Seahawks 2023 NFL mock draft: The maximum value edition

In the end, we still got our guy and came out with 11 total selections in the draft.

The Seahawks would be picking at No. 3 overall if the 2023 NFL draft were held today. That puts them in position to land a blue chip prospect that could fundamentally change their defense. It also puts them in a prime spot to trade down with teams who are looking to draft a quarterback.

In our latest seven-round 2023 mock draft we took advantage of the latter, dealing down three spots with Detroit and adding a pick in the teens. Later, we traded down again from No. 35 overall – doubling up the picks Seattle received in the Russell Wilson trade to maximize the value of the deal.

In the end, we still got our guy and came out with 11 total selections in the draft. Here’s how it went down.

Texans give Bryce Young a weapon and shore up pass rush in Draft Wire mock

The Houston Texans get Bryce Young No. 1 overall and add a pass rusher and another receiving threat in the latest Draft Wire mock.

The silver lining in the Houston Texans finishing as the worst team in the NFL is they will have three shots within the first 32 picks to acquire premium talent to finish off the rebuild.

According to Luke Easterling from the Draft Wire, the Texans use their first pick in his latest mock draft to take Alabama quarterback Bryce Young No. 1 overall.

Davis Mills obviously isn’t the answer, so it’s a safe bet the Texans will be looking for his long-term replacement here. It’s a tight race between Young and Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud for this spot, but despite Young’s lack of ideal size, his arm talent, athleticism, competitiveness and intangibles win out.

In this mock draft, the Cleveland Browns don’t finish low enough to allow Houston a shot at going after Alabama defensive end Will Anderson. Nevertheless they address the need by taking Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson.

After landing their franchise quarterback, the Texans need to address their desperate need for an impact player along the defensive front. Wilson’s massive frame, impressive length, and rare athleticism could easily make him a top-15 pick, and he’d be a great fit in Lovie Smith’s defense off the edge.

Recall the Miami Dolphins forfeited their 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick as part of their violations of the NFL’s tampering policy as they tried to lure Tom Brady. This is why the Texans would be picking No. 32 in Round 2 as opposed to No. 33 overall.

With that selection, the Texans add another receiver with Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba. That would mean Young would have a young trio of Nico Collins, John Metchie, and Smith-Njigba. If all three of them could get on the same page, Houston’s offense should start producing through the air and at least give fans something interesting to watch inside NRG Stadium.

Broncos select EDGE Tyree Wilson in 2023 NFL mock draft

Touchdown Wire’s latest 2023 NFL mock draft has the Broncos selecting Texas Tech EDGE Tyree Wilson in the first round.

In his latest 2023 NFL mock draft for Touchdown Wire, Doug Farrar has the Denver Broncos selecting Texas Tech edge defender Tyree Wilson with the 25th overall pick in the first round.

Denver acquired that first-round pick from the Miami Dolphins as part of the Bradley Chubb trade earlier this season. Miami acquired the pick that was sent to the Broncos from the San Francisco 49ers, which is why the pick is currently on pace to be in the mid-20s next April.

Denver’s original first-round pick was traded to the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year as part of the Russell Wilson trade. It’s currently on pace to be fourth overall. Farrar has Seattle selecting Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. at that spot in his latest mock.

Back to Wilson — he’s a 6-6, 275-pound defensive lineman who would presumably transition to playing outside linebacker if selected by the Broncos. Wilson totaled 99 tackles (including 27.5 tackles for losses) and 14 sacks over the last two years (23 games) with the Red Raiders.

The 2023 NFL draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29.

Packers add top pass rusher in Dane Brugler’s first mock draft of 2023

Check out who Dane Brugler sent to the struggling Packers with the 8th overall pick in his first mock draft of the 2023 draft cycle.

Since the 2009 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers have used 13 first-round selections on defensive players. During that span, they’ve used three first-round picks on offensive players, with one of them being Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The trend of the Packers selecting defensive players continued in Dane Brugler’s first mock draft of the 2023 cycle. The NFL Draft analyst for The Athletic had the Packers selecting Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the eighth overall pick in the upcoming draft.

From Brugler:

An offensive lineman is possible here — Peter Skoronski playing for the Packers just like his Super Bowl-winning grandfather, Bob Skoronski, would be an awesome story. But no one should be surprised to see another defender, specifically along the line, where Tyree Wilson can be a versatile weapon.

Reaction

Wilson passes the eye test with his long arms and size (6-6, 270 pounds). With his size, length and quickness, Wilson consistently gets to the quarterback for the Red Raiders. The Texas Tech prospect is able to convert speed to power and threatens offensive tackles off the edge with his length and quickness. He has the long strides to quickly win the corner and close on the quarterback.

Over the past two seasons, Wilson has recorded 14 sacks and accounted for 84 pressures (PFF). It’s worth noting that Wilson missed the final two games of the 2022 regular season with a foot injury.

Wilson isn’t just a pass-rush specialist. With his length and power, he sets the edge and creates havoc in the backfield against the run. In his final 23 games, Wilson recorded 27.5 tackles for loss.

Wilson is currently the 13th-ranked player on my big board. After just getting gashed by the Philadelphia Eagles, it makes a lot of sense to add a player like Wilson that could come in from day one and get after the quarterback, while helping shore up Green Bay’s run defense.

Next Five Picks

The next five players that were selected after the Packers in Brugler’s mock draft were Christian Gonzalez (CB, Oregon), Peter Skoronski (OL, Northwestern), Quentin Johnston (WR, TCU), Kelee Ringo (CB, Georgia), and Joey Porter Jr (CB, Penn State).

The Packers haven’t drafted an offensive lineman in the first round since 2011. They haven’t drafted a wide receiver in the first round since 2002.

Last season they drafted an off-the-ball linebacker in the first round for the first time since 2006. Do they break another streak in the 2023 NFL Draft?

If the Packers were going to take an offensive tackle this early in the first round, it would likely be Paris Johnson Jr. The offensive tackle out of Ohio State went No. 7 to the Arizona Cardinals. It’s possible they take Skoronski and plug him in at right tackle or right guard. The Northwestern offensive tackle has been one of the best offensive linemen in college football this season.

Johnston has all the tools to tempt Brian Gutekunst to take a wide receiver and end the 21-year drought. With his size (6-4, 215 pounds) and speed (4.4), the TCU wide receiver would form a dynamic duo at wide receiver with Christian Watson.

With Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas all on the roster, it’s hard to imagine the Packers spending a first-round pick on a cornerback.

However, the secondary was supposed to be a strength of the team and it’s been one of the most disappointing position groups on the roster.

A team can never have enough talented cornerbacks and Gonzalez checks all the boxes. The Oregon cornerback has an exciting blend of size (6-2) and quickness. Gonzalez would be a pick that Green Bay fans would be upset with on draft day, but once they saw him locking up wide receivers they’d quickly go out and buy his jersey.

Verdict

The Packers are sitting at 4-8 and the roster could look dramatically different when they start the 2023 season. They are in a position where they just need to add talent to the roster, regardless of the position (minus quarterback and running back).

Since Rashan Gary went down with a torn ACL, Green Bay’s pass rush has been nonexistent. They need to add another edge rusher this offseason to team with Gary, Smith, and Kingsley Enagbare. Wilson checks all the boxes and plays a premium position.

Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Tech Red Raiders: Stream, injury report, broadcast info

Trying to figure out where to find the game on Saturday? Here’s how to watch, stream or listen to Oklahoma at Texas Tech. From @john9williams

Oklahoma (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) will face Texas Tech (6-5, 4-4) on Saturday night in Lubbock, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Heading into last weekend, both the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Tech were still in search of the win to get them to bowl eligibility. For both teams, it’s been a roller coaster of a season with their first-year head coaches, though Oklahoma’s struggles have been more the surprise.

Joey McGuire has Texas Tech bowl eligible for the second-straight season. It’s the first time since 2012-2013 that the Red Raiders have gone to a bowl game in back-to-back seasons.

The big storyline facing the Red Raiders is the loss of Tyree Wilson for the season. Their star edge rusher was in the midst of a fantastic year with 61 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Texas Tech’s defense has had some issues in 2022, losing their best player creates a hole along the defensive front, particularly in the pass rush.

The Sooners are dealing with their own injury issues, as Andrew Raym will miss the remainder of the year after having surgery. Robert Congel has filled in admirably in his absence, but the interior offensive line will be something to watch.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022
  • Time: 6:30 p.m. CT
  • TV Channel: FS1
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)
  • Listen: Streaming on the Varsity App

Trio of Big 12 talent projected in round 1 of latest NFL mock draft

Six Big 12 players projected in the latest mock draft.

On this Saturday during the bye week for the Texas Longhorns, we are checking in on NFL draft projections. More importantly, where is current running back Bijan Robinson projected to land?

The Longhorns haven’t had a first-round selection since Malcom Brown was selected No. 32 overall by the New England Patriots. Since that time Connor Williams (No. 50 overall) and Sam Cosmi (No. 51 overall) are the highest-picked Texas Longhorns since that time.

Bijan Robinson gives the team an opportunity to dip back into the first round for the first time in seven years.

Longhorns Wire breaks down each of the six Big 12 players to land in the latest NFL mock from Draft Wire.

Vikings get rising edge rusher in way too early mock

The edge from West Texas could be heading to the Vikings come April

The Minnesota Vikings are 3-1 and in a position to make a run at a Super Bowl.

Unlike in previous years, the Vikings are winning games that they shouldn’t. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has this team playing with confidence right now and they are finding ways to bring home the victory.

The draft is still months away and is an afterthought at this point, but it is still important to continue to look at the upcoming class and get a sense for what is going on.

The latest mock draft comes to us from PFF’s Mike Renner. Four quarterbacks and four wide receivers went in the first round. The Vikings didn’t go in either direction instead taking rising edge rusher Tyree Wilson from Texas Tech.

Here is what Renner had to say about Wilson.

“The Vikings add another long edge rusher to the fold to keep the heat on opposing quarterbacks. Wilson is a freakishly long 6-foot-6, 275-pound edge rusher who is only scratching the surface of what he can do on the field. He’s notched 27 pressures already through five games this season as he continues to climb up draft boards.”

The Vikings could definitely use an edge rusher to develop and the futures of both Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith are both up in the air.

Best player the Oklahoma Sooners will face each week during the 2022 season

Who are the best players the Oklahoma Sooners will face each week during the 2022 season?

Looking at ESPN’s matchup predictor for the 2022 season, the Oklahoma Sooners are the projected favorite in all but one game; the Red River Showdown. Though there’s been a lot of turnover in Norman, the talent level is still quite high. That doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges, like week three on the road in Lincoln, or the Red River Showdown, but the Sooners will once again be one of the teams in contention for the Big 12 title.

Along the road to return to Arlington for the Big 12 championship game, the Sooners will have to contend with some talented individuals in the conference. Most teams won’t have the depth of talent that the Sooners have, but they have talented individuals that can make life difficult Oklahoma each week.

With the season opener against the UTEP Miners 30 days away, let’s take a look at the best player the Sooners will face each week during the 2022 college football season.
