UConn vs FIU Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

UConn won a real live game against a real live team?

Fresno State might not be the team everyone thought it would be, and it was missing QB Jake Haener, but whatever – the Huskies were missing some key parts, too, and still won 19-14.

Under new head coach Jim Mora Jr. the running game has been solid, the defense was brilliant, and overall the program is improving.

FIU doesn’t come up with downfield pass plays, the run defense isn’t anything great, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why FIU Will Win

Look at FIU getting to 2-2?

The Panthers might be having problems defensively overall, but they pitched a gem in the stunning 21-7 win over New Mexico State.

The lines are having problems and there wasn’t any running game until last week, but new head coach Mike MacIntyre is starting to slowly make things happen. As long as there isn’t a turnover problem and if the defense can hold down the UConn ground game, it has a shot.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will run the ball.

FIU got by Bryant and New Mexico State when the run D worked, got obliterated by Texas State and WKU when it didn’t. UConn will come up with 200 yards on the ground on the way to the program’s first two-game winning streak since 2017.

Fresno State vs UConn Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

There’s no reason to get cute here.

The Bulldogs are missing QB Jake Haener after he got hurt in the loss to USC a few weeks ago, and now the running game should be able to take over and roll at will.

The Bulldogs are averaging five yards per carry in the first three games – two of them against Oregon State and USC – and now they’re going against a UConn defensive front that hasn’t been awful, but gets pounded on.

Slow and steady in this is just fine, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why UConn Will Win

Can the Fresno State offense really do what it wants to?

Logan Fife stepped in for Haener and hit 11-of-12 passes against USC, but the game had already been decided.

UConn has a bit of a running game, but it hasn’t been able to do much with it against NC State and Michigan on the slate. Fresno State, though, is struggling a bit against the run, the offensive line is allowing too many sacks, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UConn isn’t USC or Oregon State.

It’s a nice home game for the UConn program, and it’s an interesting trip for the Mountain West team, but the offense should travel.

Fife will be fine, the running game will be great, and it should be a business trip win without anything sensational. UConn won’t be a speed bump, but it won’t be able to keep up.

UConn put on full-court press for fab-5 vibes with these 2023 recruits

That won’t stop the University of Connecticut from trying.

There may never be a more talented starting five in college basketball than the one Michigan put together in the early ’90s, now known as the Fab-5. That won’t stop the University of Connecticut from trying, though.

UConn’s recruiting class of 2023 has five key members, according to CT Insider.

CG Stephon Castle: 6-foot-6, 205 pounds – 5 stars

Castle is ranked No. 5 at his position in the country and No. 20 nationally. He committed to Connecticut back in November, 2021.

SG Solomon Ball: 6-foot-3, 185 pounds – 4 stars

Ball is ranked as the third-best shooting guard in the nation and the second-best player from the state of Maryland. He committed on July 1.

SF Jayden Ross: 6-foot-7, 180 pounds – 4 stars

A prep teammate of Ball’s, Ross is ranked No. 28 among small forward in his class and fourth in Maryland. He committed to the Huskies on June 27.

SF Jaylin Stewart: 6-foot-6, 210 pounds – 4 stars

Coming all the way from Seattle, Stewart was the centerpiece of UConn’s recruiting efforts. Stewart is the top-ranked player from the state of Washington. He committed on September 16.

C Youssouf Singare: 7-foot-0, 225 pounds – 4 stars

Singare is ranked No. 18 among centers and No. 2 in the state of New York. UConn got his commitment on September 21.

Over the course of one weekend (Sept. 9-11), the Huskies were able to gather all five of them together and went out of their way to foster some fab-five vibes. The team had them take photos together, imitating one famous picture of the original group at Michigan.

A few days later, Stewart and Singare both committed, completing the picture.

UConn’s 2023 recruiting class is now ranked No. 3 in the nation.

They begin their ’22 season at home on Nov. 7 against Stonehill College.

NC State vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies might be coming off of two blowout loses to Syracuse and Michigan, but this is going to be a process.

The running game isn’t awful. It was good over the first two weeks, and then it ran into those to Power Five teams and sputtered – it had a little success against the Orange.

The aren’t a slew of penalties to make life harder, the run defense is holding teams to four yards per carry, and the O line overall hasn’t been too bad – it’s been good in pass protection.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why NC State Will Win

This is the game to try getting the offense to be more consistent. The D will take care of the rest.

Syracuse and Michigan fired at will with the passing game. Neither one took any big chances, both connected on 81% of their throws, and while Michigan didn’t go off with the ground attack, it ran for six touchdowns.

NC State’s defense hasn’t allowed anything on the ground so far, especially over the last two games, and it’s forcing a ton of mistakes with nine takeaways.

UConn doesn’t have a dangerous enough of a passing game to worry about, expect at least two takeaways, and the offense should capitalize on every opportunity.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State somehow go on after the brutal jab by North Carolina QB Drake Maye?

It was suggested that people who go to NC State couldn’t get into UNC, but the team will overcome the adversity with one of an easy game with both sides still trying to work out all the kinks.

The defense will dominate from the start, the offense will be balanced, and even though it hasn’t been perfect so far, NC State will be 4-0.

Michigan vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies have a few decent positives to build on in the long, hard journey to being at least competitive under new head coach Jim Mora Jr.

The running game worked fine in the first two games – a loss to Utah State and a win over Central Connecticut State – and the team might have something in freshman QB Zion Turner, who hit 14-of-17 passes for 92 yards and a score in the loss to Syracuse.

The defensive front hasn’t been totally gouged so far against the run, third down conversions haven’t been a problem, Michigan is only clicking on 31% of its third down tries, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Michigan Will Win

Turnovers. It’s not like Michigan needs a ton of help in this, but UConn will be happy to provide it with at least two giveaways – probably three or more – and Michigan has given up just one turnover so far.

The running game is crushing.

The Wolverines are averaging close to seven yards per carry, there’s been no issue getting the offense moving, and the defense isn’t allowing anything happening down the field.

The lines have been fantastic. UConn won’t generate anything in the backfield, it won’t come up with enough of a push for the ground attack, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be another easy scrimmage for Michigan.

With the Big Ten season starting next week against Maryland, the team gets another preseason game to tune things up, get the timing of the passing game down, work with the quarterback situation, and get to work on what’s coming.

UConn won’t have enough scoring pop to have any prayer of keeping up in the second half. It’ll come up with a few points, but this will get out of hand fast.

Michigan vs. UConn: Three keys to a Michigan football victory

Should be another fun week for Michigan!

The No. 4 Wolverines will be hosting Connecticut on Saturday for their third-straight home game to start the season.

UConn is out to 1-2 start to the season after finishing 1-11 the previous year. The Huskies lost to both Utah State and Syracuse while defeating Central Connecticut in Week 1.

Both teams are using their backup quarterbacks from the first game of the season – for two entirely different reasons. As we all know, Michigan entered the season with a quarterback battle and sophomore J.J. McCarthy won the job after last week against Hawaii. The Huskies, on the other hand, lost starter  Ta’Quan Roberson in Week 0, so UConn will trot out freshman Zion Turner against the maize and blue.

Not only is Michigan at home for three-straight weeks, but the Wolverines are huge favorites against the Huskies. Something catastrophic would need to happen for the maize and blue to lose this game, but that’s why the games are played.

Here are our three keys to a Michigan victory.

Syracuse vs UConn Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Well that worked.

Syracuse changed up the offense a bit, went to more of a balanced attack, and the defense came up with a terrific performance in the somewhat stunning 31-7 win over Louisville.

RB Sean Tucker is a given – he ran 21 times for 100 yards and a score – but it was QB Garrett Shader who took his game up a few notches with a brilliant 18-of-25 passing day for 236 yards and two scores, and with 94 rushing yards and a touchdown.

And UConn won’t be able to stop any of it.

The Huskies came up with a nice win over Central Connecticut last week, and it wasn’t awful in the loss to Utah State. But the defensive front is going to have a tough time, and the offense can’t turn the ball over three times like it did against the Blue Devils. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why UConn Will Win

Syracuse wasn’t perfect in the opener.

It didn’t turn the ball over, but the 18 penalties kept the game from being easier than it turned out to be.

And yes, UConn is playing better. There’s a stronger ground game with Nathan Carter running well over the first two games. The team overall has been sharper under new head coach Jim Mora Jr., and the defense really is playing well enough to not get steamrolled.

Syracuse was able to pull away from Louisville partly because it was +3 in turnover margin – UConn can make this interesting if it’s perfect.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse is going to air out the passing attack a little bit this week, too.

The less running Tucker and Shrader do, the better – Purdue is up next before the ACC season start.

UConn will play well in the first quarter and hang around early into the second half, but the Syracuse offense will own the clock and the game from then on.

UConn vs Central Connecticut Game Preview

Why Central Connecticut Will Win

The Blue Devils can get into the backfield.

They’re missing last year’s top pass rusher Kelvin Apari, but they can generate pressure from several spots – they led the FCS in tackles for loss.

The UConn offensive line did a decent job of keeping the defense out of the backfield in the 31-20 loss to Utah State to start the season, but this is going to be a work in progress.

Central Connecticut should be able to throw a bit – it has the experience and veterans in place to start doing more down the field – but as long as it can hang around in the turnover battle and come up with third down stops, it can pull this off.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

The offense might have found something against Utah State.

Everything stalled over the last three quarters, but Nathan Carter and the running game worked. He took off for 190 yards on 20 carries, the team ran for 245 yards averaging over six yards per carry, and now the team is going to bash and bash some more.

The three turnovers did in the Huskies. Keep the mistakes to a minimum, and the offensive line should be able to take over.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Nothing is a given when it comes to UConn football.

It lost to Holy Cross by ten last year, needed a late score to get by Yale, struggled against Wagner to open up 2019, and craziest of all, it hasn’t beaten an FCS team by more than a touchdown since a 35-3 win over Fordham in 2011.

Things are different now with Jim Mora Jr. taking over the coaching reins, but it’s still not going to be easy.

UConn Huskies Preview 2022

UConn wasn’t always totally miserable at college football.

Yes, kids, there really was a time when the Huskies were good enough to get into the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma and bowl games were a regular thing. The program is coming off of ten straight losing seasons as things have gotten worse and worse.

There’s been a little bit of talent here and there – there were more than enough vulture schools out there happy to go pick away at UConn players over the last year – but nothing has worked.

It took a huge effort to get by Yale for the only victory of last year, and a 2020 win over an equally hapless UMass was the lone win over an FBS program since taking down Tulsa in the middle of the 2017 season.

But that’s in the past.

New head coach Jim Mora Jr. is a good head coach who knows what he’s going, but it’s going to take an all-timer of an effort just to get this season off the ground much less be competitive in most of the games.

This is more than just a rebuild, teardown, reboot, or any other way you want to describe what Mora and his staff have to do.

This is starting from scratch, and only positive things can come from it.

UConn Huskies Preview 2022: Offense

UConn had the least efficient passing game in college football, it was the second-worst offense in the nation in total yards, and it was the second-worst scoring attack.

It keeps going.

It came up with the second-least amount of first downs, it was the worst team in America on third downs, it was the second-worst O in yards per pass, and …

Again, the program is starting over. It’s going to get better because 1), it can’t get any worse, 2) the former coaching staff went WAY young and threw a slew of freshmen into the mix, and 3) …

The quarterback play should be okay. Penn State transfer Ta’Quan Roberson struggled when he had his chances, but he’s got the tools, he was a good recruit, and he’ll make the job his from the start with former starter Steven Krajewski off to Georgia State and the other options transferring, too.

Leading receiver Keelan Marion is back – he only caught 28 passes but he got five of the team’s 11 touchdown grabs – and Kevens Clercius and Aaron Turner help round out what might be the team’s biggest early strength. And then there’s Cameron Ross – the 60-catch leading target from 2019 who played just two games in the last two years.

The offensive line is going to be the biggest work in progress. The transfer portal is bringing in the options around veteran guard Noel Ofori-Nyadu and the versatile Christopher Fortin who’ll work somewhere around the inside.

RB Kevin Mensah was a good back who wasn’t used enough. he’s gone, but leading rusher Nate Carter is back after running for 578 yards and two scores.

UConn Huskies Preview 2022: Defense

The offenses was worse, but the defense was plenty bad on its own. The run D has been a problem for years, the secondary got ripped up late last season, and now the team has to go on without star DT Travis Jones – he’s now a Baltimore Raven – and with Lawl Uguak off to TCU.

However, like the offensive side, last year’s coaching staff went young, and how there’s enough experience back across the board to not be starting from scratch. It begins with …

The linebacking corps might not be all that bad. At the very least, there’s experience and quickness starting with leading returning tackler Jackson Mitchell – he made 120 stops last season – helped by the return of second-leading tackler Ian Swenson as a hybrid type of defender, and with Kentucky transfer Marquez Bembry adding some size and thump on the inside.

However …

The defensive front might take a while. There’s no replacing Jones and Uguwak was going to be a bigger factor, and now it’s a smallish, thin line that has to find more options and pass rushers.

The secondary gets all four starters back. Like other areas, this was a young group that took its lumps. Sophomore safety Durante Jones will once again be one of the team’s better tacklers, but overall this group has to come up with more big stops.

UConn vs Utah State Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

New head coach Jim Mora Jr. hit the transfer portal hard to give the Huskies some actual options at various positions and enough depth to hold up better.

Getting QB Ta’Quan Roberson from Penn State is a plus, there’s experience all across the offense, and on the other side the linebacking corps should be strong enough to hold up against a Utah State offense whose running game might be held in check.

The first step to making UConn football okay is finding one thing that works. Third down conversion were an issue last year, but any control of the clock will be a big deal.

Most importantly, the Huskies have to come up with takeaways to stay alive in this – last year’s Utah State offense turned it over a bit too much.

For all of its problems, the UConn secondary might take a big step forward with all the experience returning.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Utah State Will Win

Welcome to the Utah State passing game.

The Aggies are going to be more explosive and more consistent. There will be a few good UConn defensive stops just because it’s Week 0 – Utah State won’t be razor-sharp quite yet – but QB Logan Bonner should get more time to work.

The Aggie O line struggled in pass protection, but it’s a veteran group that should be more cohesive. It’ll look great against a revamped UConn defensive front that might need a little while to get going.
