Projecting Georgia’s depth chart at quarterback

JT Daniels is projected to return as Georgia’s starter at quarterback, but what happens if he gets hurt?

The Georgia Bulldogs have a lot of talent in their quarterback room ahead of the upcoming college football season. J.T. Daniels is projected to return as Georgia’s starter, but what happens if he gets hurt?

Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have several qualified backups. Georgia has experience in Stetson Bennett, talent in former five-star recruit Brock Vandagriff and combination of the two in Carson Beck, who arrived in Athens as a four-star prospect in the class of 2020.

Georgia’s projected quarterback depth chart:

College GameDay announces Oct. 17 location

College GameDay has announced its location for the Oct. 17 weekend. It will be hosted in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for Georgia at Alabama.

College GameDay has announced its location for the Oct. 17 weekend. ESPN’s flagship college football preview show will be held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday morning. They will be previewing the top five battle between the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide.

GameDay is hosted by Kirk Herbstreit, David Pollack, a special guest, and more in a socially distanced outdoor studio. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, no fans can attend the event.

This past week the GameDay crew visited the Miami Hurricanes at Clemson Tigers game. Clemson dominated Miami in a 42-17 victory.

Despite the circumstances, there’s virtual guests, fans, and more for GameDay. The experience on TV is almost the same. Virtual fans can still bring signs as well.

GameDay will cover the Georgia Bulldogs for the second time this season. The crew also covered the Georgia win over Auburn earlier in the season.

This past week, Alabama beat Ole Miss in a shootout and Georgia dominated Tennessee with an impressive second half performance. Will we get another classic Georgia versus Alabama game?

Where Georgia football ranks in terms of returning production in 2020

Here’s where Georgia football ranks in terms of returning production in all of CFB.

Georgia football returns 10 starters from a team that came oh so close from making a trip to the College Football Playoff last year.

Unfortunately, the Dawgs ran into eventual national champ LSU in the SEC Championship and there was never really a question as to how that game was going to go.

But with 10 returning starters, the Dawgs are primed to make another run at the SEC Championship and hopefully the CFP.

With the returning talent that Georgia has, it puts the Bulldogs at 59th in the country according to Bill Connely of ESPN, who ranked the college football teams with the most returning production in 2020.

The offense returns 50% of its production (different than starters), which is 98th overall. The defense returns 80% production, good for 21st in America.

Connely explained how he differentiates returning production from returning starters.

I have for a few years been deriving what I call a team’s returning production percentage as an alternative to returning starters. It looks at the most predictive key personnel stats — percentage of your QB’s passing yards returning, percentage of your secondary’s passes defensed returning, and everything in between — and is weighted based on what correlates most strongly with year-to-year improvement and regression. It is a major factor in my annual SP+ projections, which will be released next week. (The other primary factors: recent recruiting and weighted five-year history.)

With 80% of production returning to a defense that ranked No. 1 in America last year, the Dawgs will be making life difficult for opposing offense next season. The losses of safety J.R. Reed, defensive tackle Michael Barnett, defensive linemen David Marshall and Tyler Clark and linebacker Tae Crowder hurt, but with the way Kirby Smart has been recruiting for the past three years, the defense will be just fine, likely even better, next season.

In terms of returning starters, Dawgs247 searched through players who started seven or more games in 2019 and came up with this list of returning defensive starters:

NG Jordan Davis

DE Malik Herring

OLB Azeez Ojulari

ILB Monty Rice

CB Eric Stokes

DB Mark Webb

DB DJ Daniel

S Richard LeCounte

The offensive guys include center Trey Hill and versatile offensive lineman Ben Cleveland.

There’s also George Pickens coming back, who was not on 247’s list as a result of their criteria, but he may make a bigger impact on offense than any returning player next season.

Back to ESPN’s list of returning production — regarding total production returning to the program, here are some notable rankings throughout college football:

(Out of 130 teams)

2. Georgia Tech

32. South Carolina

50. Tennessee

59. Georgia

61. Florida

78. Auburn

126. LSU

127. Alabama

Georgia football loses commitment from class of 2021

Georgia football lost a commitment from the 2021 class today.

Just one day ago Georgia tied the knot on college football’s top ranked recruiting class for 2020.

On Thursday, though, Kirby Smart shifted his attention to the class of 2021, where Georgia just lost a commitment from West Forsyth (Clemmons, N.C.) offensive lineman Jared Wilson.

Wilson, a three star offensive guard, decommitted from Georgia via a tweet he sent out on Thursday morning.

Wilson is a high ranking 3-star prospect, checking in as the No. 354 overall player in the country. Additionally, he is the 16th ranked offensive guard and the No. 23 player in the state of North Carolina.

At 6-4 and 325 pounds, Wilson has the ideal size to play in the trenches at an SEC school.

The decommitment of Wilson leaves Georgia with two players in the class of 2021 right now. Thankfully, one of those two is five-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff and the other is top-50 prospect David Daniel.

SEC power rankings before the SEC Championship

ESPN released their SEC power rankings ahead of the Georgia Bulldogs versus LSU Tigers SEC Championship Game

The SEC had one of the most shocking rivalry weeks ever. Now, the SEC Championship is just days away: the LSU Tigers face the Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday at 4:00 eastern time in Atlanta.

ESPN released their week 15 SEC Power Rankings after last week’s action. Do you think these power rankings are based on the best body of work or who would win a head to head match-up?

If it is based on the best body of work, then Florida should be over Alabama. The Crimson Tide have two loses as do the Gators, but Florida beat Auburn. Alabama’s best win on the season is their victory over Texas A&M that doesn’t look as impressive anymore. Even without Tua, Alabama would be favored to beat Florida on a neutral field. Both schools are playing excellent football with their back-up quarterbacks, but haven’t done enough to make the SEC Championship.

The only way the SEC will get two teams in the College Football Playoff is if Georgia upsets a favored LSU team in the SEC Championship. To start the season nobody saw LSU dominating their way to the SEC Championship. Joe Burrow and the Tigers will face their biggest test yet against Georgia’s elite defense.

The SEC played numerous cupcakes this past week. Now, the SEC Championship is officially set: the LSU Tigers will face the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta.

SEC Mike released his week 14 SEC Power Rankings after last week’s action. Is the criteria of these rankings the best team now? Or the best bodies of work?

Florida over Alabama is an interesting choice, especially since the Crimson Tide only have one loss. Even without Tua, Alabama would beat Florida on a neutral field. Both schools are playing excellent football with their back-up quarterbacks, but haven’t done enough to make the SEC Championship.

If Georgia loses to LSU, then the Crimson Tide may make the playoff despite SEC Mike’s low power ranking. Alabama will need to defeat Auburn and look impressive to make the playoff. It’d be the Crimson Tide’s only ranked win of the season. If the favored teams win out, then Alabama’s resume would be compared with the Utah Utes and the Oklahoma Sooners, who would boast conference championships.
