Andrew Thomas becomes UGA football’s highest picked OL ever

Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Andrew Thomas was selected fourth overall by the New York Giants.

Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Andrew Thomas was selected fourth overall by the New York Giants. Thomas declared for the NFL Draft as a junior and is now the highest picked offensive lineman in Georgia history.

Andrew Thomas passes Royce Smith (sixth overall pick) as the earliest selected UGA offensive lineman ever:

Thomas is an extremely talented prospect. He joins Isaiah Wynn as the second Georgia offensive lineman to be drafted in the first round in the past three seasons. Both Thomas and Wynn played on the same offensive line that helped Georgia make the 2018 College Football Playoff.

The New York Giants get their left tackle in Andrew Thomas. Thomas will be GM Dave Gettleman’s latest hog molly.

In college, Thomas went up against elite competition in the SEC. Thomas has blocked numerous players who will or are in the NFL including Alabama’s Quinnen Williams, Kentucky’s Josh Allen, LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson, and many more.

Thomas has NFL size and durability. He started three seasons at UGA and will look to bring that consistency to the Giants. He only missed one game due to injury. Thomas excels in both the pass and run game.

The New York Giants select Georgia Bulldogs OT Andrew Thomas

The New York Giants selected Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Andrew Thomas, one of the top prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants have selected Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Andrew Thomas with the fourth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. Thomas is a veteran left tackle, who started all three seasons in Athens.

Thomas was named first team All-SEC by the coaches in both 2018 and 2019. He was a first team Walter Camp All-American last season as a junior and a semi-finalist for the 2019 Outland Trophy.

Andrew Thomas started 13 games at left tackle in both 2018 and 2019, only missing one game due to injury (Middle Tennessee State). His efforts as a freshman helped Georgia make the 2018 National Championship. He started all fifteen games at right tackle in UGA’s 13-2 season.

At 6-5, 315 pounds, Thomas has the size that NFL teams covet in an offensive lineman. Perhaps even more impressive is his college production. Thomas won three straight SEC East divisions and made three consecutive New Year’s Six Bowl games. Although Thomas elected not to play in the 2020 Sugar Bowl against Baylor.

Entering into the 2020 NFL Draft, Thomas was unanimously considered one of the top four offensive linemen, but where he stands in the top four has been up for debate.. Giants fans can expect an NFL-ready tackle in Andrew Thomas, who is ready to play from day one.

UGA football NFL player comparisons ahead of 2020 Draft

We examine UGA NFL comparisons for D’Andre Swift, JR Reed, Jake Fromm, Isaiah Wilson, Andrew Thomas, Solomon Kindley, and Lawrence Cager.

The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to have anywhere from six to ten players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. But what NFL players are elite UGA prospects being compared to?

Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is anticipated to be one of the top quarterbacks selected. Where he falls among the best prospects is up for debate.

Jake Fromm’s player comparison is current Washington Redskin’s quarterback Colt McCoy. McCoy doesn’t have elite physical talent, but is a solid player who has been in the NFL for ten seasons. PFF compares Fromm to another similar NFL player.

McCoy has been a back-up for much of his career, which is an indication of what NFL.com thinks of Jake Fromm. Fromm, like McCoy, had a distinguished career at a major college.

McCoy, who was a star for the Texas Longhorns, has thrown for 29 touchdowns and 27 interceptions across 28 career NFL starts. He has over 6,000 career passing yards. McCoy was a third round pick in 2010.

Two Bulldogs go in first round of NFL mock draft

Two Georgia Bulldogs are drafted in the first round of a 2020 NFL Mock Draft. Andrew Thomas ends up in Tampa. Isaiah Wilson is a 49er.

Two Georgia Bulldogs went in Bleacher Report’s first round NFL mock draft. The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft starts Thursday, April 23rd at 8:00 PM. The NFL Draft is anticipated to last until around midnight.

B/R has Georgia’s Andrew Thomas and Isaiah Wilson as first round picks.

Andrew Thomas lands with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he’s projected to block for former New England Patriots QB Tom Brady. Thomas is the fourth offensive tackle drafted in this mock. The 14th overall pick is too high for Thomas to still be on the board. He should be gone before then based on his on-field production, his consistency, and his well-defined technique.

Isaiah Wilson ends up as the sixth tackle drafted. He lands with the San Francisco 49ers at the 31st pick of the first round. Wilson has received recent buzz as a first round pick. The 49ers have a lot of talent and would be an excellent fit for Wilson. Their effective rushing attack helped them coast through the NFC to the Super Bowl last season.

Surprisingly, D’Andre Swift doesn’t go in the first round of this mock draft. LSU’s Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the only running back selected in the first round, but he barely sneaks into the first as 32nd pick (Kansas City Chiefs).

Where Georgia Bulldogs rank on NFL Draft big board

A 2020 NFL Draft big board features eight Georgia Bulldogs including D’Andre Swift, Jake Fromm, Andrew Thomas, Solomon Kindley, and more.

With the NFL Draft ahead, let’s take a look at the 2020 NFL Draft big board. Several Georgia Bulldogs are projected to be selected including potential first round picks in Andrew Thomas and D’Andre Swift.

NFL Mock Drafts differ from big boards because they take into account team needs and potential trades. Big boards focus on the best players in the draft.

UGA’s Jake Fromm standing out in NFL interviews

Former Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is standing out in NFL Draft interviews.

Former Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is standing out in NFL Draft interviews according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Due to COVID-19, Fromm and 2020 NFL Draft prospects are having to conduct the vast majority of their interviews virtually.

Fromm has especially impressed NFL quarterback coaches in the pre-draft process. Fromm had control of Georgia’s offense throughout his career and is as seasoned of a veteran as any quarterback in the NFL Draft.

Despite a down junior season, it was inevitable that Fromm would rise during the interview process. Fromm never threw more than seven interceptions in his three seasons as a starter and his decision making and knowledge of the game are two strengths that general managers love.

Fromm helped UGA to three straight SEC Championship Games, winning his first. His steadying presence in the Georgia offense kept the Dawgs consistent and helped talented teams meet or exceed expectations year after year.

Additionally, Fromm learned to adapt to new receivers throughout the entire 2019 season. And given the adjustment from college to the pros, Fromm may be ahead of the pack in terms of the transition.

Fromm still likely won’t be a first round selection. That being said, his ability to operate an offensive system effectively won’t be overlooked.

Georgia fans should expect Fromm’s name to be called in either the second or third round.

Several Georgia Bulldogs go in seven round NFL Mock Draft

University of Georgia football standouts Jake Fromm, D’Andre Swift, Andrew Thomas, and more find new homes in this CBS NFL mock draft.

The Georgia Bulldogs sent ten players to the 2020 NFL Combine. Will all of them get drafted? Probably not. Regardless, each former University of Georgia standout will get a shot to make an NFL roster.

According to CBS’s seven round NFL mock draft, seven Georgia Bulldogs will be selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. Looking at UGA’s recent draft history under head coach Kirby Smart, seven selections in right in line with what Georgia did in 2019’s seven draft picks and 2018’s six picks.

Georgia’s recent NFL Draft success is an uptick from the 2017 NFL Draft, where Isaiah McKenzie was the only Bulldog selected. So where are Georgia’s players projected to go in 2020?

First Round

11th Overall Selection: New York Jets

Offensive Tackle Andrew Thomas– Thomas is rated as the 15th overall player in the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s ranked behind three other tackles.

Second Round

61st Overall Selection: Tennessee Titans

Offensive Tackle Isaiah Wilson– Wilson has the size to compete with the best in the NFL. He’d be joining one of the elite NFL offensive fronts in Nashville. Georgia great Ben Jones leads the Tennessee line from the center position.

63rd Overall Selection: Kansas City Chiefs

Running Back D’Andre Swift– The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs reunite Swift with his former UGA teammate Mecole Hardman. This would be an ideal situation for Swift.

Comparing Georgia’s 2019 roster to NFL Combine measurements

Does the official Georgia Bulldog roster fib about the size of players?

Several Georgia Bulldogs received their NFL Combine measurements a few weeks ago, but how do those compare to how they’re listed on the 2019 University of Georgia roster? There’s always been the theory that college football teams exaggerate the size of certain players.

It certainly holds true in some cases. For example, the NBA recently cracked down on teams who were listing their players at taller heights.

It must be noted that these players could have gained or lost weight ahead of the 2020 NFL Combine, but for the most part it will tell fan show big and tall UGA players are and if the roster is fibbing.

Quarterback Jake Fromm:

UGA roster: 6’2″, 220 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1 7/8″, 219 LBS

Running Back D’Andre Swift:

UGA Roster: 5’9″, 215 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’8 1/4″, 212 LBS

Running Back Brian Herrien:

UGA Roster: 6’0″, 210 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’11 1/8″, 209 LBS

Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship:

UGA Roster: 6’1″, 191 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1″, 190 LBS

Left Tackle Andrew Thomas:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 320 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’5 1/8″, 315 LBS

Guard Solomon Kindley:

UGA Roster: 6’4″, 335 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’3 1/4″, 337 LBS

Right Tackle Isaiah Wilson:

UGA Roster: 6’7″, 340 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’6 1/2, 350 LBS

Wide Receiver Lawrence Cager:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 220 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’4 6/8″, 220 LBS

Tight End Charlie Woerner:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 245 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’4 5/8″, 244 LBS

The verdict? Georgia isn’t significantly fibbing about the size of players. UGA is more likely to be adjusting the heights, but not by more than an inch. The NFL Combine uses more precise height measurements than UGA’s roster.

PFF gives UGA’s Jake Fromm an intriguing NFL comparison

Georgia football’s Jake Fromm is a tough prospect to evaluate ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. PFF compares him to a Chicago Bears quarterback.

Georgia football’s Jake Fromm is a tough prospect to evaluate ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. Fromm struggled with consistency in 2019, but he had an entirely new group of wide receivers. Notably, Fromm couldn’t cash in on as many deep passes as he needed.

Pro Football Focus is comparing Jake Fromm to Chicago Bears quarterback Chase Daniel. Daniel threw three touchdowns and two interceptions this season behind lackluster Chicago starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

So what does PFF’s pro comparison for Jake Fromm have in common with NFL.com’s? Both Chase Daniel and Colt McCoy are long-time NFL back-ups. Each player is ready to fill in if called upon, but hasn’t been effective as starter for longer stretches.

In fact, Daniel has started only five games in his ten year NFL career. Daniel has a career 87.5 passer rating. Will Fromm be able to make it as a starter in the NFL? If he can’t, then NFL Draft analysts seem to believe he can hang around as a back-up. Fromm’s football knowledge would help him stick on rosters as a mentor in the later years of his career.
