No. 9 Sooners fall on the road to TCU Horned Frogs 80-71

Recap of No. 9 Oklahoma’s loss in their second Big 12 conference game. The Sooners lost 80-71 to TCU.

Wednesday night was a pivotal moment in Oklahoma’s season. While it didn’t go Oklahoma’s way, the Sooners got that first road game experience. Wednesday became the second time Oklahoma has tasted defeat all year as the TCU Horned Frogs upset the Sooners 80-71.

Oklahoma entered the game off their first win in Big 12 play after beating a tough Iowa State team at home on Saturday. That same Iowa State team turned right around and beat previously unbeaten Houston on Tuesday evening.

Oklahoma has played many games on neutral courts, but the Sooners’ trip to Fort Worth was anything but inviting.

Porter Moser’s team opened the game trading baskets with TCU before the Frogs pushed out to a 27-22 lead midway through the first half. The Sooners were paced early by [autotag]Milos Uzan[/autotag] and [autotag]Sam Godwin[/autotag]. Godwin had seven first-half points. Uzan filled the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, and six assists in the first 20 minutes.

Foul trouble and missed shots disrupted Oklahoma’s offensive rhythm in the first half, but the Sooners hung around enough to get into the locker room down 40-34.

Jameer Nelson Jr. and Emmanuel Miller paced the Horned Frogs’ scoring efforts in the first half. Nelson had nine of his 13 in the first half, while Emmanuel Miller poured in 10 of his 27 during the first 20 minutes.

Oklahoma’s 11 fouls and 12 turnovers were the story before the break.

[autotag]Javian McCollum[/autotag] came out fighting as he knocked in back-to-back threes to tie the game at 40 immediately after halftime.

From there, things began to get dicey for Oklahoma. The fouls continued to pile up, and the Frogs never looked back.

The Horned Frogs answered with seven unanswered points and began to run away from the Sooners, pushing the lead to as many as 17 points late in the game. The Sooners fought back to make the score more respectable, but the proof was in the pudding. TCU seized control of the game in the final 20 minutes.

Cold-shooting couldn’t mitigate Oklahoma’s foul trouble. Le’tre Darthard was 0-6 from three, and Rivaldo Soares was 0-3 from behind the arch. The Sooners shot just 28 percent as a team from three, which will never get it done in high-major basketball.

Milkos Uzan flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, ten assists, and seven boards. John Hugley scored 14 off the bench, and Javian McCollum ended with 17 points to lead all Sooners in scoring.

It won’t get any easier for Oklahoma. They won’t be shell-shocked by a road atmosphere come Saturday as they make a trip to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas lost to Big 12 newcomer UCF just before the Oklahoma and TCU game tipped off. Both teams will be desperate to get off the mat and not have to stew for the next week amid a two-game losing streak.

Oklahoma Sooners land commitment from talented 4-star OL Eddy Pierre-Louis

Oklahoma has continued to stack up offensive line depth for the future, earning a commitment from four-star guard Eddy Pierre-Louis.

We are now just days away from Oklahoma finalizing their 2024 recruiting class with the early signing period coming on December 20th. Many athletes are having signing day ceremonies early since some schools will be out for winter break during that time.

The recruiting process has ended for many prospects, but for some, it has taken them a lot longer to figure out where they would play college football.

Oklahoma had to play the waiting game for one of their prospects, but with the athleticism and the upside that this one possesses, it could end up being worth the wait. Four-star Tampa Catholic offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis announced his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday.

Pierre-Louis chose the Sooners over offers from Oregon, Alabama, UCF, Auburn, Florida, Michigan, USC and many others. The talented offensive lineman is a composite four-star at 247Sports is Rivals number one guard prospect in the country.

This recruitment has been a roller coaster, with UCF holding a distinct advantage at times. Oregon led for some time, as did Oklahoma. The one constant in this was Oklahoma’s ability to never get too far down the pecking order. When the opportunity came for the Sooners to seize control for good, they did just that.

Eddy Pierre-Louis has game-ready size as he stands 6-foot-4 and weighs over 315 pounds already. He is most definitely a guard in college, but he could end up being an all-conference type of guard if his athleticism translates to the collegiate level.

He runs track and field, and his high school tape showcases a physical player who thrives as a pulling lineman, where he can get out in space and punish defenders. With Oklahoma using many more gap-oriented run schemes, which Seth Littrell has incorporated in his offenses before, he has a clear path to showcasing his best skills.

Bill Bedenbaugh is getting a terrific talent whose athleticism raises his ceiling significantly. With Oklahoma’s lack of depth along the interior, it’s entirely possible that Pierre-Louis needs to be ready to play at some point next season.

With him in the boat, the Oklahoma Sooners have 28 high school commitments and remain one of the ten best recruiting classes in the country.

Oklahoma Sooners drop one spot in the latest AP Poll

Oklahoma dropped one spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25.

The bye week couldn’t have arrived at a better time for the Oklahoma Sooners.

In their last game, we saw them pull off a last-minute win over the Texas Longhorns that put the Sooners in the driver’s seat of the Big 12.

The Sooners avenged last year’s 49-0 embarrassment in the process. They finally showed the rest of the college football world that this year’s team is a stark contrast from what the nation saw last year.

The emotional and mental recovery needed from that game would have been hard to come by in just a week. So, it may end up as a blessing in disguise that Oklahoma had a week off to rest physically and mentally to prepare for the final push to make it back to the Big 12 championship game.

While idle, the rest of the college football world featured multiple top-25 matchups. A number of games moved the needle on a national scale, creating some movement in this week’s iteration of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The top four remain unchanged from last week’s poll: Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State are in the same spots. Oklahoma rose to the fifth spot after beating Texas, but Washington took OU’s spot after the Huskies knocked off the Oregon Ducks, 36-33, Saturday afternoon.

With that Huskies win, Oklahoma is No. 6 in the nation. It is still in prime position to move up as the season wears on. Following the Sooners in the top 10 are Penn State, Texas, Oregon and Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels.

Notre Dame had the most significant rise of any team in the top 25. It moved six spots from No. 21 to No. 15 after they wrapped up a decisive win over Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans on Saturday night. The Trojans plummeted eight spots out of the top 10 to No. 18.

For the third straight week, Oklahoma and Texas remain the lone Big 12 schools ranked. Both Texas and Oklahoma had bye weeks and return to action Saturday against Big 12 newcomers. The Sooners host UCF, while Texas hosts Dana Holgersen and the Houston Cougars on Saturday.

Sooners receive crystal ball projections for pair of targets after win over Texas

Oklahoma received crystal balls for a pair of prospects on Sunday morning following their win over Texas.

The good vibes are still rolling if you’re a fan of the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners beat their rival in an instant classic of a [autotag]Red River Rivalry[/autotag] on Saturday. On Sunday, the Sooners were on the receiving end of not one but two crystal ball projections for a pair of their remaining targets.

Steve Wiltfong, director of football recruiting at 247Sports, issued crystal balls in Oklahoma’s favor for four-star offensive line prospect Eddy Pierre-Louis and four-star linebacker Michael Boganowski on Sunday morning.

Oklahoma’s 2024 recruiting class is ranked seventh in the nation with 24 commits and still has room for a few more.

[autotag]Pierre-Louis[/autotag] hails from Florida and attends [autotag]Tampa Catholic[/autotag], the same high school where freshman linebacker [autotag]Lewis Carter[/autotag] came from. Pierre-Louis is a guard prospect and would be a lovely addition to the Sooners offensive line haul in 2024. Aside from the Sooners, UCF is fighting for his services the most.

Boganowski has a nice athletic frame and plays all over for his high school team. He projects best as a rangy linebacker in college with added weight. His recruitment has looked like a line graph with Kansas State gaining momentum and Oklahoma seizing momentum back. Right now, the Sooners may have regained control in the battle to land his commitment.

If the Sooners were to land commitments from both, the two pledges would be good enough for the Sooners to leap the Florida State Seminoles for sixth in 247Sports’ team recruiting rankings.

Decisions are not scheduled for either prospect, but we should gain more clarity as the days get closer to the early signing period.

Oklahoma to face Providence in 2023 Big East-Big 12 Battle

Oklahoma and Providence are locked in for a December 5th date to play in Norman as part of the fifth Big 12-Big East Battle.

While the Oklahoma Sooners grapple with how they’ll retool and replenish a now-depleted roster, we know one of their non-conference opponents for the 2023 season.

The Sooners are set to take on the Providence Friars on December 5 in the 2023 Big East-Big 12 Battle. This men’s basketball non-conference scheduling alliance is in its fifth year, with the games being played from November 30 to December 5.

Both conferences have grown in members since the conception of the idea, and with the Big 12 adding Houston, BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati, the format has changed this year with an increase from 10 to 11 matchups for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. In this upcoming 2023-2024 season, the Big 12 will host six games, while the Big East will host six the following season.

The two conferences jointly determine the matchups, with the home team choosing the venue of its game. ESPN and FOX Sports will also have a voice in how the broadcast arrangements play out, considering they are the overarching media entities for the Big 12 and Big East.

Providence will be under the guidance of Kim English, previously the head coach of the George Mason Patriots.

English is a former Big 12 basketball player who was a star at Missouri (before they departed for the SEC). He helped lead the Tigers to 107 wins and four NCAA tournament appearances. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selection at Missouri, averaging 11.1 points.

The Friars have made the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last twelve seasons.

Sooners offer 2024 DL Xavier Porter out of Tampa Catholic

Oklahoma heads back to Tampa to offer Lewis Carter’s teammate, 2024 DL Xavier Porter.

Oklahoma’s insistence on being more present as a recruiting force in the southeast is very real. They landed multiple prospects in their 2023 class from the Southeast region as prospects from North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida joined the Sooners. One of their signees, four-star linebacker Lewis Carter hails from Tampa, Florida where he played his high school ball for Tampa Catholic.

The Sooners saw Carter play multiple times and clearly have an idea of the roster itself. So it makes sense that they would revisit Tampa Catholic more specifically and pursue Carter’s teammate Xavier Porter.

Three-star defensive lineman Xavier Porter received an offer from Oklahoma on Tuesday. Porter, a track athlete as well, is starting to see his stock rise as offers from Michigan, Florida State, and Auburn have landed since the turn of the calendar year. Porter plays defensive end and defensive tackle and looks to be a scheme-versatile defensive line piece in college.

Dillon Gabriel No. 7 in CBS Sports’ first QB Rankings of 2022

Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel slots in at No. 7 on CBS Sports QB Power rankings to start the season.

When Dillon Gabriel takes the field on Saturday against UTEP, it will mark his 26th start and 27th game at the collegiate level.

He’s seasoned and has been productive. He’s certainly one of the ten best college quarterbacks right now. Reunited with Jeff Lebby, Gabriel and the Oklahoma offense are ready to roll.

CBS Sports agrees that Gabriel is one of the ten best QB’s in the country. Gabriel comes in at No. 7 in the first edition of their QB Power rankings. According to Tom Fornelli, the rankings are based on “highly-scientific criteria, including how well they’re playing, how well their teams are playing, their statistical profiles, and those aforementioned vibes, baby.”

Notable names ahead of him include the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Bryce Young and former Heisman finalist C.J. Stroud. Devin Leary, Caleb Williams, Hendon Hooker, and Grayson McCall round out the group in front of Gabriel. Fornelli had this to say in his excerpt about Gabriel:

Gabriel missed nearly the entire 2021 season, but his prior performances at UCF and potential in Jeff Lebby’s offense make him deserving of placement. There aren’t many things in life you’ll see that are more beautiful than his deep ball down the left sideline. It’s up there with a sunset over the Pacific Ocean and wherever Instagram models are paid to be this weekend. – Fornelli, CBS Sports

The marriage between Lebby and Gabriel produced 3,653 passing yards (UCF freshman record), 29 touchdowns, and seven interceptions for a 156.9 efficiency rating. With better weapons in Norman and a better understanding of Lebby’s offense, Gabriel should have a monster season. Add that to the knowledge Lebby has gained since leaving UCF, and we could see some insane fireworks this season.  Gabriel should rise quite a few times in these rankings, and it’s possible by year’s end, he’s much higher than 7th.

Oklahoma looks like the trending choice for four-star LB Lewis Carter out of Tampa, Florida

Momentum is starting to pick up significantly in Oklahoma’s favor for four-star linebacker Lewis Carter out of Tampa, Florida.

Oklahoma has become an absolute machine in July and by all accounts, it’s not slowing down this month in the slightest.

After starting the month ranked somewhere in the 40s nationally in team recruiting rankings for the class of 2023, Oklahoma has taken a gigantic Superman-sequel leap into the top 15 of college football recruiting and the best part is: The month of July has more commits to come.

One of the players whom the Sooners are closing in on is four-star athlete Lewis Carter.

Carter, a projected linebacker out of Tampa, Florida, fits the modern off-ball linebacker mold of today. He’s not some hulking 6-foot-3 behemoth but a little undersized with speed to burn and some pop behind his pads. He has the ability to play in space, which is where today’s games are being decided. At six feet tall and playing somewhere around 200 pounds it’s possible the Sooners could move him to safety but it looks like he’ll get a shot as a linebacker out of high school.

The Under Armour All-American boasts over 40 confirmed offers but the Auburn Tigers, North Carolina Tarheels, Clemson Tigers and the Sooners seem to be standing out the most.

Less than 24 hours after Oklahoma landed their 15th commitment of the 2023 class, cryptic “lock” emojis flooded social media from former Sooner great Rufus Alexander and director of recruiting J.R. Sandlin on Friday morning. Those were followed by Carter posting this tweet.

To cap it all off, multiple 247Sports crystal ball and On3 predictions were dropped from Oklahoma and Auburn insiders, raising the idea that Carter’s recruitment could be winding down and Oklahoma looks to be the favorite.

With that said, a Carter commitment would be another major pickup as Brent Venables continues to remake the defensive roster in his image. One that more closely resembles the elite defenses he built while at Clemson.
