenty of aspects of this game that are going into Notre Dame’s favor. Here are five statical guesses for what the Irish do against UNLV.

Five keys for Notre Dame to defeat UNLV

What are your keys against UNLV?

We have come to a point in the season where the Irish need to play their A-game to win. They can no longer sleep-walk through a game and defeat a lesser opponent. It’s been a stark contrast from the Brian Kelly era but there is no doubt in my mind that Marcus Freeman won’t figure it out eventually. With that in mind, here are five keys the Irish get back into the win column on Saturday.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. UNLV

The Irish better rely on their strengths to beat the Rebels.

Having sunk to an unexpected 3-3, Notre Dame is left to look at its strongest areas that could lead it to victory over UNLV. The Irish don’t take a lot of penalties, are able to hold onto the ball for long period and can keep points off the scoreboard. However, a lot of that is canceled out by an offense that is barely scoring more on average than the defense is allowing points. The Irish are playing a dangerous game here, which has resulted in the season on the cusp of slipping away.

The Rebels don’t rank highly in a lot of areas. Their defense is pretty good at holding on third down, and they’re capable of winning the turnover battle. At the same time, there really isn’t an area in which they’re incredibly bad. While the offense gain a lot of yardage or extra chances and the defense gives up a lot of first downs, the team overall could be a lot worse.

Notre Dame-UNLV: Should Irish be on upset alert again?

What happens Saturday afternoon on Peacock?

Notre Dame will attempt to get back on the horse Saturday afternoon as the 3-3 Irish welcome 4-2 UNLV to South Bend.

We won’t sugarcoat things here at Fighting Irish Wire:  outside of those that might be making their first trip to Notre Dame Stadium either ever or in a very long time, this is among the least anticipated games in recent Fighting Irish memory.

Games against New Mexico and Bowling Green come to mind but at least those took place in years Notre Dame was in College Football Playoff contention into late October. This year the Irish are just trying to stay afloat and get invited to a bowl game sponsored by either Duke’s Mayo or Tony the Tiger.

Oh, and for good measure, you’ll need to subscribe to Peacock in order to watch this one.

With all of those pleasantries in mind here is how the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees Saturday afternoon’s tilt against UNLV going.
